New mission to create total solar eclipses in space
A UK team of researchers including UCL's Professor Lucie Green are working on the launch of a spacecraft mission that will allow us to view the sun's atmosphere in more detail than ever before.
The proposed MESOM mission will enable researchers to study the conditions that create solar storms, leading to improvements in forecasts of space weather on Earth.
The MESOM spacecraft will fly on a peculiar trajectory enabled by the gravitational attraction of the Earth, the sun and the moon, and will use the shadow of the moon to re-create a total solar eclipse in space once every lunar month lasting almost 50 minutes.
Total solar eclipses seen from Earth are much shorter and only last between 10 seconds and 7.5 minutes, with the annular solar eclipse in the Southern Hemisphere this Wednesday 2 October expected to last around seven minutes.
Creating a longer eclipse in space will enable the MESOM team to take high-quality images and measurements of the sun's corona, filling gaps in existing understanding of the physical processes taking place in the solar atmosphere that lead to space weather.
Space weather is not a danger to people or animals on Earth, but solar flares and eruptions from the sun known as coronal mass ejections can cause severe disruption to power grids, satellites and other communication technologies on which modern society depends.
Professor Lucie Green (Mullard Space Science Laboratory at UCL), who is a member of the core UK team leading the mission alongside Aberystwyth University and the Space Center at the University of Surrey, said, "MESOM will offer scientists a unique opportunity to study and understand how the sun creates and controls weather in space.
"But MESOM also offers the general public an opportunity to engage with the beauty and spectacle of a total solar eclipse as all our images will be readily available. We aim to reveal the secrets of the sun while inspiring a new generation of space scientists and engineers."
Professor Huw Morgan, of Aberystwyth University, said, "As we become globally more dependent on wireless technologies, there is a growing risk of major disruption to everyday life on Earth as a result of space weather.
"MESOM is an incredibly exciting mission which will advance our scientific understanding of the solar atmosphere and space weather to new levels, enabling us to provide more accurate forecasts and take mitigating action.
"In Aberystwyth, as members of the core UK team, we are closely involved in a study mapping out the feasibility of the mission which is due to be launched in the early 2030s. We are also working with international experts in solar physics, solar atmospherics and leading experience in solar-observing space missions."
Dr. Nicola Baresi from the Surrey Space Center said, "Both solar flares and coronal mass ejections originate from the innermost layers of the sun's atmosphere, which remains elusive to current space-based instrumentation and can only be viewed in greater detail during total eclipses.
"By creating eclipses that last up to 48 minutes in space, rather than the maximum 7.5 minutes we manage to see on Earth, we stand a much better chance of unlocking their secrets."

as has customary around here, i do a post match analysis after a united game but today’s is going to be slightly different so here we go:
thank you erik ten hag for everything you have done in the last 9 months cos if u told me after we got humiliated by brighton and brentford at the start of the season that come end of feb, we would have one trophy, comfortably in the top 4, still in the europa league and fa cup and could very well win 4 trophies this season i would have asked you to go and get ur head checked out. i didn’t have faith in this team at all and i certainly didn’t think we would be in the position we are.
not only has erik got us back to winning ways but he has made watching united way more enjoyable and for the first time in a long time, watching united doesn’t feel like straight up torture
ik ik it’s only the carabao cup, it’s meaningless, it’s a mickey mouse cup etc etc but for a lot of the players it’s their first ever major trophy and for the vast majority it’s their first trophy they have won with man united and winning any trophy at man united is extremely amazing
the way we have rapha n casemiro who have won countless ucls, la ligas and a world cup for rapha as well as licha all celebrating like mad just shows how much this result means to the players
it’s been 6 long years of pain as a united fan but we got their in the end. there were times where i questioned is it worth it but i’m glad i stuck by this team and this is only just the beginning
goes w out saying the match was a solid 10/10 and now it’s onto west ham for the fa cup on wednesday up the reds!

UCL: Osimhen will make difference for Napoli against AC Milan – Lavezzi
Tumblr media
Former Napoli forward, Ezequiel Lavezzi believes Victor Osimhen will be the game-changer for his former club against AC Milan next week. The Partenopei fell to a 1-0 defeat against AC Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final contest at the San Siro on Wednesday night. Both teams will square up again in the reverse fixture at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium next Tuesday. Osimhen missed the first leg due to a muscle injury but is expected to be back for the return leg. Former Argentina striker, Lavezzi stated that his presence would be vital for Luciano Spalletti’s side. “Napoli played a good game, regardless of the result. I think that in the return leg, they will find Osimhen again, who acts as a point of reference up front, attacks the space, and makes the opposing defenders struggle a lot,” Lavezzi told Tutto Napoli. Osimhen has scored four times in five appearances in the Champions League this season. Read the full article

Britain's colonial shame: Slave-owners given huge payouts after abolition
David Cameron’s ancestors were among the wealthy families who received generous reparation payments that would be worth millions of pounds in today’s money
By Sanchez Manning, Independent —
The true scale of Britain’s involvement in the slave trade has been laid bare in documents revealing how the country’s wealthiest families received the modern equivalent of billions of pounds in compensation after slavery was abolished.
The previously unseen records show exactly who received what in payouts from the Government when slave ownership was abolished by Britain – much to the potential embarrassment of their descendants. Dr Nick Draper from University College London, who has studied the compensation papers, says as many as one-fifth of wealthy Victorian Britons derived all or part of their fortunes from the slave economy.
As a result, there are now wealthy families all around the UK still indirectly enjoying the proceeds of slavery where it has been passed on to them. Dr Draper said: “There was a feeding frenzy around the compensation.” A John Austin, for instance, owned 415 slaves, and got compensation of £20,511, a sum worth nearly £17m today. And there were many who received far more.
Academics from UCL, including Dr Draper, spent three years drawing together 46,000 records of compensation given to British slave-owners into an internet database to be launched for public use on Wednesday. But he emphasised that the claims set to be unveiled were not just from rich families but included many “very ordinary men and women” and covered the entire spectrum of society.
Dr Draper added that the database’s findings may have implications for the “reparations debate”. Barbados is currently leading the way in calling for reparations from former colonial powers for the injustices suffered by slaves and their families.
Among those revealed to have benefited from slavery are ancestors of the Prime Minister, David Cameron, former minister Douglas Hogg, authors Graham Greene and George Orwell, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and the new chairman of the Arts Council, Peter Bazalgette. Other prominent names which feature in the records include scions of one of the nation’s oldest banking families, the Barings, and the second Earl of Harewood, Henry Lascelles, an ancestor of the Queen’s cousin. Some families used the money to invest in the railways and other aspects of the industrial revolution; others bought or maintained their country houses, and some used the money for philanthropy. George Orwell’s great-grandfather, Charles Blair, received £4,442, equal to £3m today, for the 218 slaves he owned.
The British government paid out £20m to compensate some 3,000 families that owned slaves for the loss of their “property” when slave-ownership was abolished in Britain’s colonies in 1833. This figure represented a staggering 40 per cent of the Treasury’s annual spending budget and, in today’s terms, calculated as wage values, equates to around £16.5bn.
A total of £10m went to slave-owning families in the Caribbean and Africa, while the other half went to absentee owners living in Britain. The biggest single payout went to James Blair (no relation to Orwell), an MP who had homes in Marylebone, central London, and Scotland. He was awarded £83,530, the equivalent of £65m today, for 1,598 slaves he owned on the plantation he had inherited in British Guyana.
But this amount was dwarfed by the amount paid to John Gladstone, the father of 19th-century prime minister William Gladstone. He received £106,769 (modern equivalent £83m) for the 2,508 slaves he owned across nine plantations. His son, who served as prime minister four times during his 60-year career, was heavily involved in his father’s claim.
Mr Cameron, too, is revealed to have slave owners in his family background on his father’s side. The compensation records show that General Sir James Duff, an army officer and MP for Banffshire in Scotland during the late 1700s, was Mr Cameron’s first cousin six times removed. Sir James, who was the son of one of Mr Cameron’s great-grand-uncle’s, the second Earl of Fife, was awarded £4,101, equal to more than £3m today, to compensate him for the 202 slaves he forfeited on the Grange Sugar Estate in Jamaica.
Another illustrious political family that it appears still carries the name of a major slave owner is the Hogg dynasty, which includes the former cabinet minister Douglas Hogg. They are the descendants
Douglas Hogg. They are the descendants of Charles McGarel, a merchant who made a fortune from slave ownership. Between 1835 and 1837 he received £129,464, about £101m in today’s terms, for the 2,489 slaves he owned. McGarel later went on to bring his younger brother-in-law Quintin Hogg into his hugely successful sugar firm, which still used indentured labour on plantations in British Guyana established under slavery. And it was Quintin’s descendants that continued to keep the family name in the limelight, with both his son, Douglas McGarel Hogg, and his grandson, Quintin McGarel Hogg, becoming Lord Chancellor.
Dr Draper said: “Seeing the names of the slave-owners repeated in 20th‑century family naming practices is a very stark reminder about where those families saw their origins being from. In this case I’m thinking about the Hogg family. To have two Lord Chancellors in Britain in the 20th century bearing the name of a slave-owner from British Guiana, who went penniless to British Guyana, came back a very wealthy man and contributed to the formation of this political dynasty, which incorporated his name into their children in recognition – it seems to me to be an illuminating story and a potent example.”
Mr Hogg refused to comment yesterday, saying he “didn’t know anything about it”. Mr Cameron declined to comment after a request was made to the No 10 press office.
Another demonstration of the extent to which slavery links stretch into modern Britain is Evelyn Bazalgette, the uncle of one of the giants of Victorian engineering, Sir Joseph Bazalgette and ancestor of Arts Council boss Sir Peter Bazalgette. He was paid £7,352 (£5.7m in today’s money) for 420 slaves from two estates in Jamaica. Sir Peter said yesterday: “It had always been rumoured that his father had some interests in the Caribbean and I suspect Evelyn inherited that. So I heard rumours but this confirms it, and guess it’s the sort of thing wealthy people on the make did in the 1800s. He could have put his money elsewhere but regrettably he put it in the Caribbean.”
The TV chef Ainsley Harriott, who had slave-owners in his family on his grandfather’s side, said yesterday he was shocked by the amount paid out by the government to the slave-owners. “You would think the government would have given at least some money to the freed slaves who need to find homes and start new lives,” he said. “It seems a bit barbaric. It’s like the rich protecting the rich.”
The database is available from Wednesday at: ucl.ac.uk/lbs.
I posted this because this racist filth, Hunter, Birkin and their spoiled rich friends have made a game after sending trolls after Benedict, a working actor not worth 1/1000th of most of the other people in the database, as if he is to blame for every fucking thing under the Sun. I will start posting these names and finding others to post in response. They also left out that although most of the funds were paid out, it's the actual banks and lenders that were borrowed from who the British government has been paying off, including of course, the hugely wealthy Rothchilds.

UCL: "let’s enjoy ourselves" - Fernandez urges Chelsea stars never to be afraid of Real Madrid
Tumblr media
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has told his teammates to enjoy their game when they come up against La Liga champions Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday. Fernandez, who joined the Blues in January, called on his teammates to play without fear against the defending champions at the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea are in Spain to face Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-final of the competition. The Blues are going into the game on the back of a poor run of results in the Premier League, where they sit 11th in the league and will start as the heavy underdogs. “I try not to have pressure in football, just to enjoy it. There is responsibility in this match, but there is no pressure. I always try to enjoy . You don’t have to be afraid. “No pressure. I’m going to try and enjoy the match,” he said.
