Abandoned Colosseum Gold Mine, Clark County, NV. Abandoned in 1992, this is one example of the many pit lakes left over from mining operations in Nevada. These pits end up siphoning fresh water and rendering it useless due to toxic acids and minerals from the mines. One estimate is that pit lakes siphon off three times the amount of water the state of Nevada is allowed to take from the Colorado River every year. That’s a huge amount of wasted water in a desert state. Down at the edge of what should be an oasis, it’s eerily silent. The animals know to stay away from here.

KC Panel 1, Clark County, NV. Easily the largest panel I’ve seen in the state of Nevada, this one spans about 80’ long and 6’ high. The amount of glyphs contained here are staggering, and it’s impossible to capture the scale in a single photo. This area has been home to the Archaic, Ancestral Puebloan, and Paiute people, just to name a few, and it really shows in the variety of these petroglyphs. GB Petroglyphs 2, Clark County, NV. This is a weird one. I also think there’s a chance this has been altered from its original design based on repatination. It’s just so bright for something that was carved thousands of years ago. Also notice the technique is more scratched than pecked, not a common method out here.
