I feel like the whole stop hating on teen girls issue is valid but like... can we not support a writer who writes teen girls in such problematic ways and stories?

I want to attempt a somewhat articulate stance on this; like you said, both sides of the argument is valid. here's the thing, though: people like sjm and stephenie meyer don't need an apology and their works don't need to be redeemed or deserve any renaissance at the cost of the innumerable poc and any other marginalised groups they misrepresented and disrespected through their works. there are a large number of things teen girls are bashed for liking: boy bands, kpop, liking any anime show, makeup, etc, but while all of these come with their own baggage– the whole makeup is empowering mantra of barbie feminists in the 21st century etc– NONE come close to the harmful stereotypes perpetuated and the long-standing misconceptions about relationships and femininity as advocated by these two (white!! privileged!! openly racist!!!) authors (one of whom is anti-Indigenous and the other an open Z1onist notorious for her twisted takes on gender and race, and for using trauma narratives of BIPOC to promote her own books). and so, reducing the crux of their work to a kind of harmless fun for teen girls is oversimplification. these books aren't the equivalent of winx club or crying over one direction or anything, they are literally racist garbage whose merits are outnumbered by their flaws (which is where they fall short of hp and pjo, despite the creators of both these series ALSO being sketchy and problematic).

Also note when these people are defending the representation of femininity in twilight it's always bella and alice in question and never rosalie or leah. You know, the two actually compelling women from the narrative. Embarassment. Positing a weak defence of delicate white femininity and PREHISTORIC representation of comp het relations is what this renaissance is about, not about say, actually attempting any nuanced criticism of the text, or elevating the voices of the Quileute people, whose culture was hijacked by this white lady for her own sweet profits. It's just an argument made by Tumblr and twitter so that they can feel less guilty about making their aesthetic moodboards.

Only about 20% of the Twilight antis are adolescent hp/thg fans making cringey posts that bordered on condescension, posts about sparkling vampires and suchlike. Maybe there was a similar 10% of dudebros on reddit (they are everywhere, it's not as if asoiaf or any other fandoms don't have them). The rest was actual proper criticism and trying to pass of all this discourse on race, gender and power imbalance as boo hoo meanies is just....very white behaviour.

Fandom in general has this fuckass tendency to consider bigotry and open racism as "drama" to incite "discourse": a kind of behavior that has resulted in the rampant anti intellectualism of booktok, booktwt and litblr. Twilight wasn't a harmless campy bisexual paranormal fantasy. We need to stop twisting narratives on purpose.
