The singer and actor Olivia Newton-John, who has died aged 73 after suffering from cancer, had a ready riposte for anyone who called her “Miss Goody Two-Shoes from Australia”. Despite her Melbourne accent, she had been born in the UK, in Cambridge, and therefore – as she informed a US television audience in 1980 – she was technically “Miss Goody Two-Shoes from England”.

Either way, the quip was not far off the truth. Through a career that included 100m album sales and a starring role in Grease (1978), one of the most successful musicals in film history, she was the entertainer least likely to court controversy. Though she had passionate views, most notably on the environment and cancer research, she rarely expressed strong opinions on other subjects or engaged with negative criticism.

During the early 1970s in particular, she was one of the few young stars who were more popular with parents than with their children. She was once described by Rolling Stone magazine as “a sweet, innocent, 70s version of Doris Day”. However, in the late 70s, after a decade of soft-pop hits, she orchestrated one of the music industry’s most unexpected makeovers.

Her winsome denim wardrobe was replaced with black leather, and breezy album sleeves (often shot in meadows, playing up her girl-next-door freshness) with dark-toned, come-hither shots. The reinvention was mightily helped along by her performance as Sandy, the good-girl-gone-baddish in Grease, and the pot was stirred further by the 1981 hit Physical (“I want to get physical ... Let me hear your body talk,” it implored). Meanwhile, her wanton screen chemistry with her Grease co-star John Travolta was exploited to produce two No 1 singles, Summer Nights and You’re the One That I Want.

Her career duly rocketed, with Physical spending 10 weeks at the top of the US chart, but Newton-John never seemed entirely comfortable as a vamp. Continuing to foster the notion that she was pop’s safe pair of hands, she commented: “People don’t want to hear that you’re nice, but that’s what I am. In fact, I’m pretty boring.”

The 1970s adolescents who were intoxicated by her as Sandy disagreed. For millions of teenage girls she was a formative influence, and boring she was not. More likely, she was just eager to please. A telling example involved her appearance in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, in which she represented Britain. It was not until years later that she felt able to admit that she had hated not just the deplorably bouncy song – Long Live Love, which came fourth, the top spot going to Abba with Waterloo – but the frothy dress she had worn. She had wanted trousers, but when the public were polled about it they voted for the dress, and she was unwilling to disappoint.

That kind of deference made her enormously popular with conservative audiences in the US, where she had her greatest success, but it did not do much for her credibility. For the rest of her life, during which she also campaigned for animal rights and founded the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, she was defined by her emollience. In Travolta’s opinion: “Olivia is basically sweet and lovely.”

She was the youngest of three children born to Irene (nee Born) and Brinley Newton-John. The family moved from Britain to Australia in 1954 when Brinley, a teacher, accepted a post at the University of Melbourne. Bound by the Official Secrets Act, he kept his children in the dark about his earlier career – it was not until Olivia was an adult that she discovered that during the second world war her father had been an MI5 officer assigned to the Enigma codebreaking unit at Bletchley Park. Her maternal grandfather was the physicist Max Born, a Nobel laureate.

Olivia wanted to be a vet, but doubted her ability to pass the science exams, and turned instead to her other interest, performing. Regular spots under the name Lovely Livvy followed on Australian radio and television, and at 16 she won a TV talent show. The prize was a trip to London, where she arrived in 1964. Two years later, her debut single, Till You Say You’ll be Mine, failed to reach the chart, and her next venture, a singing duo formed with a fellow Australian, Pat Carroll, was also unsuccessful. She was recruited for a Monkees-inspired pop group called Toomorrow, who got as far as releasing a flop 1970 “space musical” film and two singles.

Her fortunes changed in 1971, when she met Cliff Richard, then hosting his own TV variety show, and was invited to become a regular guest singer. Bruce Welch and John Farrar, members of Richard’s backing band the Shadows, were taken by her girlishly beguiling voice and invited her to record demos in their studio. She was essentially a pop singer, but Welch and Farrar felt that her ability to deliver songs with sweet pathos could be used to good effect on country-oriented tracks.

They were right. One of the 1971 demos was a cover of Bob Dylan’s If Not for You, suitably zazzed up with slide guitar, and it became her first hit. Several more singles and two albums followed in the next two years; one track, an inordinately uptempo version of the murder ballad Banks of the Ohio, did well in the UK and Australia.

Her real breakthrough came in 1973 with the song Let Me Be There. Aimed directly at country playlists, Newton-John’s vocal twang belied her Australian roots. It secured her that year’s Grammy award for best female country vocal performance, and the string of hits that followed, including her signature song, I Honestly Love You, won her the female vocalist of the year trophy at the 1974 Country Music Association awards.

Newton-John’s wholesomeness, abetted by undeniably good tunes, made her a natural on country radio, but some of Nashville’s biggest names were incensed at the notion of an Australian invading their territory, and formed an association dedicated to keeping pop singers out of their genre. It did not stop Newton-John from winning several other major country trophies.

Remarkably, she later claimed to have been unaware of the backlash. “I was travelling and touring, and I heard about it after, and heard that Dolly [Parton] and Loretta [Lynn] had backed me up, so I had great support.”

It was more difficult to win over the then-powerful (and overwhelmingly male) rock music press, which detested her apparent lack of “authenticity”. It dished out particularly peevish coverage for years, carping at what the NME called “her limited stage choreography, her terrible linking, her overscrubbed artificial look of perfection and polish”. Others focused on her looks. “What female singer would ya like most to sit in yr lap?” asked the US rock magazine Creem. “Connie Francis? (too old) Cher? (too bananas). Answer: Olivia!”

Privately, she resented the criticism, but never responded. There was no need. The hits were still coming – some, such as If You Love Me (Let Me Know), are staples on nostalgia stations to this day. There were more awards, including another three Grammys, and in 1979 being made an OBE. But sales were tailing off by the time she was cast in Grease as the virginal Sandy Olsson, whose purity satirised the 1970s’ nostalgia for the 1950s.

She was initially hesitant to accept, because she was 29 and would be playing a 17-year-old: “I was very conscious of my limitations.” Even so, she negotiated equal billing with Travolta and a percentage of the proceeds in return for a bargain-basement $125,000 fee.

Grease’s enormous success, and the warm reviews for her own performance, reinvigorated Newton-John’s career. It paved the way for another departure – her role as a reincarnated Greek muse in the 1980 film Xanadu. She received middling reviews but every other aspect of the film was panned, except for its disco-oriented soundtrack. From it came two major (and excellent) Newton-John singles, the title track and Magic. The song and album Physical followed later that year. The LP sold 10m copies, while the video for the single, which had Newton-John in then-novel aerobics gear, picked up a Grammy.

Physical proved to be her commercial high-water mark, with none of her subsequent projects coming close to its success. Box-office gold was not rekindled when Newton-John and Travolta teamed up again for a poorly reviewed romcom, Two of a Kind (1983), and a chain of Australian-themed clothes shops that she founded the same year went bankrupt in 1992. That year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After successful treatment, she released several albums with a healing theme. In 2017 Newton-John discovered the cancer had returned. Part of her treatment took place at the Melbourne cancer research centre she had helped to fund in 2008, and the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund supports research into plant-based treatments for cancer. Her autobiography, Don’t Stop Believin’, was published in 2018, and two years later she was appointed a dame.

Newton-John’s first marriage, in 1984, to the actor Matt Lattanzi, ended in divorce in 1995. Her partner from 1996 onwards, the cameraman Patrick McDermott, was lost at sea and presumed drowned in 2005. Madison Avenue - “Don’t Call Me Baby” The Annual 2000 by Judge Jules & Tall Paul Song released in 1999. Mix released in 2000. House / Dance-Pop / Nu-Disco

Madison Avenue, the formidable and fleeting Australian duo who achieved worldwide fame, sales, and accolades off of a pair of similar-sounding, fun, and fierce dance-pop club bangers at the turn of the millennium, actually didn’t originally intend for themselves to become just a two-person group. And that might sound a little hard to believe given that the team-up of Andy Van Dorsselaer and Cheyne Coates sounded like golden, mass-appealing kismet, but the two of them actually wanted someone else to sing their songs at first.

Van Dorsselaer, who would become a successful label owner, DJ, remixer, and dance music producer, met Coates, a choreographer and singer, in the early 90s at a Melbourne club where Van Dorsselaer was performing a DJ set. The two would then develop a years-long friendship before finally deciding to make music together, which would see Van Dorsselaer producing the songs, Coates writing the lyrics, and then the both of them trying to find other people to sing the songs that they had formulated.

The first vocalist that Madison Avenue enlisted was a woman named Kellie Wolfgram, who sang on the group’s debut single, “Fly.” Wolfgram was then picked again to provide vocals for their second single, too, 1999’s “Don’t Call Me Baby,” but the plan suddenly changed after Van Dorsselaer and Coates realized that they actually had another singer in mind, one with tons of awe-inspiring spunk and swagger: Cheyne Coates herself.

See, Coates at first had provided a vocal guiding track for Wolfgram so she could get an idea of what Coates and Van Dorsselaer wanted, but Andy and Cheyne soon realized that Cheyne’s own vocals were actually better suited for the track. And you’d think that someone who graced a song with that much attitude and gravitas would’ve been an obvious choice from the get-go, but as it turns out, that simply just was not the case; it took a bit of time for Madison Avenue to realize that what they had had originally was actually quite good enough.

“Don’t Call Me Baby” was then released on Van Dorsselaer’s label, Vicious Vinyl, which had a production and distribution deal with Virgin/EMI Australia at the time. The song became popular in the Aussie clubs, but it was Virgin/EMI who were able to get it to radio, where it then flourished with mainstream pop audiences across the country, launching it to #2 on the charts and eventually triple-platinum status.

However, the song didn’t originally fare so well in the UK. Released in Australia in October 1999, “Don’t Call Me Baby” worked as a spring-and-then-summer hit there, but it was released the following month in the UK, and naturally, they weren’t on that same seasonal vibe as Australia, so while the song did well in the UK clubs, radio decided to pretty much sidestep it.

But then a bootleg that mixed “Don’t Call Me Baby” with “Disco Babes From Outer Space” by Babe Instinct surfaced and received serious play in UK clubs, leading to 15,000 copies sold, which then forced Sony UK’s hand, who had US and UK rights to “Don’t Call Me Baby,” to re-release it. And at that point, UK radio stations were more than willing to play it. The song then went all the way to #1 overall and #2 on the country’s dance chart, while also earning gold status.

And while “Don’t Call Me Baby” proceeded to take much of the rest of Europe by storm with a bunch of top-10 placements, it did not achieve nearly the same fate in the US. It tore up dancefloors across the country and achieved #1 status on Billboard’s dance chart, yes, but it only got to #88 on the Hot 100, which, honestly, kind of feels like a crime! I think if it had been promoted well enough, this jam would’ve killed it in America, but I guess since top 40 radio wasn’t really too much in the business of playing house music in 1999 and 2000, Sony didn’t wanna throw money at a song that a path hadn’t been previously carved for. It’s understandable, but it was also probably dead fucking wrong!

Anyway, this song’s a goddamn bop. For one, Coates’ varying vocalizing is fantastically catchy. It’s not so much the notes that she provides, although her briefly, slightly higher-pitched lines within the chorus that differentiate from her overall tone throughout the rest of the track makes for a subtly killer touch; it’s moreso her changing of pace and how she switches from a free-flowing, sing-songy wateriness in the lines of her pre-chorus, where the last syllable of one line connects seamlessly into the first syllable of the next line, and all within a single breath:

Don’t think that I’m not strong I’m the one to take you on Don’t underestimate me, boy I’ll make you sorry you were born

To a couple lines later, with the much sharper and much more economical, putting-her-foot-down,

Don’t. Call. Me. Baby.

It really is a thing of pop lyric songcraft brilliance.

And on the production side, Van Dorsselaer cobbled together an equally catchy funky house groove by utilizing and re-working a handful of samples from the opening seconds of Pino D'Angiò’s silly 1980 Italo-disco classic, “Ma Quale Idea,” which actually based its bassline off of McFadden & Whitehead’s super popular disco hit, “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.” Van Dorsselaer brought his construction made of samples up to a house music speed, added a 4/4 kick drum, claps, and hats, and then threw in a searing, high-pitched string pad for the chorus. And that string pad goes well with those points when Coates also raises her own vocal tone for that little bit, too. Also, there’s parts in “Ma Quale Idea” where D'Angiò sings at a noticeably rapid-fire pace, and, conceptually, it’s not really all that unlike what Coates does on the pre-chorus of her own song, although Coates’ parts don’t sound nearly as absurd, so I wonder if Madison Avenue got their idea for that speedier delivery from this song that they wound up sampling so liberally 🤔.

Much to my own and what should also be your surprise, Madison Avenue was the first dance act to top the Australian charts (“Who the Hell Are You”) and also the first Australian dance act to top the UK charts as well (“Don’t Call Me Baby”). You’d think that both of those honors would have belonged to Australia’s own undisputed dance-pop queen, Kylie Minogue, but they absolutely do not. Madison Avenue actually got there first, and as far as Aussie dance goes, they completely owned ‘99 and 2000. 

“Don’t Call Me Baby” is a song that manages to fit perfectly well on not just a late 90s-early aughts pop playlist, but also a house playlist that spans that same time period. And I don’t think that there’s that many songs from 1999 that you could say that about. I mean, along with its promotion and club success, this song’s inherent dynamism is the reason why it was included on both a bunch of pop comps as well as more dance-focused comps at the turn of the millennium, like Ministry of Sound’s The Annual 2000, which was mixed by Judge Jules and Tall Paul, and appears on Tall Paul’s side of the mix.

This one’s a tremendous tune that more than deserved all the praise, awards, and airplay that it received. Apparently Cheyne Coates grew pretty tired of it not all that long after its release, but I sure as hell haven’t and hopefully you won't either!

On Saturday, October 21, 1978, at 6:19 p.m., 20-year-old Frederick Valentich took off from Moorabbin Airport just south of Melbourne, Australia, for what was supposed to be a routine training and pleasure flight over Bass Strait to King Island. A serious student aviator, Valentich had been flying for two years and had accumulated over 150 hours of solo flying time in his goal to one day become a commercial airline pilot. Although rated for night flying by instrument, the sun was still up, and with clear visibility and good weather, there was no reason Valentich shouldn’t have easily completed this trip, which he’d taken several times before. However, just over halfway through the flight at 7:06 p.m., Valentich contacted Melbourne Flight Service Unit and reported seeing an unidentified craft above him, traveling at high speed and shining four bright lights. Valentich would radio back a few minutes later that it didn’t appear to be any known aircraft, and now it had even more unusual characteristics: it was long, shiny metallic, and a green light was emanating from it. Even more unsettling, this craft he described was deliberately toying with him as it orbited above while his plane’s engine was sputtering. At 7:11 p.m., the last statement anyone would hear from Valentich would be that the object was still hovering and that it was not an aircraft. Valentich and his plane had vanished at that moment, but whether it was an elaborate hoax, a deliberate crash, or merely a misidentification combined with a mechanical failure, no investigation has been able to determine. What is not in doubt is that the case of Frederick Valentich remains one of Australia’s biggest aviation mysteries, if not in all of UFO lore.

Trump administration backs off plan requiring international students to take face-to-face classes (Washington Post) The Trump administration on Tuesday dropped its much-criticized plan to require international college students to leave the United States unless they are enrolled in the fall term in at least one face-to-face class. The abrupt reversal, disclosed in a federal court in Boston, came a little more than a week after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued an edict that stunned U.S. higher education leaders and students worldwide. Under the July 6 policy from ICE, international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities for the fall semester faced a mandate to take at least one course in person. Those students, ICE said, “may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States.” That mandate posed a major obstacle to plans for online teaching and learning that colleges are developing in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology had sued to block the new policy. In a hearing in that case on Tuesday, held before U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs, the judge announced that the schools and the federal government had reached an agreement that made the lawsuit moot. Separately, 20 state attorneys general had also challenged the guidance in court in recent days.

Patients are still delaying essential care out of fear of coronavirus (Washington Post) Jim Johnson was elated when his hip replacement, canceled in March along with other elective surgeries, finally was performed in May. For months, his pain had been so severe he couldn’t sleep, golf or do his job. Just a few weeks after the operation, he tossed his cane away. Hospitals and doctors practices across the country are hoping there are a lot more Jim Johnsons out there—patients willing to shake off fears about the coronavirus and come back for tests and treatments put on hold early in the pandemic. Yet persuading them to return for non-emergency care is a tricky message right now, with the virus slamming the South and West. In parts of Texas, Arizona, Florida and other states, elective procedures have been halted again. For some patients, the spike in infections is reigniting fears about catching the virus in a hospital or a doctor’s office. Doctors worry that could undermine their efforts to win people back, and lead to more lives being lost from other, often preventable causes, such as cancer and heart disease. Doctors say “elective procedures,” including for cancer, can’t be delayed indefinitely without ill effects. Hospitals, meanwhile, see orthopedic, cardiac and cancer surgeries as their key to survival after losing billions of dollars on the shutdown of lucrative procedures.

Chaotic protests prompt soul-searching in Portland, Oregon (AP) Nearly two months of nightly protests that have devolved into violent clashes with police have prompted soul-searching in Portland, Oregon, a city that prides itself on its progressive reputation but is increasingly polarized over how to handle the unrest. Divisions have deepened among elected officials about the legitimacy of the more violent protests—striking at the heart of Portland’s identity as an ultraliberal haven where protest is seen as a badge of honor. Small groups of protesters have set fires, launched fireworks and sprayed graffiti on public buildings, including police precincts and the federal courthouse, leading to nearly nightly clashes with police who have used force that’s caused injuries. Similar unrest engulfed many U.S. cities when Floyd died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck on May 25. But in Portland, which is familiar ground for the loosely organized, far-left activists known as “antifa,” or anti-fascists, the protests never stopped. Drug cartel ‘narco-antennas’ make life dangerous for Mexico’s cell tower repairmen (Reuters) The young technician shut off the electricity at a cellular tower in rural Mexico to begin some routine maintenance. Within 10 minutes, he had company: three armed men dressed in fatigues emblazoned with the logo of a major drug cartel. The traffickers had a particular interest in that tower, owned by Boston-based American Tower Corp, which rents space to carriers on its thousands of cellular sites in Mexico. The cartel had installed its own antennas on the structure to support their two-way radios, but the contractor had unwittingly blacked out the shadowy network. The visitors let him off with a warning. The contractor had disrupted a small link in a vast criminal network that spans much of Mexico. In addition to high-end encrypted cell phones and popular messaging apps, traffickers still rely heavily on two-way radios like the ones police and firefighters use to coordinate their teams on the ground, six law enforcement experts on both sides of the border told Reuters. Traffickers often erect their own radio antennas in rural areas. They also install so-called parasite antennas on existing cell towers, layering their criminal communications network on top of the official one. By piggybacking on telecom companies’ infrastructure, cartels save money and evade detection since their own towers are more easily spotted and torn down, law enforcement experts said.

Massive flooding in Southern China (Foreign Policy) Floods in Southern China are a recurring threat, but they are worse than ever this year—with some 38 million people evacuated and at least 141 dead. Rainfall has been double than the predicted amount in many places, threatening millions of lives and numerous important cultural sites. Thousands of soldiers have been dispatched to help shore up defenses against the rising tides. Water control has been a preoccupation for every Chinese ruler, and it will only worsen with climate change. China’s worst-known flooding, in 1931, killed over 2 million people.

South China Sea positions (Foreign Policy) The United States has dispatched two aircraft carriers—likely to be backed by British support—to the South China Sea, increasing the possibility of a regional flash point. It has also declared its formal alignment against China’s disputed claims for the first time, saying that it would use “all tools” to oppose them. In the last decade, China has made significant gains in the South China Sea, building a formidable infrastructure of artificial islands to act as bases while strengthening its naval militia. It is also increasingly aggressive in challenging rival claimants, including stalking Vietnamese oil ships and clashing with fishing boats. The U.S. move is long overdue, but it’s also risky: Xi stakes considerable credibility on the South China Sea claims, and there’s no likelihood of Beijing backing down. The pressure on Chinese officials and military personnel to demonstrate their nationalist enthusiasm is growing, increasing the chance of serious conflict similar to the deadly clash on the Indian border.

Trump signs Hong Kong sanctions law (Foreign Policy) On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump continued a week of moves against China by signing a new law that imposes sanctions on Chinese banks doing business with Chinese officials involved with new national security laws in Hong Kong. The resurgence of the virus could add to the growing pressure on policymakers to shore up the world’s No. 3 economy, which analysts say is set to shrink at its fastest pace in decades this fiscal year due to the pandemic. “We are in a situation where we should issue warnings to citizens and businesses,” Koike told a press conference, urging residents to refrain from unnecessary travel.

Australia F1 rules out fan ban in wake of Bahrain GP move - other sports

Australian Formula One chiefs Monday ruled out any chance of the opening grand prix of the year following the lead of Bahrain and barring spectators because of the coronavirus.On Sunday it was announced that the season’s second race in Bahrain would go ahead without fans in a bid to prevent a spread of the deadly virus that has forced a growing number of sports events to be cancelled, postponed or played behind closed doors.But Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Andrew Westacott said that won’t be happening in Melbourne.“Not at all,” he told Melbourne radio station SEN when asked if barring fans was being considered.“When you look at 86,000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last night, and the footy the week after, we’ve got to go around things sensibly and keep moving on through life while taking the necessary precautions.” A world record crowd of 86,174 for a women’s cricket game crammed the MCG on Sunday evening to see Australia beat India in the Twenty20 World Cup final.Big crowds are also expected for the start of the Australian Football League season later this month, despite the number of coronavirus cases rising to 93 on Monday.Most Formula One teams are already in Australia or en route, including powerhouse Ferrari and Alpha Tauri from their bases in Italy, where swathes of the country are now in lockdown in a bid to halt the spread of the virus.There were fears that the Australian government could bar travel from Italy, which would have prevented staff from the two teams being at the grand prix.But it has yet to do so with travellers from Italy still granted entry with more stringent health checks.“The interesting thing is the Italian freight. The Alpha Tauri cars and the Ferrari cars are on their way from Melbourne (airport) as we speak, so it’s really good. In terms of career achievements, Nadal is in a different league to Kyrgios.

The 33-year-old Spaniard has won everything the sport has to offer in a glittering career – which has brought 19 Grand Slam titles and automatic entry into every serious conversation debating who is the greatest male player of all time.

Kyrgios, meanwhile, is still to transfer a precocious and natural talent into mounting serious challenges for the biggest titles.

In a nutshell, that is why the pair haven’t seen eye-to-eye.

Nadal’s meticulous pursuit of success dominates every area of his life. He allowed himself a 24-hour honeymoon after marrying long-term partner Xisco Perello in October.

The more relaxed demeanour of Kyrgios, who can often be spotted in the local bars and pubs after Grand Slam matches, is a stark contrast.

And it irks Nadal.

“At the end of the day, we’re two different tennis players. We go about it completely different,” says Kyrgios, who is seeded 23rd.

Kyrgios has previously described Nadal as “super salty”, while Nadal has been visibly irritated by the Australian’s erratic on-court behaviour in the past.

To add further spice, Kyrgios cheekily mocked Nadal’s superstitious service routine in his second-round win over France’s Gilles Simon.

“I don’t really know Rafa. I’ve never hung out with him or anything like that,” Kyrgios said after his third-round win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov.

“I don’t really dislike him. I don’t know him at all. I’m sure he’s OK.”

Re-sale tickets for the keenly-anticipated match on the 15,000-capacity Laver are close to A$500 (£260), according to Australian newspaper The Herald, even eclipsing the price of those for the in-demand National Rugby League and Australian Football League grand finals.

It all started back in 2014 when Nadal – then ranked number one, as he is now – was beaten by a fresh-faced 19-year-old Kyrgios in the Wimbledon last 16.

A few weeks later, Kyrgios took his opportunity to hit back. That seemed to be triggered by Nadal’s uncle and former coach Toni claiming Kyrgios “lacked education”.

In an interview with the ‘No Challenges Remaining’ podcast,Kyrgios said: “He’s my polar opposite. Literally my polar opposite. And he’s super salty.

“When he wins, it’s fine, he won’t say anything bad, he’ll credit the opponent – ‘he competed well today, he’s a great player’ – but then as soon as I beat him, it’s just like ‘he has no respect for me, my fans and no respect to the game’.”

After China imposed a new security law on Hong Kong, Facebook, Google, Facebook-owned WhatsApp, Twitter and some other digital companies said they would temporarily stop complying with the Hong Kong authorities’ requests for user data. Here’s what Shira Ovide, from our On Tech newsletter, has to say about their decision.

Going up against the new law could force those companies to shut down service in Hong Kong. It would also be a public defiance of China’s government that we rarely see from global companies. No one knows what happens next.

U.S. internet companies face hard calls as they decide how and whether to comply with the divergent laws and norms of each country they operate in without violating their own missions.

When it comes to China, those complications are multiplied by a thousand. The government and some of its supportive citizens are willing to punish global companies and organizations like the National Basketball Association that don’t go along with the government’s views of itself or the world.

Companies with business in China have twisted themselves in knots, for example, trying not to offend the government by appearing to side with Hong Kong’s demonstrators pressing for autonomy.

This Hong Kong law, however, presents the U.S. internet powers with one of those hard choices multiplied by a thousand. If they go along with China’s new law, they are likely to face backlash from American politicians and their own employees.

If they don’t comply, China might make it impossible for the American internet companies to continue to operate in Hong Kong. It might seize the tech companies’ offices in the city or even arrest their employees. You can imagine how the U.S. government would respond to that.

Even while they’re banned in China, the internet companies might not be able to avoid trouble with China.
