My last hot spring, number 28, Summer Lake Hot Springs. All the pools are man made and the water is sourced from a mineral spring nearby. There were multiple pools with varying temps, and one giant cement pool inside this old barn. Lots of people around, and there’s kind of a commune/hippie vibe going on but I dug it & met some nice people. My 20th hot spring was a winner. Hill Top Hot Spring (or Pulky’s Pool) sits atop a small rise beside an especially active thermal area. There is an adjustable hot/cold valve on the pipe bringing in the water, so you can adjust the temp to your personal liking, which was nice. This pool is pretty popular, and there were a few people around during my first soak, but I returned at sunrise and got a lot of time to myself. 17th hot spring was Crab Cooker at Mammoth Lakes. This one was a no-go, with the water feeling like it was about 130° at least. I couldn’t even hold my hand in it for more than a few seconds. 18th hot spring was The Rock Tub, also in the Mammoth Lakes area. This little man-made tub has 100° thermal water piped into it, and it was just large enough for about 6 people. 19th hot spring was another bust. Shepherd hot spring is a man-made pool with thermal water piped in, but the temperature can get really uncomfortable if the water is left running. When I got here it was about 125°, a little too much for me at the moment. Would have been a beautiful soak with the Eastern Sierras as a backdrop. My 25th hot spring was the excellent Trego Hot Springs on the edge of the Black Rock Playa. Hot spring water bubbles up through fine mud at the bottom of a Y-shaped pond. I kept moving around and finding hot pockets in the mud, sometimes digging down far enough to scald myself. This spring is truly in the middle of nowhere, with only a railroad track hinting at any kind of human activity in the area.
