so i'm writing some fanfic where the characters get into a plane crash and have to survive on their own with limited medical supplies/knowledge (the characters are age 12-15 but some of them have first aid knowledge to an extent) and i have some Questions (if u don't mind me asking)

(before i start this is SHAMELESSLY inspired by the greys anatomy season 8 finale where the plane crashes)

can you use fire to cauterise open wounds to stop bleeding? or would that just bring further complications?

can you use safety pins as makeshift staples (if you loop them so the skin shuts properly)

the only character who knows how to properly suture needs sutures to stop bleeding out, is it realistic for him to instruct the two other least injured people to suture him up (he can't use his hands) without blacking out from pain?

injuries the characters have: (what is the treatment protocol for each of these?)

one character gets her leg broken with bone exposed (eventually it has to be amputated)

one dislocates his shoulder

one person's hand gets stuck in the debris

someone gets debris in her stomach

one person just has superficial wounds

one character gets debris stuck in her leg

they all have heavy bruising and scrapes as well but those are treatable

things the characters do know how to do:

tie a makeshift tourniquet (advice: do not practise tying tourniquets on yourself because it's quite painful)

suture (one person)

insert a needle into someone's veins (same person)

apply compression bandages to stop bleeding

other super basic stuff (apply plasters, tie an arm sling, etc)

the very basics of cauterising a wound

supplies they have:

tranquiliser guns (limited, and the tranq guns are suited to taking down dinosaurs but they work on humans too)

hand sanitiser and rubbing alcohol (limited)

two basic first aid kits with needle and thread

a knife

cloth to use as bandages and tourniquet material

oxygen (from the plane)

possibly an iv drip???

matchsticks (limited) to make fire to sterilise things and to heat the knife for cauterisation

debris from the plane for splints

food and water (limited)

also how does one put a dislocated joint back into its socket? particularly the shoulder?

sorry if this is super long and for asking so many questions lol. feel free to answer whenever :) and it's completely fine if u don't know (duh) i can research myself but i am sure you're more accurate than a search engine

aight first off cauterisation is indeed used to stop severe bleeding *when all other means have been used* and an open flame is definately not the way to go for tha (burns can be extremely dangerous and a. cause fluid loss and b. increase the risk for nasty infections that can lead to sepsis and death)

instead id suggest heating up metal (like a scrap from the aircraft or sum) via the fire and then applying it to the wound :3

assuming u mean the surgical staples: yes and no? lol obv since this is an emergency there is little space to be picky abt equipment, so honestly safety pins would work ig but i think theyd keep coming loose (oh the agony)

i messed around with one of mine just now and the line that locks into the head (?) is pretty straight so i kinda doubt itll be able to like close flesh the way one imagines it to but its literally fiction lol we can suspend our belief far more than this. as long as its closed properly go for it lmao i give u my blessing XD

yeah sure!! since the patient is awake and aware enough to be able to assess and give instruction i see no reason as to why not lol.

btw in case of an amputation or extremely severe bleeding id recommend using a tourniquet (lots of tutorials online!) to compress the artery and minimise the bleeding :D (ooh maybe u can use the cautery thing here too)

OMG I READ THE FUTURE AHA (my condolences) okay so the amputation will be at the knee level (which afaik is the hardest kind of amputation to perform joint wise lmao. good luck with that) presumably. theyll need a tourniquette as mentioned above, very sharp knife or something to hack away at the flesh and tendons (very tough) and ligaments around the knee socket (even tougher i think). and lots of bandages for the stump

now had they recieived the needed medical attention i doubt theyd need to go up to the knee (there are shin level amputations) but since theyre kids and all alone with no guide or anything idk if theyll be able to save the lower leg bones or even cut though them if they could (i doubt med supplies include saws lol) so yeah thats my reasoning at least.

dislocation is a relatively easy fix (compared to everyhting else lol) but it depends on where the humerus (arm bone) is:

based on which kind of dislocation the direction of pull is determined, but again relatively simple no blood no mess

there are a few maneuvers/ techniques u might want to look up like hippocratic and spaso/ reverse stimson (both for anterior btw)

a hand getting stuck i assume means impaled? oof thats going to hurt. well broken hand bones are pretty rough to deal with in the wild, since all bones need proper realignment to avoid further pain and complications when the body heals itself (did u know that if a fracture heals wrong they have to break it and reset it? yeah.) so im not sure honestly ig it depends on what u have in mind for them

again not too sure what stomach means exactly; are her guts poking out? just bleeding from scratches? depends on what ur going for!! lmk btw and feel free to send more asks ill look up and find what we need to know :D

impaled leg i take it? as the above u need to know what condition shes in exactly like arterial puncture probably means severe bleeding and death honestly, lmk what u have in mind!!

superficial wounds need cleaning and patching up, sometimes if theres like unclean areas of said wounds they need to be scraped off (debridement) esp if theres like scraps or dirt or anything on the wound. what fun!

again for the cautery i think an open flame would heat up the knife much faster than a match lol (also they need to be preserved. also also they wouldnt last long enough i think)

- so we all know she sleeps as much as she can (which bc of the amount of work she has to do w photography and managing definitely isnt a lot)

okay, I'm making the outline for my ReverseRobins! Fic but I need a few things to smooth out:

How did the interaction between Dick and Tim go when Tim went to Dick in Bludhaven to ask him to be Robin again?

What's the background of Duke Thomas? How'd he get Bruce's attention?

Did Cass be batgirl after Tim became Robin?

How did Barbra Gordon become Batgirl? How did she get Bruce's "okay just lemme give u fancy gadgets to make sure u dont get uurt since i cant stop you" stamp?

Cass became Batgirl after Tim was Robin because she was raised by her father to be a weapon and she ran away from her father in her teens, and then I believe traveled until she ended up in Gotham, I'm not very familiar with how Cass got there but I know the jist. She's roughly 2-3 years older than Tim is. Her and Jason only have a few months in age difference like Tim and Steph are.

And yes, Babs and Steph both got equipment because Bruce couldn't stop them from being vigilantes. It is important to note, Steph has the least formal training of all of the girls. Bruce liked her the least in the comics, probably because of Jason parallels, and she didn't get the same amount of training from him, but has been trained by other bats, like Cass and Babs."

11. Think of an animal. Whatever first came to mind, how would your character fare if it attacked them?

the first thing i thought of was a ferret & amadore Could easily overpower a ferret but i dont think he would want to hurt it so he might have a hard time getting it off him. he Could turn into a bat & fly away but also then he runs the risk of getting Super Mauled if it catches him before he can. but also hes a vampire so none of it would be a huge deal in the long run

12. Does your character go to the doctor, dentist, etc. as often as they should?

now u got me thinkin about how frequently vampires need to do these things. i feel like borna is pretty much good. so Yes but also the amount that he Should is probably zero. idk he might need to see a dentist once in a while, which he would if he needed to. he knows a guy

gladly. i love talking about her

she mostly wears the mask to hide her identity but also to just hide her face in general. shes not insecure about how she looks but more just worried about what other people think of her. shes on hrt but she wants to keep her body hair cause she likes her body hair which includes her facial hair though she does regularly shave it cause she knows it gets her misgendered. she also wears a spiked collar and sometimes a leash (if shes not wearing a leash shes wearing some kind of bondage harness thing) both to continue the whole wolf dog thing shes got going on and also for sexual reasons of course

Starting my KC journey - may have already pissed off my new Optometrist?

I was DQed for Lasik in Oct 2023 and the surgeon wasn't forthcoming with the details but said they would send them to my Optometrist. My former optometrist took months to get back to me but said they suspected KC and wanted to refer me to an Ophthalmologist. It took another few months but I was finally able to go and see that Opthalmologist. July 2024 it was confirmed I have KC and he said it was mild and I didn't require CXL. He then referred me to the hospital's scleral lens fitting Optometrists but I couldnt get in there till Jan 2025! So I got a recommended list of Optometrists locally that would do KC fitments. Oh I couldnt go back to my former Optometrist who I really loved because of her thoroughness because she said my case was too complex and she was trying to simplify her cases as she approaches retirement. So this new Optometrist - I went to see them yesterday fully expecting to begin my scleral lens journey - fully understanding this is going to take many visits and lots of trial and error and time for the lenses to come in etc etc. RIght off the bat, this guy nudged me quite a bit towards hybrid lenses. I spent 2.5 hours in the office for the initial visit and he tries a few synergeyes hybrid lenses until we find one that somewhat works. They still feel somewhat uncomfortable but they were the best of the lot. He basically told me I would get 2 pairs instead of 1 pair of sclerals, and that vision would be better, and easier to put in and take out. I was skeptical but I did not push back. I leave and immediately research this group as far as hybrids vs sclerals and for the large majority it seems like sclerals besides the steeper learning curve and journey to getting the right fit, yield better results. I have bad allergies, and dry eyes and it sounds to me that sclerals would be better for these. So I finally decide to email the doctors office and ask them to halt the ordering of the hybrids I was fitted for and I want to change course and go for sclerals. I hope I didnt piss off this doctor - which seemed to be churning through patients while I was there - I'm not sure I'm a fan although I dont know if thats how things work - he said his KC day is Wednesdays so perhaps the work flow is different than standard exams. But it would suck to start off on the wrong foot when you need someone to be patient with the process. I feel pretty good about my decision, and think its better for long term health going full scleral instead of hybrids. I'm just not sure whether I am already seeing orange/red flags with this doctor and whether I can switch offices when I've already paid my copay (VSP insurance). I'm so annoyed because I feel I've been dealing with this issue for more than half my life. I remember 20 years ago my friend who is an optometrist wound up doing my eye exam through the refraction thing looking at the back of my eyes through that to dial things in because I was unable to consistently say whether things were better 1 or 2. 1. ya kno u dont have to do blackface or anything to cosplay as a black character, you can simply dress up as her, u dont need to do anything with ur hair. white people literally cosplay as characters with dif races (esp in anime spaces) all the time and nobody bats an eye

2. the reason why lizzie's design was changed (atleast from my pov) is bcos grizzly specifically capitalized off having lizzie be "ambiguous" and acted as if that was enough representation -- which is honestly pretty shitty, white characters can be confirmed to be white in the show, but the best we had for any POC in general is "oh she has the same skintone as rhianna :3 she has braids" and then turn around and have a white woman for the design. the best i can describe it for you, for what i assume is a white queer (or at the very least a non-Black queer), is that it felt like queerbaiting but for representation of POC.

3. and honestly the "why not introduce characters that are Black from the getgo", aside from the reasons i mentioned in 2, i wanna add that it is important that atleast ONE person who is a reoccuring, is integral to the plot, and close to the main characters is POC. becus the reoccuring crew is literally entirely white aside from lizzie. i personally dont want representation where a character appears for one arc and then disappears, i want someone who is reoccuring and has a deep and meaningful exploration of their character. this late into the series i genuinely doubt grizzly would be able to squeeze in a new meaningful character to the main cast.

4. if u dont feel comfortable cosplaying lizzie, there are literally a billion other pirates to cosplay. u dont need to take what little POC representation (esp Black representation) there is in riptide and invalidate it for u to find another pirate to cosplay.
