1/2 shigure is more interesting than akito because it's implied that the very reason he even fell for her in that dream in the first place was because he always felt empty/dead inside and has been simply using her all along to fill the void because he's always been in a long-term existential crisis. he's trying to find a reason his own reason to live because he can't "just live" for some reason, when he says he's the most cursed of them all i think he means it literally too

2/3 instead of just metaphorically. shigure is the most cursed cause in a way he's the one most tied to the zodiac bond and is allowing it to dictate every aspect of his life, even his feelings, when everyone else, even akito didn't go that far. even though he's the one most actively seeking the breaking of the curse, in reality he's actually the most chained to it and the past and that's an incredibly interesting dichotomy!

3/3 is he a problematic character? yes. is he a bad man and trash person? undoubtedly. i don't know about you but that's still a much more interesting and unique conflict for a character than the stock "i've been brainwashed and abused my whole life so now i'm just gonna perpetuate that cycle of abuse myself"

yeah i REALLY disagree. i know that maybe takaya intended shigure to be Deep like these messages try to imply but when you use your critical thinking skills as you read the manga he is not that deep

he was not having an existential crisis i feel like that implies he was like... having an actual crisis with how he dgaf about how he lives which he never was. like he doesnt care. just cos he felt something for once after having a dream doesn’t mean he was having a crisis w/ how “empty” he was previously.

like you said tho, all along shigure was using akito to fill a “void.” that’s all there is to his character. he had no actual backstory that Didn’t have to do with his obsession w/ akito, there was no implication that he was in a crisis about the way he lived/lives, all he cared about was using akito and making sure she became his. all his character was, was someone who wanted akito to belong to him. this is not interesting in comparison to an antagonist who was abused, neglected, then abused, then recovered, atoned for abuse etc. 

akito was practically brainwashed by her (admittedly well-intentioned) father and neglected and abused by her mother. her mother who used shigure to manipulate akito, and shigure himself sexually manipulated akito (using her abusive mom... WHAT!!!) akito struggled the whole manga with needing to hold onto the bonds of the zodiac even tho in the back of her mind she knew it was falling apart, bc she didnt want to lose to her mother, and as a result of that lashed out and abused the zodiacs, acting out in a way she never had before to try and keep things from changing. after hitting rock bottom multiple times she recovered and still atones for what she’s done. shigure just wanted to possess akito, got what he wanted and all is well for him i guess. 

im simplifying akito’s arc, clearly, but it’s not my problem if you read her story and still came out of it thinking that shigure was somehow more interesting than her. i also always hated how shigure, and his fans, genuinely view him to be the most cursed. did we forget about yuki, kyo and rin? they were the ones actually most harmed by the curse, by akito. 

at the end of the day, though, i also just find that characters who are predators/pedophiles are just not that interesting. so i may be biased.

for the maze runner thing, it was honestly just about the "people appearing one after another without memories" I think aside from that it's very different, especially in terms of general atmosphere. I've read Day 1 too now btw and I loved it sm! I'm really intrigued to see how it continues<3

Also imma be honest as well - i'm the same. Birthright is the only one I finished and other than that I'm like almost through with awakening, halfway with echoes and revelations and idek how far with three houses. I think I get too much into strategizing and spend too much time planning out the classes and skills instead of just playing and then I tend to abandon the games for a while...

So since I'm not super deep into the story myself my 3h au isn't that deep. Y/n would take Byleths place, simply because it makes a lot of sense. And then I sorta assigned the units to the houses based on Vibes TM aka Blue Lions - HHU, Black Eagles - Vocal, Golden Deer Tiger - Performance.

I also felt that some characters shared traits or reminded me of members (Linhardt - Han, Ferdinand - Seungkwan, Sylvain - Mingyu, Claude - Hoshi, Ignatz - Hao). But they'd mostly be themselves and not take over the exact role of anyone. I've also have thoughts on classes for some but not for all. I think Woozi would be something along the lines of a General, Han would be a Dark Mage, Hoshi a Hero, Scoups a Swordmaster or Cavalier (or anything else just give the man a sword) and- yeah I think I'll end it here

Hi, I have always read your furuba reviews and I'm very curious about which are your favorite characters and why?

Thank you for reading my posts<3. I know I've been slow lately, but I'm not in a right emotional place right now, but I'll be back to posting soon. Actually talking abt furuba & story-telling here in tumblr is such a peaceful outlet that I'm thankful for.

While I love 97% of furuba characters, my faves kept changing while I watched the anime. I decided to have 5 top characters as faves & number one kept changing as the anime progressed.

Since I'm all abt story-telling, I think I need to separate the anime from the manga cuz no way in the anime that tohru would be on my top 5, heck not even top 10! I really don't like how her character was reduced to yuki's mommy-tohru, then angel-tohru, then villain-fixer tohru. The real individual tohru with her own personal story is just two eps long, so meh~. Also, while yuki is in my top 5 in the anime, I don't like how he's too perfect & prince in the anime while his own theme is the imperfect non-prince. Kyo's, too in my top 5 but I dont like how his own story is intentionally messed up by the anime with the stupid "I forgot" that contradicts the anime's own canon plot...

So, I'll tell you my top 5 fave character in the manga so fat with no particular order.

Tohru, while I'm yet to uncover her own plot in the manga, so far she has way more character exploration & depth!! She really feels like a different character from the anime! I'm shocked! The facial expressions, the occasional doubtful self-talk, even the "fake-smile"mask she puts is so expressive. She is treated as a character with a personal plot , regardless of being the protagonist. Her own plot is not reliant on being yuki's mommy, or the sohma's shrink, or a fixer. Her own plot line is abt grief & being lonely. It's the most common struggle that we all share regardless of our gender, race, financial status. Death is the ultimate fact & we'll face loosing a loved one & feeling lonely is not related to social skills nor being loved. I'll forever hate the anime for passing on such unique universal theme in favor of emphasizing the most popular shonen-themed coming of age story ( a boy becoming a man) "yuki" or the over-exaggerated drama in "kyo's". Like I dont want them to pass any of the 3 characters plotlines, but the anime made a choice & forever cemented anime tohru as the most "fixer"character in anime history like 98765678 of other female protagonists.

Yuki has way more character & realness in the manga. He doesnt come off as narrator-y as he does in the anime simply cuz the anime only chose the parts where yuki narrates as a voice-over & told us how to feel & dropped all the parts where he's interacting & actually talking to other characters not just the audience. His own personal story is abt "observing, learning & having the guts to make a move & embracing his own imperfection". I love this! Anime yuki is not imperfect. no. he's the icon of perfect prince, he even initiates a set of fanclub girls into the world that they float! He's so perfect, he "heals" a girl simply by talking to her once. That's all it takes him to fall in love & find his soulmate. While in the manga, I'm starting to see yuki display signs of "kind jerk" in the making, that's refreshing!

I admit that I didn't include kyo into my top 5 until se02. Don't get me wrong, he's so endearing since ep1, but didnt seem to be complex nor refreshing as the others. but se02, ep 9 was the first glimpse into his own character depth & I got hooked! I'm so in love with the theme of "repeated mistakes & guilt". it's such a mature theme & speaks to a much wider audience. The more we repeat the same mistakes, the more we self-sabotage our lives. Also, I love the love isn't a magic healing element in his story. He's the most loved character by tohru, yet her love only hurt him more due to his guilt. Moreover, the romantic element itself wasnt a cliche "love at 1st sight, nor lovers since childhood, nor girl fixes a guy, nor guy protects the girl from danger". Not at all. It was "love blooming subtly, little by little by mundane daily life". I cant express how much I applaud Takaya-san for such complex writing. In the anime, kyo only comes when it's his ep, other than that, he's absent or characterless. I hated that. So far in the manga, kyo has an existence even in other plotlines & has different aspects of his character. Also, I'm shocked at how much inner dialogue he has! like no too much that it involves other character nor too little that you dont understand him. It's just the right amount.

Momiji. He's the most balanced character. He isnt fixed by tohru, but isnt perfectly fine either. He's the definition of the right amount of kindness. He doesn sell himself to make other happy like tohru or kureno, nor puts himself in danger to save others like haru. He does help others but also helps himself. He helped his mom forget him cuz honestly that wasnt even his choice. it's the dad's. He participated willingly tho in avoiding her, but he didnt dwell in self pity & locked himself emotionally. He let go of loving tohru & encouraged kyo, but while he genuinely loved kyo, he didnt just back off cuz he's kind & a sacrificial angel. He stood like a man & challenged kyo for tohru's heart, but let go when he realized the choice is tohru's. not them. They can love her aromatically, but she's the one who decides who to be with. I love the theme of "not competing for love". it's not a competition really. never was. Still, as love sick & heart-broken as he was, momiji didnt dwell in self-pity & after allowing himself to heal, he bounced back & smiled. Momiji is no foolish traveler.

The spot is reserved to a certain character that I want the manga to prove their worth. I dont want them to be as shallow as the anime made them to be. I want to see depth. I dont know if the manga writes them better, but once I finish the manga, I'll know.

I wanted to add shigure but no. Despite all the complexity & the unique roles he has & despite how much I love characters with big giant flaws & ugly characteristics, shigre fell from my top 5 long ago. Look, this seems petty but I can't get over the fact that he slept with akito's mom. ewwwww. It makes me wanna puke! so disgusting. yuck yuck yuck! I dont mind that he "cheated"or wanted to "hurt akito by sleeping with ANOTHER woman". As a matter of fact, such acts create drama, ugly feelings & emotional struggle. I love such things in fiction. but he did it with the mother. He actually laid with both mom & daughter in his life. ewwwwww! This level of eww is so revolting to me! Some ppl are disgusted by bugs & worms that they want to puke, me.. when ppl sleep with both parent/off spring, or both siblings. Yuck! & it's even more yuck that it didnt stop their "love" from being real/ happy/ perfect/ passionate! & that it worked in making akito "want him more & be a "woman" for him"... ew!

-Akito slowly and intimidatingly slinks around the estate because she is a powerful and scary God certainly not because she will pass out if she stands up too fast

-at the end of Furuba Akito should have permanently ended things with Shigure and then walked around acting like a 50 year old twice divorced woman even though she's like around 20 and they weren't even formally dating. Ex: Akito, wearing a huge vintage fur coat she found in some closet over slacks and a blouse, taking a sip from a glass filled with a beverage comprised of like one drop of wine and a bunch of cranberry juice: "Just kicked my ex out for the second time. Good riddance, you see-"

-Stole an eyeliner from Kagura one time when she was like 13 and promptly stabbed herself in the eye with it on accident and blamed Kagura.

-Can't even use a microwave. Don't let her cook your kitchen will burn

-When she was a baby Ayame tried to recreate the presentation of Simba with her and dropped her on the floor

-The one time she broke a bone it was because she got pissed off and punched a wall really hard

-Didn't like lit class. Likes reading but hates things like "effort" and "critical thinking." Payed someone else to write the essays she mailed in to school.

-Lesbian but doesn't know what a gay is. Doesn't think anyone suspects anything when she's climbing all over Kureno and Shigure not just because she's generally clingy but because she doesn't know gay people exist. Someone (Hana) has to stage an intervention to inform her that she is gay years in the future after months of everyone having to listen to her talk about how pretty and neat girls are as part of what she thinks is her unlearning being a raging misogynist.

-Demigirl she/they nonbinary but doesn't figure it out for years after she stopped presenting as a man

-Gets anxious about how clumsy Tohru is because of… that incident. One time saw Tohru fall down a flight of stairs and panicked and now she links arms with her anytime they go on stairs.

-Actually sorta likes dressing androgynously when it's her choice. Chronic dressing like a gay person syndrome. 

-Didn't keep her hair long. Cut it off after like a month in a moment of passion with a pair of kitchen shears and then had to reluctantly slink off to have someone make it look presentable.

-Secretly loves plushies but is too embarrassed to buy them for herself. Slowly acquires a hoard postcanon and can bury herself in a pile of them.

-She's very light and can be easily picked up and carried around by any of her friends that want to

-Googled "is hitting people bad?"

-Hana can call Akki over by pspspsps ing at her like a cat and Akki HATES it but still falls for it every time

-Doesn't get anything more than a flip phone and work laptop until postcanon. Generally REALLY sheltered, would get addicted to the first video game she got to play. Probably Animal Crossing.

-Secretly read every book of Warriors as a middleschooler but it became unsecret when she got into a fight with Haru about who could do a better human!Scourge cosplay.

-As an adult Kisa is taller than her.

-Mega lightweight with pretty much everything. Will either LOOSE IT and have an anxious breakdown or space out staring at the wall for 3 hours if she drinks coffee. Would probably be strongly affected by too much sugar. Strictly prohibited from drinking alcohol.

-As a child tried to convince the boys that the zodiac girls all had cooties

-Either can't swim or taught herself in her stupidly large tub.

-Sensory issues, does badly with bright lights, loud/annoying noises, non neutral temperatures, ect.

-Has perpetual cold icicle hands

-Crashes through several rebellious teen phases as an adult trying to find herself postcanon. Bleaches her hair and dyes it some unnatural color in the bathroom, immediately regrets it and dyes it black again. Nobody ever knows.

-One time ate a leaf because she was bored and has -10 impulse control

-Makes other people order for her at restaurants 

-Postcanon she has a pencil box FULL of animal shaped squishies Tohru gave her

-Was one of those kids that got A's without studying (also canonically homeschooled and ik that crowd)

-Starts painting her nails black after she meets Hana. Likes the symbolism 

-Called Hatori her brother by accident once and they both silently agreed to never speak of it

-Rin anonymously mailed her the "I'm sorry women" hat

-Realized she had almost no interests and started ping ponging between hobbies as she tried and then ditched them upon not being immediately amazing at said hobbies. Eventually is given encouragement to keep on trying instead of giving up because she believes she won't be good at it. One of the things she liked was doing stuff with flowers, but she initially ditched it after she killed all the plants she tried to take care of (@ Akki, lying flopped down on a windowsill: Why is everything I touch destroyed… @ her dead flowers: *are dead*). She goes back to it though when she realizes accidentally offing some plants is not a universal statement about her morality and eventually figures it out. Is told to get a personal creative project to work on by her therapist and she sits in the garden and makes a little journal with entries about the flowers and their symbolism complete with illustrations. 

-Connected, has a weirdly large amount of flower symbolism and lore memorised postcanon because of this (@ Tohru: wow a pretty flower! @ Akito: Ah yes, the poppy, did you know it symbolizes death, dreams, an eternal sleep… though is an eternal sleep not as good as death? Are dreams a small taste of what's to come? Also did you know they contain opi-" @ Tohru, confused but likes listening to her friends talking about their interests: 😶)

-Would probably do good with a pet cat for emotional support once she gets over the Sohma biases and can be trusted to take care of an animal.

-The Sohma mansion is always out of hot water because Akito uses it all taking hour long angst baths in the giant tub. 

-Uo+Hana+Akito have a sleepover were Uo and Akito are talking and are just like wow we both sure had a thing for the same dude because of varied ulterior reasons haha that certainly doesn't mean anything and Hana just sits there wanting to bang their stupid heads together like rocks

-Due to general isolation and probable lack of exposure to "memery," I believe that Akito Sohma would fall for the "updog" trap, in this essay I will-

-Akito full on doesn't remember how old she is. Someone's just like "how old r u?" and she's just like (internally) "How long have I endured existing in this wretched world? Hmm" *sweats in the passage of time doesn't seem real when you dissociate in a dark room all day*. Nobody else remembers exactly either. (That's why Shigure put an "I think" on the end of his "he's in his 20's" lol) Hatori can remember if he needs to but that's because he has her medical records. One time one of the younger juuni is like how old is he??? And they talk for 30 minutes and only come up with "has to be close-ish to but older than Yuki and Kagura. Didn't go to school. Was he born or does he just exist??? 

-Akki would be that one person that's always cold and has to be lent sweaters by their friends when they're out. You go into Akki's room postcanon and there's a pile of sweaters on a chair that where SUPPOSED to be washed and returned but just haven't been yet

-If Akito was an animal she'd be a cat... claws, dramatically lounging around all day, climbing all over people, attacking and then being like??? But I want love??? I did nothing wrong??? She's got the vibes.

Anon, this got really long, so I’ve put everything under the cut. Also I don’t have solid rankings beyond my top 2 so I went into ‘tiers’ that aren’t necessarily ordered by how much I like a character. TLDR; I love all the zodiacs for different reasons, see readmore for more in-depth thoughts.

1. Yuki Sohma

Yuki as a character is really, really important to me. I think about him so much, and how he goes from a neglected, unwanted child with no support network to a confident young adult who is so comfortable with himself and free to be happy and at ease and surrounded by those who love him. I think about how important it is that Takaya displays this journey as incremental, and not necessarily linear. I think about how Yuki’s strength comes not only from himself and his desire to improve step by step, but from the support he gradually starts to receive from the people around him. I think about just how important it is when Takaya says that it’s ok to be weak, to reach out for help, and that for some people, it is only when they DO receive the needed support from others that they are able to get better. I think about just how much it means for a boy with so little self-worth to gradually find himself in the company of people who enjoy his presence and like him for who he is, and I think about how he is able to reach out and help others after receiving the warm and foundation he himself needs, when he is emotionally ready. I think about then, how SIGNIFICANT it is to show a character who had absolutely NOTHING in his childhood go on to make sure that his own child has everything he longed for in a home in his childhood. 

There’s a little bit of Yuki in everyone. Every bit of his internal monologue hits like a truck for anyone who struggles with insecurity and low self-esteem, and his drive and aspiration to find his own purpose and happiness, can be a source of inspiration to so many. Yuki Sohma is one of the best, if not THE definitely best written Fruits Basket characters, and I really wish more people recognised this. As sensei once said herself, I know that Yuki will always have his fans, but I wished that more people realised and appreciated his importance in the story and carrying the themes of Fruits Basket.

2. Hatori Sohma

This is more a remnant of a past phase, but Hatori is here because he was my first anime crush ksksksasoksks . Jokes aside though, I love Hatori because of his kindness and selfless nature that is masked by a cold exterior. As an adult I realise that Hatori’s actions are not always perfect or enough, but I still really think that he is someone who truly cares. There are so many instances that improve his character in my eyes. Can you imagine going through what he goes through with Kana, and learning of her marriage, and not feeling bitterness, but relief that she is happy? And yet he values his own happiness so little that it really breaks my heart. Or the way that he doesn’t avoid Momiji after the ordeal with his mother, but checks up on him and in a way helps raise him? Dude is more of a father figure to Momiji than his own dad. Narratively, Hatori’s backstory is such an effective introduction to the darker, more mature themes of Fruits Basket, and yeah you can bet it worked on kid me. 

TIER: “These are great characters, I love their complexity but I’m also just fond of them as well” (no particular order)

Isuzu Sohma

Someone who definitely grew on me this time round. When I was a child I found it hard to understand what she was going through and didn’t really relate to her either. But oh my god, this girl goes through so much. She’s such a kindhearted character at heart, but struggles with connecting with others and receiving their kindness because of what she went through as a child. It’s so hard to watch her struggle, because we know she deserves the world. 

Akito Sohma

Controversial to say I love Akito just after I said I love Rin, lol. I’ve never had an overly negative impression of Akito throughout Fruits Basket (this is partially because my friends used to call me Akito when we were little.....because I was an Asian girl... and Akito is also an Asian girl????? idk now that I’m thinking back over it...gee thanks guys), so it was relatively easier for me to accept her redemption when it came. Akito’s actions are not defensible, but I find it much more interesting to explore where she is coming from, rather than just mindlessly spew hate and wish violent things for her like some people prefer to do. Akito’s character is a tragedy, and I feel like people are way less willing to emphasise when the victim is not “perfect”, per se. Akito went through the same “broken home” parental abuse that a lot of the characters in Fruits Basket went through, but somehow people are unwilling even to extend the tiniest amount of baseline empathy towards her just because he trauma manifested in a way that hurts others. Guys, she’s a tragic character!!! A tragic character isn’t always “a perfect person who has bad things happen to them”, it can also mean “a character who becomes antagonistic because of circumstances.” Her actions are inexcusable, but there is a lot to learn when we explore WHY she became this way.

Shigure Sohma

Gonna try make this short. Shigure is a controversial character but I like him because I like characters that demonstrate moral ambiguity. The point of Shigure is NOT to be a good person, and he doesn’t have to be one to justify liking him. Once again, you can like Shigure and still know that he’s a piece of shit. The whole idea of “he genuinely cares for Tohru but will hurt her if it means achieving his own goals” is a fascinating one to me, because it shows that the idea of “good people” and “bad people” is vast oversimplification of how actual people think and behave. Still though, I’m really not fond of how Akigure was executed in canon. I think the two could have potentially had a fascinating relationship but it ended up being more disturbing and swept under the rug&uncomfortable than interesting.

Momiji Sohma

On the opposite end of the spectrum we have Momiji who is just genuinely such a good person. I like the dichotomy between his outwardly ‘childish’ and ‘immature’ appearance and behaviors, versus what we gradually learn about him: that he has had to be mature and selfless at a very young age, and that he is also very emotionally intelligent and empathetic. Watching him gradually grow up before our eyes (we were ROBBED of it in the anime) but at the same time feeling more and more lost broke my freaking heart. When his curse breaks and he realises that even though he is now ‘free’, that nothing has changed and the damage was already done -  absolutely heartwrenching. He’s someone I would have loved explore more of what happened post-canon, because I just want good things for him and Momo, screw whatever the hell their asshole dad thinks. 

TIER: “I love these characters but don’t focus on them as much as I think the fandom does”

Kyo Sohma

I’m a self-professed “probably don’t think about Kyo that much” person haha. I know I know, sue me. I think its because out of the main 3, I love Yuki and Tohru so much that I don’t tend to focus on Kyo. I still like him a whole lot though!! I’m a big fan of the way he matures and changes throughout the series, and much like how Yuki does too, becomes a much happier person. When I compare early-series Kyo with later-series Kyo, one thing that always sticks out to me is how much more he smiles. The way he smiles at Tohru is so full of genuine warmth and happiness that it makes my heart melt, especially when I think about how this is a boy who has so much baggage, and has to gradually accept the fact that he deserves happiness before he allows himself finally to accept it. 

Hatsuharu Sohma

Most of my love for Haru comes from the relationship he has with Yuki. It takes so much maturity to accept that your prejudices may be unfair, and Haru did so at such a young age. Sometimes I just think about how much Haru did and continues to do for Yuki without the need for reciprocation or even recognition and it just hits me how much of a good person Haru is. He was Yuki’s ONLY friend at a time he had NO ONE, and is the reason Yuki was able to move out of the estate and become the person we know and love. Haha sorry for making this about Yuki again, but I think their relationship also says a lot about Haru as a person.

TIER: “I like Kureno and am tired of making a thousand disclaimers every time I want to say I like him, Takaya-sensei whyyyy”

Kureno Sohma

I really like Kureno. This is again pretty controversial, but let me try to explain. I like Kureno because he’s an example of someone who wants to do the right thing that causes the least amount of harm to everyone, but inevitably ends up making the decision that causes much more damage. It’s a classic “good intentions, bad outcome” scenario and I freaking love it. I love that it’s absolutely not what he wants, but Kureno ends up doing a lot of wrong things and destroying not only Akito, but also his own life in the process. I just find the idea of an adult of his age who is so isolated from all of society that even a shopping trip is something foreign and out-of-the-ordinary, really, really sad. 

On the romance side though,  I hate that Takaya-sensei decided that Arisa would be his romantic interest, but I do like the idea of romance being a part of his arc. (I actually think their interactions are somewhat cute but that the overarching age gap ruins everything - i keep thinking about if Arisa was older or Kureno was younger, but touching their ages at all would affect the plot so I would rather it wasn’t Arisa at all). Just the idea of Kureno by Akito’s side, playing the part of what he thinks is her “lover” (god sensei why are u liek dis), when he meets someone on one of his rare trips outside the Sohma estate that causes him to realise that what he and Akito have is not at all what a healthy relationship should feel like - and it causes him to reevaluate the harm he is doing to them both, and take steps to leave her. That is...not exactly what Sensei did, but I always remember how much I felt for Kureno when he said in the upcoming anime chapter how it was the first time he had felt like he loved someone out of his own choice...I just felt like that one “choice” could have lead him to the realisation that he can start to make more of his own, healthier choices in life. But yeah. Wish it wasn’t Arisa because it didn’t do anything good to her character arc, and it’s creepy. 

TIER: “I really like these characters but don’t go out of my way to think about them”

Kagura Sohma

Ok I lied, I do go out of my way to think about Kagura. I love her too, despite common opinion. I think her reflection of her relationship with Kyo was so wonderful. Her confession that she started to like him out of pity, but that over time they became genuine feelings. But that Kyo can’t reciprocate her feelings so she’s accepting of that, and thankful that he gave her time to express herself, although she will still go on loving Kyo. Kagura is one of those characters where Takaya-sensei once again demonstrates her ability to take a “trope” of a character and actually delve into their psyche and explains why they feel this way. 

Ayame Sohma

I love Ayame because he’s genuinely so much fun! I appreciate the arc of him rejecting Yuki, but how he is now reaching out to help him, and I feel like we don’t get a good insight into just how significant this rejection was until we see it from Yuki’s perspective. I also admire how he is able to recognise his own shortcomings, and respects Hatori because of his sensitivity to other people’s feelings. He’s a character who could definitely have been explored more if desired, but isn’t underexplored or incomplete as is.

Ritsu Sohma

My poor Ritsu. In contrast to Ayame, Ritsu was definitely underexplored. Such a great potential to explore confidence, identity, and assertiveness. Ritsu as it stands though, is largely a minor character who wasn’t given the time they needed to be fully fleshed out. I would have loved to see them gradually gain more confidence over the series!!

Kisa Sohma

Love love love Kisa, she’s such a cutie pie. But I feel like there wasn’t much more to say about her that wasn’t said in her arc. Kisa is more a character who is used to show the messed-up state of the Sohma house/Akito more than she herself is a complex character, I think. I love her arc and her parallels to Yuki though, it gave us such a great quote about needing to be loved by others before learning to love yourself. 

Hiro Sohma

Hiro is known to be an unlikeable brat but I love him as well!!! I think it’s really important to have characters who aren’t just lovely and receptive to Tohru’s kindness, and his character served to show an important flaw in Tohru’s character, and the way that her kindness could be taken advantage of. For Hiro himself though, I think his brattiness is alright because he’s very young, and I really appreciate his efforts to become a more mature person when he recognises his own flaws!

id be interested to hear your thoughts on the ayame-shigure-hatori friendship. particularly what u think hatori actually feels about them (as opposed to what he outwardly displays, if u think theres a difference), but mostly about shigure and ayame and how they feel towards hatori. i never really understood why they would consider him such a friend (ayame specially) or act so tryhard around him (i get they do that prob to annoy him) but anyway, just interested cause u always have good thoughts

i think that their friendship really and truly revolves around being forced together by the curse; hatori holds real contempt for shigure and ayame and bristles in multiple instances when they are referred to as his best friends. but because they are in a situation so specific and complicated and the fact that they were all born the same year is the glue that holds them together, plus all the trauma bonding lol. in general for the three of them, but hatori especially since he is the most repressed and self-hating out of the three, there is something really valuable in knowing everything about one another and being able to talk freely. 

acting like yourself and talking freely is the biggest thing for shigure—hatori is really the only person who knows everything about him, and shigure doesn’t mince his words around hatori, nor does he try to manipulate or influence him. he is unapologetically himself in front of hatori, showing him his good side as well as the worst parts of him, and knows that even if hatori does judge him, that he can’t judge him that hard since hatori knows that his own complacency is just as bad as shigure’s meddling. this goes both ways, too—hatori is extremely frank with shigure, and its at least partially because he has nothing to hide around shigure, and he doesn’t feel the need to save face/be The Responsible Adult like he is around akito or the teens. i think there is a lot of trust between shigure and hatori: that they will keep each other’s secrets, that they can and will call each other out on their behavior and that it won’t affect their friendship, that akito won’t come between them. hatori seems to resent being associated with shigure in particular, which i think has to do with hatori not finding shigure very respectable, but i don’t think he resents shigure himself, just the reputation that precedes him.

ayame and hatori is slightly more baffling to me. i understand why ayame looks up to hatori, since he’s everything ayame is not: he’s stoic, he’s conscientious, and he’s...well ayame says hatori is kind but i’m not sure it’s the first word i’d use to describe him lol. but from ayame’s point of view he aspires to be like hatori, which i think is reasonable especially when you consider how many mistakes ayame has made in the past of his own volition and how self-centered he is (which he is aware of). so ayame very much looks up to hatori in a very brotherly way. hatori, on the other hand....i don’t feel we have enough textual evidence for me to say anything more than it’s circumstantial. i wish we got to see more of these two because i’d be curious to know. my speculation about what hatori sees in ayame is that ayame is always himself all the time and i can see hatori valuing that quite a bit, since hatori is so reserved himself. i can see them complimenting one another in more causal social situations, or just the two of them together, since they are basically opposites and that can work out favorably. but i’m not sure hatori would have approached ayame if they weren’t bonded by the curse.

fb manga lb - chs 90-95

I’m only going to be reading the manga up until this point for now, assuming that this is where s2 will end. I want to leave the rest of the manga for after the season ends so I still have something to look forward to during the break between seasons 2 and 3. With Covid, I’m assuming it’s going to be quite a while before we get the last season. So I want to enjoy this journey for as long as possible. If they end up going beyond this chapter, I’ll make sure to read further, but for right now I think this is a good stopping point, unless you guys think they’re going to adapt more or leave off somewhere else? O: 

We going into Kyoko’s backstory now apparently!

“I feel like imprinting all of her images into my brain, and forgetting everything else not related to her.” OH MY GOD. MY HEART?? This is peak romance. Kyo only wants to hold onto his memories of Tohru while he’s in confinement.

No, but... imagine how Kyo feels right now in this moment? Tohru has the DVD, the memories of Kyo in the play tangible right in front of her. I’m sure that Kyo is thinking of his future, of the fact that once he’s confined Tohru will never see him again, and having these DVDs will be a comfort to her. He doesn’t know that she’s trying to pursue a way to break the curse. So having this DVD, for Tohru, in Kyo’s eyes, is the best possible way for him to stay with her. I’m reaching, yeah, but that’s just how I’m choosing to view it rofl.

Kyo, sweetie... stop punishing yourself, please. You are allowed to be happy, you are allowed to wish to be with Tohru. You are allowed to think of her mother. Fuck what Akito told you. :( 

I can’t wait until Tohru learns that Kyo knew her mom. I don’t think she’d be the type to blame him for what happened to her. As it is, I don’t feel that Kyo had a ‘role’ in her death, anyway. He didn’t outright kill her. Perhaps he saw it, maybe he could’ve stopped it, I don’t know. But I don’t think it was his fault. Kyo has a massive inferiority and guilt complex (which is understandable after all of the abuse he’s suffered) and he’d blame himself no matter what, though.

Young Kyoko is something else rofl. But of course, she had a terrible past too. What awful parents. I think I can count on one hand the number of actual good or decent parents that this series has. 

Oooh is this Katsuya? He definitely looks like an older version of Kyo lmao.

This age gap though is kinda... yikes? I wonder if the anime will try and lessen it a bit. I don’t think they will, though, since it was mentioned that Kyoko never went to high school.

How he was treated by others, as a child, was not his fault. I hate that he feels he has to forgive Akito because he thinks he’s the one at fault. It’s okay to be angry and hateful of your abusers?

Thank you for sending an ask, and yes I do, quite a few.

But they’re all under the cut because some of them are spoilery and I have some followers who have never played Fates

1. She did not know about her and Corn being cousins. (they never state in game if Azura knew, so Imma say that she did not)

2. Out of her Hoshibros, she was closest to Hinoka. (I rlly like their supports lmao)

3. In her first few days in Hoshido, she was convinced that they were lying about not wanting to her, and every time they wanted to help her or give her food, she was convinced they wanted to kill her.

4. She actually had a decent relationship w/ Garon before he became possessed and shit. Especially when Arete and Garon were courting.

5. She barely remembers this, though.

6. She had one friend in Nohr, (one of her step-siblings) but they were one of the first to die in the concubine-wars

7. This sibling liked to tell ghost stories, and that is where her love for ghost stories came from

8. She’s a crazy cat lady at heart lmao

9. Her favourite memory of her memory of Arete was when she got to sit in the audience at one of shows in Cyrkensia. This is what inspired her to become a singer just like mama

10.Her and her wonderful nephew (Kiragi when will u be added in Heroes?) have a really good relationship, and he makes her feel wholesome and good.

10. She’s terrible with kids due to most of the kids she knew growing up tried to kill her at some point.

10. She actually did have retainers for a short while in Hoshido, but they didn’t trust her due to her being “Nohrian” and eventually betrayed her. And she hasn’t wanted to have retainers since (bc of her amazing trust issues)

11. She truly and deeply thinks nobody loves her lol (not really a hc but whatever)

12. Sometimes when she’s in Valla, she visits her fathers grave, placing flowers even tho she doesn’t remember him

13. Although she likes Hoshido in almost every way better than Nohr, she doesn’t enjoy the fashion as much, and that’s why she doesn’t wear Hoshidan clothes

14. Mikoto made her the dress she has right now, making sure to make it look Vallite and not Nohrian

15. She tried to learn how to ride a pegasus while in Hoshido, but failed miserably.

16. For a while, she asked what Corrin was like, and tried to be like them, in hopes to raise her Hoshibros’s spirits

17. It didn’t work at all, and just strained her relationship with Pineapple more.

18. Upon meeting Mikoto for the first time, Mikoto asked if her mother was in good health. When Azura answered with the fact that her mama was dead, Mikoto almost started crying. Azura never knew why until she finds out they were sibs

19. Her and Oboro have a pretty terrible relationship (i’m sure u can figure out why)

20. One time in Hoshido, she lost her pendant, and made everyone stay up looking for it.

21. She hates tomatoes. Her and Leo will often argue about whether they taste good (it never goes anywhere but u know Leo, he needs to be right about everything)

22. She tried to save Arthur when he defended her (see their supports)

23. The guards at Castle Krakenburg hated her guts cuz they would always get in trouble when she ran away.

24. She knows about Sakura’s dolls (see Kaze and Sakura’s supports) and actually helped her make a few of them

25. She never knows how to react to physical affection

26. Like when someone hugs her, she just awkwardly pats them on the back and tries to get them off of her

27. She was very suspicious of Jakob for a while when she first met him. 

28. His over the top love of Corn reminded her of her retainers shortly before they tried to kill her, and she was convinced he was buttering Corn up and was going to hurt them at some point

29. She does not get along very well with her wonderful nephew Shiro. She finds him too loud and brash.

30. She supports Forrest with every bit of her living soul and would die for him.

31. She doesn’t really know how to talk with Sieggy, and most of their conversations are really awkward small talk.

32. She finds Kana, like Elise, a handful, and far too much energy for her.

33. When she dies in Conquest and Birthright, she thinks of Shigure, and how he must be experiencing the same thing that she did when her mama died

34. She absolutely hated having to put Shigure in the deeprealms, since she didn’t want Shigure to have to grow up without parents there, like she did

35. She only ever wears clothes that match with her pendant. That way, people are less likely to notice it.

36. She wasn’t originally planning to stay with Corn in conquest. She planned on just staying with them untill htey were near enough to the border for her to get back to Hoshido

37. But then she started to like Corn, and opted to stay

38. It was incredibly hard for her to have to watch Pineapple’s descent into insanity.

39. And she stayed up crying about it a lot.

40. She’s babie.

41. Also she doesn’t actually know how to swim, she just kinda uses her pendant to drift thru water (like in the first cutscene u see her in)

44. She actually likes her Nohrian Dance outfit more but will never admit to it.

Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head lmao.

The thing is, as mad and wild as akito goes towards the end of the manga, as much as she utterly loses herself and hurts other people, she still remains almost completely relatable for anyone.

Her main motive for everything - if u crack them down to their very being that is - is fear. Of course it's not simply one fear. It's many of them. And I'm pretty much sure everyone can relate to at least one of them.

The thing that might be the most common is the fear of being unloved and anyone who has ever gone through a bit of a harder time is sure to can relate to that. Even if it's overthinking. God, if that dear hadn't driven akito to do all those things, she would 100% have been loved more by some. But the morale of the story is that despite who she is there are still people willing to love her in any way she is. On one hand we've got Shigure who surely was obsessed with her but who also genuinely loved her, who was willing to sacrifice his entire life just to call her his, on the other hand we have Tohru. Tohru who just wants to make friends and wants to get to know her without any ulterior move. Pure, platonic love.

The fear that for me is the most striking is the fear of change in general. Akito can't bear the thought of losing people, but thing is, losing people is part of life. That doesn't necessarily involve death, but arguments or simply both changing to the point of not needing each other in life anymore. that's it. That's just how life works. And akito tries to deny that part of it because she desperately clings on to the past and few happy memories of it, but it never does her any good. All it does is twist her and make her hurt people. And then in the end, when she sees that she s not the only one struggling with that, she changes. She noticed how change is necessary in life and how she herself isn't an exception. And she does. She voluntarily makes the decision to throw over her entire life and respect other people's wishes and we see her feeling sorry too.

And if that isn't what u call character development then idk? I may be biased because she's my fav but even if u hate her, from an objective point of view, she is an incredibly well written villain with very relatable motives that make us think about what we should do and what not.

I just finished my first playthrough of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and here's what happened:

• Damnit I was kinda hoping to side with Nohr (because of Xander) but I apparently got the wrong version of the game.

• Met a ton more people. Really liking Orochi and Silas as they are my favorite to play.

• Chapter 15. Fuck.

• I'M SORRY KAZE I DIDNT KNOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THAT CLOSE

• Surprisingly my avatar was really strong while I contemplated whether I should redo it or nah

• Continued to go through it, met a ton more people.

• Married Silas. Fuck I was just really into the 'childhood friends' schtick and his stupid charming grin

• Oh.

• Oh wow.

• Children huh, and they're nearly as old as I am now too.

• Damn.

• For the rest of the playthrough I just played matchmaker lmfao

• Their children are really strong tho. Shiro, Caeldori, Asugi that little shit, Rhajat, Kiragi, Hisame and Shigure are now my favorite go-to players.

• For some reason Takumi became my favorite archer, Kiragi my second.

• Abused Ryoma's crazy crit attacks.

• And people started dying left and right I HAD NO IDEA IF I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HAVING A BOND WITH THEM OR NAH

• Leveled up to get crazy strong for the last boss fight.

• Finished it and then DAMNIT AZURA

I feel as if I missed something here. For one, who tf is Azura and why she disappear like that and two, what's wrong with my dad, I mean my ex-dad. I mean, my dad that killed my other dad and used me as a pawn, dad. I guess I have to find Conquest and that other game I forgot the name to figure out the whole story. In the meantime, I'll be playing through it again, SAVE KAZE, and live in peace.

30 FIRE EMBLEM HEROES ASKS

1: how long have you been playing FEH?

Since its release. I think I waited for a week or something to actually download it as I was busy with exams and stuff so my boyfriend was the first to download it and was telling me too much stuff about it so I gave in.

4: who did you choose to summoner support, and why?

Chrom, because I couldn’t choose anyone else instead of my husband I’ve finally finalized his built some time ago and he’s a beast that survives everything apart from blue mages! (Totally not abusing this chance to show off my husband… he was so expensive, gosh)

(my pride and joy *wipes off tears* … Aether because he’s savaging TT atm, but usually he carries Bonfire. Distant Def was such a game changer as he survives red and green mages now and kills them in player phase… don’t underestimate that absurd HP pool)

5: do you ally support units based on ships, or synergy?

I’m so horrible at this because I swap units a lot so I ally supported only Chrom and Robin(F) (Ship obviously) and Xander and Reinhardt (Synergy). Although Robin and Chrom are also part strategy as in ideal situation I would ally support male Robin but Female is better in cleaning blue units which Chrom sometimes has trouble with. If one day feh brings back Spring event and I obtain Spring Chrom I would ally support him with Male Robin and build one Robin just for him. (^u^)

7: do you prefer using top tier units, or favorites regardless of tier?

I use my favourites whenever I can (the ones that I have) but you can’t obviously clear missions, quests and all maps without top tier units. But for arena defending team and active team I try to include as much favs as I can. I’m unfortunate that some top tier units I really couldn’t care less about and am always angry when thinking that some of them are so op but some of my favs really useless…

10: favorite cavalry unit?

My imaginary Leo that I don’t even have yet but has a prepared built for when he decides to come home.

A serious answer would be Xander and Spring Xander. Spring Xander is so underappreciated but he’s a wonderful wall and does wonders when used correctly. Mine’s build is not even finished yet but still kicks ass.

11: favorite flier unit?

Cordelia. Sporting a wonderful quad-hit build she’s basically the only flying unit I use. But I use her as often as possible and she’s part of my “main” team as she takes care of Chrom reaching all the targets he needs. :)But I wish to build a good Subaki one day (all for using favourites tehehe).

12: favorite armored unit?

This is the category of units I only use when quests ask for them tbh. The lack of mobility doesn’t suit my battle style at all. But Black knight is the one I use most often.

13: favorite infantry unit?

Hahahahahaa, this is like asking which is your favourite Pokemon. Well, Chrom would be the most obvious choice as my absolute fav, but as units I really appreciate Kagero, Arvis, Nino and Young Tiki. Also, I just recently got a +spd Takumi and am so excited about building and playing with Quadumi (like regular Takumi is okay but he lacks power… enemies keep staying alive and killing him in return as he’s weirdly fragile).  Runner ups are raven tomes, my two Robins and Sophia, which are so fun to use, and new performing Azura as the extra buffs after a dance are sooooo useful (even tho she’s the least fav character out of the 4 performing dancers I ended up using her all the time). I don’t have a 5 star m! Kamui but he would fit my battle style well so I imagine he will be on the list one day that I finish him. :3

14: favorite limited unit?

Out of those that I have - it was Spring Xander for so long (well, to be honest, he was my only limited unit) but these new dancers are so gorgeous and useful that there is a competition right now for this prestigious spot.

I will take liberty and say that my fav limited units are Spring Chrom and Spring Leo, because they are obviously biased favs that I will never stop regretting not getting… AND CHRISTMAS ROBIN OH GOSH I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS EVENT TO FINALLY HAPPEN!!!! I will be so devastated if I don’t summon him…

15: favorite dancer unit?

Ah, here we are… Performing Azura, as she’s the best support out of all but I really don’t like Azura as a character so I’ve got a problem with this. To be honest, my Inigo and Shigure are not finished yet so they are not performing the best they could. Atm, performing Olivia is the only dancer I’m using without regret and am quite happy with her (if only she had a slightly better attack to be a good user of a poison dagger). Plus her art raises the beauty of my team for 100000%, so that’s a plus as well. 

16: favorite colorless unit?

Kagero. And performing Azura. And I have a feeling I will love my Quadumi once he’s finished. :3 (If only I had Kagero that wasn’t -atk that would be glorious OTL).

19: favorite voting gauntlet match?

Nothing will ever top Chrom vs. Ephraim. I’m so sorry for whoever thinks that anything can be more epic than that. That was a true battle between two same armies and even without multiplier that match so intense all the time. Also, no grudges afterwards. Even though Chrom lost I respected Ephraim’s team so much and was so grateful for that match.

20: any ideas for a future gauntlet?

Nohr vs. Hoshido has to happen someday. Other than that I wasn’t thinking about them that much. I would love to see more limited units voting gauntlets too. ^^

Oh yes, I just remember running into someone’s else post about the Fates retainers wars! That would also be so fun and unpredictable imo as retainers are really not in the top fav characters so I think the result would be really hard to predict here.

24: name one character you’ve always wanted to summon but have never been able to

Already answered so I’ll just copy-paste the answer:

LEO (both summer and regular) AND ALM! I had just the worst luck with summoning them when they were featured on the summon banner and I spent so many orbs… *cries forever when thinking back on all those orbs*I am still hoping to get them every time I summon red orbs regardless the minute chance for that happening as they are both 5star exclusives in red colour which is full of units. Oh, and BOEY as well… although he’s not that rare (as a 4 star unit) I still haven’t managed to summon him, even though I was summoning green orbs for multiple banners but no luck. I am not too worried as I guess it’s just a matter of time… with green pool not being that large and as he can be summoned as a 4 star unit. I just wish for my favs to come to me so I can build the most biased teams full of favs forever…

Spring Chrom would be here as well but as that was a first limited summon event I wasn’t that much invested and found the idea silly so I wasn’t really trying to summon him but now I regret not caring so much… So I wish I was trying to summon him back then and hope that event will be back.

25: which unit do you hate summoning the most?

Stupid Seliph oh gooooosh. I get so much of them it’s crazy…. and of course I summoned a 5 star of him… He sucks as a unit, can’t be used as a fodder and is from a game I haven’t played so I couldn’t care less about him… every possible con of summoning him comes together.

But Soren came really close recently as he fits some of the abovementioned categories as well... Plus, he could have been Boey, so that’s why I hate him >:C

28: which unit(s) would you like to see added in heroes?

KAZE. What’s happening with him not being in already, INTSYS????? He’s an avatar’s retainer for christ’s sake! 

And I am excited for when they start including the second generation of Awakening/fates (with their regular designs that is). I’m so excited for Kiragi, Morgan, Faust and Cynthia! And regular Shigure oh gosh, just please let their art be beautiful. ;u; But basically, just give me Kiragi so I can ally support him with his papa ;;;;u;;;;

29: which units artwork is your favorite?

So the first that I thought of were Alm, Corrin(M), performing Olivia andAttack art of Takumi (so dynamic and full of details wow), but just to be sure to not miss anyone I went through all units and these are other units whose art I swoon over (I don’t have all of them, unfortunately ;;n;;): Ryoma, Boey, Robin(M), Spring Xander, Summer Leo, Arvis, Berkut, Felicia and Sakura.

Of course, I am also very biased so even though at first I didn’t like Chrom’s artwork I am now very attached to it (especially attack and damage pose oh gosh). I still wish he got some other artist to do him justice and make him less two-dimensional…

30: which units artwork is your least favorite?

This new Arden unit, Lloyd, Ogma, Eliwood and Jagen are the units I really despise looking at. But Lilina, Cecilia, Ike and Marth are my least favourites on the other end of the spectrum... I just very much dislike heavily saturated colours with simple shading (Roy is at least cute, so he’s forgiven). And Rebecca, holy shit what’s happened to her eyes... Soren is in here somewhere too because of the poor choice of colours and that weird shading technique.

Idea for a story: failed revelation au AGAIN HAHA shigure is the key to defeat anankos in hopes that his powers combined with azuras in the past will be enough to weaken anankos (n sacrificing himself instead of his mother doing so)

Unpopular opinion: as much as i like his existence i REALLY hate the babyrealm. nt really a popular opinion bt an opinion tht haunts me for years lmao.

Favorite relationship: i….tbh i really like his chemistry with rhajat. (mostly since laslows his dad so laslow can see tht shigures love for creepy person is obviously gotten from olivia lol) but alas their S support sucks so i pretend that never happens lmao.

Favorite headcanon: OOOOOOOOO shigures right eye is actually pure red. this is because of laslows genetic trait but instead of dimming back to its natural yellow colour it stays red n shines just as bright everytime shigures emotions get to him. also, without him realizing it, hes actually a bit passionate himself where it kinda creeps people out.

Unpopular opinion: tbh i like hw the localization made soleils S supports with most of the dude end in friendship. since the only S support (besides with kamui) that really ended with love was with foleo it justifies that soleil p much prefers cute, feminine looks
