Inspired by a conversation I recently had with friends, here is my “The JellyCat Orca Is Trans Masc and Non-Binary” theory.

One Piece chapter 1096 review

I knew it. I knew we'd be coming back to God Valley later. I feel vindicated for not getting my hopes up too high. Oda does a great job of building up what a massive convergence of big names it was, even if we only get a prelude here. At least the fanbase seems to be taking this blueballing better than they did the similar fastforwarding in Kaido's flashback last year.

Oda takes the chance to show off what he does best here, introducing a ton of striking one-off character designs for the Holy Knights (very interested in the one with the bull's skull for a headpiece), the nobles participating in the hunt (with Mannmeyer dropped as potentially the tenth of twenty Celestial Dragon family names) and the various pirate and marine crews coming to fight.

The World Government's dystopia is in full swing here, with emphasis placed on not even the children being spared, and the cruel lie of salvation in three week's time. While Ivankov is right about false hope being a useful tool for keeping the spark of life alive in prey, I think he misses its perhaps more pertinent utility of pacifying the fodder to prevent exactly the kind of operation Ivan's group pulls off. People with hope of things working out don't take matters into their own hands. People with other options, even slim ones, wouldn't gamble on a million to one shot of successfully raiding the Most Dangerous Game's prize pool. If you hear there will be some survivors, your point of view as the protagonist of your own life tells you that the story can't end here, that you must end up in that small number for things to go on. I don't think humans are inclined to really see themselves losing a death lottery while other options still exist, even if the odds are against us. A shame we can't all have an Ivan to guide us from the 0% chance the powers that be said was a 3% chance to the 1% chance that is the actual only hope.

Garp's presence in this chapter is something I'm torn on. I can't get a read on if he knows the full details of what the Celestial Dragons are really doing, if he thinks it's just some inspection or pleasure trip for them. If he suspects only that it's not good but maintains a plausible deniability of what to keep himself from acting out. I love Garp as a character, but he's always been a protector and enforcer of this world's most heinous systems despite his sympathetic motivations. And in these days when Roger is his rival, you would think this is Garp at his most wild and rebellious and willing to disobey orders, but he'd still rather face Roger than deal with the slave hunt.

Maybe if he knew what monsters the Five Elders really were he'd actually be interested in measuring his strength against theirs.

Remember in chapter 957 that right before talking about the teamup at God Valley Sengoku is reflecting on how much Garp's personal moral compass disagrees with the Celestial Dragons and how close he's come to being eliminated for insubordination. I think we're edging closer to the full picture here, and I hope that's not just my enjoyment of Garp's character talking.

yes of course!! i love answering questions like i said i have lots of thoughts, head full and Such. especially about my ocs and mlynar because he's blorbo from my games. god i woke up today and i'm counting down the events til he's Here and i Have Him.

i do have a couple more arknights ocs (i have ocs in other things lol but. arknights is the focus.) they're less developed outright than shealtiel.

i'm leaving shealtiel's story where it is for the moment until we have an update on what andoain is doing, then i'll probably tweak it to move with that. i do think that he's not going to get what he wants, because i don't think he's going to get to help kill andoain given how arknights handles characters like ando, but he's going to be better off for not getting it.

as for my other ocs, i have my doctor, who is in stasis because i don't like being wildly wrong about lore. but the sparknotes is that their name is taki, they're divorced from kal'tsit, they're four foot nine and their abilities include seeing branching timelines from their decisions, which is responsible for their tactics. the Doctor Visor helps them filter it all out, which is why they rarely take it off in actual situations or important (plot-relevant) conversations. however, it was made before the sarcophagus, so it's a little loose and it falls down a bit sometimes. for now they're a fennec vulpo because i love fennec foxes. i realize this makes two of my arknights characters vulpos, but this is unsurprising, because foxes are part of my Brand.

second fox is a self-indulgent one. audr "audie" fuchsfrost is arctic fox + from a minor family in kjerag. i made him because i think silverash is hot and i wanted to make an ocship about it. bottom text. audie seems very unassuming and cute and sociable, but he also has a pragmatic side that keeps encio guessing and is always a pleasant surprise for audie's partner. arranged marriage to actual lovers because they realize they have a lot in common. i said this was self-indulgent, didn't i. "this is my husband, enciodes, and this is his boyfriend, gnosis."

last one is still in the oven, but i've been working on a kazimierz bounty hunter's guild oc, a banshee sarkaz called enka or "howl". she grew up with the guild. has vocal Arts. is an absolute raccoon of a woman. i think they found her in the garbage. i've kind of been marinating on her the last couple of days but she's the newest addition, so, there's not too much there yet.

Despite what you might think, there are decently reasonable people that are just tired of everything being socially and politically motivated and just want the product to be better. The quickest way to lose these people will be to echo that same mentality. There will always be more of them, than you. So DON’T. Again, Doing so for GW would be failure on their part, so it’s a failure here for you too. B) You DO NOT get to cherry pick “outdated” lore for your justification. With one final drag of his cigarette, Samatoki finished off his pack and extinguished the bud in their shared clay ashtray. Sasara had insisted the two should do more couple like dates that didn’t involve rap battling punks off the streets, so they took a one off pottery class together. That damn comedian looked so proud of the lopsided tray he made, even made lil cigarette slots on the ridges too, how could he not want to keep it? 

“Don’t get me wrong you’re smoking hot in the moonlight but bring your ash to bed!”

Rolling his eyes at the puns, Samatoki moves away from the window and crashes himself beside his boyfriend. Instinctively, the two move closer, huddled against one another, faces inches apart. Sasara opens his mouth to speak, but is stopped almost immediately by the yakuza, there was no way he was going to let him ruin this moment with another shitty pun. “I love how I can make you shut up by kissing you literally whenever I want”

Leaves crunch under his feet as Samatoki rushes through the wood, carefully weaving through the camouflaged traps. He never understood how bandits were able to make their way to Rio so easily with them around when it took him almost a month to have a memorized path. He skids to a halt when he makes it to the clearing of Rios camp, eyes surveying the area around him before landing on him. It seems the emergency call may have been an overstatement after seeing how unshaken the ex-marine seemed tying up the passed out trespassers.

“I hope I didn’t alarm you, it seems that the threat wasn’t as high as I thought” He claps his hands onto the sides of his thighs, whipping off the dirt from them before handing off their mics to his leader. “Just another raid for my mic, they’re foolish to underestimate me. Forgive me for calling you out here for no reason, I’ll make us lunch in return” Samatoki shivers at the idea, but the smile on Rio’s face is enough to make him swallow his pride alongside whatever atrocity his boyfriend had planned.

“Tch, don’t worry about it, calling me wasn’t a waste of time. Y’know, if anyone messes with you again I’ll lay them out then and there.”

Out on the town, arms linked, Ramuda dragged Samatoki to every store with a pretty glass display, occasionally pointing out his own brand when he saw it. While Samatoki could enjoy the clothing, although his personal preference being vintage, he couldn’t say the same now. The stylist had brought the two into a sickeningly pink store that specialized in stuffed animals and other cutesy goods.

“Oh, Sama look! Aren’t they cute, kinda like us~!”

He looks over Ramuda’s shoulder and to the pair of stuffed animals he was excitedly fawning over. Two small bears, one pink and the other white, leaning on one another with Velcro paws so they could hold hands. Samatoki’s eyes move from the bears to Ramuda, who was already getting into position to plead with him to buy them. “Sama... can you pwease~!” 

He rolls his eyes, letting out a soft ‘tch’ before grabbing the plushies. “Oh piss off with those puppy dog eyes you know I’ll do it for you” Ramuda jumps, cheering out loud as he follows his Sama to the checkout stand, he really needed to stop giving into those eyes or he’d be out of cash.

HifuGen

A long day at work meant that Hifumi had earned a long soak in the tub, after all he had so many new products his kittens have given him that he was excited to try! However, in a surprising twist of events, his stay at home princess was awake too and decided he would join him as well. Gentaro says that the only reason he was awake was because of deadlines and absolutely not because he wanted to see Hifumi.

“I don’t think so. Bubbles are for children”

Already, they had run into their first problem and the water hasn’t even started yet. Hifumi pouts, puffing out his cheeks, grabbing at the bottle Gentaro took from him. “Awh, c’mon Gen! This is the expensive kind, it’s made with honey and it smells super gooooood~! Smell it!” The blond tears the bottle from his hands before opening it and stirring the wand around in it before bringing it to Gentaros face. His face winces back, before carefully moving the stick aside and glaring back at Hifumi.

“It smells like food, you know I don’t like food scented anything” With a sad sigh, he puts the bubble bath aside, no bubble bath for the bubbly champagne host tonight... The hot water spills from the tap and the two huddle together under the hot water silently, it was calming. 

“Okay, but can I use a bath bomb instead?!”

Ichiro jumps slightly in his spot as a loud knock echoes through the quiet house, he furrows his brows before pausing his show and grabbing his phone. 2:28 AM. This better be important. Standing up, he saunters over to the door and peeks through the peephole, seeing the familiar mess of blue hair. Sighing, he rubs his eyes of sleep and unlocks the door and is welcomed to the rest of Dice. “Dude, what are you doing here so late?”

Dice moves past Ichiro, almost rushing into the kitchen, already grabbing at the snacks he knows his boyfriend wont mind him eating. “I’ve been on a nonstop losing streak, thought I’d swing by and see my lucky charm!” Which also meant to eat as much as he can and to sleep on something that wasn’t a park bench for one night. After a minute, Dice waddles out from the kitchen, dropping various bags and containers on the coffee table but before he could sit down Ichiro had stopped him with a hand on his back.

“Oh, hell no! You are taking a bath before sitting on my couch and grab some clothes from my room, your jacket smells like a pachinko parlor ash tray”

Dice groans and nods before trudging his way to the bathroom, littering the hall with clothes as he gets undressed on the way there. Ichiro picks up the trail behind him, already taking it to the house washing machine. After that he’s gonna reheat some left overs because theres no way in hell he was gonna let Dice leave tomorrow after a dinner of just Funyuns and Cheetos. 

HifuDo

Hifumi had left the house hours ago to run some errands, so now it was a race against the clock. Doppo had to bake and decorate the cake he had planned for the twos anniversary. It wasn’t anything too fancy, not like he had the skill to pull anything like that off, but still he wanted to work with what he could do! The instructions on the back seemed easy enough, idiot proof... right? Doppos hands shake as he whisks the batter, knuckles white from squeezing the handle so tightly, he just wanted to be sure he got all the clumps. What if he just happened to be the one idiot that couldn’t do it?

Shakily, he pours the battle into a basic circle cake tray and into the already preheated oven, he learned preheating after helping Hifumi for a day. Once the tray was in all that was left was to wait, which to Doppo was the scariest part by far... What if he waited too long? What if he didn’t wait long enough? WHAT IF HE GAVE HIFUMI SALMONELLA??? Panic setting in, his eyes dart around the kitchen, from the oven to the timer then to the boxes instructions, did it seriously only take a fifteen minutes to cook a cake?

He jumps from his spot, clutching his heart from the sudden noise when the timer finally does go off. Oven off and gloves on, the cake pan comes out easy, even if the thought of taking it out did scare him at first. Now he had to let it sit for another ten, he can do this, this cake will come out great and Hifumi will be so proud of him! While he waits the time out he mixes the frosting, and grabs the sprinkles to decorate it all! 

Again, the timer goes off and Doppo moves to tap the cake out of the mold, but after a few hits, it doesn’t budge. Confused for only a brief second until it hits him. HE FORGOT TO GREASE UP THE PAN. Quickly, his hands shuffle through the drawers before pulling out a butter knife and slicing it out... it was a disaster, there were holes at the top where he couldn’t cut properly. Only he could have managed this, only he could be an ingenious enough idiot to fail something idiot-proof then his eyes fall on the decorations again.

     The Mac Eanraig Institute; a marine education and research facility. their overall goal was to gather information and expand oceanic knowledge. it was something that came naturally to this family, practically born at sea, to branch out into maritime professions. of course this was a quality that came with associates occasionally comparing them to literary legends of the sea.

     however myths, fairy tales, magical beings.... they weren't real, right? they're just some flight of fancy to pacify children; parlor tricks and tall tales for entertainment. nothing fully solidified in fact yet simplified and explained with science and strenuous research. inconsequential distractions.

     eleanor mac eanraig knows this but as of late the biologist has nearly consumed herself in unexplainable revelations. strange readings from seismographs and recording interference. it didn't make sense and yet most of her research leaning up to this point leaned more on fantasy than science. 

          ❛ ellie would you listen to yourself... ❜   bernard, the eldest would try to act as some form of reason.

     ❝ look, i know what it sounds like, but i'm not crazy. there's something here! ❞   she insists despite her brother's concern.   ❝ somehow it's messing with our equipment and i'm gonna find it. with or without your help. ❞

     eleanor checks and double checks her equipment, displays, basically anything to delay the inevitable. she tells herself everything is going to be fine. that it's probably nothing. repeats it while starting the vessel and easing it passed the break. murmurs it still getting into her wetsuit and testing her oxygen tank. it finally settles into her thoughts as she dives into the water. 

     she mentally counts the fathoms in her descent, ever so often checking her equipment to make sure things are adding up. a few minor hiccups with the electronics but so far so good.

          until it wasn’t.  

     so lost in her search, randomly documenting any findings, eleanor nearly misses the beeping of her depleting air. frantic she checks her gauges, her watch. she couldn’t have been down that long. however, it’s hard to tell considering there were no readings, nothing was working.

          shit

     little time to panic, she has to get to the surface. with any remaining energy, eleanor heads upward. gradually, she sees the sunlight above getting ever closer yet the seizing hold upon her chest hits first.  don't panic. don't think about it. just keep goi..ng ... u p.  her mind is still willing yet her body cannot respond. her lungs ache and burn for release, kicks become weaker, the light above flickers and dims and she witnesses her own descent.

     i shouldn't have gone by myself.             ... god damnit, i hate when bernard's right.      now i'm gonna die because of a wild goose chase.            well, it's not like a watery grave is so far removed...      way to be on brand, elle.

     at the last bit she actually manages a rather bittersweet smile in these final moments, body slowly drifting downward towards the ocean floor...
