In an island where every folk and fauna is made of peaches, Momotaro stands as the only human boy!

A long time ago, a tiny swaddled boy drifted in a raft through the waters, miraculously avoiding any dangerous obstacles that could have swiped him or swept him away as if a guardian angel was his sail. When his raft beached safely on the Great Peach Island, the peachy people considered his safety a miracle and in turn began to raise him as their own. He grew alongside the crowd, building his own confidence and strength as he got older, playing happily amongst his companions and forming his own peachy posse— a little group of fruit-bodied animals he’d met along his endeavors which he named Wan-Wan, Uki-Uki, and Piyo-Piyo! But it seems like life in this land— despite it being a part of the Tail’s End Islands— has been mostly easygoing, but the human boy’s got one new extremity from life here. A large peach pit that just… appeared on his stomach one day, apparently! It doesn’t hurt him. But if anything, it is a weak point. He doesn’t seem to know how it came to be, nor does he question it so much. He’s… not supposed to question it.

As a way to fit closer to the inhabitants, he might wear a crafted garb of his own to make him appear more like an actual peach. The clothes were made by the people, and there are certain times where it’s expected he wears them. As for why? Who knows! It’s certainly not to conceal his humanity from the Onis up on the higher mountainside! …Oh.

Well, he’s not afraid of the Onis like the rest of his people are. If anything, he could take one on lickety-split. For a boy of his stature, he’s got some move and impressive capabilities to keep up with them and overpower them with his pals, and with his trusty katanas to slice and deter away any wrongdoers! Those blades are his pride and joy! Nothing stands against him when he’s armed— they all fall down! He’d do anything to protect those babies… even if it meant leaving the island he was informed he should never vacate off of under any circumstances.

Dianella sandwicensis, known as Uki in native Hawaiian, is monocot member of the Asphodelaceae family which includes some well-known succulent genera such as Haworthia and Aloe. The actinomorphic flowers with anatomy in triplicate causes it to readily resemble flowers of the true lilies, leading to a common name of flax lilies for Dianella plants in general. The species is endemic to Hawaii and has a natural range spanning many of the islands where it can grow in many of their environments, whether dry or wet, or low to high altitude. It can flower at any time of year and produces vividly colored purple-blue fruit which were prized for incorporation into seed lei and used for dye. The leaves were further used, being braided into cord or used to thatch houses. In the modern day the plant is still used as a source of natural dye and for ornamental planting. Thanks to the Lyon Arboretum for making this plant available to me for my assignment for Hana Hou!

OOPS I HAVENT POSTED IN A HOT MINUTE. Anyways here are some more characters planned for Blind Man’s Bluff~

The Boy of Great Peach Island, Momotaro and his trusty peachy pals, Wan-Wan, Uki-Uki and Piyo-Piyo!

And the two step sisters of Atalanta; Avalon and Aeden… there might be a little more than meets the eye… or one… or three…?

Momotaro is obviously based on the story of Momotaro, the boy born from a peach and had a dog, monkey, and pheasant companion! Here, he might be willing to help The Stringmates out on getting their quest over with! If they don’t try any shenanigans, that is. No promises.

As for Avalon and Aeden, there’s a bit more. They follow the rule of 3’s. Unlike Adder (what I call Atalanta for short), they’re actually pure red apples as opposed to Adder being a golden apple. They’re also based on the story “Little One Eye, Little Two Eyes, Little Three Eyes” where One Eye and Three Eyes tease Two Eyes for only having two eyes, strangely enough…! Likewise, Avalon has an eye missing, probably from combat, Atalanta has both her eyes, and the only logical way I could give Aeden “three eyes” is by giving her a monocle, haha.

They’re also just based on the “evil stepsisters” trope in fairytales. Except when it comes to them versus Atalanta, you might find it’s… quite the opposite, actually. To an extent, at least.

Name: Ukiki

Debut: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

It is time for monkey business! Have you had your state-recommended dose of monkey business for the day? If you haven’t, don’t fret, because today’s post is about Ukiki!

We’re doing another anonymous request today, and I’d like to thank you all again for sending them, because they really have gotten me motivated to write about things I otherwise wouldn’t! There are still some requests I’ve yet to get to, but sit tight cause I promise I’ll deliver someday! I just gotta be in the right headspace!

Anyway, Ukiki! I don’t need to tell you this is a monkey, because oh, it is such a monkey! It’s a very particular kind of Generic Cartoon Monkey, a little brown creature with big ears and a long curly tail, like you see pop up here and there. Whether they’re rolling in balls or hanging out in a clock, this is the world’s most  beloved image of a little primate! They don’t seem to be any particular kind of monkey, rather taking common monkey traits from all sorts of species, I guess!

We first meet these little scamps in Yoshi’s Island, and true to the Cheek of a Monkey, they are some of the trickier enemies in the game, as in they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves! Some of them will just run and jump around, others will climb vines, some will even drop bombs and Needlenoses, as you can see in the art at the top! The Player’s Guide named these variants Short Fuses and Seedy Sallies respectively, and I don’t think they really needed unique names but I respect it! Quite a few of them are totally harmless, so they might not even be enemies: just rascals! Weird Mario rascals!

Oh, and they’re called Grinders in this game. Why? I have no idea! What do monkeys have to do with grinding? Do they grind their teeth? Do they love to frequent gay dating apps? What does it mean! 

In Tetris Attack, they are a team with Poochy, and wow, what a wonderful team this is! Unfortunately they have been brainwashed by Kamek and Bowser, which is just kind of funny to me! Bowser sure has his priorities straight by choosing to brainwash an immortal dog and also a random monkey who happened to be alongside it. Ukikis aren’t even normally allied to Yoshi! Is this one Yoshi’s friend, or is it just a neutral entity, as most monkeys are? 

And then, bizarrely, they next appeared in... Super Mario 64! How funny is that? A Yoshi series original enemy, making its way to the big M (Mario series)! Although they look a little bit different here, with a smaller mouth and a rounder head... since this is such a generic monkey design, one has to wonder if they were even meant to be the same enemy... But hey, why not right? It’s more fun this way!

This is the first time they’re called Ukikis... or Ukkikis, as I guess they spell it in this game! And yeah, I prefer this name: “uki”, “ki ki”, or even “uki ki” are the Japanese sounds for a monkey, a bit like how they’d say “ook ook” or “oo oo” around here! It might even be the sound for a cool, special type of sunglasses monkey that makes you hit an offbeat! 

Oh, and in this game it tries to steal your hat. So rude! Mario needs that! It’s his life energy! 

In the next few years, Ukiki receives the same fate of most B-list Mario enemies during the Gamecube years: being kept singlehandedly on life-support by half a dozen Mario Party games! This is a funny artwork of Peach and her new child that she gave birth to! Welcome to the world, little monkey!

No, I’m only kidding! This is from a minigame Chimp Chase, where you need to reunite baby Ukikis with their parents of the same colour! Wait, there are different coloured Ukikis? And the adult ones are huge! Does this mean every Ukiki we’ve met so far is a juvenile, and the average Ukiki grows to an enormous size? Probably not, because this is a random minigame from Mario Party 5! 

There are also golden Ukikis who you can hand over to any adult, and I just like the implication of that. They don’t care if it’s their child or not- they’re rich!

Speaking of funny Ukiki artwork, I really like this one, from Mario Party 6′s Snow Brawl! It is so dramatic! Mario throwing a snowball with such force and rage, the Ukiki covered in snow cowering behind him... this one picture represents the horrors of war better than any war movie I’ve ever seen!

In Mario Party Advance, we meet a certain young tomboyish Ukiki named Akiki- and you know she’s a tomboy, because she’s a Womoid who doesn’t even wear a bow! So scandalous! Unfortunately, her uncle Ukiki has left her a note saying he’s being kidnapped, with the only clue being a message that reads “bIg teAM cAT THElf bLAKE.” And she needs YOUR help to find him!

Can YOU figure out where Ukiki is?

That’s right, the capital letters spell out “I AM AT THE LAKE”, and lo, he is at the lake! He actually wasn’t kidnapped at all, and was just playing a prank on his niece. But that’s... a really unfunny prank! There isn’t any joke here at all! A hoax like this can be a serious crime in some places, you know! That’s very irresponsible!

...But I guess monkeys are above the law.

Now you may have noticed that these past few appearances are all based on their look in Super Mario 64... but that would soon change!

It is of course, the second coming of Mario enemy redesigns, Super Mario 64 DS! This game redesigned Ukiki, or I guess re-redesigned them to look like the original art for Yoshi’s Island, with a big old mouth! Which look is your favorite? I think the N64 Ukiki has its own charm as a cute little monkey, but the newer (older?) one is more unique and definitely fits better as a Mario character, I think! 

Hey wait, Mario Party Advance came out after 64 DS? That doesn’t seem right! I guess the two eras of Ukikis aren’t totally clear-cut, after all!

The rest of our Ukiki appearances aren’t really that interesting, since they’re mostly just the modern Yoshi games, and I don’t feel like talking about those! It’d be boring! Instead, I have a funny little Ukiki in a sailor hat for you.

DESIGN NOTES

She has a new name following the drop of a Japanese surname due to her origins.

Her hair is now styled into Qilliqti.

She now has a white streak in her hair from her first encounter against Nightmare due to the fact she has faced down death.

She has cultural tattoos I kept finding while looking at references of Inuit women. The lines upon her forehead symbolize her parents who have now passed away, and the lines on her chin represent her current family which includes her sister, brother, and son. They also symbolize she has entered womanhood.

She has a more distinct body shape now since she has always been plus sized. She is supposed to be bigger but I did my best.

Her axe is strapped on her back, and she still has her helmet it is just not featured.

POLARMARE ORIGINS

In the United States, those with particularly strong quirks get strong armed into becoming heroes. When the government got wind of the three siblings in a remote Alaskan village with quirks centered around vulnerability, they ushered the siblings into a hero program.

Nukilik and her sister, Uki Caulderfield (Iron Huntress: Trapmaster), were on board with the program as they were soon charmed by the fieldwork. Their brother, Amaqjuaq Caulderfield, continued to have reservations about the gig.

Eventually it culminated into their assigned management team insisting they change themselves to become more 'marketable'. This included changing their names and appearance to appear more 'civilized'.

Amaqjuaq had a mental break under all of the pressure and stress, which caused him to leave in the middle of the night and become the villain Sisuuk (Avalanche). Nukilik and Uki headed out on their first mission to subdue their brother with the order to kill on sight. The two ignored the government and instead faked his death so he could receive mental treatment at a hospital.

The two sisters left the government behind afterwards much to ire of the government who plotted the sisters downfall.

Unfortunately, the sisters had other plans. Uki left for a job opportunity in Japan which made her the Hero Commission's jurisdiction but she was also technically a US citizen which left the two hero commissions in a political slump.

Nukilik went to study under Polarfrost (@insomniac-jay) before she graduated as a pro hero.

She went to sign on with an agency only to sue them for intentional endangerment due to the fact the hero costume they gave her had more emphasis on sex appeal then practicality. She lost the lawsuit but gained attention from the international hero agency E.C.H.O..

She left to their headquarters on a private island where she was placed under the apprenticeship of Polar Hero: Captain Maritime where she headed out to Antarctica. On a mission, she encountered Nightmare who trapped her into a mental simulation as her life force was slowly being drained. She managed to escape and Nightmare escaped but Captain Maritime died.

Afterwards she was called back to the agency where she became Winter Warrior: Polarmare, and since her mentor could not give her a gift as per tradition of E.C.H.O., she was gifted his snow mobile that could turn into a motorbike or ski jet.

Polarmare was then placed in charge of tracking down Nightmare and putting her away for good. She continued to hunt for Polarmare which lead her to many places including Egypt, France, Canada, Japan, and South Korea where she manged to take down Nightmare for good. After she signed off on her imprisonment, Polarmare went back to the USA.

She checked on her brother, who had been doing a lot better since and was slowly putting his life together, and met Queen X. The two became fast friends, and Queen X still speaks fondly of Polarmare. Polarmare was soon called away to track down a vigilante in Russia, and she was off once again.

In Russia, Polarmare met Swamp Fox the vigilante she was tasked to capture but instead let him go and even joined in his escapades. The two became friends, and Polarmare managed to set him up on a date with the Frost Huntress one of the top Russian Heroines.

While in Russia, Polarmare met a young orphan by the name of Seko with a lightning base quirk. She took him to her apartment where she gave him a warm meal and a bath, but he refused to leave her and started to camp in her apartment by hiding in wires and the walls. Polarmare eventually adopted him, and on his sixth birthday she was sent to Japan to become the business and management teacher at UA High School.

OTHER NOTES

She has a degree in education, a degree in business, and a degree in law.

She forges her own weapons, and likes to make little metal wire statues in her free time.
