Ty Segall @ Gothic Theatre, Denver 5/9/24
Words by Santiago Beltran,
Button down fan art by Paula Beltran (see the blouse at work at Ty's DC concert here.)
After a somewhat quiet year or two for songwriting sensation Ty Segall, as well as the departure of his longtime lineup The Freedom Band, fans were left speculating which direction his new live setup would go in. Any worries were settled once his long awaited tour commenced late last year and the new four piece was unveiled.
During the ‘23-‘24 tour, eager fans have been consistently treated to a healthy portion of his outstanding new studio outing, ‘Three Bells’- even being played in its entirety early in the tour. Three Bells easily stands as one of, if not his most provocative and ambitious album in many years, which is saying a whole lot for a man of his musical stature. Intricate, psychedelic arrangements abound from beginning to end without losing his trademark raucous and heavy edge. It’s not a bit surprising that even such a lauded songwriter is sufficiently proud of this new work to lay it all out onstage at every stop on the tour.
At the Denver stop, the smattering of Three Bells selections got some welcome deviations off some of his most classic and timeless albums such as the fan favorite ‘Melted’- including the title song as well as ‘Love Fuzz’ and ‘Imaginary Person’. Even a rare muggers-era appearance of the undeniably fun and goofy ‘Breakfast Eggs’ reared its head.
The momentous, revelatory and now iconic ‘My Lady’s on Fire’ closed out the night , rounding out a deeply satisfying long awaited set in the mile high city.
This is a man that really makes it look way too easy to reach such great heights on stage and off. Ty continues his tour with an extensive Europe haul for the duration of the summer.

Californian Hills by Ty Segall from Emotional Mugger (2016)
I met the candy queens
I met the court, they’re so mean
Sound the Dionysus bell
Send them all back to hell
American nightmare
Guilty generation
Fingers on the pulse of their parents’ alienation
From the history, histories of Western civilization
The gift of affluent life
Was wasted on the fickle wife
Who slept in Californian hills
And gave herself the sleeping pills
And waits for the dollar bills
The papers say we’re going to hell

Album Review: Ty Segall - First Taste
Album Review: Ty Segall – First Taste
Words: Ben Forrester
Bar one year out of eleven, Ty Segall has been annual in his album release output. This is not to mention all the other bands, collabs and EP’s he’s put out in between, the man is a machine. For the past three years we’ve had a new record every January, but following last year’s mammoth 19 track effort ‘Freedom’s Goblin‘ you can excuse Ty for taking a little more time to…

Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin “Reverse Shark Attack” In the Red Records (reissued in 2012, originally pressed by Kill Shaman Records, 2009). Heavily fuzzed, psychedelic noisy garage punk and it’s so so good. Side A is jam-packed with seven fairly short, punchy and loud tracks; my favorites are “Wear Black,” “Drop Dead Baby,” “Doctor Doctor” and “Bikini Babes” (that last one so excellently 60′s psych-garage inspired) -- all are totally danceable. Also great is Segall and Cronin’s cover of Pink Floyd’s 1967 “Take Up Thy Stethescope and Walk” - it’s completely insane. Side B has just one very long song, the title track “Reverse Shark Attack” which is just as nuts: distorted vocals, 60′s pop melodies, loping to crashing rhythms, abrupt tempo changes and general psychedelic freak-outs. Segall and Cronin grew up together in Laguna Beach, California (Cronin was born in ‘85 and Segall in ‘87) and while Segall is now probably the better known of the pair, Cronin’s resume is pretty impressive: he’s been in Segall’s backing band (working on Slaughterhouse, Emotional Mugger, Ty Segall and Freedom’s Goblin), Thee Oh Sees (on Drop), Okie Dokie and others besides issuing four of his own solo albums.

This first ever look at TY SEGALL AND THE FREEDOM BAND at a secret show at The Griffin in Los Feliz might be the best fuckin show I’ve ever seen. Almost everything they played (including this song) WON’T even be on his self titled album that’s coming out at the end of this month on Drag City Records.
The songs were heavy AND technical af prog rock and my jaw was on the floor almost the entire show. Check it.
