At their peak, there were more British Restaurants across the UK than there are branches of McDonald’s or Wetherspoons today. Now a new report is calling for the return of a “national restaurant service” in some form, as a way to tackle contemporary issues such as health inequality, food insecurity and even climate change in the UK. A forthcoming report entitled Public diners: the idea whose time has come, by food policy NGO Nourish Scotland, marks the beginning of a campaign to introduce restaurants as a new piece of national infrastructure, a call backed by politicians and experts. A public diner, according to the report, is a state-subsidised eatery serving quality and ethically produced food at affordable prices. Crucially, says Nourish Scotland, they are neither charity nor a treat, but rather everyday eating places for entire communities to access.

I’m downloading shapefiles (basically geographic files, in this case the polygons of every country) for a mapping project I’m doing and while most countries have an ISO code column in their file (which is a 2 letter abbreviation of their country name), Canada, the UK, and the US do not. The US doesn’t even have a country column, it just listed the states. Now these are official shapefiles made by the vendor of the software I’m using (Esri, which is one of if not the dominant global distributor of mapping software) and are treated as the authoritative copies. Like if you wanted to download the outline of the US and all its states you would download Esri’s copy of it. And the reason I noticed this discrepancy is because I’m trying to combine individual country files to a global world file and I first had to edit the US & UK & Canada shapefiles and manually add in their ISO codes so they would join the world file properly. Notably countries like Argentina already have country & ISO code embedded in its shapefile.
And what I’m taking away from this is that there is an epistemic assumption happening where western countries can stand alone - they do not need to be combined or compared with other countries, they are complete units that constitute their own global file. Their data lack an “international character,” they are not set up for comparison or combination with other country data. The assumption being made by excluding these (extraordinarily trivial and easy to include) datapoints is that the only reason you would be downloading shapefiles for the US or Canada is to study these countries in isolation, while countries in the Global South are structured to accommodate the act of comparison

 The business of platforming casual and warrantless police requests 
Surveillance doorbell maker Amazon Ring on Wednesday announced it is discontinuing an option that allowed law enforcement agencies to request video footage without a warrant.
The internet-connected security vendor is sunsetting the Request for Assistance (RFA) tool – a feature of its Neighbors app that enables authorities to ask Ring customers for their video recordings.And now no more, at least in the US where the Neighbors app operates.
"Public safety agencies like fire and police departments can still use the Neighbors app to share helpful safety tips, updates, and community events," the vendor explained. "They will no longer be able to use the RFA tool to request and receive video in the app."
After its acquisition of Ring in 2018, Amazon began partnering with local law enforcement to provide users of its Neighbors app with real-time crime and safety information – including video from customers' cameras.
"Over the past few years we have learned that, when neighbors, the Ring team and law enforcement all work together, we can create safer communities," declared Jamie Siminoff, chief inventor and founder of Ring, at the time. "Neighbors is meant to facilitate real-time communication between these groups, while maintaining neighbor privacy first and foremost."
In 2021, an Oxford County Court judge in the UK found otherwise – that Ring did not maintain neighbor privacy. Judge Melissa Clarke ruled that an Amazon Ring doorbell violated the UK's 2018 Data Protection Act by capturing audio beyond the range of its video capability. But in general, Ring is lawful in the UK and residents simply have to abide by the Information Commissioner's Office guidelines for CCTV camera placement.
In the US, where there's no federal privacy law and only a fig leaf of narrowly focused privacy regulations, Ring doorbells remain commonplace and haven't so far presented much legal risk. While some scholars argue that Ring violates US privacy rights, Congress has yet to address the core issues – that privately captured surveillance isn't subject to the same limitations as surveillance conducted by authorities, and people may not have the privacy they expect amid ubiquitous video cameras....

Healthline often shows up as the first result when you Google health information, including depression and other mental health concerns, cancer, addiction, etc. You can’t access this website’s information without allowing tracking. This data - including the health information I look up and which websites I visit before and after, as well as which devices belong to the same household - is extremely sensitive and should not be passed on to a whole range of ‘vendors’, including Amazon, Yahoo, Blockthrough, Liveramp, etc.
I only get to see this text because I’m in the EU/UK area. Elsewhere, my compliance with tracking is assumed. Thanks to the GDPR, I can at least view a list of the purposes of tracking and the vendors that want that info. For example:
“To create a personalised content profile and personalised ads profile vendors can: *Collect information about a user, including a user's activity, interests, demographic information, or location, to create or edit a user profile for personalising content and to use in personalised advertising. *Combine this information with other information previously collected, including from across websites and apps, to create or edit a user profile for use in personalising content and personalised advertising.” Vendors include: LiveRamp, Google Advertising Products, Amazon Advertising, Blockthrough, Inc., Yahoo EMEA Limited
Linking my healthconcerns, interests, demographic information, location, and browsing history to sell on to the highest bidder is not normal - or at least it shouldn’t be - and it’s a violation of the GDPR.

Australia has decided to examine and remove Chinese-made surveillance technology used in government buildings.
Defense Minister Richard Marles on Thursday said the Chinese-made cameras could pose a security risk for the country.
Two companies, Hikvision and Dahua, have provided at least 913 cameras, intercoms, electronic entry systems and video recorders in over 250 Australian government buildings.
Both companies are partly owned by the Chinese government.
"We would have no way of knowing if the sensitive information, images and audio collected by these devices are secretly being sent back to China against the interests of Australian citizens,'' said shadow Minister for Cyber Security James Paterson, who requested the audit.
The checks came after Britain in November announced that it would stop installing Chinese-linked surveillance cameras in sensitive buildings.
Some US states have also banned vendors and products from several Chinese technology companies.
Hikvision rejects claims of security threat
An audit found that equipment from at least one of the two companies was present in almost every government department, except the Agriculture Department and Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Paterson urged the government to "urgently" come up with a plan.
Defense Minister Marles said that issue was significant but added "I don't think we should overstate it."
Hikvision said that to represent the company as a national security threat is "categorically false," as it cannot sell cloud storage, access the video data or manage databases of end users in Australia.
"Our cameras are compliant with all applicable Australian laws and regulations and are subject to strict security requirements," said a spokesperson of the company.
Dahua Technology has not yet responded.
China urges "fair" treatment
Beijing on Thursday accused Canberra of "misusing national might to discriminate against and suppress Chinese enterprises."
"We hope Australia will provide a fair, just and nondiscriminatory environment for the normal operations of Chinese enterprises," said China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. 
According to Paterson, both companies are subject to China's national intelligence law which requires them to cooperate with Chinese intelligence. 
In similar cases, China's general response to such situations has been to defend their high-tech companies and present them as good corporate citizens who play no part in intelligence gathering.

Since then, she hasn’t stopped attacking transgender people. She regularly spreads fearmongering misinformation about how trans women would potentially commit assaults if allowed in women’s restrooms, has written long essays denigrating trans women, repeats baseless conspiracy theories about kids being coerced into transitioning, and promotes transphobic merchandise vendors on social media. Although Carter said that Rowling doesn’t mean her transphobia “aggressively,” she has called a politician who supports trans rights a “destroyer of women’s rights” and her words have been used to kill pro-transgender legislation in the United States.
