This is a collection of entries for the Twisted Tarot blog event for February 2022 to March 2022. Each main NRC student was assigned to a major arcana, then each one would be briefly explore the meanings and motifs of the assigned arcana as it pertained to the matched TWST boy.

These Twisted Tarot pieces were not request-based; it was a countdown style writing prompt challenge for myself. Please do not send me tarot requests; I will not accept them.

The Tower

Featuring @ramshacklerumble 's Yuu, Gia.

As you all may have guessed, I don't have enough TWST OCs to completely fill up the Major Arcana. So... I decided to call in some help and reached out to a few friends that I have developed dynamics and interactions with over the course of the year. I consulted them on picking out which OCs and assigning them to the cards. I also have kept them in the loop regarding WIPs and sketch ideas, to make sure I am representing their OCs adequately. I'm not going to lie, it's been a wonderful way to get to know folks's OCs on a deeper level.

I personsally don't have a Yuu for a handful of reasons. I've found it honestly makes it much easier to collab with other people, and to be honest, I personally struggle with the idea of self-inserts. Not that I have anything against them, but I really struggle conceptually with imagining myself in fictional settings. So the fact that there are other folks I can happily work with who really love their yuusonas makes it an all-around better time.

Following the actual story of TWST, Gia (Yuu) felt like the most accurate choice for representing the Tower. The day that the Ramshackle Prefect showed up was the day things rapidly began to change at NRC. The collective understanding about how "things were supposed to go" was instantly put into question, and incident after incident without repreive unfolded with the Prefect at the crux of it. The Prefect is the Tower.

And like a week later they randomly get a promotion or a 1000$ art commission or something or just straight up find a stupid amount of money on the ground and rugginald bucchiland is like

Azul comes knocking at their door the next day with the aura of an eager salesman and the intentions of an FBI interrogator

rugginald bucchiland is his official name now, mickey mouse told me himself.

Something I have always wondered about isekai settings is if magic from one world would even work in another because like. Would the forces you are attempting to invoke be able to respond? I like the image of the universe tapping on the window between worlds separating you to try and get your attention because they have some good luck they want to send your way but being unable to make it through.

But assuming it does work I feel like Yuu would need to be in witness protection from Azul. Or like to successfully reverse psychology him into thinking that it wouldn't really be his money if he made it off their spells because he didn't really work for it and strike at his ego a lot little bit.

TWST Boys as Tarot Cards.

So apparently there's a theory that the 22 main characters of Twisted Wonderland are based on the 22 cards of the Major Arcana. I doubt it. (Compare to another visual novel, The Arcana, in which the characters are very obviously based on the Major Arcana.) But I got curious, and decided to arrange the boys according to the Major Arcana, just for fun:

0. The Fool — Ace An incoming freshman who just wants to have fun, and usually ends up along for the ride. He’s sort of an audience surrogate alongside Yuu. (It should really be Yuu in this position; Ace is obviously the Page of Cups. But we’re not doing the minor arcana.)

The Magician — Deuce Hardly the most powerful mage in the main cast, but one with the most potential, just at the edge of achieving his dreams. Also, his signature spell is pretty OP.

The High Priestess — Jade This one doesn’t fit perfectly, but I think it suits Jade’s role as Azul’s second-in-command, a mysterious and composed person who always knows more than he lets on.

The Emperor — Malleus This one’s pretty self-explanatory.

The Empress — Vil Also pretty self-explanatory. He’s not what I would call nurturing, but he embodies feminine power more than anyone else in the main cast.

The Chariot — Azul Defined by his ambition and determination, Azul grabs onto success with all eight legs.

The Lovers — Rook Obsessed with beauty, and torn between Vil and Neige at one point..

The Hierophant — Lilia The oldest member of the main cast, always willing to share his wisdom and life advice, with a sense of humor. (It would be funny to put him at The Hanged Man, since he’s always hanging upside-down, but it doesn’t suit his character.)

Strength — Jack I almost put Leona here (it’s usually a lion on the card), but Jack is a better fit. He’s streadfast, dedicated, a dependable friend, and has the most self-mastery of the freshmen.

The Hermit — Idia Self-explanatory.

The Wheel of Fortune — Floyd An unpredictable wild card.

Justice — Riddle Severe and unyielding, his devotion to the rules is second to none, and he administers harsh punishments for transgression. He’s not actually as cruel and arbitrary as he initially comes across, though, and his sense of justice becomes fairer.

The Hanged Man — Sebek It’s a little early to tell (I haven’t gotten up to date with book 7 because I’m stuck on those battle maps), but Sebek seems to be undergoing one of the most dramatic transformations of any of the main characters. He’s not exactly passive, but that’s part of the point — he needs to slow down and gain some maturity before he can do anything.

Death — Ortho It makes sense to put one of the Hades boys in this position, and… if ya know, ya know. Ortho’s story is also about breaking a state of stagnancy, ensuring that things change and move forward.

Temperance — Trey The most level-headed of the main cast, he’s always trying to temper Riddle’s wrath and keep things in balance. Also, he likes mixing things together to create tasty treats!

The Devil — Jamil The character most defined by limitation. He’s always holding himself back because of the hopeless situation he’s trapped in. He’s also duplicitous and a liar, he harbors spite, and and he holds all of Scarabia in bondage.

The Tower — Epel I’m putting him here just because he’s a little force of mass destruction! He doesn’t actually cause any true disasters or act as the harbinger of one.

The Star — Cater He approaches every situation with optimism, and tries to get the most out of life, despite (or because of) his own feelings. (Also, diamonds!)

The Moon — Leona After a lot of debating, I finally put Leona here. He’s not as mysterious as Jamil or Jade, but he’s quietly dealing with a lot of insecurity and fear, which he focuses on to the detriment of his strengths. I’ll be interested to see what he dreams about.

The Sun — Kalim A little ray of sunshine, the most genuinely happy of all the characters, who sees the good in everyone and brings joy wherever he goes.

Judgement — Silver Again, it’s a little early to tell, but Silver seems to be bringing a reckoning. He may be his friend’s only chance at redemption. Silver tends to take things at face value and assume the best of people, regardless of who they are or what they’ve done.

The World — Ruggie Through process of elimination, Ruggie arrives here. If I were making this an actual tarot deck, Ruggie would definitely be the Knight of Pentacles, and NRC itself would be The World.

The Fool, in my mind, represents both Yuu and Grim, just as they’re the same in the fact that they’re counted as one student, they’re also counted as one card. Since there’s no definitively canon Yuu, I made the design of his bag covered in shrimp to represent the Prefect, and also added stickers to the stick for the current manga Yuu’s, a kendo stick for Yuuken, a black belt for Yuuka and a frying pan for Yuuta. Maybe when we get more Yuu’s I’ll continue to add stickers (none for Yuuya though sadly)

I included him holding tarot cards due to his profile, and kept the fabulous sparkles from the original. My Cottagecore heart is a sucker for the green and yellow combination, so his outfit was fun to draw.
