Profiles of Pride: June 19th! 🏳️🌈Elle Hearns🏳️🌈
Elle Hearns (born 1986/1987) is an American transgender rights activist. She co-founded the Black Lives Matter Global Network, where she served as a strategic partner and organizing coordinator, and founded The Marsha P. Johnson Institute, where she serves as executive director.
Hearns was born in Columbus, Ohio. She grew up in a single-parent home with two sisters. She struggled being raised as a "little black boy who was existentially trapped in a boy’s body, but was definitely very much so female." Before discovering that she was transgender, she thought she was gay, and dealt with suicidal thoughts as she thought being gay was a sin.
Hearns was very interested in black power, and educated herself about Malcolm X and the civil rights movement. She became a youth organizer, and later attended Central State University, a historically black university in Wilberforce, Ohio.
In 2013, Hearns co-founded the Black Lives Matter Global Network. As a strategic partner and organizing coordinator, she helped develop policy for the network, including the 2016 policy platform "A Vision for Black Lives". She co-organized a National Day of Action in 2015 to bring attention to the black trans women who were killed that year.
In 2015, Hearns was one of the organizers of The Movement for Black Lives, a national three-day conference in Cleveland, Ohio.
Hearns founded The Marsha P. Johnson Institute, where she serves as executive director. The mission of the institute, which is set to launch in Spring 2018, is to train and support black trans women and gender-nonconforming femmes.
Hearns has also served as a coordinator for GetEQUAL and as an ambassador for the Trans Women of Color Collective (TWOCC). Her writings have been featured in publications including the City University of New York Law Review and Ebony.
In 2015, Hearns appeared on Democracy Now! and All Things Considered, discussing the shooting of Tamir Rice.
In February 2017, Hearns, along with other trans activists, criticized the pussyhat that had become a symbol of the 2017 Women's March, stating that the movement needs to be truly intersectional and consider the "anatomy of all people".
In August 2017, Hearns and fellow organizers at the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, along with other trans activists, spoke out against an episode of The Breakfast Club radio show where remarks were made about trans women. Comedian Lil Duval joked about killing a sex partner if she turned out to be transgender, and host Charlamagne Tha God, while noting that killing a trans person was a hate crime, stated that women not disclosing their trans status were "taking away a person's power of choice" and "should go to jail or something". Hearns and her colleagues circulated a petition calling for the program to be taken off the air.
On September 30, 2017, Hearns spoke at The March for Black Women in Washington, D.C. about the sisterhood between transgender and cisgender black women.

SPIRIT ROOTS 2.0: Free Readings Open!
I spent some time thinking about how to start doing free readings in a way that felt purposeful and meaningful for my communities. I realize that I want to become a community rootworker, someone who practices traditional African American hoodoo and divination for free to support our community and make a social impact.
I will be offering two types of free readings:
Need-based readings, for folks in urgent situations who need serious help or assistance via divination.
Impact readings, which are available for anyone willing to donate at least $5 to an organization that I support!
You can read more about how to request either of these free readings here! Please do not send me a reading request without following the instructions <3
Why not use divination as a tool to provide wisdom, support, and guidance, but also as a way to support our community? Every week, I will choose a different organization to boost and share with yall that I hope you will donate $5 or more to receive an Impact Reading! This week I want to highlight the Trans Women of Color Collective...
TWOCC exists to create revolutionary change by uplifting the narratives, leadership, and lived experience of trans people of color. Historically, trans women of color have been the catalyst of change for social justice movements, yet we continue to be impacted by structural oppression.
TWOCC is a one of a kind organizing collective that develops and amplifies the leadership of trans women of color to be the writers of our own narratives. We believe that the voices of those most impacted by structural oppression must be at the forefront of our movement.
Donate to the Trans Women of Color Collective!

{flag image via @ageofaquaria} jk rowling can suck it she’s been dead to me for years now for consistently being extremely problematic. no, this is not the first time. it’s not even the second or third time. yes, she was always this terrible. and no, i do not think she’s desirous of change. i will not share her words here. instead here are 8 organizations you can donate to and support black trans people {source: @mary.retta for @vice}. . . to quote @mary.retta, “black liberation will never be possible without uplifting and protecting black transgender people and communities.” . ———— find them on instagram at: @jprattlopez.photos @theokraproject @blacktranstravelfund @twoc_collective @emergency_release_fund @forthegworls . ———— . {#Repost @ageofaquaria} ・・・ “June is a time for Pride. Please don’t comment about how you prefer ur Pride flag with six colors. Please recognize that your Pride means nothing and would be nonexistent without Black lives. Please don’t be a corporation trying to include me in projects while you’ve remained silent on social media this past week and have not vocally supported your Black customers. Please listen to you Black LGBTQIA+ members and do only as they say. Do not bother them with questions though; the time has passed for white willful ignorance and stupidity. Use your resources. Support Pride by joining a protest if you’re healthy, donate to BLM funds/bailouts of protestors/etc. if you can (especially if you are a brand or public figure that continues to monetize elements of Black culture to pad your wallet) and if you are a non-Black member or ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, take this month (and beyond) and focus your energy on our Black members who began the fight for you and who have desperately needed our support for countless years before this.” ———— #blacklivesmatter #blacktranslivesmatter #translivesmatter #forthegworls #homelessblacktranswomenfund #theokraproject #blacktranstravelfund #twocc #emergencyreleasefund #terf #btfacollective #asiansforblacklives #jkrowlingcansuckittho https://www.instagram.com/p/CBKQIa3A0Zs/?igshid=d3wyzs6tgdky

Hi Yejide It’s awesome that you’re supporting these organizations with your readings. I’d like a general reading about getting in touch with my ancestors and family traditions. My initials are VS, mothers initials are VM. Method whatever you feel is best.
Hey there! Glad you think so and thanks for helping with that goal by donating to the Trans Women of Color Collective :) I love to use my African American Tarot deck for everything related to ancestors. I asked three questions about how you can better connect to your ancestors and family traditions.
You received Two of Wands reversed on the topic of connecting with your ancestors. The card art depicts the West African demon that posses newborn babies, called the Obambou. There is a belief that when the dead are not buried properly and well taken care of, their spirits can turn into Obambou who enter infants’ bodies and cause them to go mad and wild. It’s going to be essential for you to be proactive about learning your culture’s specific ancestral customs and ways of working with ancestors. Research and study as much as you can so that you can create a traditional altar that they are happy with. Make sure to give offerings and tend to their altar consistently. This card speaks of an impending risk in the way that you work with them if you aren’t careful and sensitive to their needs.
For honoring your family traditions, the Emperor appeared. In this deck, he is Olorun, the owner of the sky and heaven (Orun) in Yoruba religion. It is a title of the Supreme God and creator of the universe. I’m getting a strong sense here about monotheism and perhaps even Abrahamic religions. If your family practices one of these religions, even if it isn’t consistent with your beliefs, you may want to consider honoring some of the important traditions related to that. I’m also sensing a strong patriarch and/or patrilineal traditions in your family from this card.
Lastly, I asked about what offering you could provide for your ancestors and received the Tower, who is Gaunab - the South African deity of evil who causes misfortune, disaster, and death. The good news is that the previous two cards provide some guidance on what to do, the bad news is that this card is to me a very strong indicator that your ancestors may not be too pleased with you at the moment. Maybe you are feeling lost, in conflict, or uncomfortable with family or your family line right now - or maybe it’s that your ancestors have been wanting attention and time from you that you haven’t yet given them. The “offering” being asked for here is to wash away whatever has been holding you back like a destructive flood that clears obstacles but also cleanses. I recommend some deep meditation or reflection on what these tensions may be and to make some plans to begin working with your ancestors more closely.
