How did you price your commissions, and do you have any reccomendations on how others could?

i price them based on how many hours it takes me to finish a piece!

i charge $10 per hour ^u^

as far as advice i think you need to decide on a few things for sure:1. how much of a profit you would like to make w your art?

- if you are drawing more as a hobby and would like to make some extra cash, but have no real big preference as far as profit goes then you could probably afford to make your prices quite cheap! its no secret that a lower price will sell faster, and if you have no qualm spending however many hours on smth you will only make $5 for then i say go for that! bc you’ll probably sell a bunch!

- however, if you would like to make art your actual job you need to think of it less like “extra cash” and more like “income”. even if you are not making the money you would like to be making doing art right now, you should still treat it like a job! fake it til you make it! if art were youre actual job what time would you wake up in the morning? how long would you draw for if this was an actual job?

you might say “but i have school all day!” or “but i have an actual job!” well to that i say…lots of people have two jobs! lots of people go to school and then to work! these people are tired! you will get tired! hard work is always tiring haha

if you would like to make an actual profit then this is what must be done. drawing everyday and treating it like a job will not only guarantee consistency (which is very important for people who follow artists) but also it will insure that you will improve! you cant draw all the time and stay stagnant, bc the more you draw the more you learn about drawing!

2. how much is your time worth to you?

- like i said above, i charge an hourly rate of $10 for my work. as far as professional artists go, especially traditional artists, this is quite cheap. its actually minimum wage haha

i charge this much mostly bc i know there is still a lot for me to learn, i am not an expert in many things that other artists my age (or younger!) have mastered already, and this is an unfortunate reality i have to live with right now u_u

it is good to be aware of where you stand in your artistic skill level, this will make your pricing more fair. not to be down on yourself, but to be aware there is still much to learn! imo this is a fair hourly rate for where i am in my skill level right now.

however other artists may charge a base price + hourly, like … $10 from the start and then $10 for every hour they work.

some artists charge based on a daily salary regardless of hours like, “i worked today so you owe me $200 for the days work”

you need to decide what works best for you! i recommend finding out what is the minimum wage wherever you live and then building off of that!

3. how big is your audience?

- as much as we may hate to acknowledge it, we wont sell very much if our following is small. i read something a long time ago (i wish i could remember where i read it but its been so long i cant even remember if it was on paper or online haha ;; ) but its held true for many years so i think it can help you realize where you stand as far as audience and possible commissioners

consider your following by 10%

meaning, if you have 100 followers, that means you are likely to have at least 10 people who would want to commission you.

if you have 1000 followers, your pool grows to a possibility 100 people, and so on

this also counts for comments, likes and reblogs!

this is not a guaranteed number ofc, more of a very likely theory haha

Okay. Here are my final thoughts on A Court of Mist and Fury, now that I have had 22 hours to digest it. Under a read more because I can’t be brief to save my life (which is the story of my life, sigh). Also, of course, ACOMAF SPOILERS AHEAD.

I have attempted some semblance of order, but my thoughts just kind of jump around, so this post will jump around, too.

In this post, I mentioned my sadness about Tamlin being SUCH A FUCKBOY after we spent the entirety of the first book growing to love him just as Feyre did. But OF COURSE I’M OVER THAT NOW. And, of course, I got over that sadness pretty quickly because it was clear from the moment Rhys started teaching Feyre to read that Rhys was the better man for her. A better man than Tamlin in general.

But, for me, what absolutely helped with the transition from Tamlin to Rhys was the fact that these relationships were NOT written as a love triangle. Feyre did not go to Rhys until Tamlin had broken her trust in him, until her safety and well-being could no longer be assured by him.

Early, early, early in ACOMAF, I was getting Edward/Bella/Jacob vibes, but this didn’t turn out to be an Edward/Bella/Jacob dynamic at all because Feyre was never forced to choose between Tamlin and Rhys. In fact, even when Rhys flirted with her, he told her, over and over again, that she could have anyone she wanted and he would not stop her. He never forced himself on her, never told her that he knew better than her, never tried to control her or guilt her. And that’s why I was able to latch onto Rhys the way I never could latch onto Jacob (Jacob was not the lesser of two evils to me - he was just as controlling, except I spent longer as a reader watching Bella fall in love with Edward, so that’s who I wanted her to be with).

Okay, ugh, never meant to bring Twi*light into this, but anyway.

My point is, I detest love triangles with every fiber of my being, and if ACOMAF had resulted in a love triangle, I would have spit venom and probably thrown my phone across the room. Of course Feyre felt guilty for being attracted to Rhys and moving on so quickly. I think it would be even more alarming if she didn’t feel a little guilty, a little sad, about leaving Tamlin after, you know, SHE DIED FOR HIM AND EVERYTHING. Everything that happened to her, everything that she became, was a result of her love for Tamlin. She lost her mortality, lost her family, lost her innocence, and then she lost Tamlin, too. The girl is allowed to grieve for all of those things, even as she’s falling for Rhys. But she NEVER agonized over a decision between the two, never considered Tamlin again after he locked her up, ignored her suffering, ignored her power and her strength and her hate for idleness. And Rhys always, always gave her what she needed, what Tamlin wouldn’t.

In ACOTAR, when Rhys told Feyre that he was at Calanmai for a reason, and he’d paid the price for that reason, my very first instinct was that someone he loved was going to be there, and that was the only place and the only chance he’d get to be with that person. So I was right about that haha!

And while I was reading, I was reminded so much of Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy. There were a lot of similarities, so I couldn’t help but compare them. Like the winged warriors (Illyrians in ACOTAR, Eyriens in BJT); the Court of Dreams in ACOTAR vs. Jaenelle being dreams made flesh in BJT; the way Tamlin treated Feyre (acting like she wasn’t well and didn’t know what she was saying when she sided with Rhys and then locking her up) vs. the way Jaenelle’s family treated her (acting like she wasn’t well, not understanding Jaenelle’s enormous power and not believing it existed and then locking her up); the powerful people that surround Feyre and Jaenelle, who just so happen to be made up of women, bastards, kindred - all people/beings that are hated or underestimated by other people in both series; the way both Rhys and Daemon Sadi created a mask to protect themselves and the people they love most, which make them feared and hated in their realms; and, not least of all, the game that Jaenelle/Daemon and Feyre/Rhys play in Queen of the Darkness/ACOMAF to save everyone they love.

The similarities are no bad thing at all. I mean, they’re both fantasy novels, so some crossover is to be expected. And the Black Jewels Trilogy is one of my very FAVORITE series of books, so I was very happy to read something new that is similar. One of my favorite things in the world to read is men lifting women up as powerful beings in their own right, and both of these series feature that heavily.

So I started blubbering when the King of Hybern began to break the bond between Rhys and Feyre. Like, ugly, lip-trembling blubbering, and then it started again when Rhys revealed that he’d only broken the bargain, not the bond. When Tamlin said he was going to have to “have a word” with Ianthe about selling out Feyre’s sisters, like, I wanted to slap him???????? The woman betrayed them and his first reaction isn’t to depose her or dispose of her, but to have a little chat with her about right and wrong or something?? I mean, I can’t really blame him because he’s a fuckboy and he sold out all of Prythian to Hybern, just for one woman, but, whatever, I’m still mad about it.

And Lucien! Like, I know he doesn’t know any better. He believes Rhys is an enemy because that’s what Rhys wants everyone to believe, and he owes everything to Tamlin, so while he can see how Feyre suffered with him, he also can’t turn his back on him. It still annoyed the crap out of me how he and Elain are mates, but if SJM can get me to fall in love with Rhys, after I hated him so much in ACOTAR, I’m going to trust that Lucien will also come around and that my feelings for him will change, too.

I am so so so glad that Mor got Elain and Nesta out, instead of letting them go to the Spring Court, and I cannot WAIT to see what Nesta will do, what kind of power she’ll have. I have a thing for Nesta/Cassian and I hope to see it happen. u_u

I think there was something else I wanted to touch on... but I’ve forgotten it. This is enough anyway. Everyone’s probably already had these reactions and made these posts months ago, but I’m always late to the game.
