Il mondo del gaming non è più una mia priorità dagli anni ’90, periodo in cui la maggior parte degli attuali giocatori forse non era neanche nata. Trascorrevo molto tempo a giocare sul mio Amiga 2000 (dove ho iniziato a fare grafica) ma ricordo con affetto la console Atari 2600 con cui ho conosciuto Pac-Man e mi sono avvicinato per la prima volta alla tecnologia.

Le console e i computer rimangono le piattaforme preferite dai giocatori ma gli smartphone hanno ripreso il settore del “portable gaming” e l’hanno fatto crescere fino a diventare il più importante, sia per numeri che per fatturato. Il telefono è sempre con noi, offre molta varietà di titoli, spesso anche gratuiti, e si presta meglio a riempire senza impegno le piccole pause del quotidiano. Ecco perché oggi si parla di casual e mobile gaming. Ma cosa succede se si cerca di spingere al massimo l’esperienza di gioco anche su smartphone?

Ha battuto questa strada ASUS, con i suoi ROG Phone, ma anche Xiaomi con Black Shark e persino Razer. L’anno scorso io ho provato invece un modello della linea gaming di Nubia, ovvero il Red Magic 3s (recensione). Specifiche al top, bello schermo da 90Hz, grande batteria e tanti accessori pensati per avvicinare l’esperienza di gioco mobile a quella classica. Dovendo privilegiare questi aspetti se ne sono sacrificati altri, come la portabilità o lo fotografia, ma anche il design poteva essere un deterrente per quanti lo volevano valutare al di fuori dell’ambito gaming per il buon rapporto prezzo/qualità.

Ancora più completo

Quest’anno l’azienda ha voluto portare ancora più in alto l’asticella con il Red Magic 5G, un modello che incrementa le prestazioni e colma alcune lacune del 3S. Il nome svela già una prima novità, ovvero la connettività 5G, che, per quanto non sia ancora molto diffusa, rappresenta sicuramente un elemento di richiamo per il consumatore. Mi è stata inviata per la recensione la versione con 8GB di RAM (LPDDR5) e 128GB di memoria (UFS 3.0), che ha un prezzo di vendita di 579€. Ma esiste anche una versione superiore da 649€ con 12/256GB.

Hardware senza compromessi

Il SoC prescelto è il Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, mentre nel 3S si trovava il precedente 855+. Ci sono tanti altri top di gamma recenti che lo usano ma nel Red Magic 5G c’è una caratteristica che gli consente di farlo andare meglio: il raffreddamento a liquido. Sembra assurdo solo a sentirlo dire, ma è così. Il sistema funziona grazie ad una ventola che raggiunge i 16.000 rpm ed un flusso d’aria garantito da due feritoie laterali (quindi niente resistenza all’acqua).

Ora, i SoC ARM nascono fanless ma questo non significa che non riscaldino andando incontro ad una potenziale riduzione delle prestazioni. Nell’uso quotidiano non di certo, difatti la dissipazione sui prodotti da gaming si attiva solo nell’area di gioco, ma in questa ci offre la possibilità di spremere tutto il potenziale del processore octa-core e della GPU Adreno 650.

A completare il quadro troviamo anche NFC, che colma una bella lacuna del precedente 3S, nonché Wi-Fi 6 e Bluetooth 5.1 con supporto aptX. Il sensore d’impronta è stato spostato sotto lo schermo, con risultati un po’ così. L’ultimo aggiornamento lo ha un po’ migliorato e, quando funziona, è velocissimo.

Il problema è che non è affidabile al 100%: c’è sempre quella volta o due su dieci che non ti riconosce al primo tentativo. Altro aspetto su cui sono un po’ critico è la vibrazione: è quel classico “buzz” vecchia scuola che si trova ancora troppo spesso negli smartphone Android.

Non per deboli di cuore

Converrete con me che, in genere, eleganza e gaming sono concetti agli antipodi. Però anche con lucine e linee aggressive si può fare bene e si può fare male. Il precedente 3S difficilmente poteva piacere ad un utente “normale” mente il 5G in colorazione Eclipse Black mi sembra più sobrio. Ne hanno fatto anche delle versioni sgargianti e bi-color davvero esagerate, ma quella nera lucida mostra le decorazioni sul retro della scocca solo sotto luce diretta e anche le 4 linee rosse quasi non si vedono se non frontalmente. Inoltre anche il gruppo camere ora è piuttosto tradizionale. Insomma, non sto a dirvi che sia un design pulito ma qui è quasi tutto tono su tono, quindi non si arriva agli accessi del 3S.

Dove invece non ci sono mezze misure è sull’ergonomia. Con uno schermo così grande ed un peso di 218g, non è certamente uno smartphone comodamente tascabile o usabile con una mano. Inoltre lo schermo è tutto intero (senza notch) ma sopra e sotto è stato mantenuto un po’ di bordo per migliorare l’ergonomia in fase di gioco, infatti si possono poggiare un minimo le mani senza attivare tocchi involontari.

Audio forte…

La configurazione audio del Red Magic 5G prevede due speaker, uno dei quali è la capsula auricolare. In pratica è la soluzione che usa Apple sugli iPhone da alcuni anni e riesce effettivamente ad offrire buona spazialità. Se guardiamo agli altri smartphone qui c’è tanto più volume e qualità, cosa che rende sicuramente più immersiva l’esperienza di gioco. Però si ha come l’impressione che questa potenza non sia ben controllata, infatti ai massimi regimi è facile che le basse frequenze distorcano e le alte vadano in clipping. Su volume medio si sente decisamente meglio e, qualora si volesse avere più separazione dall’ambiente, c’è sempre il mini-jack per collegare delle cuffie.

Un vero gigante

Lo schermo AMOLED da 6,65″ è enorme e piuttosto ben riuscito, sia sul fronte dei numeri che sull’effettiva realizzazione. Si nota anche poco color shifting di lato, per cui è molto meglio rispetto al precedente 3S. Abbiamo poi la copertura al 100% dello spazio colore DCI-P3 e 2340 x 1080 pixel, offrendo un’esperienza di gioco in Full HD con una densità di 388ppi ed un rapporto di forma di 19.5:9. Allungato, ma non troppo.

È davvero molto luminoso e presenta anche la modalità filtro blu per proteggere gli occhi di sera. L’unica cosa che non ho apprezzato è il controllo automatico della luminosità: a volte scurisce o schiarisce lo schermo di tanto pur stando perfettamente fermi nella medesima posizione. Mi ha dato così fastidio che l’ho disattivato.

Molto positiva l’introduzione dell’always-on display, che mancava sul 3S. Per altro si può personalizzare sia nello stile dell’orologio che aggiungendo delle immagini e persino animazioni. Piuttosto sfiziosa come cosa, anche se più elementi e colori ci sono, più batteria verrà consumata, quindi meglio non esagerare. L’aspetto più interessante, però, è di sicuro nella frequenza di refresh, che raggiunge addirittura i 144Hz. Molto valida anche la frequenza di campionamento del tocco di ben 240Hz.

Liscio come il burro

Sul fronte prestazioni il Red Magic 5G non ha molti rivali e migliora l’esperienza anche grazie all’ottima frequenza di refresh dello schermo. Di default è impostato su 90Hz per contenere i consumi e va già molto bene, ma a 144Hz le animazioni scorrono lisce e morbide come il burro. Una sensazione che sui terminali Android non è così frequente e che, una volta provata, è difficile abbandonare.

Il sistema operativo è basato su Android 10 con un launcher nativo semplice ma non molto rifinito. Purtroppo non sono riuscito a cambiarlo in nessun modo, perché l’opzione c’è ma non sembra sortire alcun effetto. Comunque non è proprio terribile e ci si fa l’abitudine, anche alle voci di menu non ancora tradotte in italiano.

Utilità e amenità

Non mancano la modalità scura dell’interfaccia, il controllo con gesture, lo split screen, il non disturbare programmato, l’intervento sul colore dello schermo, ecc.. ma ci sono anche delle opzioni create ad hoc per personalizzare l’esperienza di gioco e l’aspetto del device. In particolare è interessante la presenza di due LED sul retro: uno rosso con il logo dell’azienda che si può accendere, spegnere o far pulsare; ed uno RGB con la scritta Red Magic che è ben più interessante poiché, oltre alla questione puramente estetica, si può personalizzare nel colore e nell’effetto anche in base alle notifiche, ai messaggi o alle chiamate. Una piccola attenzione che mi è mancata è che se si fanno pulsare sia il logo che la scritta questi non saranno sincronizzati. Peccato.

Lo switch laterale attiva il Game Space, ovvero una schermata per la modalità di gioco. Da qui si possono lanciare quelli installati e personalizzare il comportamento del dispositivo. Possiamo ad esempio accendere o spegnere l’areazione, disattivare le notifiche e le chiamate in ingresso (comodissimo), modificare il refresh rate dello schermo, registrare immagini e video.

All’interno dei giochi avviati dal Game Space possiamo attivare il pannello di opzioni con uno swipe laterale ed avremo altre funzioni utili come i profili per spingere più o meno l’hardware o la personalizzazione dei due tasti soft-touch superiori. Questi trigger non fanno nulla di base ma attivandoli si può scegliere l’area dello schermo su cui agiscono. Dunque avremo due pulsanti sensibili al tocco che simuleranno la nostra pressione in punti specifici dello schermo, potendoli adattare alle interfacce dei diversi giochi.

Il tutto funziona abbastanza bene e anche l’interfaccia del Game Space è curata. Ovviamente con stile aggressivo da gaming, ma senza storture o elementi fuori luogo.

Più spendi, meno dura

Per il capitolo batteria la situazione è piuttosto ballerina. Intendo dire che se non si gioca, si tengono tutte le lucine spente e il refresh rate dello schermo a 90Hz, i 4500mAh mostrano i muscoli e l’autonomia può arrivare ad un paio di giorni. Se invece lo portiamo a 144Hz, attiviamo la modalità di prestazioni più elevate con raffreddamento al massimo e giochiamo a titoli impegnativi, in un paio d’ore circa siamo a secco.

Sicuramente positiva la presenza di un caricatore molto veloce in dotazione, che in soli 15 minuti ci porta al 50% di carica. Tuttavia mi sarebbe piaciuto avere anche la ricarica wireless, perché avrebbe consentito di fare più facilmente qualche rapido pit-stop durante il giorno.

Foto e video

Frontalmente c’è una classica fotocamera da “selfie” che mi è parsa sufficiente, ma nulla di più. Ha quelle funzioni bellezza che vanno di moda sugli Android ma che non ti fanno diventare Brad Pitt, purtroppo. Ha 8MP, obiettivo con apertura f/2 e video FullHD: diciamo che fa il suo lavoro ma va messa nelle giuste condizioni. Al buio o in controluce fa le bizze. La questione diventa più interessante dietro, dove abbiamo ben 3 fotocamere. Non sono ostentate come nel vecchio 3S e come in tanti altri modelli in commercio, ma va detto che lo spessore dello smartphone in quell’area è piuttosto importante, quindi deve essere stato relativamente facile non farle sporgere.

La principale arriva a 64MP, con quel sensore Sony che si trova in moltissimi smartphone Android di questi tempi. e la lente è un 26mm (equivalente) con apertura f/1.8. Poi c’è una 8MP ultrawide con obiettivo f/2 da 12mm (equiv) e, infine, una Macro da MP. Quest’ultima si vede spesso ultimamente, specie negli smartphone che vogliono aumentare la conta di camere tanto per. Proprio qualche minuto prima di scrivere queste righe, ho deciso di fare qualche scatto tanto per confermare l’ipotesi che fosse completamente inutile, ma non ho ottenuto quello che speravo.

Per curiosità ho provato a farne una uguale con iPhone 11 Pro Max e in effetti non si arriva così vicini ai soggetti. Il punto è che però sono solo 2MP e per altro scatta anche veloce per non far uscire foto mosse (e ci riesce) ma poi il risultato ha poca definizione ed è così compresso da sembrare un acquerello. Quindi in termini realistici è praticamente meglio fare un crop dell’immagine principale, però io credo che la funzionalità qui sia più legata al divertimento di scattare immagini un po’ insolite che si possono condividere benissimo sui social. Quindi non è assolutamente fondamentale e l’utilità è discutibile, però sono partito dal valutarla una schifezza ed ho finito per divertirmi ad usarla. E questo qualcosa conta, almeno per me. Vi lascio qualche esempio.

In generale la UX dell’app non è proprio riuscita. Non che abbia bug o malfunzionamenti (anche se mi è uscita una foto tutta verde come fosse un errore in fase di registrazione) ma non è pensata benissimo. Ad esempio nella modalità standard non possiamo attivare la camera wide o la macro. Per quest’ultima c’è un modo separato nella prima schermata “camera-family” con le funzioni extra e per la wide si deve andare per forza nella modalità Pro. Una cosa che non ha alcun senso.

La foto qui sopra è stata fatta in automatico e poi ho solo sistemato qualcosina in post produzione. Giusto per curiosità vi lascio il JPG originale a 64MP del Red Magic 5G e poi lo stesso scattato con iPhone 11 Pro Max. Secondo me tutta questa risoluzione non serve a molto, infatti non vedo più dettagli reali rispetto ai 12MP di iPhone ma per lo più una maggiore spinta di micro-contrasto. Poi magari in altre condizioni potrebbe notarsi di più o di meno, ma di certo non c’è una crescita di qualità corrispettiva ai MP.

Non è un cameraphone, questo è chiaro, ma le foto non vengono male anche scattando in automatico e rispetto al precedente 3S c’è un’intera galassia di differenza. Tant’è che solo il fatto che mi sia venuto in mente di confrontarlo con uno degli migliori smartphone sul fronte fotografico è in realtà un bel complimento per Red Magic.

L’esposizione è giusta, il bilanciamento del bianco mi piace perché è proprio neutro e gli scatti appaiono molto bene sullo schermo dello smartphone. Rispetto ad un modello top di gamma gli manca l’efficienza nel recupero ombre, però non brucia le luci per mantenerle visibili. Quindi ti tira fuori delle immagini che in realtà sono più naturali nella gestione della gamma dinamica, con delle aree anche molto buie che sembrano quasi i profili di scatto di Leica sui Huawei. Detta così sembra che faccia miracoli, in realtà è semplicemente che mi hanno un po’ nauseato le foto con quell’HDR esagerato che fanno anche gli iPhone. Ad esempio vi lascio questo confronto in cui non vi dico qual è dell’iPhone e quale del Red Magic, ma ci dovreste arrivare per quanto ho detto.

Piccola nota per la modalità notte, che è presente e illumina tanto tanto, ma non è naturale nella resa. Sembra solo che tiri in alto l’esposizione su tutto, cosa che in effetti ci fa vedere bene anche senza luce, però l’effetto finale non è organico e pulito come su quella degli iPhone. Comunque funziona, e già questo è un bene.

Sul fronte video c’è l’8K, il 4K a 60fps e la stabilizzazione non funziona affatto male (ma non c’è sull’8K). Inoltre può registrare in H.264, HEVC o HDR/HLG. Quest’ultimo non fa una grande differenza, però nell’insieme è andato oltre le mie aspettative. Devo dire che queste erano molto basse, ma non era scontato che se la cavasse dignitosamente in quest’ambito considerando che il suo focus è completamente diverso.

Conclusione

Non è facile per me trarre delle conclusioni su questo Red Magic 5G. E lo dico non perché non lo consideri interessante, altrimenti non gli avrei dedicato neanche il tempo per testarlo. Anzi, il problema è che questa volta è andato così vicino a piacermi sul piano personale che ho sentito di più quelle due o tre finezze che effettivamente gli mancano. Non vado a cavillare sul design, perché il suo target è quello e dunque non lo possiamo valutare con il metro che useremmo per un normale smartphone. E se lo guardo con gli occhi del gamer un po’ sopito che è ancora in me, devo dire che ho molto apprezzato il cambio di rotta rispetto al 3S. Anche sulle dimensioni non sono critico, perché è certamente un padellone ma se poi giochi o guardi contenuti video, ti ripaga ad ogni fotogramma. Soprattutto se attivi la modalità 144Hz che, se non erro, è attualmente un primato per il settore. Utile o inutile? Secondo me non ti cambia la vita, però sul fatto che si noti non ho dubbi: si vede e si vede parecchio. L’hardware va benissimo e la gestione delle risorse con il Game Space è piuttosto curata, così come le funzionalità correlate. L’audio non è molto definito ma è forte, quindi basta non esagerare col volume e si va bene, anche perché la separazione stereo funziona e diffonde a dovere. Sul piano costruttivo è anche fatto bene e piacevole in mano per via della bombatura e il materiale. Quindi, dando per scontato che non ci si può lamentare per scelte di stile o dimensione che sono strettamente correlate alla natura del prodotto, cosa non mi è piaciuto?

Prima di tutto il fatto che il software sia un po’ meh. A parte la mancanza di alcune traduzioni, nelle impostazioni sembra tutto troppo poco amichevole. E il fatto che al momento di questa recensione non funzioni (almeno sul mio esemplare) il cambio di launcher mi ha un po’ infastidito. Però si riesce ad ottenere uno stile sufficientemente sobrio pur godendo di alcune chicche simpatiche come la personalizzazione grafica in always-on. C’è tuttavia qualche bug, come quello della luminosità automatica, e rimane da chiedersi quanto sarà seguito con gli aggiornamenti, cosa per la quale non so onestamente darvi una risposta certa. Mi sembra di capire che un paio d’anni di supporto ci siano, ma sul 3S Android 10 credo sia arrivato solo a marzo 2020. Per cui l’aspetto software, in generale, è una potenziale criticità. Ho apprezzato però l’assenza di app spazzatura preinstallate, infatti l’esperienza è vagamente simile a quella stock.

Poi c’è il discorso che non è stato possibile renderlo resistente all’acqua, il sensore d’impronta con questa tecnologia che ancora non funziona a dovere e il fatto che non supporti la ricarica wireless, seppure con quella batteria sarebbe stata piuttosto lunga e impegnativa. A voler essere puntiglioso ne potrei trovare anche altri di difetti, come la vibrazione zanzarosa, il dondolamento sul dorso curvo, il fatto che manchi l’espansione con microSD o che non ci sia una coverina in dotazione (perché non essendo un modello mainstream non è facilissimo trovarne in giro). Inoltre a me è arrivato con il caricatore non italiano, ma potrebbe essere stato solo un errore. Di due cose sono invece sicuro: c’è stato un cambio di qualità complessiva davvero enorme rispetto al 3S e adesso ha tutte le carte in tavola per competere con i diretti concorrenti e raggiungere anche il pubblico italiano (per altro ha pure guadagnato NFC). A livello di specifiche per prezzo il rapporto rimane molto favorevole, ma iniziano ad essere cifre importanti e posso capire che molti preferiscano andare sul sicuro con un modello di un marchio commerciale preso su Amazon. E in effetti non è che lo consiglierei a tutti o a cuor leggero, ma se questa proposizione di valori vi può interessare, se il gaming su smartphone è per voi un’abitudine, e volete un dispositivo con prestazioni ottime senza svenarvi, un pensierino a questo Red Magic 5G dovreste sicuramente farlo.

L’ex top di gamma prodotto da HTC è anche uno dei più performanti. Un dispositivo di fascia alta abbastanza costoso ma capace di prestazioni veramente interessanti, tra i miglior smartphone HTC del 2018.

Rappresenta la nuova generazione della tecnologia della ditta, che ha potenziato sia il comparto hardware che quello software, prestando particolare attenzione al comparto fotografico e agli speaker.

Scatta foto molto belle, nitide e dettagliate, grazie all’abbinamento di una fotocamera posteriore da 13 megapixel e una anteriore da 5 megapixel. Le potenzialità sono molte: Touch Focus, Autofocus, Geotagging, HDR, RAw, Zoom digitale, Stabilizzatore ottico e dual flash LED.
