ドゥブラヴカ・ウグレシッチ、奥彩子訳『きつね』（白水社）読了。ピリニャークやナボコフを糸口に物語の生まれる現場について語る文学エッセイと思いきや、いつのまにかするっとフィクションが挟み込まれ、どこからどこまでが現実かわからなくなる。これをオートフィクションと呼ぶそうな。面白い。

Very sad to learn of the passing of Dubravka Ugrešić, prolific anti-war, anti-nationalist Yugoslav essayist, novelist, and social critic. May she rest in peace.

Book review, A Muzzle for Witches.

Picked this up entirely because of the title, finished it with a long list of authors to read next (someday?). Blunt and provocative, and while I didn’t agree with everything Ugresic said about women (she kind of slides into that ‘blame women for not standing up for themselves enough’ trap; also, where are the queer folx in her analysis?!), much of what she says hit me really hard. And too much her description of post-1990 Croatian far-right movements and censorship rings prescient, especially given tomorrow. Also have a lot of thoughts about comparative literature and if it’s a discipline rooted in a particular Central European intellectual past, and the difference between world literature as a discipline and the post- and transnational literature Ugresic describes.

Ok, so some last mintues dwelling on the literary Nobel Prize...

Been thinking on Marías. Really like his books. Icelandic author Sjón is perhaps too young but omg what he deservesv it. Maybe they will give it to a woman after all. Both Anne Swärd and Ellen Mattson will be sure to give that a try since it’s their first time in the committee. So maybe Dubravka Ugresic? 

Soon we well know.

Je n’ai jamais aimé faire des photos. J’ai toujours eu une aversion pour les touristes bardés d’appareils, j’ai toujours trouvé ennuyeux d’avoir à feuilleter les albums des autres ou à regarder leurs diapositives. (J’ai toujours considéré la photographie comme quelque chose d’importun, et quand j’ai moi-même pris une photo pour la première fois, j’ai éprouvé un sentiment très bizarre, a écrit la photographe américaine Diane Arbus.)

Lors d’un séjour à l’étranger, j’ai acheté un petit appareil automatique bon marché et j’ai usé quelques pellicules. Au bout d’un certain temps, j’ai regardé ces photos et je me suis rendu compte que je n’avais gardé de ce voyage que le souvenir des scènes que j’avais photographiées. J’ai essayé de me remémorer autre chose, mais ma mémoire s’obstinait à ne me rapporter que le contenu des photos.

Je me suis demandé ce que je me serais rappelé si je n’avais pas pris de photos.
