it pounded out of him like a swell. there hadn't been anything that had penetrated him deep since la princesse in her striped tops silhouetting pointy perfect french breasts that didn't need a bra packed her louis vuitton luggage full of things that that once been strewn around the apartment that they shared. fighting wasn't something schlog had ever been skilled at, despite his german background, despite the fact that he had been a staunch believer in the ethics of the nazi party and even wore an arm band that spoke of it from time to time, and so when she started to rail against him, he sat on their yellow couch and started to prepare a joint. after swallowing the hashburning as a response for three years, she did what she said she was going to do, and filled the suitcase.
it had been two years since she walked out of 7, rue de l'aimant. after that, schlog’s life became a series of watching soccer (known as 'le fut'), drinking cheap beer, and walking to "l'arabe du coin" (arab on the corner/bodega) where he would buy his milk and not-so-fresh vegetables. people came in to his flat to share in his drugged-out state of mind, and left hours later. not once did a ladyfriend spend the night, or kiss him on the couch, because the female contingent of his smalltown knew that the door had been closed. it showed in the dullness of his friendly eyes, and closed lips.

that's why that day in place kléber was such a surprise to him. he was sitting there on a sunny saturday in july, trying his hand at jack kerouac's dharma bums, which he had just bought a day or two before at the used bookstand, and he was on his 2nd glass of Meteor. he had nothing to complain about, it was a nice way to spend a day of no work. suddenly he heard a female voice in a not altogether familiar accent address his vicinity, and he looked up.
"excusez-moi, mais....je l'ai vu."
"pardon?"
he had no idea what she was talking about. he tried to give her a polite smile.
"le wedding present. je l'ai vu, en concert." she seemed very shy and hesitant, and was not smiling.
on this day schlog was wearing the t-shirt he had gotten at a wedding present show at la laiterie. when he realized that this stranger was addressing his musical taste, his heart opened a little, as music was one of the things that made his eyes light up. in fact, secretly he dreamed of being a dj, but I digress. he invited her to sit down.
