Ancient Astronauts – Cypher Kabaka (2024)
Tumblr media
Yari looks at Cypher Kabaka, the collaborative album between German hip hop group Ancient Astronauts and Ugandan artist collective BA Cypher Kabaka, released June 27th, 2024, on Switchstance Recordings.
This latest release by Ancient Astronauts, a hip hop group from Germany, is a collab with BA Cypher Kabaka, a diverse collective of MCs, graffiti artists, DJs and breakdancers representing a variety of indigenous cultures of Uganda. The mic skills on display here are excellent, and across the album each MC brings something a little different to the table. Ancient Astronauts have knocked it out of the park with this album, and I know I’ll be continuing to listen to this one well into the future. blue forty-four: Catarrh Nisin vs. 6v9id / Swordman Kitala
Headwrecking industrial Japanese grime on the A side, soul-uplifting Ugandan dancehall on the other.
In some ways blue forty-four is an atypical release for us, but probably in other, more important ways, it isn't.
Swordman Kitala's contributions are more pop than his work for labels like Hakuna Kulala, but still full of edge, and fully idiosyncratic due to that instantly recognisable and roughshod out of pocket flow.
The collaborations between Catarrh Nisin and 6v9id are just huge - dense, crushing, claustrophobic sonic attacks. Everything grime should be in the 2020s.

Part 2 of a series interrogating the track titles for Kaijupop, the debut album of my Soft-Bodied Humans project.
The album is available on LP and digital from @gangofducks at https://gangofducks.bandcamp.com/album/kaijupop
Track 2: Core-Braver
--
Core-Braver (コアブレイバー Koa Bureibā) is a heroic mecha created by Toho that first appeared in episode 2 of Super Fleet Sazer-X, titled "Burn Up! Great-Lio."
Core-Braver is a sleek white and silver humanoid machine with bright yellow eyes and a powerful red laser in his chest.
--
On Kaijupop, Core-Braver features a stand-out performance from the great Swordman Kitala, who rides an off-kilter beat made out repurposed kaiju roars with supreme confidence and skill.
Musically it's difficult to describe - the beat belonged to a subset of tracks I was working on that I dubbed 'wonky pop', which also includes Foksaurus feat. MCpero from the Kaijugrime EP.
These tracks often had chirpy, major-key melodies that bounced playfully on top of abrasive roars, screeches and ear-shattering industrial beats.
I think it just sounds and feels good.

TWISTED CHARACTERS AND THE MUSIC I THINK THEY'D LIKE! (savanaclaw ver.)
Tumblr media
the part two i promised for no one specifically. i'm mainly doing every dorm because i want to -isa<3

LEONA KINGSCHOLAR
I actually think Leona would listen to music fairly frequently. He's a rich kid, I def headcanon he got one of them expensive ass sports cars and probably speeds on the highway blasting music, pissing off literally everyone else tryna drive home from work. His music taste would be surprisingly diverse, too. He'd probably like a mix of 2000s rnb which includes like Rihanna, Ne-Yo, AALIYAH SO OBVIOUSLY, Akon, and he'd be a (not obsessive) Beyonce stan. He'd listen to NYC and UK drill, and since I headcanon Sunset Savanna to be an East African inspired nation, he'd probably have some Kenyan/Tanzanian/Ugandan/Rwandan artists on his playlist too (since those countries are where Swahili is spoken widely.) I don't have any artists to name but if yall know some put me on.

RUGGIE BUCCHI
Ruggie, similar to Leona would have diverse music taste. Probably grew up surrounded by music, listening to whatever was on the radio while cooking sum for his grandmother, and now he uses one of Leona's ten credit cards to pay for his Spotify premium. He def listens to albums when he's chilling on his bed, studying/trying to unwind after a long day of running around. Though he grew up on similar traditional East African music, his favorite genres (IN MY OPINION) would be alternative hip hop and indie music. He LOVESSSSS Kanye West (tcd to yeezus), Tyler the Creator (and honestly all of OFWGKTA), Gorillaz, Childish Gambino, Vampire Weekend, and early alternative hip hop artists like the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, etc. He was also probably put onto Britpop through Gorillaz, and likes Blur, Oasis, and (it's a secret tho) he fucks with Radiohead's "ok computer" album.

JACK HOWL
Jack is a canon gym rat. we already know he listens to music like HELL while he's bench pressing and doing pushups. I think he'd have similar music taste to Ruggie, excluding the "indie" part. (and he probably uses apple music, too.) Jack enjoys alternative hip-hop, and west coast hip-hop. He'd like Kanye and some of Tyler's popular songs, but he'd REALLY enjoy early 90s west coast rap like N.W.A, Dr. Dre. 2PAC ESPECIALLY, KENDRICK LAMAR ESPECIALLY. His favorite album is probably good kid maad city.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. If you have a full number full of racist & transmisogynist lyrics that are never addressed or challenged by the show itself, you just have a racist & transmisogynist musical number. We do not get to engage with Thai culture, meet Thai characters (to my knowledge of the productions im aware of) beyond this song. Nothing about Bangkok as a setting in this musical is made special that the writers wouldn't be able to swap it out for a different country. We already know Freddie is a bigoted asshole - it is not new information to the viewer. What the song does is draw upon existing stereotypes for Thailand, like sex tourism, and then just leaves it all as it is when the number ends. It draws upon an existing history of Orientalist depictions of Asia as an "exotic & sexual" place.
Imo the themes around anticommunism could have also been handled much better, but the show at least still gives us a plethora of characters from the USSR to engage with.
If we ever get a revival, I think it's worth considering changing the ACTII setting, or at least, having a different song to showcase Freddie's disdain. Like I know people who have never heard of chess the musical aside from "one night in bangkok" and their takeaway is not "this is a song talking abt a man's racist perspective on a country", they just see it as a catchy 80s tune. even if that was the intent it's not really the impact.
the good and bad of "chess pa svenska" (in my biased opinion)
the good:
one night in bangkok is no longer a full song number (though i would argue they should have removed it altogether. song is inherently racist & transmisogynistic and does not add anything to the overall musical)
svetlana gets more to do and say! (and look awesome in the fur coat)
florence gets to have fun at a disco! this might seem like a shallow thing but i like that she also gets to have fun and be herself without being attached to a man. even when she is being a bit destructive with it
more detail in set design & a lot of nice small details that shows they did their research wrt russian culture in the ussr (my favorite small bit is anatoly doing a three-fingered cross while sitting on his bed)
overall nice to see a full stage with costumes and whatnot for this musical
the bad
while svetlana is given more to do, i don't appreciate that her final number is boiled down to a "i deserve him more than you" with florence. i think she should have gotten to keep her hatred and instead sing a warning to florence, of sorts. but ofc i could be missing something here?
it also feels like this florence does not care about chess itself as much. which i admit is a bit of a nitpick
i don't buy florence and anatoly's connection here as much because the entire musical takes place over a few days
i think they could have still kept the number with the merchadisers to satirize merano's selling out to consumers
the arbiter's character is uh... something. he is absolutely goofy in the original as well but this writing of him absolutely did not work.
