A Mighty Fine Line
Here’s a westbound Rock Island freight train crossing over the diamonds at Joliet, Illinois. The train is clattering over both the Santa Fe as well as the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio here. The lead unit seen here is a General Electric U28B built for the road in 1966.

BN U28B 5456 by Chuck Zeiler Via Flickr: Burlington Northern Railroad U28B 5456 and GP50 3126 at Clyde, Illinois on December 20, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that the front windows are plated over, generally indicating that the railroad chose not to install bullet-resistant glass, as mandated by the FRA. The side windows, however, remain intact. From FRA Part 223: Except for yard locomotives and locomotives equipped as described in paragraphs (a) and (b), of this section, locomotives built or rebuilt prior to July 1, 1980, shall be equipped with certified glazing in all locomotive cab windows after June 30, 1984. Number 5456 was built by GE in December 1966 ( c/n 36117 ) as CB&Q 112, retired by the BN in August 1986.

A northbound train roars up the hill out of Bloomington, Indiana, on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon. The lead unit is a General Electric U28B built for the L&N in 1966.
The Hoosier Line was known for their semaphore signals, but this location had searchlights as long as I was around.

MILW 5511 Milwaukee Shops, JUN 13,1982 by Danial Via Flickr: Built for The Milwaukee Road in July 1966 as their 134, this General Electric U28B sits silent and out of service sixteen years later with no future. The 5511 has been back and forth across this great land many many times, leading time freights early in it's career to lugging freight over the mountains in Washington until it's retirement in May 1980 when the western end of The Milwaukee Road was embargoed. This photo was taken during an employee open house at The Milwaukee Road's shops in Milwaukee on June 13th, 1982.

Rock Island westbound freight passes U.D. tower and crosses ATSF/GM&O behind U25b, GP40, U28b, U28b, U33b (203....) Once he clears the diamonds (and the drawbridge over the DesPlaines River about a half mile ahead), this gaggle of power will probably put the 60mph speed limit in the shade.
