here’s a personal longass ramble under the cut bc my adhd brain can’t resist extensively elaborating on every thought and experience it has at any point in time!! read if u want ig??

so i recently found out im like partially colourblind - i suspect slight tritanomaly, which basically means

i see pale yellow or blue as white or gray

i have a hard time distinguishing between similar shades of blue and green (like, i cant tell when its more blue or more green or right in the middle)

i have a hard time telling apart similar shades of red/orange/pink/purple/magenta and sometimes orange and yellow

i have a VERY tough time distinguishing dark colours, especially blue and purple

and like,,,, its just been so fascinating and mindblowing that my perception of the world has actually been different all this time and i never noticed??

like, its nothing severe or anything, and i can still function in daily life ofc since its a pretty slight colourblindness, but its just so weird to me that people can just,,,, see stuff that i cant?? or they see it differently??

bc suddenly it makes sense, all those times when like my family/friends teased me or criticised the fact that i couldnt tell whether a shirt was more blue or green, or called me blind whenever i called green blue and i had to pretend i could see it after they pointed it out even tho it just looked blue to me

and it made sense how i, like, couldnt tell the difference between three (apparently) different shades of red eyeshadow?? like ive been told theyre like. noticeably different. and theyre just identical to me

but it feels so weird like,, people can actually see yellow and purple in the rainbow? people can see yellow in the goddamn rainbow??? bc to me its always just been. a white stripe. in the rainbow. and of course logic and common sense tell me that its scientifically impossible for white to be in the rainbow, but it just is for me and i always figured “oh thats how everyone sees it probably, this isnt weird, lets just accept it, yellow must be some mythical colour they put in the rainbow just because”

and like?? people can see purple in it as well??? bc to me its just dark blue with like dashes of magenta??? like, the rainbow, to me, basically looks like

tiny slither of red - hella orange - white stripe lmao - hella green but also kind of aqua?? - ????? - aqua - dark blue - ??? tiny specks of magenta here and there

and then people tell me there is genuinely yellow in the rainbow?? and im supposed to just believe em???

and like its amazing to me how people can just see yellow marker on paper. like. they can read yellow on white without needing an outline. like i can tell its something vaguely yellow but i cannot read it for the life of me, and like they can easily tell when a message on whatsapp’s been read with just a glance, when i have to stare at the little check marks bc the whatsapp blue is so pale that it looks gray to me, and people actually can see the difference between shit like peach and salmon and pink and light red and warmer oranges and people actually know whether cyan is green or blue or equally both while its such an enigma to me like what the FUCK is cyan

and dont even get me STARTED on the magic of ✨accessibility colour filters✨

cause like apple has the option to set a filter for each type of colour blindness, and like, when i put on the tritanopia filter everything is so much bluer and i can actually SEE when someone reads my whatsapp messages by just glancing at it, or i can see that the emojis are actually pretty yellow and not some weird orange?? and like, in one of the group chats im in on whatsapp, one of my friends’ names on there is coloured purple but i always was so convinced it was navy blue and the filter just blew my goddamn mind bc holy shit you’ve been purple all this time????? and i can actually see the purple and yellow stripes in rainbows?? altho ngl the yellow stripe still looks kinda white even with the filter rip

but like. just. its so weird to find out your perception of the world has always been just slightly wrong and it really reminds you how subjective the world really is bc i probably would’ve forever thought the rainbow just had white in it and that my friend was navy blue in that stupid group chat and now im just wondering what other things i might be seeing just slightly off than what they should be

ooh ahh hi vivi i throw things around until it looks good and for a straight like six months i ripped my color palettes off bts videos. im not lying go and steal other peoples colors + nature i guess. and bts

never use pure white. i like to decide what my substitute for white is before moving onto the rest of the palette bc its tone dictates the amount of light ur showing. never use pure black either cuz there are tones like dark indigo and stuff that look BLACKER than the black ur using.

desaturation is your friend :) like even in the super bright ones you can throw in desaturated colors and altered hues and itll add good depth. you can keep a vibrant illustration without eye-strain! 

on the other hand, dark/musky color palettes can have lots of colors disguised as grey! 

i like everything that makes u feel like ur having a good and fun time. there are always arguments saying that its bad to use like lemon yellow aquamarine scarlet red but those colors are super effective….. if you mix grey into it so its not as painful to look at 

speaking of grey. i use grey as my bg color when i first start a digital painting bc it neutralizes all the colors im using and helps me get a better sense of how itll collectively come together.

im encouraging using the full scale rainbow but like, certain pieces are best shown with limited colors! even so, if youre keeping things simple, you can add depth to flat colors while remaining that flat look with desaturated hints

black white contrasts are... so cool... the lighter somethign is the darker the shadows are.

HISTORY OF PLATANO... yea his name is spanish for banana

his father, pablo, will probably get a name change someday but i literally never think of his father since the only thing he did in platano’s backstory was disappear 

since platano’s world has characters based off like. fruits and vegetables (there aren’t really any limit to what the characters are based off of. it was in my lazy google translate name phase so we have like... a gay character named arcenciel who becomes dadlike through my powerful canon-changing touch. also arcenciel wears the colors of the rainbow as often as he can i haven’t figured out a good design for him since i’m not used to using more than 5 colors. he also owns a hat factory)

i think arcenciel and platano are friends they met when platano was like. 17 probably and arcenciel would be around uhhhhh ummmmmmm 21??? idk man but in canon he’s probably around 30 . yes i m saying��“in canon” because i wrote a really dumb and horrible story back in 2018 arcenciel used to have HUGE internalized homophobia and i turned that into a running joke and i dislike that so that’s a reason why i’m not sharing the fun little story i wrote for my friends

(the best part of that story is when arcenciel threw his light-up rainbow heelies at platano, thus starting the boss fight which the main cast LOST.)

i have a whole doc named platano where i just wrote drabbles about him so i’m going to summarize them

the first one was his friend, percisi (my only cishet oc he’s very short and very aggressive while also dressing in a soft-colored turtleneck since he’s based off of peaches) using a misunderstood form of satanism to summon satan. guess what percisi and platano summoned satan for. it was a manga update! wow

i won’t say the mangas name it was an inside joke

so platano was like “hey satan can i have this manga now please please” and satan went “sure just kill people for me” 

that determined platanos job for the next 7 or so years <3 wonderful. 

(it was basically me writing a backstory for a scene to happen in the main writing i wrote for my friends. he killed someone because someone else in the building was trying to summon satan. very confusing but okay i guess.)

i think right after that i wrote about platano meeting his boyfriend, sage, for the first time. i have horribly mixed feelings about their relationship since it’s very. Hm.

so platano kidnaps people to watch anime with him because all his friends left him and his best friend, mangue, is too busy being a dictator over the Land of the Fruits. i shit you not fruits oppressed the vegetables. i wrote that dynamic between the two because i was learning about the revolutionary war in US History. something like that at least

on the topic of kidnapping people. guess who his favorite person was. sage. it was sage. so he tried to take sage often but they probably discussed Proper boundaries since everyone else tried to run away. hmm i am now going to write a bit right now

“What else am I supposed to do?” The yellow-haired fool leaned on his sword, digging the tip deeper into the ground.

“You keep making my dads worried.” Sage looked around the area, fidgeting with his hands.

hmmm maybe that’s alright idk i’m a little tired so it’s probably a little out of character. sage probably isn’t that loud but i think it was trying to be the dynamic of “oh, we’re not dating” when they kiss every sunday at 5 pm by a romantic river scene 

he’s a character who is, at his very core, horrible and bad. he is portrayed in a way i DESPISE but i’m too lazy to correct it. his interest in sage actually started with me going “hmm i think platano would draw sage like this” then sauce giving me fun facts about his oc, sage, yea sage is sauce’s oc <3 epic win . so sauce gave me fun facts about sage and i was like “time to doodle these in platanos ‘art style’” when in reality it’s just the mockery of people just getting into an anime art style, with the chin so pointy it could cut a cake 

i might reread my old writing from 2018. i gotta agree with the judges for that year i did not write very well

it mightve actually been made in 2017 which would be FUCKIN CRAZY im gonna check rn

Meko did the dance on the page, it consisted of something that looks like it’s from an anime. A portal opened, the familiar scent of bananas and mangoes coming from it. With some hesitation, Meko stepped in. He quickly made it so only his head peeked in.

now that i’m living in london i decided i might as well keep track of all the exhibitions i’ve seen because i know that when im 40 im definitely going to forget about all of this... i was thinking of doing multiple posts but at this point i cba (‘cant be arsed,’ a term my welsh flatmate anjelica has taught me)

sense sound/sound sense @ whitechapel gallery 

this exhibition was about fluxus’ explorations into sound art. i rly like fluxus to begin with so i was excited to see this exhibition. it was nice bc the works were rly gud (i liked mieko shiomi’s embryo of music, which plays an entangled/mangled version of a cassette tape recording of mozart’s minuet -- direct from the accompanying text: “As described by the artist, it is ‘an awkward performance (as if music were taking its initial form)’” -- which i think is a great way to look/hear that work). the exhibition was a collection show w works owned by fondazione bonotto (never heard of them) though unfortunately the room was too small to accommodate everything it kinda just looked like a mess although i really liked the works individually.

its a shame i cant get with surrealism... this lil old lady had some works about the universe and womanhood w a dash of like strange colors and forms and envisioning the light u would see upon exiting ur mothers womb. but anyway i liked this self-portrait she painted

so this exhibition was an in between exhibition done by the mfa 1st year now 2nd year students to show what works theyve been making. really there is no curatorial anything behind this nor any description behind any work so ur really just meant to look at the form unless u ask the artist whats the haps... so i didnt really gather anything from it -- there were works that i really liked looking at and works that i didnt. my mom said the exhibition was too depressing because there were some stuff about death and racism and violence

i liked this work by rafael perez evans despite knowing nothing, though i wonder if its just a better version of a spectacle than works by mark justiniani??? maybe i am just amused bc it is my first time to see it?? i dont know but i thought his work was nicely polished compared to many others from his class

i also liked this hair work by pei-chi wu. i kept on thinking about where she harvested this hair and how she was able to make it into a loosely knit scarf kinda thing without her fingers getting cramped??? also the title (’It’s a long story’) is great

olafur eliasson: in real life @ tate modern

it took my mom and i 3 tries to get into this exhibition!!! the first two times we went to tate, a part of the exhibition was closed n we definitely did not want to pay gbp 20 to get in to see an incomplete exhibition. i was able to see some olafur works in the past 2 years but its def better seeing a hella big version of it. im p sure everyone’s favorite work was ‘Your blind passenger,’ which was this long straight hallway filled w fog that u could only see about 1.5m in front of u. the light changes from white to yellow to blue to white again and its rly such an experience walking slowly and feeling for the walls bc u think ur gonna trip. im p sure tate advertises this as the main selling point of the exhibition which i think it rly is, nothing else in the show compares to this work everything else kinda reminds me of being in mind museum (he had a kaleidoscope tunnel thing, constructed rainbows from mist, and other tricks of the eye)

apparently ‘danh vo’ in reverse (vo danh) means unnamed in vietnamese. danh vo collabed with a buncha other artists n ppl and used their work in his exhibition. the main space had these big mirrors with glow in the dark paint washed over them and also these portraits (i-D vibing) of his nephew/muse taken by his lover, which felt kinda call me by your name ish even though i havent seen the film. everyone seems to be raving about this exhibition though i only really liked one work, which was a letter sent by this french missionary to his father on the eve of his execution. danh vo collabed with his own father who doesn’t speak french but carefully replicated the calligraphy in the letter.

the exhibition was full of diff video works that all had some text flashing with like poppy disco/other fun music playing in the bg. the artist apparently is a professor at brown university and incorporates some theory and political jabs, w quotes by diff figures in history. he had a whole work about how morrissey from the smiths is now a tory but dont worry we dont all have to be tories when we get old. idk i feel like this work was a lil bit too lukewarm take for me?? maybe i have to sit down w it longer n watch everything thru and thru but i think that young hae chang heavy industries does it better

other spaces: UVA @ 180 the strand

this was COOL HAHHAHAA it was super spectacle but i was really amused and intrigued!!! uva apparently is a collective of artists that work across new media and video and walking thru this exhibition felt like being in some sort of interstellar-star trek-matrix kinda vibe?? the first room were these lamps that were swinging around by themselves (kinda like the lamps u would picture in a police interrogation in the films) -- the room was foggy too so u couldnt really see the end of the ceiling it really just looked like lights floating. its supposed to be a commentary on surveillance n stuff?? typical things global north people care about but it was amusing to watch. the other works were like this light beam that made walls?? and theyd close in on u? it was reimagining space as framed by lights. and the last work was this animal orchestra where a bioacoustician recorded snippets from the amazon/ocean/etc and isolate specific sounds by certain species
