A cute and colorful picture book, featuring a family preparing for a visit and a cat who does not want to be bathed. As the afternoon wears on, and the family tries to follow the list of chores laid out in magnetic letters, the cat finds himself in more and more chaotic situations as he rearranges words and letters to avoid the terrible B-A-T-H.

Justification:
Alright, I’ll admit it; I’m a sucker for rainbows. My attention was drawn immediately by the bright colors and fun, round art, and when I realized that the family in the book is depicted as two dads—not something I see a lot in children’s books!—I decided I had to pick it up. This is another one of those books I saw circulating a lot at the beginning of the fall as parents tried to pick up everything on the 2x2 list, and I was excited to actually take it home for myself. (It took two tries; my hold ran out too quickly the first time and, of course, had to go somewhere else right away.)
Evaluation:
For this review, I will be evaluating illustrations, tone, and language. David Roberts’ illustrations are colorful, bright and appealing. The verso page indicates that Roberts used pencil and watercolor to create these images, and while I’m sure some digital manipulation was used to perfect them, the precision and detail Roberts achieves with those two tools is astonishing. There’s a level of care to the illustrations that genuinely touches my heart; the family’s fridge has three pride flag magnets (the Inclusive Pride flag, the trans flag, and the agender flag), the narrator’s watch accurately shows the time as it advances through the story, and the detail in textures like Dad’s pants and Sarah’s hair is incredibly impressive. These illustrations are fun to look at for children and adults. The tone, meanwhile, is fun and playful. McGinty’s purpose is to entertain, not to overtly educate—the entire book is a game! The narrator’s frustration comes through in the illustrations, and while the text uses capital letters to express that feeling, it’s still more funny than anything else. I think, though, that the most educational or developmental value in this book is probably found in its language. The plot of the story revolves around words moving around, and the funny results of such a mix-up; it’s a great way to help kids learn words, especially verbs, since they can see what those verbs mean (and how silly it is to apply them to the wrong things). On the whole, the language of the book is simple and accessible, without being condescending or overly simplified. I loved this book. I loved this book. I absolutely added this to my list of books to get my children one day, and I’d recommend it to parents who are reading one-on-one to their children; it might not be a good public storytime book, though, just because it’s a little too long and complex for a group of toddlers to follow.

Buck & Eddie: Young Buck and Christopher -Parallels
Chris looks like Buck; they have the same hair color and type (blonde/brown and curly) and they both have blue eyes.  If someone didn’t know them and they saw Buck, Eddie and Chris together, it would be easy for them to assume that Buck is Chris’ biological father.  It’s clearly not a coincidence that Chris looks like Buck and Buck looks like Bobby because Bobby is Buck’s found dad and Buck is Chris’ second dad/legal guardian.
In addition to them looking alike, Buck’s and Chris’ lives parallel in a lot of other ways too.  Several of Chris’ experiences have been direct parallels with Young Buck’s experiences and their clothing was either identical or similar with minute differences like the color of their shirts or the length of their shirts’ sleeves. Whenever Chris’ experiences were direct parallels to Young Buck’s; Buck was present with Eddie or by himself in the role of Chris’ second dad.
It’s interesting there were multiple Young Buck scenes included in 4x5 but there haven’t been any Young Eddie scenes included in any episodes over the past four and a half years even though there were opportunities for them to be included in 3x15 “Eddie Begins” and in 5x17 “Hero Complex”.  If there wasn’t enough time in 3x15, there was plenty of time in 5x17 when Eddie went to El Paso, TX because there were opportunities for at least two flashback scenes of Young Eddie to have been included in that episode but there weren’t any.  One flashback could have been included when Eddie explained the way Ramon told him to be the “man of the house” at the age of 10.  Or they could have included a flashback of Young Eddie trying to drive Ramon’s truck after Helena went into labor but no scenes were included regarding that instance either.
Karen told Hen in 5x17, “Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence and three times is a pattern” and Athena told Eddie in 6x7 “Cursed”, “You know what I believe in even less than a curse? Coincidence”. Therefore it’s probably not a coincidence that Chris looks like Buck and a lot of their childhood experiences including the clothing they wore are parallels.  It’s not a coincidence that Buck was present for Chris’ experiences that paralleled with his and it’s also not a coincidence that there haven’t been any childhood scenes of Eddie included in episodes that were about him.  It appears these parallels are patterns because they keep happening.  Will there be more parallels of Buck and Chris in 6B? Only the showrunner(s), writers and producers know the answer to that question.
Parallels – Clothing and Experiences
GIFs 1 & 2: Young Buck’s and Chris’ shirts were both long sleeved and striped when Buck was learning to ride a bike for the first time but he fell off and got injured while Chris was with Buck on the pier before the Tsunami hit.  Buck’s shirt in 4x5 “Buck Begins” was blue with yellow, navy and light blue stripes while Chris’ shirt in 3x2 “Sink or Swim” was yellow with blue, brown and white stripes.
GIFs 3 & 4: Young Buck’s and Chris’ t-shirts were identical in style but they were different colors.  Buck’s t-shirt in 4x5 was navy blue with a red collar and red sleeves while Chris’ t-shirt in 2x2 “7.1” was blue/gray with a green collar and green sleeves. Buck wasn’t present when Eddie took Chris to school before the earthquake but Buck drove Eddie to pick Chris up from school at the end of 2x3 “Help is Not Coming” and Chris was still wearing the same shirt.
GIFs 5 & 6: Young Buck and Chris both wanted to learn how to skateboard, they both got injured during the process and their shirts were similar.  Buck’s shirt in 4x5 was gray with navy blue and white stripes and it was short sleeved while Chris’ shirt in 3x12 “Fools” was red with black and white stripes with long sleeves.  Both Eddie and Buck were at the park after they built Chris an adaptable skateboard so that he could ride it.
GIFs 7 & 8: In 4x5, Young Buck’s hair was long blonde and curly and he wore a gray t-shirt underneath his blue jacket while in 5x11 “Outside Looking In” Chris’ hair was also long brown/blonde and curly and his t-shirt was gray too.  Buck was sitting across the table from Eddie and Chris while they were eating dinner.
GIFs 9 & 10: Young Buck’s hair was long, blonde and curly in 4x5 and Chris’ hair in 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia” was still long, blonde/brown and curly.  Chris called Buck while Eddie was having a mental breakdown and Buck rushed over to Eddie’s house.  After he arrived, he checked on Chris first then he broke down Eddie’s bedroom door and entered to help him.
GIFs 11 & 12: Young Buck wore a blue t-shirt in 4x5 while he ate cereal and Chris wore a navy blue-t-shirt while he ate cereal for breakfast in 4x14 “Survivors” as he sat across the table from his second dad, Buck.  Buck was taking care of Chris while Eddie was in the hospital.
GIFs 13 & 14: Young Buck was upset after Maddie told him she was leaving in 4x5, his t-shirt was gray and he got on his bike and left because he was upset. Chris’ t-shirt was light blue in 4x8 “Breaking Point” and he became upset after Eddie told him that he was dating again.  Chris did the same thing Buck did in 4x5, he left and went to Buck’s loft because he thought someone was going to leave him again. Both Buck and Chris left when they were upset.
GIF 15: Buck and Chris wore the same color shirts (Buck wore a white t-shirt and a blue button-down with grey stripes in it and Chris wore a gray t-shirt with white stripes and blue sleeves) in 6x1 “Let the Games Begin” while Eddie wore a tan shirt which is one of his signature colors that he wears when he’s with his family.

USB 2 had an issue that the leap in bandwidth was well known to consumers but the data rate names weren't. Backward compatibility meant that a Low Speed device could be advertised as USB 2, and a Full Speed device as USB 2 Full Speed, but neither would have anything close to the performance expected by most people.
Hubs, whether stand-alone or built into a device such as a PC they might have multiple transaction translators to allow a mix of connected devices to each run at their maximum speed or might just have a single transaction translator and force all connected devices to operate at the speed of the slowest.
I don’t think it is reasonable for consumers to keep track of all the USB 3 naming schemes. At least the separate wires for USB 2 and 3 has helped with hubs (I think).
Physical Layer
Data rates (including overhead, ie available bandwidth is lower):
Low Speed (1.5Mb/s), Full Speed (12Mb/s): Differential signal without line termination carried over (typically) unshielded twisted pair.
High Speed (480Mb/s): Similar to the above but lower voltage and terminated lines.
SuperSpeed (5Gb/s), SuperSpeed+ (10Gb/s): Differential signals over shielded pairs.
Connectors:
USB 1.x-2.0 A/B/Mini-A/Mini-B/Mini-AB/Micro-A/Micro-B/Micro-AB: One Low/Full/High Speed lane. A is master, B is slave, AB is either.
USB 3.0 A/B/Micro-B: A and B look similar to previous versions but have extra pins to add two SuperSpeed lanes, spec suggests they be blue. Micro-B is wider than previous version. High Speed lane is still around on original pins and used for configuration. USB 3 protocol uses one lane for transmit and the other for receive.
USB-C: Four lanes for SuperSpeed+, one lane for High Speed using four pins with those diagonally opposite connected on the devices to make one reversible pair.
USB-C Alternate Modes
New versions of USB have made it explicit that the connector and protocol are separate, and the USB-C connector can be used with a variety of protocols:
USB 2: Not really a mode, carried over separate wires.
USB 3: Originally used one SuperSpeed+ lane at half or full speed for transmit and another for receive; another USB 3 could be used to connect to eg a hub which split them but they couldn't be bonded. USB 3.2 added ability to use two lanes in each direction for a single connection.
DisplayPort: DP 1.4 over 1, 2, or 4 SuperSpeed+ lanes.
MHL: Uses 1, 2, or 4 SuperSpeed+ lanes.
Thunderbolt 3: Uses all 4 SuperSpeed+ lanes, for two 20Gb/s signals. It needs an active cable if more than 0.5m long.
HDMI
VirtualLink: Uses DisplayPort 1.4 over the four SuperSpeed+ lanes usually provided by USB-C. The four wires normally used for High Speed are instead used for SuperSpeed+ to allow the USB 3.0 (or whatever your preferred name is for this at 10Gb/s) rather than USB 2 , ie shielding is added for these and pairs aren't tied together on the devices. For direct connection between PC and VR headset, can't use hubs.
Audio Adapter Accessory: This isn't really an Alternate Mode - it uses a different mechanism, holding the Configuration Channel to ground rather than sending a code. Analog with all digital signals disabled. Distinct from the Audio Device Class for external DACs. Left and Right channels are doubled up on the pins normally used for High Speed (USB 2) so the connector is reversible. Microphone and Audio Ground need to be swappable, similar to TRRS where there is no agreement on which way around these go.
Power
5V:
Originally a "Low-power device" could get 0.5W and a "High-power device" 2.5W.
USB 3 increased those to 0.75W and 4.5W respectively.
USB-C allows 15W.
USB Battery Charging 1.x allows 7.5W.
USB Battery Charging 2.3 allows 25W.
Apple does their own thing at up to 10W.
Audio Adapter Accessory Mode only allows 2.5W as the Configuration Channel pins are grounded so negotiating higher current or voltage isn't possible.
USB Power Delivery:
Version 1 allowed 5V at 2A (10W). Micro connectors could have 12V at 1.5 or 3A, or 20V at 3A. Full size connectors could do the same, and also 12 or 20V at 5A. Maximum power transfer was therefore 60W for micro connectors or 100W for full size.
Version 2 was introduced alongside USB 3 and USB C, for 5/9/15/20V with more flexibility of the current up to the same maximums.
Version 3 is for programmable power supplies with 20mV steps and the same maximums.
Other
USB devices can send a code to identify their class so that the host can use a generic driver. Well known ones include Human Interface Device (keyboard/mouse/joystick) and Mass Storage but there are many other USB device classes.
USB 4 is expected soon, mid 2019, and to include Thunderbolt.

Eddie Diaz is an awesome dad!
Eddie is an awesome dad who will do anything for his son Christopher.  He left El Paso, TX after his parents tried to convince him to leave Chris with them but he relocated to Los Angeles, CA. He moved so that he could give himself and his son a fresh start. Eddie bought a house and he had a familial support system in his abuela Isabel and his aunt Pepa because they were already living in L.A. He attended the LAFD academy and after he graduated at the top of his class, several different firehouses wanted to recruit him.
He’s sacrificed so much for Chris including quitting his job in 2021 right before Christmas because Chris was scared Eddie would get hurt again or worse he could die while working as a firefighter.  He does his very best to be there for his son and he works hard to provide for him.  Eddie is an awesome dad and he’s demonstrated how awesome he is as Chris’ dad for years.
2x2 “7.1” – Eddie took Chris to school before he went to work.
2x4 (2) “Stuck” – Eddie got ready for work while Chris got ready for school.
3x4 “Triggers” – Eddie comforted Chris after he had a nightmare about his mother.
3x13 “Fools” – Eddie had a conversation with Chris about skateboarding after Chris fell off one of his classmate’s skateboards while he was at school.  Eddie explained to Chris that everyone has things they can’t do and he used himself as an example.  He explained how Chris’s science teacher told him how Chris was good at growing plants but Eddie admitted he wasn’t.
3x18 “What’s Next?” – Eddie and Chris attended May’s graduation party and Chris went away from home for two weeks to attend his first summer camp.
4x2 “Alone Together” – Eddie spent time with Chris while Carla read Chris a bedtime story on FaceTime.
5x6 “Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1” – After being held at gunpoint by an escaped convict, Eddie went home and spent time talking to his son.
5x10 (2) “Wrapped in Red” – Chris had a nightmare about his mother and Eddie rushed into his room after he heard him scream to check on him. Chris told Eddie he could be dead next year and Eddie quit the 118 so Chris wouldn’t have to worry about him.
5x11 “Outside Looking In” – After Eddie quit the 118, his new job wasn’t what he hoped it would be but he stuck it out so Chris didn’t have to worry about him.  Chris asked him if he missed being a firefighter and Eddie said he did.  During a conversation with Eddie, Chris told him he should return to firefighting and explained how it is scary sometimes but he could be brave.
5x14 “Dumb Luck” – Chris asked Eddie if he was one of the things that makes him sad and Eddie responded, “NEVER!”
6x4 (2) “Animal Instincts” – Eddie got a call from Chris’ school explaining that Chris had been skipping his science club meetings.  Eddie took away his video games but one night Chris waited until Eddie fell asleep and he played the games anyway.  Eddie listened to Chris when he said he didn’t want to be treated like a baby anymore and he reminded Chris that he couldn’t be disrespectful after he called Eddie a jerk.
6x7 “Cursed” – Eddie took Chris to his surfing lesson.
6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?” – Eddie helped Chris get ready for his first school dance and he waited outside of the school with Carla until the dance was over.  He was so proud of his son and he had tears in his eyes.

Renesas Introduces Two New Dual-Polarization 5G mmWave Beamformer ICs Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has expanded its 5G beamformer IC family with two new dual-polarization mmWave devices optimized for 2x2 antenna architecture for 5G and broadband wireless applications with best-in-class performance in the n257, n258, and n261 bands. The highly integrated F5288 and F5268 transmitter/receiver (8T8R) chipsets sit on a small 5.1 x 5.1mm BGA package and feature the industry’s highest Tx output power capability in silicon – delivering more than 15.5 dBm linear output power per channel. With this combination, Renesas enables cost-efficient radio design with extended signal reach for wireless infrastructure applications including wide-area, small cell and macro base stations, as well as CPE, fixed wireless access (FWA) access points, and various other applications.
The new F5288 and F5268 ICs use the unique Dynamic Array Power (DAP) technology to enable high-efficiency operation at linear output power levels programmable from 10 dBm up to 16 dBm. This makes the third-generation ICs ideal for use in mobile and fixed wireless applications with a wide range of output power requirements. This flexibility allows communications customers to reduce design times by repurposing their antenna array designs across different applications.
“Adequate signal range – or lack thereof – remains the biggest challenge as the industry shifts to 5G mmWave technologies for both urban and suburban mobile and fixed wireless networks,” said Naveen Yanduru, Vice President of RF Communications Product Division at Renesas. “Renesas’ new beamformer ICs are a game changer for this evolving market, offering small, integrated beamforming solutions with high output power that enable communications customers to implement cost-effective base station and FWA designs for long-range wireless applications.”
About the F5288 and F5268 5G mmWave Beamforming ICs
Renesas’ third-generation mmWave beamformer ICs address all the beamforming capabilities required by 5G systems while achieving the highest linear RF output power in any silicon technology with high efficiency.
The ICs’ dual-polarization 8-channel architecture provides a highly symmetric and very low loss antenna routing network to improve overall antenna efficiency and reduce board costs. The exposed die package allows for more efficient thermal management at the board with improved heat dissipation through the back of the IC. In addition, Renesas designed the package pin map to simplify board design and reduce design risks. Lower complexity PCB design with minimum layer counts results in reduced board costs and faster time to market.
The F5288 and F5268 ICs also feature several of Renesas’ state-of-the-art technologies to enhance array-level performance. Dynamic Array Power technology allows for a graceful scaling of output power with high efficiency. ArraySense technology with comprehensive on-chip sensor network allows users to monitor IC performance in array operation and apply critical corrections real-time. RapidBeam advanced digital control technology enables simultaneous synchronous and asynchronous control of several beamformer ICs to achieve extremely fast beam steering operations.
