Whether you are driving a truck or a boat
Whether you are driving a truck or a boat, you will need to keep an eye on the pop-off truck foot brake valve. Not only does it serve as the main source of air pressure, but it is also used to apply the brakes on your trailer as well. If you do not, you could end up in a skid. Luckily, most trucks Air Brake Solenoid Valve suppliers have a simple pop-off truck foot brake valve that makes it easy to control the brakes on your trailer.
There are a number of things to keep an eye out for, such as the parking brake knob, the emergency line, the service line, the air valve and the push-pull valve. There are also a number of checks and balances in play, such as the governor. This prevents the pump from over-pressurizing the air system. In addition, a separate air tank can be used to release the spring brakes when the going gets tough. Tractor Protection Valve
Whether you are driving a Ford, International, Chevy, Chevy GMC, Kenworth, Hino or Freightliner, your truck has a tractor protection valve that is important to your safety. The tractor protection valve prevents air loss from the tractor braking system. It is usually mounted on the rear of the cab.
A tractor protection valve has two inputs: a foot-valve delivery-port and a relay valve. These inputs are combined through a two-way check valve, and then directed through the tractor-protection valve. The double check valve ensures that air is sent from each reservoir to the trailer brakes.
Depending on the model, the tractor protection valve is a red eight-sided knob or a lever. In older trucks, the lever may be in the dashboard. This knob is used to operate the air valve. Relay valve
Usually installed near the rear service brake chambers, the relay valve directs air from the remote air supply to the rear service brakes. This shortens the time it takes to apply the rear brakes, which helps to reduce brake lag.
Relay valves are commonly found on larger vehicles, such as a tractor. They can be installed underneath the vehicle frame or near the air tank. They use air pressure to move a rod or a disc, which pushes brake shoes.
Relay valves are used on the rear axles of long wheelbase trucks. They also correct brake lag. In addition, they protect electrical circuits. They are also used on trailers. They are used to apply parking brakes. The function of a relay valve is analogous to that of a transistor in an electronic circuit.

3 Ways to Adopt Advances in Pneumatic Valve Technology
Pneumatic valves have come a long way since the development of the compressor more than a century ago and it can be a real challenge to ensure you’re taking full advantage of the latest development for your organization.
The valves on today’s market are smaller, faster and more advanced than their predecessors and offer many advantages and opportunities for organizations that can be easily overlooked. Here are three ways to adopt the latest advances in pneumatic valve technology.
Choose components that adhere to ISO valve standards ISO International Standards ensure that products are safe, reliable and of good quality, helping to deliver increased customer satisfaction through consistent quality. ISO standards can also be used strategically by businesses to help reduce costs through improved systems and processes, minimize waste and errors, and increase productivity.
ISO valve standards were initiated on to proprietary designed valves more than 20 years ago, including Parker’s H Series 15407 and 5599, and more recently on to collective wiring solutions. Both end users and OEMs can benefit from significant cost reductions from multi-supplier support, simplification of wiring and a decrease in unwanted machine downtime.
Opt for intelligent and simple wiring solutions 3 Ways to Adopt Advances in Pneumatic Valve Technology-Moduflex with H Series Micro Valves Island-Pneumatic Division Europe-Automation Group-Parker Hannifin CorporationUtilizing collective wiring solutions provides an elegant mechanism to consolidate solenoid wiring into a single “collective” connection on the valve manifold. This method significantly reduces costs and complexity, as the valve manifold can be moved out of the control cabinet to the point-of-use application located near the pneumatic process, eliminating long tubing runs and delayed responses in operation.
When integrating a fieldbus solution, there is a sharp reduction in the number of components needed on the bill of material as junction boxes and control cabinets are reduced to simple connections. Now, two cables – one for communication and one for power – can handle the workload of hundreds. Large machines can be broken down for shipment and reassembled with an absolute minimum amount of labor since the wiring is bus connected with only two cables.
With fewer components in the system, electrical losses are reduced and overall energy efficiency is increased. Additionally, the reduction of wiring into a collective wiring solution offers a low probability of wiring errors. Combined with elimination of junction boxes and conduit runs, this translates into simplified engineering drawings saving additional unnecessary time.
Incorporate cloud-connected innovations 3 Ways to Adopt Advances in Pneumatic Valve Technology-H Series ISO pneumatic valves with industrial communications system-Pneumatic Division Europe-Automation Group-Parker Hannifin CorporationIncorporating a fieldbus solution, such as our industrial communication series, to control pneumatic valves could be the first step towards implementing intelligent, cloud-connected Industry 4.0 innovations on the assembly line. These solutions create an automated industrial network, specifically designed for communications between programmable logic controls (PLCs) via a communications system such as Ethernet.
With many end users adopting lean principles of manufacturing and continually striving to eliminate waste and improve material flow, collective wiring offers the additional benefit of easy relocation of manufacturing centers. With the elimination of junction boxes, disassembling a station can be as easy as disconnecting a few cord sets and reconnecting after the move. The control panel and overall machine size will be reduced because valve manifolds can be located conveniently around the machine, rather than in one large, central location.
The next time an opportunity to specify a pneumatic valve solution arises, consider specifying an ISO standard with integrated fieldbus. If rising labor costs and wiring complexity are causing increases in machine cost and maintenance complications, look into the ever-advancing capabilities of collective wiring solutions and diagnostic capabilities. Improved profitability and decreased machine build times are all possible with today’s pneumatic valve solutions.

AI breakthrough in Tassie salmon farming
Established in 1986, Huon Aquaculture has grown to become a salmon producer that is recognised around the world for the quality of its produce and the ingenuity of its operations.
The company is seen as an ethical business and a respected Tasmanian brand — part of a sustainable industry and a company that is focused on the safety of its employees, as well as the welfare of the fish and the wildlife around its farms.
Huon Aquaculture is fortunate to farm in Tasmania’s healthy marine environment, allowing them to raise salmon and ocean trout in locations best suited to optimal growth. From the time their fish start their life in hatcheries, up until they are harvested, their environment plays a vital role in their health, growth and quality.
Huon is a fully vertically integrated company, meaning that the company does everything from selectively breeding brood stock for egg production, to processing salmon ready for the consumer.
Rough conditions in Storm Bay
Huon’s Storm Bay lease has the roughest farmable waters in the world. Located at the mouth of Tasmania’s Derwent River and opening south towards the wild Southern Ocean, Storm Bay can regularly experience swells of 4–6 metres significant wave height. While these conditions can be dangerous for people, Huon has found that the swells regularly rolling through the pens is good for the fish as it closely mimics their natural habitat. It also means that the pens can be left fallow for a shorter time before restocking.
However, the rough seas are also one of the reasons that Huon embarked on a journey to find a way to reduce or eliminate the need for people to be manually operating feed barges in such rough and dangerous conditions. Huon looked into mirroring what companies were doing around the world, where they were controlling their processes from a centralised location.
Consistency of yield depends on consistency of feeding
A major reason for automating fish feeding is the desire to maximise the consistency of the size and weight of the salmon at harvesting. Huon’s pens are, according to Peter Bender, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, the largest ocean fish pens in the world, with circumferences of around 240 metres and holding over 100,000 fish. With manual feeding, there can be days when fish are fed less and days when they are overfed — and uneaten fish pellets fall to the ocean floor, which is not only wasteful, but pollutes the ocean floor environment.
Moreover, without an even distribution of feed, the result can be an inconsistency in fish size, as the larger fish continue to dominate and consume the most, while others remain small.
No out-of-the-box solution
As a result, Bender went to an exhibition in Europe, only to realise that none of the software displayed was going to be fit for purpose for Huon because of the way they feed and their stocking densities. Many of the systems were designed for feed pens close to shore, and not up to 50 km out to sea, exposed to the Southern Ocean.
The company realised that an out-of-the-box program was not going to meet their needs, so they knew they had to work from the ground up. The company’s aims were to:
move to a centralised control platform that would reduce man-hours out on the water and on the barges, improving personnel safety;
achieve better control over feeding the salmon from the barges;
develop innovation in aquafarming;
have a positive environmental impact in reducing waste with controlled feeding.
The challenge was therefore to develop new technology and implement it on a larger barge that could be moored at sea for longer periods without replenishment.
Enter Hogan, the automated feed barge
Commissioned and launched in December 2018 by Tasmanian shipbuilder Crisp Bros. & Haywards, Hogan is the first of two 600-tonne feed barges that will be used to manage the pens in Storm Bay. The sheer size of the barge is a result of it needing to not only withstand the sea conditions in Storm Bay, but also to remain autonomous for larger periods of time — both for feeding and waste recovery activities.
Tumblr media
The significance of the barge is not so much due to its size, however, but due to its technology. Those staff that were once fish feeders are now control room operators and feed every fish in every pen from a control room in Hobart. They are able to do this as each pen has cameras that send real-time footage and data back via the barge to the control room. A pellet detection system that utilises artificial intelligence coupled with a remote controlled on-water feed delivery system makes feed delivery more effective than previous manual feeding.
The pellet detection system can detect as few as two uneaten feed pellets in the water column beneath the fish, and can automatically slow or shut off the flow of feed when the fish have stopped feeding — matching the feeding to the appetite of the fish while reducing wastage and potential impact to the sea floor.
In addition to the pellet detection system, Huon also developed a feed delivery system that spreads the feed evenly across the surface of the pen, by effectively ‘spraying’ it from a central point. This ensures that the fish have an equal chance of receiving feed — resulting in a consistent 5 kg fish size at harvesting.
Harsh conditions require tough hardware
For the control system on the barge, Huon engaged Cromarty Pty Ltd, a specialist automation system engineering and design firm. Cromarty provided all the electrical and control system design. The design work was done over an 18-month period.
Tumblr media
“When we were asked to get involved in the building of the barges, it was identified that there wasn’t a proper specification of the valves to be used for the various processes on the vessel,” said Andrew Palfreyman of Cromarty. “Basically the valves chosen were not up to the task of working reliably in the harsh and corrosive conditions expected.”
Andrew encouraged Haywards to contact Katherine George, Managing Director of Total Instrument Controls, to assist in specifying the right type of valves to be used in the elements of the Southern Ocean.
Total Instrument Controls are a supplier of instrumentation and control technology and are one of the leading Australian resellers of Bürkert’s valve systems and controls. Previously the company had supplied Huon Aquaculture with various Bürkert equipment for their hatcheries, including solenoid valves and actuators, as well as oxygen dosing systems.
Tumblr media
“The various valves from Bürkert that we supplied for the project have a variety of tasks from moving fluids (air, water, fuel etc) around the barge, as well as controlling the feed spreader systems, deck wash systems and generator fuel shut-offs,” Katherine George said. “Any valves in contact with salt water use a particular grade of stainless steel called Duplex for the trim material, as it provides the best corrosion resistance.”
Tumblr media
“Bürkert’s 3005 actuators with battery backup on top of butterfly valves and stainless steel ball valves were chosen. Battery backup was chosen to implement failsafe functionality in case of power loss or loss of communication to the barge,” he added. “Battery backup was a must as many of the valves have the potential to sink the barge in stormy weather if they are stuck open, allowing the seawater to continue to enter the vessel.”
AI the crowning achievement
The huge barge, the remote control and the innovative feed system are all achievements that Huon Aquaculture and its suppliers can be proud of. But the crowning achievement is possibly the artificial intelligence and machine learning that has been incorporated into the control system.
Rather than relying on human operators observing the video feed, as is done in European systems, Huon has a achieved a system that uses the latest in AI and machine learning to automatically respond to fish behaviour, and can ‘learn on the job’. Managing Director Peter Bender believes the system may well be the first of its kind in the world — a world-leading innovation built on Tasmanian ingenuity.

Four Errors Coffee Shops Make That Impact Coffee Quality
As a coffee shop owner, customers will rely on you to serve them great coffee every single day. While buying the right beans is a great way to start, how you look after your coffee is just as important.
Coffee changes from the minute it’s roasted to the second it’s drunk. There are a number of factors that affect how your coffee will taste when brewed. This is why you have to do everything you can to control and maximise its quality.
Here are four common errors coffee shops make that can impact coffee quality – and how you can avoid making them.
You may also like Managing Customer Expectations in Your Coffee Shop
Tumblr media
Error #1 – Storing Your Coffee Incorrectly
Coffee should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool area where it won’t be disturbed. Billy Toskas is the owner of Billy’s Bar Espresso in Maroubra, Sydney, and as his coffee shop goes through 150kg of coffee weekly, he’s aware of how important storage is for roasted coffee.
He stores his coffee in one-way valve bags which are kept in an underground room at a stable temperature. Billy says: “We never keep the bags where they can be exposed to the sun or the heat from the kitchen gear. This just overheats the coffee; it can get oily, and develop flat, baked flavours.”
How you store your coffee may also change as the weather does. For example, in Sydney, there can be significant temperature fluctuations between the summer and winter, which impacts how Billy stores his coffee. “We started resting the coffee for two weeks before use instead of one in colder weather. We noticed that when it’s cold, the coffee starts brewing like it’s way too fresh if we only rest it for five to seven days.”
However, not all coffee shops will have access to dedicated, temperature-controlled storage space. If you don’t, then it’s important that you just keep your coffee away from exposure to extreme heat, cold, moisture, and sunlight. I’ve seen coffee shops experiencing coffee quality issues and tracing the problem back to storing the coffee in a hot van, near a kitchen cooking area, or in a cupboard next to a heater. Avoiding such conditions will be easy enough for most coffee shops.
Tumblr media
Error #2 – Neglecting Daily Equipment Maintenance
Coffee shop espresso machines are complex pieces of equipment. That’s why regular maintenance is so important. Not only will this help you to avoid costly repair visits from technicians, your equipment will also last longer.
Paul Martin is the Technical Manager at United Supplies in Sydney, a business that supplies and maintains espresso equipment. He says: “The number one cause of espresso machines breaking down is lack of basic maintenance. The 5000th shot you brew should be as good as the first, provided the machine is well taken care of.”
He recommends combining expert care with day-to-day staff care. While the servicing and parts replacement dates for every machine will differ, Paul says a technician should inspect, clean, or replace the machine’s shower screens, group heads, seals, steam wand, grinder blades, and grinding chamber twice a year. He adds that the machine’s boiler safety parts, flow meters, and solenoid valves will require an annual inspection.
Creating regular processes for your baristas to follow will help get them into the habit of performing necessary maintenance. According to Paul, this can include:
Performing a two-second flush of the grouphead after every brew to remove residue.
Knocking out the filter basket after shots to keep coffee from baking into the machine.
Backflushing the group heads with cleaner and washing the portafilters daily.
Keeping the steam wand free of milk crust after each use.
Washing the grinder hoppers and vacuuming the grinders daily to remove old coffee.
Removing and cleaning the shower screens several times a week.
Not storing liquids or food on top of the machine to prevent any damaging leaks.
Regularly tasting the coffee so you can pick up on issues as soon as possible.
Paul admits while some of these tasks might be challenging and take time to get used to, they are a must. “For anyone serious about producing good coffee, all of these are critical to… avoiding costly breakdowns.”
Tumblr media
Error #3 – Ignoring Your Espresso Machine Brew Temperature
Knowing your espresso machine’s water brewing temperature is important – but without specialised equipment, you might not be able to pinpoint the exact figure. While some machines allow you to set the temperature for each grouphead, these settings can be accidentally changed or may not be optimised for the coffee you’re brewing. This will impact the quality of your coffee.
The water brewing temperature affects how quickly the coffee extracts, and how many flavour compounds are released. Different drinks or beans might require different brewing temperatures for optimal extraction.
Coffee trainer Melita Ferraro says it’s common for different blends to have different optimal brewing temperatures – even on the same machine. If you aren’t sure if you’re working with the best temperature for the coffee you brew, she recommends tasting it.
“If your coffee is not quite right – perhaps it lacks sweetness or body or sourness is creeping in – check your water temperature,” Melita says. “You could find that an extra 1 or 2 degrees either side will make the difference, and suddenly the coffee just comes alive.” Taste-testing should be done by your team, and with your coffee supplier if possible.
Melita warns that the ambient temperature of your coffee shop could also affect your results, so this should be taken into account. “Cold air blowing onto the coffee machine in winter can alter the brewing temperature downward and cause under-extraction.”
If your machinery doesn’t let you manually set a water brewing temperature, then make sure its boiler is working correctly and is scale-free. Beyond that, you should also have a technician use an espresso machine thermofilter or something similar to regularly check the exact brewing temperature.
Tumblr media
Error #4 – Not Testing Your Water Quality
A flavoursome brew starts with clean, oxygenated water that is close to a neutral pH as possible. Water often contains organic particles, sediment, and other substances which can negatively affect your coffee’s taste and should be filtered out before brewing.
Your water also needs to have minerals like calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate to extract the coffee’s flavour effectively. Too many of these minerals will create limescale in your machine, and may leave customers with a chalky or dull coffee. Too little, however, may produce a coffee that tastes sour or vinegary.
Installing specialised filters that use physical and active carbon filtration or reverse osmosis will be beneficial. However, as the chemical characteristics of water vary heavily from area to area, you should test your water, too. Finally, make sure that you’re using the right filtration system, and that you properly and maintain it. If you don’t regularly replace your filters or set up your system to remineralise your water, the quality of your coffee could decrease.
Tumblr media
Making time to implement quality control measures can be difficult when you’re running a coffee shop. However, quality issues that come out of nowhere can be frustrating if you don’t know where to look. If you make sure you’re proactive about keeping quality high by avoiding these four common errors, you can guarantee your customers a better coffee experience.

ECM SYNCHRONIKA REVIEW - BETTER THAN THE ROCKET AND PROFITEC!
Tumblr media
The Synchronika is the top of the line dual boiler machine from ECM, and it's a winner in several respects. But before we explain why this machine is exceptional, let's talk about ECM's founder - Wolfgang Hauck, because when you buy an ECM, you're buying into the ethos of a pioneering and entrepreneurial founder.
ECM Synchronica - Summary Up Front
Tumblr media
We love this machine on many levels. The design looks like a fusion of Italian passion with robust German pragmatism.  The price is half that of a La Marzocco Linea Mini, which we also like, but unlike the La Marzocco, you get flow control - which is a huge feature you pay through the nose for with a Slayer single head machine. The Synchronica is a no-compromise machine with absolutely top quality components, so you can feel comfortable that you will buy once and not feel the need to upgrade for many years. It has a dual boiler, a rotary pump - ensuring quiet operation, E61 Group, PID, optional flow control (at a cost) and a versatile display. The steam power is up to par with its rivals, and if the shiny chrome isn't too your liking, it's simple to customise. There is an ability to do line based preinfusion, although you may need to do some adjustments to get it working. A minor niggle is that I've heard some people mentioning their systems developing a little rattle. This appears to come from some loosening screws and is easily remedied by going around and doing a bit of tightening - perhaps using some plumbers tape to keep them in tightly. The only thing it seems to be missing is a mobile app for additional controls. Read below for our thoughts on the usefulness of apps as at the date this was written. The build quality from ECM is what makes us smile. To interact with the machine, hold their portafilter, touch the smooth rounded edges and admire the top-level hand welding. This is a hand made machine that gives you pleasure every time you use it. Replacement parts are available, and internally it has an elegant and considerate layout that makes it easily serviceable.  The ECM Synchronika is an espresso machine that you love to use every day, is beautiful to look at, not only for the design but the quality of the build, which is quickly noticeable.
Who are ECM and Where are they Manufactured?
Hauck has been in the business for over 25 years, and before he was manufacturing his own product line, he was importing and distributing machines from Gaggia, Cimbali, Pavoni and others. Later, in 1996 Hauck struck out on his own to make ECM in 1996. Later his son joined the firm and added additional technical expertise, and now runs the business as its CEO. The company says they combine Italian espresso culture with German engineering, something we'll come onto later, but you can see this immediately with the elegant but industrial style of their equipment. Now, their commercial espresso machines and grinders are manufactured in Germany at their own production centre. They produce their consumer-focused machines in Italy since 95% of the suppliers are located there already.
ECM Synchronika Price and Competition
You can buy a Synchronika for £2,280 from Doppio Coffee in the UK, an authorised reseller. In the US, they sell for $2,999 and you can pick it up from Whole Latte Love. That's not a bad price for a machine that is hand-built with such an extensive range of features. The Synchronika is most often compared to the Rocket R58 and the Profitec 700, both of which are essentially the same price, and are similar in some ways, but do not match the build quality of the ECM.
Specification and Features
This machine does not have any volumetric controls, but if you wanted that, you wouldn't be looking at this kind of system in any case. The volumetric system - which measures the output volume of shots has gained popularity in some professional machines where turnaround speed is a prime consideration.  But more recent research indicates that this is a flawed method because different beans have different densities, so weighing the shot is more important than measuring the volume. This is especially relevant for a home barista who may be changing their beans and roast levels frequently - darker roasts have less density than milder roasts, for example.
Design and Build Quality
We know that not everyone is a fan of the shiny chrome look, but for a small company, it's a safe option, and it will look great in any kitchen, and if you want something warmer, we've seen how it looks in beautiful wood panelling, which is simple enough to create, we expect any local woodworking shop will be able to route some new panels for you.
Tumblr media
Simple switching between water sources are examples of ECM's attention to detail Ask any 'metal nerd', whether it be bicycle frames or deep-sea pipe maintenance, and they'll talk about weld quality. Now you can add espresso machines into that group. We mentioned that these are hand-built machines, and the weld quality is superb. Look into the little nooks and crannies of the ECM, and you'll not see ugly lumps of weld - everything butts up with minimum seams. These details on their own may not add up to much, but together, the effect on the eye is noticeable immediately and adds to the satisfaction you get from owning something that was hand-built by craftsmen. You can do almost any repair on this machine without special tools. You'll just need some common sized screwdrivers and an adjustable spanner.
Maintenance
The Synchronika was designed for easy access. I know the German designers are somewhere secretly smiling to themselves as we look inside the casing because the magic of the build quality is not just skin deep.  Accessing the machine takes the removal/loosening of 6 easily accessed hex screws using a 2.5mm Allen key. At that point, you can remove all the body panels, so you have easy access to all areas of the internals.
Tumblr media
The frame is entirely powder-coated, which will ensure it maintains its good looks for years to come - and not a cheap option. ECM decided to use a single solenoid valve, which initially confused me because I know others of a similar class use two, but then doing some research, I learned that solenoid valves often are the source of failure in espresso machines. I guess ECM found a way to accomplish what they need to do with only a single valve, which should contribute to better reliability.
Interface and Lack of Mobile App
The PID ECM uses blends into the machine, which is a different direction than most other manufacturers, who make a 'feature' of the display. I prefer ECM's approach. Some people have reported they find super-bright displays annoying when they have an open plan kitchen and living room area. ECM did the right thing by being understated, and in fact, you can even switch it off.
Tumblr media
The single PID serves several functions. Steam Boiler TemperatureBrew TemperatureShot TimerCustom alerts to clean machine ECM has not developed an app or the capability for an app in the Synchronika. I can see a time when using your phone as an interface is the only way to control your brew, but that for me, that will only happen when it provides flow control and profiling like the Decent Espresso machine. Apps, such as the one from La Marzocco, seem to be a solution looking for a problem at the moment. Remotely turning on your machine is one use case often used. But that can easily be achieved with a wifi activated plug like the one from TP-Link below. For everything else, like brew-head temperature, I'm much happier seeing that on a minimalist PID screen, rather than fumbling with my phone.
Steaming
The steam wand is cool-touch, which is a nice feature, although I couldn't tell if it created a condensation issue, as they sometimes do. The wand is reasonably mobile, making it easy to find the right position. I don't fiddle much with a steam wand when frothing milk, but I know this is a big thing with some people. The resellers will tell you it will steam 250ml in 10 seconds using the very impressive 2 bar pressure, but owners will tell you it takes longer in reality, perhaps 30 seconds is nearer the mark. A 4 hole steam tip might improve things and original ECM versions are available for about £10 ($12). Producing steam is controlled with a short stick. I prefer lever control over knobs. I find knobs take too long to turn on and off - they annoy me. levers, on the other hand, feel good to use, and the ECM has a nice feature which allows you to burst some steam with short push, or have it run continuously with a long pull on the lever. Call me childish, but I also like the fact that levers allow great wood customisation.
Tumblr media
Portafilters
You get a mix of portafilters in the kit, and as you'd expect, ECM takes as much pride over the design of each basket as they do in the machine itself. The handles match the steam levers. They're angled so that you can rest them on a surface and the basket will be level, making tamping a breeze. ECM even sends you a tamper in the kit that isn't plastic. It puts other companies to shame, with their throwaway plastic items that look like a McDonald's toy. Finally, I'm sure it's no coincidence that the handle is weighty, which results in a nice balance. Everything about the ECM seems like an engineer thought it through, not an accountant.
The Boilers
It's a dual boiler machine, which means you independently control the temperature at the brew head, and for steaming milk. ECM uses 1400 watt heating elements and substantial 2-litre steam boilers that pushes out steam at 2bar. That's similar to what the commercial Victoria Arduino Eagle one manages and significantly higher than the 1.5 bar often found on other similar espresso machines. You'll steam 6oz of milk in around 10 seconds, and 12oz in 20 seconds. This is great for a busy barista but actually might work against you if you are still learning how to steam.  In this regard, the steam control levers can have less fidelity than their knob counterparts. So this is not a machine that you want to learn how to steam on.
Water
ECM has designed the Synchronikia to be simple to switch between the reservoir and plumbed in use. Changing is as simple as attaching the pipe underneath the machine and flipping a switch. When using the internal tank, you'll be able to add 2.8 litres of water, which is about the right amount. You fill it from the top as you'd expect, and you should check to see if you have enough room to put it under a kitchen cabinet and still get a water jug above it to pour from the top.
Flow Control
The flow control mechanism is an optional purchase from ECM. They charge a rather exorbitant price (£179 around $220) which is very difficult to swallow after laying out over £2k on a machine already.
Tumblr media
That said, the La Marzocco Linea Mini - at almost double the cost, has a paddle that mimics the flow control mechanism, but it's there for looks only, and in fact, only controls an electronic switch with a binary on/off function. The popularity of the device is not in question though, as they are regularly a back-ordered item. Flow control, as it sounds, is how much water is allowed through the valve. Sometimes it is incorrectly referred to as water pressure. It's true that pressure is influenced by the flow, so they're linked, but not the same thing. Controlling the amount of water that flows, and hence the pressure means that you can do things like run a long pre-infusion or mimic the behaviour of certain types of machines with their specific characteristics. For example, a lever machine might have full pressure at the outset of the shot, and reduce the flow as the shot nears completion. Different beans and roast techniques will react to different flavour profiles that can be generated by controlling the amount of water flow at different times throughout the pulling of your shot.
Tumblr media
If you just want to do pre-infusion, then you may be satisified with using a technique ECM has built in to the standard model. The pre-infusion works by letting water into the group head without initiating the rotary pump. In theory this should work fine, but in practice there are reports of many users seeing no water come out until the pump is activated. This is probably due to incorrect adjustment of the cams inside the valve unit. There is a simple way to adjust these, but it seems odd that ECM don't test this before they're shipped.
E61 Group Head
I was surprised when I learned that the E61 Grouphead design goes back to 1961! The fact that it is still being used today must stand as a testament to its function. E61 group heads are not perfect, but they're simple to maintain and do a pretty good job with thermo-stability. The mechanics work on basic physics, with springs, washers, cams and needles.
Tumblr media
When you turn the handle on the ECM, a cam (like an odd-shaped circular wheel moves inside the valve, pushing one needle up and another one down. This releases the water flow when the handle is turned one way and closes it when it is returned. On a well-made valve, you can expect the only things to need changing from time to time are the gaskets, and depending on your water hardness, they might need cleaning from limescale.
Comparing the ECM Synchronika with Profitec Pro 700 and the Rocket R58
The ECM is the most expensive machine among its peers, but only by a small margin, but it's common to ask what the differences are and whether the ECM is the right choice. We'll do a separate full review of the Rocket R58 and Profitec Pro 700's, but there is a short answer. The ECM has unrivalled build quality. They have gone to extreme lengths to ensure it runs silently, has the most elegant and simple internal layout, and uses understated design touches that you'll appreciate every time you look at it. The Profitec 700 is almost identical to the ECM, but some of the fit and finish is not quite up to the same standards. The Rocket uses different internals, such a smaller set of brass boilers instead of the stainless steel ones on the ECM. There's small things I don't personally like about the Rocket. The looks are cool for a while, but they wear off, the branding is a little too pronounced and seems to be on every element of the equipment, and it's not as nice to touch and use, for example the amount of turns I need to do on the steam knobs vs the ECM where I can slap the stick down at any angle and it immediately comes on. Buy the ECM if you want all the features and the best build quality.Buy the Profitec Pro 700 if you want the same functionality of the ECM but are willing to sacrifice a small amount of final build quality for a slightly lower price.Buy the Rocket if you want to make a design statement and don't care about having an always-available PID. Where Will koi pond supplies Be 1 Year From Now?
In some cases I get phone calls from Individuals who have purchased a different household having an outdated pond which has a significant dilemma. The number one criticism is that it'll not hold h2o; 2nd would be that the water is green; 3rd is that the rock operate is unattractive - an eyesore!
At that time I ask if their waterfall and pond are constructed that has a pond liner, and they're astonished which i understood that. On the other hand, eighty p.c of all these types of calls pertain to the liner pond and waterfall. Now we have replaced around $80,000 well worth of faulty liner ponds. One buyer in Rancho Bernardo, California, had spent $fourteen,000 to possess a koi pond and waterfall created by a sizable and perfectly revered community pond liner offer organization. They complained of needing to add water everyday For the reason that liner pond was created over a year in the past.
The pond liner installer's reaction was that the loss of h2o was from evaporation. The liner pond was equipped which has a handbook vehicle fill technique and so they discovered the solenoid was turning on each quarter-hour to replenish the reduction. Along with the irritating h2o reduction, they could not enjoy their fish for 50 percent the year because of murky environmentally friendly foul-smelling water. They described the pond liner business arrived out dozens of instances dumping different concoctions within the pond which has a guarantee of startling final results. The outcomes had been startling all ideal - our consumer sued the pond liner retail outlet and contracted with us.
The very first thing I learned was that the amount in the liner pond was 8,000 gallons along with the waterfall pump was only one,000 gallons for every hour. It had been having eight several hours to run the total pond quantity from the filter. Next, the filter was rated to get a two,000 gallon pond, not eight,000. (Filters are usually overrated by their suppliers as it is actually.) Third, the ultraviolet light was also rated for just a 2,000 gallon pond, rendering it only one-quarter efficient (In keeping with its ratings) at controlling suspended algae advancement. Fourth, because the pump was only 1,000 gallons per hour, it wasn't potent adequate to adequately backwash the filter, which necessitates 4 situations the flow to get back-flushed thoroughly.
For that reason, the filter was overloaded with rotting squander content that was contributing to further air pollution on the liner pond. The fifth defect in design was because of the pond's large surface area area, which was surrounded by numerous deciduous trees which were dropping their leaves to the liner pond. Obviously, there was no skimmer mounted. So All of this debris ended up rotting on The underside on the pond, contributing for the nitrate and ammonia overload.
The sixth discovery was that the suction drain on the bottom was at the same close from the liner pond given that the waterfall. Therefore, the water was only circulating amongst the h2o returning towards the pond and also the drinking water leaving it (from waterfall to empty). 50 % the liner pond wasn't circulating appropriately and was stagnating because the nitrifying germs were not receiving sufficient oxygen to carry out their job of breaking down the nitrites.
Tumblr media
NOW Let us DO IT Proper
We were asked to assess the condition from the liner pond and identify the price to correct the issues discovered. We turned from the waterfall inside the liner to test the evaporation theory and found out (Along with the falls turned off) the pond was losing 25 to 30 gallons daily, or 750 gallons per month! Installing a bigger pump filter and UV wasn't heading to solve all their issues.
I suggested that given that a reputable pond builder and retail store operator was included, he should really receive a 2nd belief. He was confident that, with our track record of 22 several years and 1,800 ponds underneath our belt (At the moment), we realized what we were carrying out.
Following obtaining A brief dwelling to the fish, we drained the liner pond and quickly designed two discoveries. Given that the water was getting pumped out of the pond, there was a little waterfall producing from the water that poured back through a hole inside the liner designed from a tree root. Also, h2o was leaking back again by way of a unfastened seal around the bottom drain as speedy as we could pump it out. (This ongoing for quite a while, revealing there were hundreds of gallons of drinking water remaining saved inside the sandy soil bordering the perimeter from the liner pond as a result of the continued leaks.)
We made available to maintenance the defective drain and patch the punctured liner and refill it, though the proprietor insisted we do it appropriate, applying rebar additionally 3500 PSI concrete and skimmer. Regretably, not a single solitary merchandise in the complete method could possibly be reused in the new design. Even the PVC piping needed to be scrapped because it was undersized for the pump.
In the ultimate analysis, for the reason that this undertaking wasn't thought out or built properly, the First $14,000 spent was fully squandered. Changing every thing and installing it appropriately cost The client $17,000. The new pond was made of 3/eight" and ½" rebar, ten" on Heart with 4 ½" of 3500 PSI concrete and fiber combine extra. The unsightly fiberglass waterfall was removed and replaced which has a pure on the lookout waterfall produced of concrete serious granite rock.
A skimmer was put in on the alternative side with the pond within the waterfall. The underside suction drains (two anti-vortex drains in sequence to avoid turtles or fish from having sucked from the drain) have been put on the opposite facet with the pond from your waterfall To optimize circulation.
Next, a Venturi valve was set up to add supplemental oxygen and make a circular current within the pond. This provides oxygenated water to all locations. A 6000-gallon biofilter was mounted with two a hundred and eighty-watt ultraviolet lights. The superior efficiency filter pump, which runs 24 hours on a daily basis, and it is rated at 4,800 gallons for every hour.
We installed a 2nd pump of the identical score to permit for 2 times the stream quantity off the waterfall on desire. It's also operated by a timer that will come on twice every day for one particular hour. This retains sediment stirred up during the waterfalls and pond to help the filter in eliminating it. The skimmer now removes ninety % of all particles falling in the pond prior to it could become waterlogged and sink to the bottom.
The Digital h2o amount Management we installed within the past pond for the proprietor's ask for was the only item that was reused in The brand new system. It can be meant to increase drinking water for the pond instantly as wanted as a result of regular h2o decline through evaporation and wicking all-around bog planters into adjacent soil.
This story has actually been recurring dozens of occasions over the past few years. Thankfully, A lot of them were being over a A great deal lesser scale.
A lot of our business is word of mouth, so I think about there are many individuals that, not knowing whom to call, simply just gave up and turned their drinking water element right into a rock backyard garden. Imagine 2 times ahead of investing excessive income into a liner pond. Ask the contractor unique questions on the safeguards he usually takes from leaks caused by roots and critters. Also, get several bids on concrete and rebar made ponds, they sometimes only Price tag 20% a lot more and might be anticipated to very last for many years.
My last phrase of recommendation, be patient, take your time and efforts and thoroughly examine the contractor and his claims.

4 Errors Coffee Shops Make That Impact Coffee Quality
Brewing great coffee every single day means taking care of your beans and your machine. Here are the 4 errors coffee shops make that impact coffee quality, as featured in THE PERFECT DAILY GRIND.
by Paul Golding, Paradox Head Roaster
As a coffee shop owner, customers will rely on you to serve them great coffee every single day. While buying the right beans is a great way to start, how you look after your coffee is just as important.
Coffee changes from the minute it’s roasted to the second it’s drunk. There are a number of factors that affect how your coffee will taste when brewed. This is why you have to do everything you can to control and maximise its quality.
Here are four common errors coffee shops make that can impact coffee quality – and how you can avoid making them.
