Do you love a character with a good redemption arc? Or a corruption arc? Or even just seeing the kind of storylines that emerge from a character who was formerly aligned with an enemy side decide to join a different one?
Then welcome to...
The Turncoat Tournament!
This is a tournament for characters who have changed sides at some point in the story. It can be from good to bad, bad to good, or from one morally ambiguous side to a different morally ambiguous side, as long as the change in allegiance is still clear. Characters can change sides multiple times, and ultimately end up returning to their original side, and still qualify for the tournament!
Due to the subject of the tournament itself being inherently spoiler-y, I will by default not be tagging posts with spoiler warnings. However, below I do have a list of all the pieces of media that have characters in the tournament; if you see something on this list that you do want spoiler tagged, please let me know, and I’ll start tagging it with spoiler warnings!

Annon-Guy: Alternate Costumes
In terms of Alternate Costumes in Fighting Games, what's your personal opinion on them? Does it depend on a number of factors where you prefer the default appearance, the alternate costume or both?
For example, in most Capcom Games, Chun-Li fro, Street Fighter generally has her classic outfit (except in SF6 where it's the alternate) with her getting her Alpha Outfit as an alternate.
Even in BlazBlue, Noel has both her New and NOL outfits available, plus in Guilty Gear 2 Overture, Sol has his EX Sol Costume which gives him his Classic Look. Not to mention Johnny's extra beard "accessory" in StrIVe...
Granted, there are costumes which are meant to be fanservice like. Like in SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy, EVERY fighter (except Skullomania and Thief Arthur due to Guest Character Status) has three costumes to equip. Barring Shermie, Terry, Jeane, Miss X(?) and Skullomania, they start off in a goofy/fanservice outfit with a second fanservice outfit as an unlockable. Their third unlockable outfit is their original outfit from the main KOF Games, which is the only time they're not embarrassed (including Mai, who's default is fanservice 😂).
This is a very huge topic, to be honest... and really it can become anything in terms of potential development ideas that have either existed or have yet to exist.
But, to keep things simple, I'll just say that my absolute favorite approach is the way games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising do it:
By giving each character "bits and pieces" of various outfits and weapons to mix and match and customize their appearance, players are able to put their own color and spin on their favorite characters and "make it personalized".
Soul Calibur and Tekken are probably the most famous for it because of their 3D DLC packages, and even Dead or Alive as a series is pretty infamous for it as well.
But games like Mortal Kombat 11, MK1, and even Melty Blood and Under Night In-Birth are doing it now!
Even Street Fighter is taking the World Tour approach and letting players create their ultimate character.
It was long ago, but Guilty Gear Isuka utilized Robo-Ky Factory, a means of letting players create their own ultimate creation for the game.
Guilty Gear Strive, while it currently does the bare minimum, is necessarily NOT going to take a more "dandy" option at some point. We can only wait and see how they approach this part of the game's development, but the more people ASK for it, the more they'll STRIVE towards such a goal!

Preliminary Round: Fate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artoria is already included in the bracket due to having a lot more submissions than any of these three
Propaganda below cut
Mordred
Clarent blood arthur; Son' of King Arthur I say son in quotes because her relastionship with gender weird and convoluted
Mysterious Heroine X
She weilds secret calibur, She wants to kill sabers the most she is the ultimate anti Saber weapon that and her class is assassin but she does use a sword
Miyamoto Musashi
Alternate universe genderbent Miyamoto Musashi, contender for the greatest swordswoman. She wields two swords, in case if youre still doubtful and her swordsmanship is that of "Zero" which contrasts Kijirou's "Infinity". Way later goes beyond Zero itself and achieves True Emptiness; Bi. Very bi, hence why she uses multiple swords. In a single sitting she managed to eat 634 bowls of udon. Caused the problem in one event because she ate food from a Holy Grail. Dork. A very cool and strong dork. Miss you, girl.

Homosexuals (and co.) I need your help
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm looking for YouTubers that specialize in fighting video game videos. I'm mostly interested in Tekken, DOA, SoulCalibur and SF. Some Virtua Fighter and MK wouldn't hurt, but anything else other than these six franchises I don't care about.
I know about Maximilian, obviously and I LOVE Core-A Gaming but I'd like to broaden my horizons. Any suggestions?

Tumblr media
Now that it is truly over, can the next game top it?
Tumblr media
Short answer: no. There is absolutely no way this title can be beaten. You got every single character that was ever playable in Smash Brothers, four different Square Enix Characters, two characters from a rival video game console, and a character owned by Disney. To successfully add all this to the game is a Herculean Feat and I doubt can be done ever again unless they have a contract with them saying they can use them for the next game (which I doubt). So in the distant future where the Switch is replaced with Nintendo’s next big console, what’s to come for Smash?
Tumblr media
I’ve seen people suggest a reboot. I don’t think that’ll work since doing so would possibly drastically change the game in ways that loses either the competitive or casual scene. Change the mechanics too much and you’ll make it harder to get into. Change the game too much and the competition scene will be gone. How about a Remake?
Tumblr media
As much as people want a remake of Melee, I doubt its going to be the Melee those people want. One of the big techniques from the game is wave dashing, a glitch that the competitive scene loves to use. Nintendo has continually removed the chance of getting that back. A Melee Remake would remove that and also rebalance the cast to possibly be similar to Ultimate. And if they weren’t satisfied with that, I doubt they’ll like it.
Tumblr media
As for me, I think the closest Nintendo can do to get close to Ultimate’s hype is to be a crossover game. Instead of numerous companies as guest stars, you have one company providing half the roster. For specifics I’ll leave to you but which companies would do the job? Capcom off the bat but I think people expect them to be more Marvel Baby than Smash. So my two suggestions...
Tumblr media
First being Namco X Nintendo. Namco has a large library of characters as well. And they’ve been helping Nintendo make Smash since 4. Tekken, Pacman, Tales, Soul Calibur, Dark Souls, Namco has a lot of franchises that they can pull from to fill a roster. But I think there’s one other company that will bring in more hype than Namco...
Tumblr media
If there’s one company known for being a Rival to Nintendo, that’s Sega. The Console Wars were a big thing in the 90s and while Nintendo won overall, Sega has shown to be good sports by having games be exclusive on Nintendo and even having the Mario Universe be part of an Olympic Event. Heck, even just focusing on the Mario/Sonic cast would be exciting for Nintendo and Sega fans. But that’s my thought and I’m pretty sure we won’t find out until the next Console Lifecycle.

expanded feelings
SSS+++
- dragonic knight is just the best. literally unfuckable you cannot fuck dragonic knight
S
- espada is a suit that didn’t land for me at first but really grew on me! the colour balance and the cape do a lot of work on their own and work extremely well with Kento’s elegant swordplay style and lightning theme. Just super good super sexy
- brave dragon is a main rider base form design of course it’s fantastic, of course it’s a winner. just absolutely crazy and wild from a glance with bold colours, fascinating unique aspects such as the eyes and an extremely distinctive look you couldn’t mistake for anything else. just really good
- dragon alangina is the most based thing to ever happen in saber and uses the rider system to its advantage to create something that truly symbolises the characters and combines their best aspects
- calibur is a dark knight and a twisted counterpart to the main rider with a sick sword and an even sicker visor. again of COURSE it’s a winner it’s so sexy to look at
- saikou sword lol
A
- saikou For Real This Time is beautiful in X-Swordsman. once again a super distinctive design that takes a comic book aesthetic and makes it work so well and is tied into a fantastic little story arc for the guy
- tategami lion is another one of those suits that just grew on me. it really breaks out of the base aesthetic of both the series in general and Blades itself which is reflective of what it represents for Rintarou’s character, and then the cloak and the ice visor and the overwhelming white is so so nice
- jaou dragon, again it had to grow on me, but man this suit is INTIMIDATING! in theory it’s a little bland but in actual practise this is a real bastard of a suit with so much presence
- buster is Solid he sells the dad bod rider aesthetic and has this feeling of an experienced veteran there to help the new guys. Super tough and super large he’s just wonderful
- sabela has design elements that are a bit weird but otherwise is beautiful to look at with some great colours and a lovely bug theming
- dragon arthur is mostly just brave dragon so of course it’s good, and then dragon hedgehog peter is exactly the kind of craziness that i like from these designs
- xross saber is really good! it’s the base form bathed in the stars and the night sky and y’know what that works. that works pretty well i can’t blame it
B+
- was primitive dragon’s being a berserker form a bit pointless and a bit prerequisite? sure. but it was really good, wasn’t it?? it’s hard to deny the aesthetic it nailed and how that worked with the fighting style. this is a feral little guy for sure
- saber ghost is fun and cute and that’s all i want from a ttfc special form
- jin amazons
- are solomon and storious kitbashes? yes. do they look good? also yes! far from the best designs and having few to no unique parts mean they’re not as characterful as they should be but ultimately they’re intimidating looking villains and they chose some good parts to repaint for the role
- emotional dragon is slightly clusterfucky but it still works out; the multiple capes and the way it’s basically Super Brave Dragon is really neat
- xross saber’s other two forms are a bit clustery but still fine. just not as good as base xross
- saber tv-kun is alright
B-
- durandal is a pretty solid form aside from the helmet but doesn’t stand out very well. he’s imposing and gets a lot of points for looking tough with his trident but that’s about it
- blades daisenki is basically base/wonder blades but improved in every way... but again that is about it? a little bland aside from the cannons. lion chest is a lot more slick thankfully
- i get why people like slash but eh. after the initial surprise it ended up sinking to the background for me? a bit like the character
- blades in general has a lot of issues with his design, mostly the lion head being too awkward. daisenki shows how to get it right with the streamlining but having it just sitting there straight ahead in base is really weird and it’s not a stunning design. blades specter makes it a bit messier and fantastic lion has some fun wings but otherwise is even messier still
- kenzan is sorta bland? it’s fine whatever but i dunno just pretty boring
C
- elemental dragon is just. agh. not the worst thing ever but it’s not nice to look at either i just can’t like this
- the wonder combos aren’t great but golden alangina might be the worst for how bad the different golds and yellows clash and it really doesn’t help that this is his final form alongside xross and tategami. just pretty bad
D
- crimson dragon is better than golden alangina but i hate this bitch for all the screentime he got

Annon-Guy: Capcom - I can understand why you don't like Street Fighter, but what about Darkstalkers, Strider and the Capcom Vs. Series?
I’ll leave reading this to be “optional” (since I still personally don’t like talking about it, TLDR: GG4L).
In times past those did interest me, including X-Men Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, even Street Fighter Alpha 3 and SFIII Third Strike.  Though I couldn’t find myself playing the older games as much.
I also held interest in Warzard (Red Earth) and Cyberbots as well... SFEX3 (Arika later turned this in to Fighting EX Layer) was also interesting to me to a degree.
Even CVS2 had its own uniqueness... but most of what I found interesting lay more on the SNK side of things than anything done by Capcom.
I am also a *huge* fan of Strider, Moon Diver, and lots of other things by Motomiya Kikaku to this very day.
I think.... it was some time after Darkstalkers 3 (the PSX version, in fact the only version of that game I ever enjoyed) that Capcom basically cut off it’s own creative limbs (fired key production staff), that things went sour for them, but also for myself.
There was a small window of time when I enjoyed Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, but it was very brief... and not really something I could attach myself to for an extended period for various reasons (the FGC “scene” being part of those reasons).
It just felt like I was surrounded by a lot of immature players at the time, and I couldn’t motivate myself to enjoy the same content they did.
And while I’ve had “similar” experiences even within the BB and GG communities (toxic animosity, etc), the key difference was what I experienced on the “development side” of those games... the passion being exuded by the likes of Mori and Ishiwatari and the creativity from their teams, along with the humor, kept me coming back for more.
Capcom felt like a dry barren field, than anything especially colorful, at least around the time of SFIV onwards.
A lot of time has passed since then, I suppose.... and it would be hypocritical of me to sit in judgement for all their hard work at fixing what mistakes they’ve made.... but.... I still think Darkstalkers was one of the games they could’ve done something with in a big way if they so much as tried.
Right now, Guilty Gear Strive and Samurai Shodown feel like my only real solace in fighting games (well, Soul Calibur and Granblue Fantasy Versus as well perhaps).... but it takes a long time for such scars to heal.
Please be understanding, based on what I’ve gone through.
I am getting on in years, so fighting games are not as big a priority as they once were when I was younger... so I have to pick and choose which games bring the most joy in my life very carefully these days.
And right now, I will choose Guilty Gear, every time.

By this point, making another character wish list or prediction for the remaining Smash Bros. DLC is probably a fool's errand. The name of the game for Masahiro Sakurai and his development team has been to subvert expectations every single time.
So, I’m just going to make an (incomplete) list of the characters that I think would be neat to see playable in Ultimate and leave it at that. As usual, I won’t be mad if most of these characters don’t appear in the roster, but I will definitely be elated if any of them happen.
By this point, the only rules I’m using for the sake of keeping it in the realm of plausibility (and the only ones that seem to remain ironclad) are: a) No Assist Trophies, b) The character must originate from a videogame, c) The character must have appeared on a game for a Nintendo console in some fashion.
I tried to limit it to a character per franchise, but admittedly I cheated a few times. So pardon me if you see some “blatant favoritism” in the list.
Without further ado and in franchise alphabetical order:
Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney)
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assasin’s Creed)
The Howard Twins (Astral Chain)
