Nothing nsfw, but how would Papa III be with a shy&adorable (but becomes more open and goofy after knowing someone better) type of female s/o? I know papa wouldn’t mind someone outgoing, but I’ve always felt that he would have a soft spot for the shy introverts and actually be drawn to them as well.

He would absolutely turn into that dumbass boy on the playground hanging upside down by his legs from the monkey bars to get his crush to notice him. And of course said crush WOULDN’T EVEN BE LOOKING AT HIM.

He’d noticed you around the Abbey—he knows all the attractive Siblings, but what made him really see you was watching you carry on with your friends. You were so reserved and stoic during mass, keeping your head down as you walked down the hallways—but put you in a group of your crew and suddenly you’d have this … spark.

At first it wasn’t even an effort to get into your habit—he’d just wanted to be the one to crack that layer of frost you radiate. He went about it all wrong, of course—he’s used to seducing Siblings who want to play and those who realize what he’s doing. You were just confused when he shored up with you as you had walked down another long hall in the Abbey. He’d waited for you to say something, but you’d just kept waiting for him to pass you.

“Come here often?” he’d tried finally.

Your head had snapped to him before you’d quickly lowered your eyes from his mismatched gaze.

“Um, me?” you’d squeaked.

The hall was practically empty.

“No, the Unholy Ghost.”

You’d wondered if you were that invisible that he’d never noticed you before.

“I mean, I live here? Your Unholiness,” you added.

His ghast had been so flabbered that he’d actually walked into a pillar. You’d felt such fremdschämen that you’d hurried on, hoping any ire he felt wouldn’t be transferred onto you.

Two days later he’d come out of nowhere to sit next to you in the quad—straddling the stone bench—making the Siblings around you immediately going quiet.

“Did it hurt when you fell?” he’d quipped.

You’d squinted at him, flustered and confused. “But … you’re the one that walked into that pillar?” 

You hadn’t even meant to be funny, but your friends had covered their mouths to stifle their laughter as Papa III gaped at you.

“I … um … I,” he’d stammered, his hand going to the unsubtle egg on his head. “Rude.”

You face had flushed, and you’d managed to squeak out an apology before making a hasty exit. Thoroughly embarrassed, you’d skipped mass the next day, only to be informed that he’d asked after you.

“I think he likes you,” one friend had said.

“Likes me? He only just noticed me 2 days ago.”

“—sitting in a tree,” another had singsonged. “F-U-C-K-I-N-G!”

“Shut your face!” you’d shrieked, shoving them in the face to shut them up.

None of you noticed Papa III out of his vestments looking on plaintively.

A few days later, the group of you had been joking around in the mess hall as you ate your lunches when all of a sudden the lights dimmed. Papa III was suddenly illuminated in the corner by a Ghoul with a flashlight. Another Ghoul had pressed play on a boombox he then held up. The opening riffs of “Cirice” had echoed in the mess hall.

The Siblings in the cafeteria had broken into an excited titter.

On cue, Papa III had held up an echo mic and had begun to sing in it.

He had strutted up and down the aisles, occasionally letting his unoccupied hand trail through a row of Siblings’ outstretched hands. When the chorus broke, he had jumped up on a table and pointed around the hall, as everyone had screamed wildly.

He’d jumped down to continue prowling around as he crooned into the toy. Once he’d started stalking the aisle as he crooned Can’t you see that you’re lost without me, the whole crowd thrummed with the anticipation on who’d be the recipient of Papa’s singular attention.

When he’d bent on a knee and thrust his hand in your direction, you’d done the only sensible thing and pushed your friend forward—this moment was all she ever goddamned talked about, and there was no way you wanted to be the focus of the entire congregation. There’d been a flicker of exasperation on his face, but quickly enough he was putting his heart into Ciricing the shit out of your friend.

After that, Papa had sauntered away to misuse another table top, and your friend had leaned over and said, “That was amazing, but you’re the dumbest bitch I’ve ever met.” (You found out much later that after that performance Papa III had been in such a sulk that one of his Ghouls had bitched at him to just be direct with you.) 

For days after that, he’d seemed to be glaring at you every time you caught his eyes. It had put you on edge enough that when he’d showed up at your room, you were sure you were about to be upbraided—perhaps even … kicked out of the Church? But he’d just sighed and smoothed his hair out of he face, his posture stiff.

“Would you like to have dinner with me?”

“Dinner?” you’d echoed.

“Yes, dinner. It’s a meal. You eat during it,” he mimed forking food into his mouth, “and sometimes there’s even conversation.” He opened and closed his hand a few times.

“Now?”

He’d blinked at you.

“It’s 2 o’clock.”

“I dunno. Don’t older people call ‘lunch’ ‘dinner’?”

His eyes had widened, and he’d mimed getting shot in the heart before stumbling backward

“Old people,” he’d sputtered. “Which old people?!”

“My grandma, I guess.”

“And how old is dear grandmama?!”

“Oh, um. Pushing 90?”

“Pushing 90—” He’d leaned forward, hands on hips. “You think Papa is pushing 90, do you?” 

“I, uh—”

“I am very youthful. Vibrant, even.”

“Er …”

He’d straightened his posture, lifting his chin.

“Dinner is at 6 sharp.”

He’d then turned on his heel and marched away.

You’d had the freakouts to end all freakouts then, and your roommate had come home to find you tearing through your closet.

“What’s your major malefaction?!”

“Papa invited me to dinner and ALL THESE HABITS ARE A LITTLE DIFFERENT!”

She’d shaken you by the shoulders. “ALL YOUR HABITS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME, AND WHY WOULD YOU WEAR A HABIT?!” Then she’d picked up your one formal dress from the pile and held it out. “For Lucifer’s sake, wear this!”

“It’s not a date!”

“OF COURSE IT’S A DATE, YOU COW—OMG.”

A Ghoul had shown up at 5 til to escort you. He’d given you a blatant once over, smirking, and you’d flushed. Your roommate had given you a shove and closed the door behind you. You’d been expecting to be led to Papa III’s private quarters, but instead the Ghoul took you to one of the balconies on the second floor.

There had been a table for two set up—one long candle on the table, and a myriad tealights across the balcony railing. Papa had been staring off into the quad, hands locked behind his back above his coattails.

“Your Unholiness,” hissed the Ghoul, and Papa III had turned. “Have fun with your … meal.” He’d given you another lascivious glance.

Papa III had hissed back and shooed him away. “Away with you foul beast.”

The Ghoul had only cackled as he’d slunk away. 

Papa hurried to pull out your chair. “Don’t mind him, he’s still feral—makes him excellent on guitar.”

Once the two of you were seated and Papa had removed the dish covers to reveal a dinner of PB&J’s with the grucifix stamped into them (“I made them myself”) you’d asked him why he’d invited you to dinner.

He’d taken your hand. “I like the cut of your jib.

“Uh …”

“I’d like to know you better. We talk and accomplish this, yes?”

The two of you had ended up talking all night, way after the tealights had burned out. Turned out, once Papa III got you away from big crowds, you were more open to participating in conversation. He’d used his charm and charisma to keep the conversation going—asking you questions about yourself when you’d flounder and cracking jokes to set your nerves at ease.

He’d walked you back to your room that early morning night, merely kissing your hand before taking his leave. But after that the two of you had many more nights of pleasant conversation, and soon enough you’d felt comfortable enough to joke with and tease him like you did your friends.

The real test came when Papa had joined you in the mess hall and he’d made a crack about you being Fort Knox. You’d responded by scooping the frosting off your cupcake and smashing it on his face. It had seemed like the whole hall had held its breath waiting for a Ghoul to drag you off—but he’d just burst out laughing, wiping the frosting off his face and trying to smear on your arm. He’d gotten it in your friend’s hair instead, which is when he’d said Oops and jumped up on the table yelling, “FOOD FIGHT!”

When Sister Imperator burst in demanding to know What the hell, Papa III had pointed at a Ghoul as all the Ghouls pointed at him.

“Seester! What’s that over there?” He’d pointed over her shoulder. She didn’t even flinch to look, but he’d just grabbed your hand and said, “Let’s make a break for it while she’s distracted.”

The two of you had run laughing out of the mess, through the echoing halls, and into a deep alcove. It was there—as he had threaded his fingers through your hair to get the peas out of it and you’d tried to clean the rest of the frosting off his nose—that the two of you had kissed for the first time.

He’s been quite enamored with you since. He’s learned his lesson about making you the focus in a crowd, but in private or amongst your friends, he feels free to turn his full wattage on you. He’s recognized your boundaries and your limits, fully understanding that just because you’ll make goofy monster voices with him in private doesn’t mean you’re comfortable doing so with the eyes of the congregation on you. (Well he doesn’t quite understand why you wouldn’t want to be everyone’s focus, but he respects that you feel that way.)

It’s been a real learning experience for him, but he’s found that he quite likes it—he never has to fight you to be the centre of attention in a battle of personalities and he gets a piece of you very few people get to see (it makes him feel special to have your trust like that).

Unfortunately, as one of his paramours, your days of being an anonymous Sibling are over, but Papa III tries his best to keep you under the radar. It totally goes against his instinct to flaunt you off for everyone to see, but—then again—it creates even more mystery, doesn’t it? (And he’s never been one to shy away from being dramatic.)

its so interesting to hear ur take on this bc the prime directive is probably one of the most interesting parts of star trek to me! maybe its just the IR major in me... i think they do get it wrong Often but ive always seen the point of the prime directive to specifically avoid cultral imperalism, from a spivak 'does the sublatern speak' kind of way

i think the problem that they cant actually encapsulate that mindset bc the idea of supra-nation human federation is already inherently defaulting to a very western structure of governance, and its treated as the default for all humans which u can argue is colonial to begin with

but i do See the intent......there is actually a TNGepissode where they respect assisted suicide!!! so it doess depend on whos writing

they also do attempt to tackle the question of aid (bc im pretty sure they often treat it seperate from the PD) theres tng episode where they offer 'neutral' aid to a planet only to find later the aid wasnt being distributed properly and they were actively helping one side of the conflict

tldr: i do agree with you tho!!! just some further food for thought jkdhfdkjf i do think star treks biggest failing is not realizing when its doing cultrual hegemony

3. i DO think the prime directive is interesting but to me it’s interesting in like... a doylist way of like... how did this writer approach this? in this situation how did these characters interpret the prime directive?

bc trek, like main continuity comics, is difficult to engage with unless you make peace with just letting go of consistency because your favorite character who you know very well and love very much is going to act wildly out of pocket all the time because some dumb asshole is writing them and their actor didn’t get a choice in the matter (i KEEP hearing about how ds9 cast influenced their own character arcs esp siddig, brooks, and visitor!!! i wish shimerman and rene (i can’t spell his last name off the top of my head i am so sorry sir) had the same say in their arcs bc we would’ve gotten quodo marriage like day one)

4. i DO think that the main struggle here is exactly what you said about writers just not being able to encapsulate that perspective. it’s very like... when the writers will say something like “this is a species so completely different from us in every way! they’re totally alien they are nothing like us at all!!” and then if any character from that species sticks around for any length of time at all they become just... so human. this happens SO MUCH with the dominion like why the hell do the founders, vorta, and the jem h’dar just end up with human values and perspectives on everything no matter how much they look at the camera and say “i do not understand your human perspective”

sometimes tho the writers challenge their own human-centric perspective tho! in that s2 episode where sisko and quark get stuck somewhere quark confronts him about being prejudiced against ferengis and sisko’s like “no quark i just don’t like YOU” and quark goes “okay, that’s fine, but are there any ferengi you DO like?!” and sisko kind of backs off on that

he EVEN many seasons down the line, defends nog when he and jake have a disagreement. sisko tells jake that he and nog have to work this out, and jake says “but you didn’t even want me to be friends with him! you said that humans and ferengi can never be friends” and sisko says “i did say that, and i was wrong” because his whole perspective on The Ferengi and also the three ferengi he knows personally has changed

but that kind of change of perspective is super rare!!! it’s very much like the writers can’t get out of their own humanity/the audience’s expected human perspective

Aerith: I mean, canon shows that Aerith can be great with kids, which is something I appreciate the remake for showing. While she struggles with connecting with others, you see the sense of empathy inherent in being a Cetra through her interactions with Marlene, and it adds a nice layer to this otherwise standoffish and emotionally distant woman. That said... That isn’t necessarily maternal? She has no aspirations in that direction, at any rate. Her own childhood spat out someone who bucks at the idea of introducing a child to the world she’s been dragged through. She might settle for being the cool aunt for the children of loved ones, but refuses to have a child of her own or bring up one.

Aqua: She kind of already is? Like I think there’s a very real sense of her being very motherly and mature in spite of her youth, especially in her interactions with Ven and other youngsters in the narrative. She makes a good mother figure to them, even for all her personal flaws. In spite of that, she still has a lot of issues to work through, so while I think she would like to have a family of her own someday, it’s a long ways off and unlikely to happen before she has a handle on her own problems. She doesn’t want to be the kind of parent her own children have to heal from, like her own father figure was to her, however accidentally. 

Stray: There’s potential there to be a good mom, as she’s already largely taken that role for others in the past. However, that skill was largely born from age-inappropriate parentification, and stands in stark contrast to several of Stray’s other desires and goals. As a result, she’s largely ambivalent to the thought of motherhood, lacking both a partner and a clear future to consider the possibility with. She’s pretty young at the start of the narrative, and has plenty of time in the years to come to decide whether it’s something she’d be interested in pursuing with whoever she might marry. 

Braska: By all accounts, he was a great father. He stood loyally by Yuna  for her early childhood, encouraged her, did his best to make things safe and loving for his child who was going to face so much in life. I truly believe he was a wonderful father in contrast to Jecht -- but he was an imperfect man. He was willing to sacrifice it all to leave a legacy Yuna could be proud of, in the hopes she might live free of the fear and sorrow they had both faced in the wake of her mother’s death. The problem is, he dreamt up a solution that left Yuna lonelier than before. You can read his sacrifice a lot of ways, but it’s effect on his daughter was clear. He was a wonderful father, but he failed where it counted in some regards. 

Crowe: Like Aerith, Crowe would be most comfortable in the role of ‘cool aunt’ over being a mom. There is no love lost between Crowe and kids, who she largely regards as loud and annoying in the majority and halfway tolerable in the rare case one doesn’t earn her ire. She’s definitely down to be the badass rebellious honorary aunt to any children her friends might have, but without being really responsible for them or a good role model. Honestly Kleffy and I have a verse where she’s godmother to a tiny Galahdian namesake and it goes... Poorly. Big Crowe is the voice of impulse that Little Crowe is trying very hard to ignore. 

Eraqus: Just hit me with the hard ball questions, damn. So to preface this, I understand fandom has some STRONG opinions on Eraqus as a parent, and I disagree with both camps. He wasn’t some verbally or emotionally abusive pillar of stone who intentionally set his students up for failure. He also wasn’t some angelic and always right patriarch who did no wrong until Xehanort meddled in their little Paradise. I think he did his best, but was ignorant and had a lot of pride that put him at odds with what his students needed or were, but he tried to love them regardless. What we see in BBS is a worst case scenario in terms of his direct actions past a certain point, and while these do show his deep zealotry for light, I think it’s not totally fair to hold them up as what he was as a parent in general. His flaws lie more in how he put down darkness to Terra’s detriment, how he so coddled Ventus in spite of his want for a life like his friends had, and basically setting up Aqua to follow his path and past mistakes, not in a clearly difficult decision he made thinking the world would literally end otherwise. He was wrong to do what he wanted to do to Ven, but I think his problems as a parent aren’t reflected in that. I have a whole meta about this on my old blog I’ll have to rb because my feelings on Eraqus as a father are really long and complicated having mused both he and one of his kids.

Invi: Invi will be the first to admit she’s got no particular skill with children. She’s a stern leader and demands the best from her union, and shows some deeper understanding of how to communicate with the youths in Anguis, but without the soft moments that can make such a relationship meaningful or deeper. Even with her younger siblings, she tends to push them a little too far, and is downright competitive with them when it comes to having the Master’s time or attention. She lacks the patience or understanding for good parenting, and lacks any interest in being a mother. The most she might aim for is to take on a student of her own someday, but it’d be just that: a teacher and student relationship.

Isa: No. Isa does not delude himself about fatherhood. He has spent too long grappling with the emotional and mental scars his own angry father left behind to even consider becoming that to a child. He knows his temperament and track record do not paint an optimistic picture, or even a halfway decent one. He has no inclination towards the idea, and in fact balks at it. His history with Roxas and Xion alone show he is awful with children. Even allowing for changes as a Somebody, it just means he gains the self-awareness to look back on his actions and his own youth and say the cycle stops with him in totality.

Kokoro: I mean, the kid she’s helped raise the last ten years isn’t complaining. Despite occasional friction that comes with adolescence, Mads clearly adores her adoptive mom, and never really gripes about her as a mother, just a cryptic seeker of knowledge. Kokoro herself understands she can make a lot of mistakes in her life, but parenting cannot be one of them -- Not like her father made mistakes with her. While she’s struggled at times in suddenly being responsible for a complete stranger, Kokoro has overall enjoyed the experience of motherhood. I’d say of my lady muses, she is the most prepared for it, and would ultimately enjoy having more children in the future, whether by adoption as with Mads or trying for biochildren with a partner.

Roxas: He is a child. That said, in at least one far future setting my friends and I have, he’s a good Master to his students but clearly disinterested in being an actual dad. He can hardly handle himself some days, why would he ever want to be in charge of another living creature on top of that?

Steria: She has all the skills to be a good mom and the personality to be a really fun, reasonable kind of parent. Steria never really thought about these things when younger, despite expectations put upon her by certain arrangements in her life, but as she grew to adulthood... She was really excited to start a family of her own and give her kids all the time and love that was so touch and go in her own upbringing. When her daughter was born, she had every intention of giving her the world. The fact she never got to be the loving mother and shelter for Kokoro growing up is one of the cruelest parts of her death.

Drautos: This is... a many layered answer. I think he would be a good parent in that he would prepare any child for the world and teach them how to be a better person than he himself is. He would provide stability, comfort, and safety for a child. But when you look at his track record with his subordinates and his ultimate aims, it all falls apart. I could easily see him being a distant but exacting father who makes up for in opportunities what he lacks in warmth. It would be a mess. Thank God this man has no intention of raising children in a bubble like Lucis.

Chatelaine Bank continued to be a raw, obnoxious thorn in his side. 

It bothered him. His shareholders were nervous, sure, but she didn’t have the staying power. Not yet. Soon, though, soon, he knew she would be a major competitor. His only consolation was that U-T Bank was struggling with the new interloper as well. 

“I think you need a vacation,” Hideyoshi suggested one morning. “You’re stressing a lot about this. I’m certain it’ll go away soon.”

“I doubt it. It would have already. I think we’ll be seeing that... that Princess a little more.” Nobunaga sipped his Italian coffee. “But the Innovator’s Conference is coming up soon, and that will be vacation enough.”

Out of all the meetings he attended, that one was at least a little exciting. Every year, banking executives and business professionals descended on a coastal city, reserving an entire hotel to themselves and engaging in lectures, panel discussions, and networking. He’d run quite a few panel discussions and Q&A Sessions in the past, so this was no stranger to him. At least a bit of time being in control of his own environment would be nice. 

“Do you know who else will be on the panel?”

“Not yet.” He tapped his computer on, scanning his email with a glance of carnelian eyes. “I’m sure they’ll let me know soon. I think Shingen will be on it, as usual, but he’s the devil I know, at least. They haven’t sent the rooming arrangements, either. Hopefully they won’t think to partner me with anyone from U-T.”

Hideyoshi snorted. “Hopefully everyone is wiser than that.”

He still hadn’t received a list of the others on the panel when he arrived to check in at the Isadora Hotel and Convention Center. Waiting patiently by the beleaguered reception desk, Nobunaga checked his email for the millionth time on his smart phone, but apparently the service wasn’t great. 

“Knew I shouldn’t have switched providers,” he muttered, and pocketed it.

“Mister Oda?”

He looked up with a smile. One of the convention officials smiled back at him, extending a hand. “Dean Parker. I’m organizing the rooming for the Innovator’s Conference.”

“Excellent to meet you.”

“We’ve had a bit of a rooming shuffle, so I’m sorry that you weren’t notified in advance.” He flipped through the pages he held, making marks. “You’re in penthouse suite 1905, top floor.”

“Good.” He took the offered key and tucked it into his pocket, rolling his suitcase away before even discovering his roommate. There would be time for that later, no doubt. Punching the button for the nineteenth floor, he contemplated all the work he needed to do, where he might get his coffee, how much time he would spend on the beach.... ding. The doors parted. His suite was in a corner, just where he liked it. He jimmied the key into a lock and swung it open, checking around.

Apparently, his roommate was already there. A black suitcase perched in front of a shut door. Well, that was fine. He wanted the other room anyway. Shutting the door behind him, he crossed into a spacious personal bedroom, a king bed with lovely sheets laid out for him, and settled his things down before heading into the main living area for some coffee. 

The door to the other room opened as he bustled around the sink. 

“Hello?” A woman’s voice. Well, that wasn’t unheard of for the IC. He’d specified on his sheet that he was fine with coed arrangements. Everyone could be professional. But why in the devil was that voice familiar?

“By the coffee,” he answered smoothly, dumping a bag into the machine and starting it.

The patter of soft footsteps, and she came into view. 

“Hell,” the director of Chatelaine Bank muttered. 

“Ah.” Nobunaga stared at her, and she back, both wordless and uncertain. The coffee pot bubbled by his shoulder, entirely forgotten. 

“There has to be a mistake.” She laughed bitterly.

“I’d agree,” he answered. 

“That--this--well.”

“Awkward,” he responded. 

“Very.”

The pot finished brewing. He turned from her and busied himself pouring a cup, silence falling between the two of them. 

“So...” She paused. “Does one of us move out?”

“I quite like this room.” He sipped the coffee and stared at her levelly. “So I’m not going anywhere. If you so wish to move your things for the sake of your feelings, then you’re welcome to. I can be professional.”

Her mouth settled into a hard, fine line. “I doubt that. Besides, I was offering as much for your bruised ego as anything else.”

“Bruised?” He sputtered a laugh. “Bruised ego?”

“Is that not what they call that at Azuchi Bank? Because where I am, storming out after being refused generally points to a bruised ego.”

“Look, princess, when one sees that they’re simply standing in a position to be abused further, then one removes themselves from it.”

She pointed at the door. “You could remove yourself from it now.”

“So you admit you’re trying to abuse me?”

“You’re just as insufferable as I imagined you’d be.”

Nobunaga grinned at the victory and took another sip of entirely-too-hot coffee, if only to further his attitude. “I’m so pleased to hear you spent your precious imagination on me. Dare I ask on what?”

Her face splotched purple with embarrassment and anger. Turning on her heel, she headed into her room and slammed the door. Well now. He poured the coffee out in the sink, finding it not to his taste. Princess: 1, Him: 1. Who would set the next point?

After that disgusting shock, he wasn’t too stunned to find that she was going to speak on the same panel as him. On Customer Innovations, of all things. He huffed a laugh and printed his notes, running a hand down his suit one last time. 

The door to her room swung open again. 

She looked... he glanced at her, turning away, but he didn’t have to stare too long to know she looked excellent. Her hair draped over one shoulder, a flattering, new black suit hugging her curves. She wore no makeup, just some reader glasses perched on her head, but she didn’t need any makeup anyway. Her features were just fine the way they were. 

“It’s in Ballroom C,” he announced, not looking up.

“I know.” 

He thought about snapping back, but she hadn’t said it with as much edge as their prior conversation, so he bothered with his far more interesting stapler instead. She slipped on a pair of heels by the door and waited. 

“Yes?” He asked. 

“I’m waiting for you.”

“And why, pray tell?”

“Because,” she sighed heavily at him, “regardless of personal friction, if we’re going to be presenting on the same panel, we should at least keep up the illusion of professional unity.”

Nobunaga chuckled, but she wasn’t wrong. Not in the strictest sense, at least. He tugged his jacket over his shoulders and motioned toward the door. “After you, then.”

“You’re not gonna put your arms in the sleeves?” She looked amused. 

“No. It’s part of my personal brand. Are you going to lecture me on that, as well?”

“Heaven forbid I ask you about your personal brand. I think I’m quite alright letting that be.”

What a mouthy woman. He rolled his eyes behind her back as she swung open the door, and they slipped into the elevator together, followed shortly by--

“Shingen,” Nobunaga greeted him icily. 

“Nobunaga.” But then the tall man’s eyes roved to the Princess, and he grinned. “Miss Director, how are you today?”

“I’m well.” Her voice was clipped, if not more so than before. Nobunaga almost wanted to laugh. At least her ire wasn’t targeted exclusively at him. Maybe he could even enjoy her sharpness, so long as it was directed at Shingen. “And yourself?”

“Better, now that I’m feasting my eyes on a goddess.” 

 “I told you before,” she sighed, flipping through her notes disinterestedly, “that if you’re going to try and charm me, you have to be charming first.”

He couldn’t help himself. Nobunaga barked a laugh and stifled it, pretending he’d merely coughed into his collar. The Princess clamped her mouth shut between her teeth, clearly fighting back her own smile. 

“You wound me.” Shingen was unflappable as always. “I suppose I’ll have to try harder.”

“I really wish you wouldn’t.”

They reached the ground floor and slid out as a trio, heading to the ballroom. Oh--this promised to be an interesting panel, at least.

The questions were engaging. Nobunaga had to think about a few of them and was pleased to see that he wasn’t the only one. On a stage together, they worked as a cohesive unit, deferring politely to each other, attaching agreements to points, dissenting with grace. 

They were on the topic of overdraft fees when the turning point arrived. 

“We’re looking into doing a delayed payment option for those,” Shingen stated. “Some people simply can’t pay up front for overdraft fees. I don’t see a point in making the customer immediately dip into their next paycheck for it. We are considering a delay of two to three payment cycles before we request the reimbursement.”

The Princess leaned into her microphone, and Nobunaga caught the glint of the same steely edge that he’d been on the receiving end of. “We do not levy overdraft fees at Chatelaine Bank.”

A slight buzz. Someone raised a hand. “Why not?”

“Because,” she stated, her voice clear and firm, “that is the ultimate form of punishment for customers. We don’t believe in punishing our customers. We simply provide hard overdraft limits and adhere to them.”

“I think most customers need a deterrent to prevent them from doing that consistently,” Shingen added. She cut him off just as quickly. 

“They do not. I think you’ll find that customers know and understand when their finances are tight. They don’t need a professional reminder, much less a fine for being poor.” She frowned at him. “Overdraft fees, by their very nature, disproportionately punish impoverished customers. The lifeblood of a bank should not rely on levying punishment on those in need.”

Nobunaga fell silent, rolling her words through his mind. As if reading his thoughts, she turned to him, her eyes ablaze and entirely willing to fight him. “Do you have anything to add?”

“No,” he announced, genuine for once. “I find I agree with you.”

Surprise flickered in those bright eyes. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me,” he replied, respect surfacing for the first time. “You’re the one with the idea.”

Contrary to what his best friend and roommate says, Xu Minghao insists that he’s a decent person.

But honest, Minghao is a simple college boy.

He came to Pledis University when he was 18 as an international student, double majoring in Visual Arts, and Korean Language and Culture.

He’s there mostly on scholarship but he also has financial support from his parents, so he’s never really had to worry about his economic status.

He’s not the most social of kids but he’s also not the most introverted, so he always has just enough friends and just enough parties to attend as to not get bored.

But he gets bored anyway, because he’s always been an active child itching to do more.

So really, this whole mess started when he decides that he should pick up his old hobby:

Breakdancing

It’s mostly just a passing thought that comes to him when he comes back home for holiday and rewatches a VHR tape of an old b-boying competition.

But it lingers and every once in awhile he considers the possibility of him just quitting school and becoming a b-boy star like he once dreamed of.

After all, he was pretty damn good.

(He accidentally thinks this out loud during dinner and his mother throws her chopsticks at him)

Anyway, he returns to college for the new year and he’s almost completely forgotten about his old dreams.

Luckily enough (or maybe unluckily enough, depending on the perspective), there is a campus b-boy squad that he happens to stumble upon during his second-year clubs fair (as in, they barrelled into him with a flier and bombarded him with questions).

To be truthful, it seems pretty lame and Minghao’s sure that if he went underground, he could probably find a cooler scene,,,

But also, they said that there would be snacks at the interest meeting,,,

And so he makes the considerate decision to attend.

The interest meeting is where he meets Seokmin of all people.

The acting major makes a scene when he announces that he’s not there as Lee Seokmin but as Kang Hajoon, a lower-class high school drop out who finds his way through the power of breakdance.

(“Nobody knew who you were in the first place, dipshit–“

“–I said to call me Hajoon–“

“–Just sit down.”)

And people are snickering at Seokmin because they find his method acting lame.

But Minghao finds that lame so he proceeds to sit down right beside the boy and stare daggers at any jerk who directs a snide comment their way.

He hangs around just long enough so that he can decimate the rest in a b-boy demonstration, pretty much showing them all what they’re going to miss out on.

And then he gets up and leaves the meeting, Seokmin following behind him.

They grab some chips on their way out and properly introduce themselves.

“Hey sorry about all of that in there, Seo- uh, Hajoon. B-boyers usually aren’t assholes… Just them. Don’t let that bleed into your portrayal, you feel? I’m Minghao, by the way. Nice to meet you.”

“Don’t worry, I’m over it. Thanks for what you did back there... It’s nice to meet you too. And you can call me Seokmin now, I’m done with Hajoon for the day.”

Which starts an odd, but well-oiled friendship.

Seokmin introduces Minghao to all of his friends, and that’s how Minghao ends up with an incredibly,, diverse,, friend group.

And by diverse, he means that he’s positive his friendship with them will likely result with him going to jail.

He should’ve realized it when the de facto leader Seungcheol introduced himself as “S.Coups” and made him sign a waiver of liability before joining the group.

It was scribbled on to the back of a receipt but yeah, it should’ve been a little concerning

But Minghao just kinda rolls with it.

And this is how he finds himself inducted into their so-called “League of Good Doers Doing Not So Good Doer Things”.

It’s a working title; LoGDDNSGDT for short.

(“What do you do, Seokmin?”

“I’m a recruiter!”

“… That’s fair.”)

It takes him a few months to solidify his role in the group (he’s the last to join), but in that time he manages to become especially good friends with Mingyu, so much so that he becomes his roommate.

Mingyu’s known for using his technical abilities to bootleg high quality concert footage, videos, textbooks, and whatever else you need.

(“We’re all just a bunch of broke college students with a bunch of broke college student needs. We’re just making those needs realities.”)

Also alcohol, he sells a lot of alcohol.

And though Minghao initially scoffs at this, it also makes him check his privilege a little

He’s always been fortunate enough to grow up with money and be smart, free to do whatever he wants when he wants.

Growing up, he’s had a lot of interests and a lot of phases, all of which he more than excelled in.

Gosh, there was even that one ninja phase…

THE NINJA PHASE

He’s eating a brownie that’s probably been laced with weed one Friday night as he watches tv with Mingyu and Seokmin when he remembers the ninja phase.

He remembers how stealthy he is and just how good he is at picking locks.

And so he decides to Robin Hood the frick outta his life, robbing the expensive belongings from the richer students and pawning their items off so he can donate to the poor.

He excels at this too, much to Mingyu’s chagrin (“the kid’s just fuckin’ good at everything!”)

It definitely alleviates him of his boredom, and he’s so subtle and precise with it that most of the time, people don’t even notice when things are missing.

He’s become some kind of town legend, and so many people idolize this mysterious robber that the authorities aren’t even too concerned.

He’s also somehow acquired this odd nickname?? The8?? They say it’s because you never know how his crimes begin or how they’ll end.

Like the only thing anybody knows about his victims is that they’ll be wealthy (but gosh, Pledis U has too many of those roaming the place),,,, but then next thing you know the underfunded art department will suddenly get a donation of a few thousand, or the Culture Club food drive will find a gazillion non-perishable cans when they come back the next morning.

Minghao likes to think he's spontaneous.

Now this is where you come in (“finally,” I can hear you sigh from behind your screens)

Unlike everyone else around you, you do not have the biggest crush on this mysterious figure.

(“Just for the record, ‘The8’ is literally the dumbest robber alias I have ever heard.”

“How many have you heard before?”

“Not. The. Point.”)

All he does is go around and undermine people’s hard work, invading their personal space and infringing on their privacy.

All so that he can make a quick buck.

And sure, maybe he’s not spending all that money on himself, but to make students feel unsafe and unprotected in their own freaking homes and dorms?

And to have nobody do anything about it?

Absurd.

It becomes such a constant source of ire for you that you rant about this almost daily.

But it’s like you’re the only one who understands the gravity of the situation.

Your closest friends are all about this guy, singing his praises and commending his selflessness.

Your junior, Chan, is particularly adamant about the quality of his character (you have no idea about his involvement with the LoGDDNSGDT, of course; after all, he also had to sign the receipt contract).

So you’re a party of 1 in the Anti-The-8 Movement.

He’s three months into it when he makes a rather stupid mistake:

He decides to rob you.

Minghao will later complain that anybody could’ve gotten the wrong idea.

He sees you for the first time in his Korean History class.

He doesn’t exactly know how he missed you before.

First of all, you’re fucking gorgeous

First of all, there is a certain air that you carry yourself with–

It’s poised and self-assured and kind of breathtaking.

You raise your hand to read a passage and even the way you speak is levelled and controlled.

You remind him of royalty some of the other wealthy kids on campus.

Probably trained to uphold a certain degree of eloquence so that you can one day take over your parents’ company and maintain good business relationships. 

And socialize at those hoity-toity parties with the little hors d'oeuvres.

His thoughts are confirmed after class when he overhears you talk with your friends.

You’re asking your friend to take notes in place for you when you go off to vacation with your family next week.

“Heading off to the island?” Your one friend chirps.

“Yeah, dad just finished a successful case and we’re celebrating.”

And wait, an island? These guys must be fucking loaded.

Your friend lets your name slip and it’s all starting to make a lot more sense.

Now he’s heard of your name around campus.

Your parents are lawyers who built an empire, opening up law firms around the country.

They’re known for being ruthless and never sharing their wealth.

In short, they’re prime targets!!

Minghao feels like it’s Christmas– this will be his biggest catch since that one kid who was the heir to the electric toothbrush company.

He trails you and your friends for a few minutes just to confirm the details and then he’s off to plan.

Fast forward a week later to when you should be going off to vacation.

But instead you come down with the stomach flu, and not a pretty one either.

You experience the full range of systems:

Vomit, fever, dizziness, fatigue,,, There’s no way your parents are letting you tag along on the trip.

And you’re too busy vomiting to argue.

So they ditch your ass and head off to vacation by themselves, once you assure them that you’ll be fine on your own.

After all, you are a certified GDI who can take care of yourself.

… Who just so happens to be dressed up in a onesie, cuddling a large teddy bear as you watch Netflix from your nest of pillows on the couch.

You’ve scrolling through your recommended feed when you hear it:

The door opening

And you have to wonder if the vacation ended early because who else… Would…

You gasp when you realize what’s going on, rushing to turn off the television as to eliminate all sources of sound.

All your nightmares are coming true, and you haven’t even fully developed a game plan to approach this awful situation.

Now you’re not dumb, you’re not gonna run headfirst into a situation where you don’t have the upper hand.

Instead, you’ll hide and discreetly notify the authorities when you activate the alarm system.

And so no, you’re not dumb,, 

But you are clumsy.

You’re trying to navigate your way to your bedroom, remote in hand as a backup weapon, checking over your shoulder at every possible moment.

Perhaps you’re checking over your shoulder a little too much, because next thing you know you’ve crashed into a wall.

Except the wall moves and you know that it’s definitely not a wall.

The wall makes a sound, a little grunt and you snap your head back around so quickly, you think you hear the whip of the wind.

The man in front of you is tall and skinny, and seems oddly familiar even with his ski mask on.

You don’t have too much time to contemplate this however , as you’re too busy trying to whack the heck outta him with your remote.

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE YOU ASSBUCKET.”

It's all just too much, and you're surprised you haven't shat your pants because of how scared you are.

But,,,, The8 is kinda just taking it??? He's trying to block you of course (and mostly succeeding to, the jerk) but he's not trying to fight back. What kind of shitty robber…?

You're c o n f u s e d, which is why you stop to look up at him expectantly.

“You done?” His voice incites a whole new wave of panic to wash over you, and you raise your remote to start hitting him again but The8 quickly raises his hands in surrender. “Hey, hey now, I'm not here to hurt you.”

You're skeptical, of course you are. But you think back to all the gossip you’ve heard about The8, and realize that you can’t recall any accounts of violence.

This doesn't change the fact that this asshole is robbing you, so you use the remote to gesture towards his ski mask.

“Take it off.”

And he sighs, as if it's inevitable, but holds up a finger and starts to negotiate,,,, as if he has any right to in this current situation,,, and gosh, how is he so damn calm right now??

“Okay, but if I do, promise you won’t call the cops immediately.”

You don't know why you agree to his terms– you're sure it won't make a difference.

He’ll get the cops called on him sooner or later.

But if it gets him to cooperate… You agree with a swift dip of your head.

The tension in the room is palpable, and you have to remind yourself to breathe as he starts to take off his mask.

And oh fuck you know who it is you know who it is you know who it is.

You recognize him immediately as the cute guy in your Korean History class, the one you've had a crush on since forever and a half ago.

The one that's always hanging out with that group of loud kids…Chan's Precious Seniors

And somewhere in your subconscious, you're freaking out about the possibility of Chan being involved in a crime syndicate.

And further freaking out about how you’ve confided in Chan about your crush in Xu Minghao, who just so happens to be The8 and holy fuck you can’t believe it’s him.

You really don’t have much time to dwell, because the shock and overexertion of the situation starts gets to you, and you’re starting to feel dizzy. It’s like the fever finally catches up to you–

And then you’re falling, fainting–

The last thing you hear before you pass out is the startled cry of your name.

…

You wake up to the smell of broth, and the feeling of a damp cloth pressed to the top of your forehead.

Your headache is devastating, but you’re otherwise positioned comfortably

It takes you a minute to process that you’re back on your living room couch, low hum of the television sounding from somewhere to your right

You try to locate the smell of broth, which is when you meet eye-to-eye with a very timid looking Minghao

He’s more tense than earlier, as if he’s scared you’ll jump up right then and there to attack him

And you would, honest, but the broth,,, smells,,, so,,, good,,,

You motion for him to give it to you and he relaxes before quickly complying, letting you sit up before gently placing the bowl in your hands.

He settles into a stool beside you– one that definitely wasn’t there before, but it’s whatever.

You sit there in silence for a good couple of minutes, Minghao watching the drama playing on TV as you drink your broth.

It’s kinda nice

Minghao’s the first one to speak.

“Please don’t exert yourself like that if you’re sick. You could’ve had a heart attack or something.”

He sounds so small that you just manage to resist throwing the rest of the hot soup at him in the sudden bubble of anger that erupts from you in the form of a hiss.

“Um, my memory might be wrong here but wasn’t it you who broke into my house in the first place, assbucket?”

He chuckles at that, and you’re slowly losing that sliver of self-restraint.

“Assbucket, that’s a new one.” You notice that his accent is more prominent when he’s amused.

“You deserve worse, you assbucket.”

At that he really laughs, and you have to look away to distract yourself from how attractive the sound is.

“You’re cute, you know that?”

You’re not sure what to say to that, and Minghao can tell. He quickly changes tact.

“Listen, I get why you’re mad.” Oh, now wouldn’t that be the understatement of the year.

“But I promise I’m not here to hurt you. I-I won’t even steal anything from here anymore. But please, please don’t make yourself more sick because of me.”

And man, fuck Minghao for making it damn near impossible to call the police on his ass. You don’t say anything more until you finish up your broth.

“Why… Why do you do it?”

Minghao shrugs. “Just because.”

“Just because? You’re violating my home, Minghao. This is my private space, and you’re infringing upon it without my consent.”

Minghao furrows his eyebrows, as if he’s never considered it before. And God, why did it have to be him?

Minghao finally hums. “Would you miss it?”

W-wha… “Huh?”

Minghao nods towards an abstract modernist piece that hangs high up on your wall. “Would you miss it?”

Your silence is more than enough to answer his question.

“But I’m sorry, you know. I truly wouldn’t have come around if I was aware you’d be home. Aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?”

“. . . Minghao, that’s creepy. Don’t do that. Besides, how do you know my name?”

“How do you know mine?”

The fucker. You blush, shrugging and dropping the subject completely. You’re avoiding his eyes so much that you miss the fond smile on his lips. He’s about to say something when a phone sounds. You realize it’s coming from Minghao’s pocket and watch as he takes it out, curious.

Minghao checks his phone and immediately scowls, closing his eyes in what seems like exasperation.

“I… I have to go, so sorry. My roommate just did something unbelievably stupid because he’s unbelievably stupid.”

You refrain from asking; you really don’t wanna know.

“Will you be alright by yourself? I’m worried… I’ll try to stay longer if you don’t think you will… I mean, if you want. Or I can call someone to come or–”

Where was this bashful kid an hour ago? For the first time that evening, you let out a small smile. He sees it and is stunned, momentarily blinded by your beauty.

“I’ll be fine Minghao, go help your roommate.”

He nods, getting up to leave, but not before taking your phone from the coffee table. He holds it out so that you can unlock it, and you do, though the question hangs in your eyes.

“I-I’m not taking it, just wanted to give you my phone number. In case you start to feel worse. Call me or don’t... It’s whatever.”

And so you do.

Bonus:

Three months later, you’re recounting the tale to the rest of the boys during one of their weekly movie nights. (You don’t dare touch the brownies, Minghao tells you they’re fucked.)

In the end, Chan’s the one who says it best: “So… What you’re telling me is that you broke into Y/N’s house to steal a painting, and walked out having stolen their heart instead?”

Seokmin raises his hand for a high five. “Smooth man, smooth.”

Your boyfriend ignores it, though Seokmin stubbornly keeps his hand up and waits for anyone to complete the exchange. You tap your palm against his in pity.

“Actually,” Minghao starts, nuzzling his nose into your hair, “I would say Y/N is the one who stole my heart instead. Just had to fall straight into my arms like that… A true master of seduction.”

You giggle, turning your head to peck his lips. The boys groan, losing interest in your story and turning back towards the movie.

From somewhere in the corner, you hear Mingyu fake a gag.

I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. How much dwelling coverage is sufficient for a home owner's insurance.?

My current insurance covers $480,000 for the dwelling (bot house for $1 mil but i'ts probably worth 700K now). It's 1500 sq feet. I got a really affordable quote for $240K coverage, but is that too low? The salesman said anything more is probably over-insured. My car has been written off and my insurance have offered my 1,250 for it. They said they use some Glass Vehicle Valuation thing so I went on it's website n had the car valued myself n there's 5 categories for pricing the vehicle: Trade-in Excellent condition - 1,376 Trade-in Average condition - 1,210 Trade-in below average condition - 1,066 Dealer sale price - 2,640 Private seller price - 2,221 Which is the price I should get for my car? It was an 02 plate Renault Megane Coupe Privilege + in excellent condition! I found the same car in a different colour on Auto Trader for 2,000. I think I should get the private seller price as I am effectively selling them my car and not trading it in!? My car was set on fire btw!
