Woman wears a skirt in historical fiction/fantasy: oppressive! Impractical! She cannot do anything in this horrible garment, and either ditches it or wishes she could (but she’s not MASC, ew, unsexy)! this is unilaterally an impossible and bad garment that no woman who has anything worthwhile to say actually wants to wear!
Man wears a kilt/toga/robe/tunic/sarong/kurta/any other type of skirt-shaped garment in historical fiction/fantasy: [No comment except perhaps “well it’s not ACTUALLY a skirt and in fact it’s insulting that you would call it that. It being a skirt would be bad. For reasons we are not going to delve into any further than that”]
#fiction#nuance#it’s almost like The bad thing… Is being REQUIRED to wear any type of garment based on gender#not the actual garment itself#(But also please examine why your knee-jerk reaction to a skirt on a man being called a skirt)#(Is to vehemently insist that it’s actually not)

doing Sam's outfits is slightly harder than expected because I'm fighting the urge to just put him in cute outfits while I'm trying to draw what I think he would Actually wear. not just what he'd slay in, but what he would actually own and wear under the given circumstances.
like I keep picturing him in mock/turtlenecks for work, classy but comfortable, and I just Feel like he wouldn't actually wear an off the shoulder top with a scarf as a shawl and a choker to stand in for the mockneck vibe, even though it would Slay. I feel like he'd think that's too Scandalous for work, at least since he hasn't worked there that long, it's not time to get Wild and start showing Shoulder yet.
I also don't think he'd own a gorgeous fitted dress with gold chains and a slew of gold jewelry. Not because he would never want to wear it but because He Doesn't Make That Kinda Money.
I do think he'd own a silly little onesie tho. As a treat.
#ramblings with major#the magnus protocol#tmagp#samama khalid#alice was so much EASIER cuz shes BEEN THERE for almost TEN YEARS it would make SENSE for her to care less about dress code#and i already decided shes obsessed with flannel and does diys in her spare time so her making a patchwork skirt#of work-appropriate length and wearing it isnt that crazy#but sam tho.... he doesnt strike me as a diy type. he'll sew up a hole but thats about it he's not gonna handmake a garment#i think hes at least somewhat stylish tho. he knows what kinds of items he likes and they look good together he can piece together a Fit

>checks care tag >"hand wash cold or dry clean ONLY!!!" >checks fibre content tag >"100% plastic! :) :) :)"
#girl you are going in the cold water delicate cycle you'll be fine#the ONE redeeming quality of plastic fibres was supposed to be that they were EASY TO WASH#(the one time I would recommend paying attention to the care label is when the garment is very structured#or has a lining or interfacing or padded cups or some other element that might be a different type of fabric#which may shrink or expand at a different rate than the shell#in that case if you toss it in the machine it may lose structure or its shape in the process#also anything with natural fibres; anything that is very fragile from age or very delicate; or anything that says 'DRY CLEAN ONLY'#I WOULD hand wash in cold#and if the care label says 'hang to dry' or 'lie flat to dry' there's really no reason not to)#(also if you're hand washing in cold always hang to dry.)#(this has been Back To School Life Tips With Mary Pea Soup)

Even when she's fending off hunger pangs, Helena's got a weak spot for the sexy brash alternative girls (bonus points if they're named Lilith).
Previous / Next
Chapter 4: The Art of Dark Meditation
Helena, thinking: You are not hungry. You are not hungry. You are not h-
[stomach grumbles loudly]
I guess it's back to the drawing board.
-
Julia: Whoa. Where ya off to looking like that?
Helena: Ugh, do I look ridiculous? Is my makeup awful?
Julia: No, you actually kinda look like a million bucks. No more migraine?
Helena: It's under control for now.
Julia: Wait! You didn't answer my question.
Helena: Maybe because it's none of your business. Keep out of trouble, kiddo, and don't stay up past your bedtime.
Julia: But-
Helena: Don't make me call a babysitter.
-
Darling: Helena! You managed to track me down. Guess I owe you that free drink now, huh?
Helena: Oh, I really don't need-
Lilith (Pleasant): One more round, Dar?
Darling: Another round of EAPAs coming up! I'll make you the cocktail of your dreams once I'm finished here, H.
Helena: [stealing discreet glances] No worries. I can wait.
[indistinct conversation]
Darling: Helena, you've barely even touched it! Are my mixology skills that hopeless? I've been practicing!
Helena: Sorry. It's great. I'm just a little... distracted.
Darling: [chuckles] Yeah, that's obvious.
Helena: Who is she? I thought I knew everyone in this place.
Darling: She's new in town, I think. Looks like a tough nut to crack but seems nice enough. Good tipper at least. God, what is her name? I think it's...
Lilith: [faintly overheard] Well, I should pack it in or I'll hate myself in the morning.
Helena: Thanks for the drink, but I've got to go.
Darling: What's with you and the hasty exits these days? [sighs resignedly] Well, good luck chasing down your new lady.
#ts4#sims 4#ts4 story#sims 4 story#simblr#story: hzid#helena zhao#julia zhao#darling walsh#lilith pleasant#that IS ulrike's leather jacket aka the breakup jacket#she felt too awkward asking for it back and helena said i am gonna RECLAIM this garment and get laid and fed in one go#will it work?#that is yet to be determined#(i always like to do townie cameos for fun when i can#and i thought lilith seemed like helena's type#then the humor of her unknowingly finding someone else with THAT NAME sealed the deal lol)#anyway i was gonna try to fit this entire sequence into one post but AS USUAL that turned out to be unrealistic#the rest is done though! i just have to edit!

in case you didnt know, being vegan means you should only wear pleather. if you wear anything else but plastic then youre not actually vegan, silly!
theres no other clothing options, actually. theres no such thing, dont be ridiculous. theres only animal skin/fur/feathers/wool and pleather.
historically, humans have not worn any other type of garment.
(sarcasm)
#vegan#veganism#even before i was vegan i didnt buy leather jackets and wool garments#i was freezing nearly to death every winter because we havent invented any other type of clothing

Misinformation I burned to death several times as a teenager due to the long skirts I wore
sounds legit
just like how I've literally snapped in half while wearing a corset, every single time, and now my midsection is held together by a complex network of zipties
(in all seriousness, before anyone starts in with the Um Actuallys, yes your clothing can catch fire if it's too near an open flame. but I seldom see anyone talking about the 18th- or 19th-century fire risks of frock coats, tailcoats, capes, long sleeves, long scarves- I nearly caught a perfectly normal blouse sleeve on fire once while frantically trying to unplug a sparking extension cord at the museum -or indeed anything that's not a primarily feminine-coded garment)
(so...)
(also obviously Wool Smolders, You Tend To Be Better At Fire Safety If Fire Is An Unavoidable Part Of your Daily Life, Show Me The Reliable Primary Source Death Statistics; I'm Waiting, etc.)
#ask#anon#bad history#pop history#'Fanny Longfellow died because her hoop skirt caught fire!' she dropped a match IN HER LAP#OR BRUSHED IT AGAINST HER SLEEVE (accounts vary)#ANY GARMENT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE#and as for blaming any individual garment...it's like how skirts are hampering and impossible to move in until#one brings up ancient Rome or Scotland or any other society wherein men wore skirt-type garments#I don't see any historical fiction where Caesar envies the Gauls their trousers and is presented as Objectively Correct for doing so

nam et quintus titius ait scire se quendam senatorem muliebribus cenatoriis uti solitum, qui si legaret muliebrem vestem, non videretur de ea sensisse, qua ipse quasi virili utebatur. (Dig. 34.2.33)
"For Quintus Titius also says that he knows of a certain senator who was accustomed to use women's dinner-dress, and if he were to bequeath "women's clothes" [in his will], it wouldn't be clear what he intended about the clothes he himself wore as if they were men's clothing."
#feel like there's a 70% chance that tumblr's like. yeah yeah the certain senator accustomed to women's dress we all know him.#nothing gives me the faint nostalgic nausea of too much latin like reading the digests#(i think the unsexy & obscured overall sense here is about whether “muliebrem vestem” ought be legally understood#as “femme clothing”—types of garment—or “women's clothes”—clothing presently belonging to/in use by women#specifically in the case of wills and legacies.#dont you wish you took roman law with me)#qtd (in painful translation) in Masculinity & Dress in Roman Antiquity (Olson). where i was just looking for something about jewellery.#i've got no notes on this specific Quintus Titius. “cenatoriis” is post-Augustan? but idk how close the wording is.

alsoooo genuine prediction: crochet out knitting in
#i think people will start to realize that knitting is better for certain types of garments and start learning to knit#already i’m seeing a LOT of knitting machine content i predict much more of it in the future#this may be an observation of the crest of the wave rather than a prediction of it but…that’s okay

Her ‘scribbling suit’ consisted of a black woolen pinafore on which she could wipe her pen at will, and a cap of the same material, adorned with a cheerful red bow, into which she bundled her hair when the decks were cleared for action. This cap was a beacon to the inquiring eyes of her family, who during these periods kept their distance, merely popping in their heads semi-occasionally to ask, with interest, “Does genius burn, Jo?” They did not always venture even to ask this question, but took an observation of the cap, and judged accordingly. If this expressive article of dress was drawn low upon the forehead, it was a sign that hard work was going on, in exciting moments it was pushed rakishly askew, and when despair seized the author it was plucked wholly off, and cast upon the floor.
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott
Thinking about that post saying that we have to acknowledge Jo's femininity in addition to her masculinity and this emphasis on a close connection between her clothes and her creativity feels like a good contribution to that!
#louisa may alcott#little women#jo march#lately i can only write if i have some head garment to fiddle with and create a cozy brain environment which reminded me of this passage#anyway in a writing life so saturated with emily's quest-type angst lately it was nice to revisit some of lw#really need to do a full reread soon#maybe a book club?#let me know if anyone is interested in a book club for the autumn!
