One of the last practices I did at the shala before #typhoonodette slammed Siargao so bad. Swipe left to see the aftermath. When we receive a tragedy or a shock in our lives, our body tends to go into fight meaning looking for someone to blame or flight meaning we try to calm ourselves with clichés like "everything happens for a reason" response. In these trying times like in yoga, when we feel our body resisting, is to breathe through it. We must become more present than usual. By breathing into our discomfort, we empower ourselves to feel uncomfortable without panicking. Each new breath draws us more deeply into awareness and allows us to move on to the next breath, the next step. We feel sadness, horror, grief, compassion, acceptance, anger, relief, sorrow, and, just for a moment, awareness of it all. One breath at a time. . . . . . #yoga #yogi #yogamen #yogadudes #yogalove #yogainspiration #yogaeverydamnday #yogaformen #yogaforlife #boysofyoga #mensyoga #ashtanga #ashtangayoga #ashtangi #intermediateseries #kapotasana #backbend #siargaoisland #yogaph #yogaphilippines #grammerph #igersmanila #fit #fitspo #pinoygram #helpsiargao #igyoga #instayoga #siargao (at Siargao Island Philippines) https://www.instagram.com/nomnomenclature/p/CYbPN_tPRYz/?utm_medium=tumblr

At this very moment, a strong, cold gust of wind rocked my windows. I looked up at the ceiling just like that during Typhoon Odette's wrath last year. It makes me anxious. 😟
Lord God, bless each and every person affected by Typhoon Paeng and surround us with Your love, protection and your holy angels - our protector and spirit guides. AMEN. 🙏

When Typhoon Odette hit Cebu in December, this happened. It was a really difficult and sad event in my life because it was the first time I had ever experienced such a dreadful tragedy, and it was also my first time experiencing such a typhoon. I'm proud of myself for not giving up, and I thank God for our safety, even though we spent Christmas without running water or electricity. With the generosity of my friends in Mindanao, we were able to help more than 20 people in our community who were less fortunate and couldn't afford food.Despite the fact that we are still students, we gather donations to assist those in need. I'm grateful for my friend's initiative in supporting us during this difficult time.

Typhoon Rai (category 5) hit the Philippines in Cebu on December 16th. I was terrified as many of my families' homes were directly hit and I could not get in touch with my parents. A week later we received word that my parents were safe and their home is standing, however four of my cousins have lost their entire homes. Since many kind people on my social media have offered to send money to help, I knew I was going to create a campaign to raise money to rebuild, and to provide clean water, food, and clothes. I was hoping to directly hear from my parents in order to asses the damage surrounding them before creating this campaign, but they still have no way to communicate with us and I know my cousins need help right now and not later. Their children are using plastic bags to try to stay dry. I have been in touch with my Auntie Peggy Figueroa in Colorado who visits these cousins often and has a way of communicating and sending money directly to them. We have already sent them money to provide food for the last two weeks and for some of the lumber to start rebuilding. Based on the receipts of money already spent on lumber, food, and supplies we have estimated that $1,000 per family would be enough to finish rebuilding the homes, buy blankets, clothes, water and food. So that is a total of $4,000 for four families. The names of my cousins who have lost their homes are Grace Ferrer, Ranela Esgana, Delia Magale, and Maribel Magale. In the Go Fund Me updates I will post photos of things they have already spent money on to give you an idea of how much things cost there. I will also post screen captures of conversations between my Auntie Peggy and myself in regards to this. I am doing this to provide as much transparency as possible. I will stop the campaign when the goal is reached. The link to the gofundme is in my bio. #typhoonraidonations #disasterrelieffund #helpingfamily #averose #naturaldisaster #typhoonodette https://www.instagram.com/p/CYOBas2rme6/?utm_medium=tumblr

All that Manang Bing and Monong Toto could save before evacuating from the typhoon were their birth certificates and the clothes on their backs. Typhoon Odette completely destroyed their pumpboat—their means of livelihood—as well as their clothes and belongings. Yet, they have been nothing but selfless and were quick to take action on facilitating emergency relief operations in their barangay. We are so grateful to these community leaders and will continue to work with them in developing sustainable plans for disaster preparedness and mitigation here in the grassroots. Batang Hamog level unlocked! But kidding aside, I wasn't expecting that this will be the way how I will exit the the tear-drop shape island of Siargao (Not permanently). Everyone was caught off-guard and by surprise when #typhoonodette hit the entire island so bad. It literally turned the surfing paradise into a sort of complete wasteland in less than five hours on that fateful day of the 16th of December 2021 even my own home was not spared. This was me 3 days after typhoon Odette to pick up my transportation which I left uphill of Tawin tawin where we evacuated since majority of the roads and streets were blocked by fallen branches and uprooted trees after the storm. It took me six days of no electricity, no network, no water from the tap but to fetch water from the deep well to take a bath, no proper sleep, six days of cigarette and water diet since I literally don't have the appetite to eat proper food though that there is really something proper to eat to finally decide that it's time for me to go back to Makati temporarily. It was an amazing, nurturing and nourishing almost a year of experience with you Siargao. I am not bidding farewell nor abandoning you. I will comeback once I am mentally and emotionally recovered. SALAMAT KARAJAW, Siargao! 💔🥲 Ps. Thank you to all of my friends whom I consider my family in the island who supported me emotionally, physically, and mentally during the time that I was a complete disaster post-typhoon. @iambobbiethegreat (Mindy and Mother) @xiannemische @gui_spain @snarkynippy @the.lone.lioness Ron @jpearlieeee For those who want to extend their help to Siargao in order for our home island to recover, follow @tindogsiargao to see ways and means to help the island. . . . . . . #siargao #siargaoisland #supertyphoon #survivor #resilience #ashtanga #ashtangi #riseup #recover #helpsiargao #pinoygram #grammerph #igersmanila #yogi #wewillrise #strength #help #gratitude #nourish #trauma #thankful #grateful #iamalive #tindogsiargao #philippines #fateful #typhoon #letushelp #surfingparadise (at Tawin Tawin Siargao Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYL-HrJvUPt/?utm_medium=tumblr

After hearing about the impact of typhoon Odette on kids in Surigao, we are fundraising and encouraging everyone to be involved in financing the gift-giving and counseling service on March 11-13. (You can find in the attached photos ways to participate.) 😊

Apocalyptic kaayo ang feeling. Almost all stores look like this...Day 7 today. Traffic is really crazy. Long queue everywhere.😢 Power and water has been restored in few parts of the city but in Tabok, ghost-town feel gihapon kaayo. #aftermath #typhoonodette #pasko2021 #situationer #bangoncebu #staysyrong💪 (at Mandaue City) https://www.instagram.com/jacvelasco/p/CXzWFcvvxVg/?utm_medium=tumblr

I want to live
I have never in my life truly understood what it feels like to be devastated by a storm until Odette happened. I have been living in Siargao for roughly a year to work and the storm’s landfall really was no joke. It was a Category 5 Tropical Cyclone and it wiped out not just our neighborhood but the most of Surigao Del Norte.
I can’t even begin to describe the details of what went down, otherwise, I might cry again. It’s the most traumatic thing anyone can experience and I am just so grateful that we made it out alright.
Even before the storm happened, I already felt in my heart how much I wanted to live... finally! I’m surrounded by genuine people who care for me, I love my job, and everything has just been peachy. I’ve never wanted to live more than this moment, and thinking about all the other times I exclaimed to the world how much I wanted to die, all I could think of is How dare I? I had no right.
Every little thing fucking makes me cry. Being served a glass of cola with ice makes me cry. Fuck, I’m alive and I get to enjoy this drink. It seems so mundane but it’s such a miraculous feeling. I’m safe, everyone I love is safe, and a lot of people are helping get Siargao back on its feet. We will bounce back and live.

WATER IS LIFE ⚔️💧 Transportation and packing for distribution. This relief is a drop in the bucket of the serious need for drinking water in the southern parts of this island. We need huge water tanks and trucks, if anyone in Bacolod and nearby areas can help. Salamat for everyone who has donated to this mutual aid effort! This is an ongoing operation with our volunteer team as we work with local communities to get water filters and figure out more sustainable solutions and climate crisis response. 🗡️🔷🗡️ Venmo: @survivalarts Typhoon Relief Ops Survival Arts x Food Not Bombs Bacolod Hinobaan, Philippines 2021 . . #WaterisLife #TyphoonOdette #TabangHinobaan #FoodNotBombs #SurvivalArts #Philippines ᜉᜇᜌᜓ (at Hinoba-an) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYBEPmtPq56/?utm_medium=tumblr
