(so like, i have to say that one of the things that bugs me most about the Kissing Robot is that a big component of it is a rubik's cube.  Now, I am JUST ABOUT willing to give them the rubik's cube arriving on the scene early enough for Fiddleford to have it in GF in the early 80s. (It appeared in NYC in 1980, and maybe Fiddleford paid close attention to new toys; he did have a small child after all.)

But it should NOT have been in the possession of teen Ford in the 60s.  In our timeline it wasn

(darnit) wasn't invented until 1974 and really did not go international until the late 70s.  I can forgive some "oh the timeline is slightly different in the world of GF" stuff, but not this.  The rubik's cube is a defining toy of the early 80s.  It doesn't belong to the era of the mid-60s.

Ereg, I just gotta say - I love that your immediate point here about the kissing machine is that historically there was no way that kid shoulda had a rubik’s cube

And to be clear I’m 100% with you on that because that well over a decade’s difference.

Nooooooo. (although i would note that the idea of hair removal via fire actually does date back to ancient Greece. We have red-figure vases that depict women - I think they are supposed to be prostitutes, IIRC? - using lit lamps to remove their pubic hair. I mean. You are, and I have never been able to emphasize this enough ereg, an absolute delight as always. Every time I see you on my dashboard or similar I think as much. I wanted to say as much when I had a perfect opportunity to do so.

That’s actually really interesting, and frankly - it makes sense. It’s a difficult area to see what’s going on unlike your face or armpits and with fire you can blindly swipe without cutting yourself because all you have to do is keep that flame moving.

#gravity falls #meta #fiddleford mcgucket #YES #i *adore* Fiddleford and I adore contrasting him with Ford (and Stan) #but this is Mr. Shame Bot and I am really not sure we can entirely blame the memory gun for his penchant for creating giant death robots #for my money we do not see ENOUGH of Young Fiddleford who has some of that same energy as Old Man McGucket #(also - i realized it's only from the Journal but - he did create the memory gun *before* the nightmare realm incident #and he was entirely in his right mind when he was deciding to use it on the lumberjacks who helped them build the bunker #not to mention - on Ford) #(however i do acknowledge that this is from what i would call 'secondary canon' and i can understand if some folks #don't incorporate it as much into their understanding of him)

Something that bugs me is that while yes, between the two of them Fiddleford does have the most common sense, that's an absurdly low bar to clear when the person you're comparing him to is Stanford fucking Pines.

"Maybe we should stop building this doomsday device" should not have gotten the man who immediately after saying that went and started a cult and is also literally a scooby doo villain as many Reasonable Person points as it did.

So here is an interesting thought.  Manly Dan in the show does have a pretty extreme "dialed up to 11" personality (the yelling all the time, the quirky personality).  I wonder if, like so many other people in 2012 Gravity Falls, Manly Dan's current personality/demeanor has been affected by 30 years' worth of getting hit repeatedly with the memory gun?

(Since the clear implication in SOTBE was that the society's repeated use of it to "help" the townsfolk resulted in a lot of weird, permanently quirky behavior. As Bud says, even the members of the society have used it on themselves more times than they can remember.   And once you know that, Blubs and Durland being the way they are takes on a whole new meaning, given how often they would probably have run across supernatural stuff in their role as cops, and thus...

...how much MORE often they might have had the memory gun used on them than even the average citizen.)  So I wonder if the Boyish Dan whom Ford met when he arrived in GF in 1975 was less shouty all the time, and just generally a bit less like the man he'd become by 2012?  As a lumberjack out in the woods, it would make a lot of sense that he'd be someone who'd seen a lot of weird things and had the memory gun used on him a lot.

(Even in Journal 3, he knows about the supernatural -- like his haunted cabin -- and is scared of it.  So once the SOTBE was formed, maybe he actively wanted to take advantage of what they offered, at first.)

HOWEVER -- you are very much correct that it's *funnier* to imagine that Boyish Dan acted just like Manly Dan and imagine him trying to comfort paranoid Ford in a constant yell.

yEAH and I’d legit love to know about a less-shouty/Dialed-To-11 Dan

I know writing wise, the ‘Boyish’ on Dan’s name in j3 was basically just a word play joke off ‘Manly Dan’ because it was 30 years ago in his teens/early adulthood - but to me it always made me feel like his personality was different then too (but i couldn’t even say what)

maybe that’s me just REALLY wanting Dan to have more a past/character development, but yeah!! Yeah, I completely see Manly Dan as we know him now CAME to the way he is now, and used to actually be calmer (and... less focused on feats of strength?)

Hell - looking back at the one image we got of him (that I remember at least) - he could be 19 or so, and- and that just opens up an interesting slew of things because if he is a young adult and he owned that haunted cabin that’s been in his family, does that mean everyone older than him is gone or out of the picture? Did someone kind of just bestow it upon him as a sort of family duty or even without telling him about the dangers until he went there once himself? Plus, just phrasing in j3 makes it seem like he was the sole person to build Ford’s home - so is he an independent contractor? Is he in some sort of employment through Northwest Realty? 

AND while I usually don’t like the memory gun being pointed to as why someone in town is weird (because I’ve seen the opinion that ALL the weird people in town are that way solely bc of the memory gun and that really takes away from the characters for me and strips the charm away of a community of weird people) - Manly Dan is a character I would be interested in seeing that as a thing because as one of the younger characters in 1982, if he were getting memory-gun’ed up it’d also explain why he’s the way he is now 

and jlasDFK the angst of a dialed-back Dan awkwardly trying to comfort Ford vs the pure comedy of normal Dan in his constant yell asking what’s wrong and going 'THERE THERE’

including Boyish Dan into a 1982 era fic with paranoid Ford, in theory, sounds so good.

Ford reaching out to a neighbor that aside from Fiddleford is the most he knows anyone in town and it's still more an acquaintance sort of relationship than anything real friendly

But I have such a hard time envisioning Manly Dan talking anyway other than the yelling he does

I always kinda wished I could do more with him (especially as Boyish Dan), but the only personality I can glean off is 'yelling' which isn't even a character trait

(Dan trying to comfort paranoid Ford while still yelling is a funny image tho).

Honestly, almost-same. I mean, i do reblog quite a bit of cute ship stuff (of multiple varieties), because i find it cute. i've produced a (very little) bit of it (most of my stuff is gen tho'). but i equally like non-shipping content, and always will. I say "almost" same because for me, ship stuff never bothers me. but what i'm in the mood for on any given day or at any given moment varies. it's highly mood-dependent.

I get whatcha mean - like because again, there are some days where I do enjoy a cute ship to a mild degree.

Personally, I’m just someone that is farther away from the ship stuff as a whole. Not that I never indulge. It’s just something that has to hit me in the mood and/or in general just be really great content.

If it makes you feel any better - and you KNOW how much I love Ford as well! - I suspect that language/arts would have been his weakest subject. Even his folklore/mythology and anthro/fieldwork interests are more social-science, and except for works of folklore I doubt he's that interested in literature. (Even though he himself has storytelling interests, esp via DD&MD.)

I don't super recall evidence of him being interested in either literature or art history / contemporary art? (Do correct me if I'm forgetting something!) I think the closest he would come would be an interest in scifi/fantasy; but those have a sometimes rocky relationship with academic literary focus anyway.

I can’t believe you came into my day to make my day a dozen times better by essentially going “actually language arts would probably be one of Ford’s weakest subjects and here’s my backed up reasoning to prove it” thus leading to the logical conclusion that if I did meet him I’d best him in it

I love Stanford Pines, but as someone who was beaten in academic team by a rival who EXCELLED in 3/5 subjects, absolutely dominating the fields when people only have 1 subject (rarely 2), and my experiences going up against them-

I would also unspokenly swear vengeance on Stanford Pines if I met him at college and we were in even the slightest competitive set up, and I know that with every fiber of my being to be true

A few majors, okay, heck four even, but twelve???? TweLVE?!?!?
