My Master Has No Tail
Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai, or My Master Has No Tail, is one of the anime I have been following this season. And I have been loving it for 3 reasons. 1 - Mameda the Tanuki. Growing up constantly belittled by other Tanuki on her home island for working on her transformation she strived to head out to the main land and trick humans just as he father had done before her. However she is living at a changing of times in Japan’s history. Westernization and industrialization has begun, and the people do not fall for her tricks. Luckily she comes across a mysterious woman and watches her perform rakugo, a type of tradition theater/storytelling. The woman, Bunko Daikokutei, enthralls our little troublemaker and after the performer ends up saving her, Mameda makes it her goal to perform rakugo, too. And thus the journey of a goofy but sincerly determined tanuki begins. 2 - Rakugo. An old style of performance done with 1 performer (and on occasion a back up instrument or 2). Their only physical tools are a wooden block and wooden fan, both to keep the pace of the story and the audience’s attention. Beyond that it is one person on their knees performing multiple roles through the use of slight body movement and changes in tone. Tough, but getting the wanted reaction out of a crowd is a great reward. 3 - Theater. I have a bit of history with theater, so getting to learn about an old style from another country is always a treat. There have even been a few moments during my watching where my reaction is “THIS! This is what it means to be a part of theater.” After all, while a rakugo is performed by one, that one is still supported by the rest of the people on the team. Tea, pillows, accompaniment, ushers, everyone is on the same team and the shared goal is “give the audience a great experience”. So, if you like tanuki shenanigans, performing arts, or even a bit of history, then I invite you into the theater and hope you enjoy the performance. EDIT; also stick around after the credits for the shorts after each episode where Mameda explains more about the story performed in each episode.

I also finished Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai. It’s about a tanuki who takes on a human form in order to learn rakugo so she can trick people with her stories. The series takes place during the Taisho era in Osaka and combines my love for traditional Japanese arts in the form of rakugo, my obsession with traditional clothes since most characters are wearing kimono, the gem that is Taisho era fashion in particular (although we could’ve seen more of it), the amazing historical atmosphere and plenty of kansai-ben which I always find a joy to listen to.
The series looks and feels nice, but isn’t anything spectacular I’d go out of my way to watch or recommend. The story itself is pretty simple, some episodes were about the supernatural and some were about human problems, with plenty of comedy and fairly lighthearted moments. I tried my best not to compare it with Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu too much, since it’s the other rakugo anime I know of, it’s an amazing series and it made me appreciate rakugo. The comparison feels unfair since besides some similarities, the two shows have different goals and genres. At the same time Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu made me excited for more rakugo and Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai let me down. The voice work wasn’t as good and they didn’t build up or play out the stories as well as SGRS did, although it was great to hear Akira Ishida do rakugo again as a side character in one of the episodes! I also didn’t like how simple and easy the progression was for the main character. There were a few setbacks, but you could always tell she’d get through them so there weren’t any real stakes at play ever, even though it’s supposed to be hard to become a rakugoka.
My favourite thing about the series apart from the setting was the older generation. I almost wish we could’ve gotten a series about them instead! I looooved Ayana Taketatsu as Enshi so much I picked up another seasonal anime she stars in, and like I mentioned earlier it’s always a joy to listen to Akira Ishida, even though this role had him as an old man who wouldn’t stop coughing, really doing his voice dirty.
Im glad I ended up watching this, I was a little unsure at first if I’d have the time for it. It’s not the best or most interesting anime out there, but it has a nice atmosphere and some good moments so it’s not a waste of time either.

Day 53: My master has no tail
Type: Anime/Manga
Those damn Tanukis
Came in expecting a comedy show. But it was just wholesome.
It's a pretty good overall story. I'd probably enjoy it more if I knew more about Rakugo (or spoke fluently Japanese)
The ED is one of my favorites.
If you just want something with a good story, nothing spectacular, this one is for you.

finished uchi no shishou wa shippo ga nai and it was solidly okay (cute! fun!)
i always suspected i wouldn’t be able to give this series a fair shake, because it’s a cute little rakugo anime where the main character is a tanuki... so for me it’s going up against descending stories, which is of course the rakugo anime, and uchouten kazoku
descending stories and uchouten kazoku are two of my all-time favorites, so i never expected uchi no shishou to surpass them (and to its credit, it’s not trying to! it’s a very different show in genre and tone)
uchi ga shishou certainly didn’t get anywhere close to the level of those two series, but it was still cute and enjoyable!
bunko is very cool and mameda is adorable, i’m a total sucker for a dynamic like theirs, but at the same time i also didn’t get super attached to any of the main cast... bunchou and utaroku lore got me making the eyes emoji tho
predictably i picked this up mostly for the cast, because not only is it a rakugo anime it’s a rakugo anime with ishida akira performing rakugo which i will eat up literally any day (his performance as bon in descending stories is one of my favorites of his, of all time, which is saying a lot because he’s fucking kaworu)
i got chills when he started to perform, but his character doesn’t actually feature that heavily in this series and it just made me miss bon so so so much
in short, i’d say uchi no shishou is to rakugo what kabukibu! is to kabuki
it’s cute and it’s a serviceable enough introduction to the art of rakugo, but it’s a little bit all over the place and doesn’t make me lie in a puddle of my own tears for three months like a certain other rakugo show
#crab watches#uchi no shishou wa shippo ga nai#parting thoughts#god bunchou even LOOKED like sukeroku#this show was out to get my descending stories loving ass#not complaining about suwabe bc obviously i love him#but just imagine if they'd gotten yamadera to voice bunchou#to go along with ishida akira as utaroku#i would've started bawling despite the light-hearted nature of the show lmao
