Twilight/Reader Head-cannons and Thought Ideas (Part I)
This is a quick thought idea and head-cannons that I whipped up. This has a main focus on the Linked Universe Twilight, but can also be read as Twilight Princess Link.
Absolutely did not edit it since I don’t have time, so I apologize for any errors.
If you enjoy, please leave a comment and let me know if you’d like to see something else!
Tumblr media
Twilight loooves to take care of you. His love language is most definitely acts of service.
Having a generally bad day? He will wrap you up in the coziest blanket, make you a warm beverage, and offer to read the cheesiest romance book out loud to you.
Working or studying long hours? No worries. He will cook dinner and make sure there are leftovers for you tomorrow.
If he sees you cooking, he would come up behind you and wrap his arms around your waist and give you a little peck on the cheek.
The others would tease him whenever he watches you interact with children. He looks so starstruck and in awe at the sight of you laughing and playing.
Would absolutely be daydreaming about a life with you.
If you don’t want children? He would be heartbroken, but ultimately respects your decision. After all, if you don’t want to be a parent then why would he force you.
He could have also had a change of heart after his adventure with Midna, and potentially could have more duties in the castle due to being the Hero.
Twilight absolutely engages in tickle fights with you, just because he loves to hear you laugh. It’s his favorite sound in the world.
He also would love to chase you through the woods in a game of one sided tag.
This has nothing to do with him transforming into a wolf. He just loves to hear you giggle out of nervousness and it gives him a chance to show off his pursuit skills.
While traveling with the chain, Twilight would offer to share his bedroll with you and cuddle with you to stay warm.
He would also constantly be asking you if you are alright. Are you hurt? Uncomfortable? Feet in pain from walking? You can ride on Epona for a while.
If you’ve never learned to ride a horse, he would jump at the opportunity to show you.
You’re in close proximity with one another and his chest would be up against your back. What else do I need to say?
If you’re an avid reader, this man would build you an entire bookshelf to expand his collection of books so you could add yours as well. But he would only do this if he’s heavily considering asking you for your hand in marriage.
Merging bookshelves is practically a marriage proposal anyways.
If you are not from his Hyrule but rather from our dimension, he would try to learn English to the best of his ability considering his Hylian is relatively close in the alphabet. .
Could see a strong bonding activity between the two of you being renting children books from local libraries so the two of you could learn each others language.
Twilight, being the gentleman he is, would open doors for you and gently guide you through it by resting his hand on your lower back. He would also walk behind you on stairs and help you dismount from Epona.
If he senses that you are uncomfortable in a situation, he would whisper in your ear and ask if you would want to escape from it. If you answer yes, he would create an excuse without involving you and lead you away from it.
If you have anxiety, he would ask more frequently to make sure your anxiety isn’t acting up too much. But he would also encourage you to engage in these situations since avoiding social situations/the stressor feeds the anxiety monster. But, if it becomes too much or you ask, he will lead you away.
He is the type of person to, in private, get to a Sky level of affections. Loves nuzzling you, kissing you periodically and randomly, resting a hand on you. This man is stuck to you like glue in private.
Contrastingly though, in public he is more reserved. He will still want to hold your hand or rest his hand on your back. But refrains from more intimate signs of affection, such as kissing you on the lips.
But despite his control over his emotions, he does have the tendency to get jealous. And oh boy when he does get jealous, he will be all over you. Resting his face against your head while you talk, arms wrapped around your waist, and giving the darkest glare to whomever is gaining your attention.

To protect a wolf (Twilight)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Twilight x reader -pre relationship
Rating: T for language and some blood
Summary: While Twilight is incapacitated, you step up to protect him. Obviously, he realizes he loves you at the worst time. But you both take care of each other after.
Warnings: Some blood, some fighting, cursing
Other: Let me know if I missed anything
-------
This dungeon might actually kill him. Twilight can barley thing straight he hurts so much.
And you're with him - you need his help. He can't just quit.
But you're in the final room facing down the boss. And Twilight's barley able to move.
His leg is broken in at least three places. He's pretty sure the world shouldn't be spotty, and he is bleeding out of his ribs.
And to top it all of it's a water dungeon.
The boss is large, a squid like creature that seems to spit poison ink. There's a weak spot - an eye atop its head.
Always with the eyes.
Fuck his life.
"(Y/n)." He tries.
"Shut up." You hiss, drawing attention to yourself by smacking your sword and shield together.
He really can't do anything but trust to roll out of the way of attacks. He just wants to keep you safe- but he can't even decide which quickly blurring version of you is real.
He hears the fight, sword slashing and shield clanging. He heard movement and curses.
Feels the air move with you and the boss.
He can hear you taunt it.
He hears it fall as you attack it.
He hears the intimidating roar as it gets up.
He can't see shit-
But he hears it all.
He hears your curse and inve as something cracks.
He hears you take some new injury
He even hears the snarling curse as you drive something into the beast.
He bets you still look so beautiful. You always do.
What is he doing thinking about that?
You're in danger-
"Die you bitch!" Yoir voice cuts through his thoughts.
Well, you're still alive. That's very good. He'd hate to lose you before he told you he loved you.
Wait-
Fuck.
This new information is not helpful at all. It's also not surprising.
The sound fades out as you fight the boss, time lost to him.
He doesn't know how long has passed when he opens his eyes again... when did he close them?
"Twi... Link?" You call, kneeling in front of him.
"Hm?"
"I'm going to have to carry you out. I don't have any healing items."
"I can walk-"
"Bullshit. You could barely roll over. I'm going to carry you."
"Bu' 'm too heavy." He slurs out.
"You're really not." You say, relying on your own farm life spent wrestling goats, cows, and horses to the ground when needed.
He just groans.
You move so your kneeling on one knee, the othe in front of you.
He groans louder as you slide your arms under him. One around his shoulders and one under his knees.
"Shhh, I got you Twi. It's okay."
"I'm sorry." He manages.
"Don't be." You say quickly, standing and pulling him off the ground with you.
You hold him close to you, straining under his weight. He's pure muscle. You don't know why you thought you could carry him on a broken ankle without issue.
But you have to get hum out. Thank god for adrenaline.
If Twilight were even slightly more aware he'd demand you leave and come back for him. You're bleeding profusely from your stomach. Along with other places.
You walk, carrying him and your all's things out of the dungeon, wincing every other step.
He's concious but only just.
You walk to camp - each step feeling like you're being punished.
The others see you and rush forwards.
"What happened?!"
"Twilight is hurt. You gotta help him."
"You're hurt too." Legend says.
"Not bad." You say, obviously unaware of how injured you are.
Time takes Twilight from you, moving him so he's laying on the ground just so.
Hyrule releases a fairy over Twilight first. Then he starts in with healing magic.
"Is the world supposed to turn black?" You ask, feeling a lot weaker with no notice.
Time turns to you, "What-"
You collapse as your ears start to ring. You probably should have paid more attention to your own condition. Whoops.
.......
Twilight wakes up with a mouth like the desert and a pounding headache- but he's alive and well. Mostly.
He looks around, finding Hyrule and Wild nearby- but you're not in his sight.
"Where’s-" he summons spit to swallow to wet his mouth, "Where’s (Y/n)?"
Hyrule turns, looking relived to see the wolf shifter awake. "Hey, how do you feel?"
"Where is (Y/n)?" Twilight asks again, more impatient.
"They're resting at an inn. With both of you having lost a lot of blood, old man decided we'd need to stay in an inn for a bit. "Legend says from behind Wild.
"Why aren't we there?"
"Your leg needed to heal all the way before we moved you. They - well, they needed a bed."
"They're hurt?"
"Yeah. They are. But they're better now."
"Take me to them." Twilight says, pushing to sit up.
"Okay. Just wait - Wild's almost done with the hearty stew."
"Don't care, I need to make sure-"
"Twilight. "Sky says gently, "They worked hard to keep you safe, don't insult them by being stubborn and refusing a recovery aid."
"I-" Twilight doesn't known what to say to that.
"Good."
He trusts the boys. He really does!
But after his realization and you taking care of him- he just needs to see you as soon as he can.
He needs to make sure you're okay.
He also needs to figure out how in the name of Ordona to tell you he loves you. But he's way more concerned with your health.
Especially since you woukd have gotten hurt protecting him.
Oh... he really fucked up-
"They aren't mad." Legend says from his spot, "I know they aren't a hero like us- but they can hold their own."
"They shouldn't have had to. I should have protected them better."
Legend makes a face that suggests he'd rather talk to a praticularly stubborn wall than trying to convince Twilight of anything right now.
.......
You wake up to Time fretting over you. His muttering is unnerving paired with the face of grim acceptance.
"Where’s- Where’s Twi?" You ask, looking around and not finding him.
This does nothing to slow your racing heart, finding only Time with you and some dull inn decorating.
"He's at camp. He'll be here shortly."
"Is he okay?"
"Yeah, he's okay."
"Good. I hate squid."
Time snorts at that, seeming relived that you're well enough to be bitter.
"You gave all of us a scare, looked dead when you came to camp, and then collapsed."
"Oh... Whoops."
"You have to be more careful-"
"Twilight would have died. I am not gonna let someone die just cause I'm hurt too!"
"I'm not saying otherwise. I'm just telling you to be more careful."
"Okay. But- is Twi really-"
The door opens with a bang, an exhumed Twilight in the doorway who let's out a breath of air when he sees ypu.
"(Y/n)."
"Twi!"
You try to sit up only to grunt and fall back into bed.
"Stay down," Time says, "You're gonna be sore for a while."
"You're okay." Twilight breathes out, walking over to sit on the bed beside you. "I'm sorry I should have protected you-"
"Don't start that." You manage, "You were really hurt."
"The others said you were too."
"I could walk. You couldn't. It's nothing. "
"(Y/n)." Twilight says sharper than he usually does, "You put yourself in danger for me. Please don't act like I couldn't have done things differently. "
"Twi... I know. It definitely could have gone better. It could have been worse too."
"Yeah."
"I'm really glad you're okay "
Time stands, stretching up, "You're staying in this room too, Twilight. I figured you'd both want to be near eachother. "
"Thank you." You say to Time.
"Seriously though, be careful, (Y/n)."
Twilight has to agree with his mentor.
You just sigh, trying not to move too much. "Okay."
"Good. I'm going to check on dinner plans." Time says before leaving and shutting the door behind him.
Twilight just let's out a breath, "I was worried... when I woke up you weren't there."
"I know. I felt the same way."
"I'm sure." Twilight says, not sure how to tell you that he actually doubts that.
Becuase you obviously care for him but how could you love him back?
"Twiligh- Link." You say, the use of his name making him look up quickly.
"Yes?"
"Don't beat yourself up. Everyone gets hurt."
"I'm supposed to protect you though."
"Why?" You ask, feeling hurt already at the implications of the statement. "I may not be a hero but I can hold my own!"
"It's not that... It's just-" he takes a moment.
How does he tell you that he needs to protect you becuase you are someone he loves. That he loves you romantically. With his whole heart?
You stare, waiting for him to continue and really hoping he has a reason that's not just him being a chosen hero.
Twilight sighs, he might as well just tell you. He can't lie for anything- not to you at least... and a lie woukd just confuse you more.
"Because I love you, (Y/n). And I don't ever want to see you hurt."
You choke a little, suprised and touched. That's definitely a better reason than be Hylia's chosen hero.
"And I don't expect you to feel the same-"
"I do. I do feel the same."
"What?"
"I love you too. Have for a whole now- though typically you confess with flowers and not while someone is in bed looking like shit."
"You look beautiful. "
"You're very biased."
"Yeah."
You smile at him, and while you definitely hurt, you feel better than you did when you passed out. And hey, you might just get a boyfriend out of this.
"We should talk about this more later Twi, but can- you just stay with me?"
"Of course. Can I do anything to make you hurt less?"
"No... I'm probably going to fall asleep again soon honestly. I feel like I was run over by a heard of wild horses."
"Ouch. I'm sorry, Darlin'."
You giggle, "I like that name."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."

Whumptober day 20- found family
I played with so many ideas for this one but settled for Rusl adopting Link. Idk I hc that he adopted Link officially during the temple of time (that’s mentioned in one of my love at twilight fics) and I also headcanon that he discovered his ability to turn into a wolf before the temple. This would probably make more sense with context but hey I’m really good at writing fics without any bdksbsksbsk. Also! I love the idea that the resistance members go with Link into the temples. So Auru goes to the arbiter’s ground and Gerudo desert, Ashei goes to Snowpeak and the Snowpeak ruins, you get the idea. So naturally Rusl goes to the temple of time with Link, also with recent events it actually made sense 😌idk how I feel about this one it’s ok I guess
Warnings: mentions of an injury. This is more wholesome honestly
~~~~~~~~~~~
Rusl was at war with himself. When he returned to Ordon, he had hoped to investigate deeper in the woods, curious about a temple that was rumored to be there. But what he didn’t expect to happen was shooting Link in the leg and discovering his otherworldly ability to transform into a wolf. It was a mess, Rusl’s guilt for hurting the boy that he took under his wing was sheer agony, and the strange imp friend that traveled with Link didn’t make it any better. Link had reassured Rusl over and over again, but he couldn’t forgive himself, not with the way Link limped around, acting as if nothing was wrong.
Link had asked Rusl about the forest and the strange temple hidden within it, and despite the fact that Rusl didn’t want to be near him to avoid hurting him again, he couldn’t let Link investigate the forest alone. He knew that Midna was with him, but he admittedly didn’t trust her with his injury, and Link didn’t know how to take a break even when he was in pain, so he grabbed his beloved golden cuccoo and followed Link into the woods.
Rusl tried to keep his distance from Link, only keeping a protective eye on him, but with how creepy the woods were and how easy it was to get lost, he decided to stick to Link’s side, despite his own mind yelling at him for doing so. Link didn’t seem to mind, he was concentrated on catching a strange child playing a weird tune. As soon as Link saw him, he shot the kid with his bow and arrow, and a new passageway would open. It shocked Rusl, but the child didn’t seem to be injured from it, so he brushed it off and followed Link. Eventually, the child went away and opened a way through the lost woods. What followed next was a whirlwind of events, Link plunged his master sword through a pedestal beyond stone statues, shadow beasts ambushed them, they traveled through time, Link plunged his sword through a pedestal again, stairs appeared, and strange bird-like creatures rushed up the stairs, leaving Rusl baffled.
Link only chuckled awkwardly and entered the temple, and Rusl quickly followed, keeping a close eye on Link. Link seemed rather upbeat, he and Midna were chatting about random things, but he limped along the halls and doors, every limp feeling like a dagger through Rusl’s heart.
The three observed a statue, which stood alone beside a door frame. Rusl frowned, it looked like there would be another statue mirroring the other one, but a spot where it would be was empty. Midna and Link picked up on this as well, and Midna suggested that he turned into a wolf so that he could double check. Rusl didn’t know how being a wolf could confirm that, but he decided not to question it.
Midna held a strange crystal and put it up to Link’s forehead, and he was surrounded by shadows, being replaced with a wolf. Rusl watched with nausea building up inside him. He hadn’t seen his wolf form since he shot him with an arrow, but it was surreal seeing it again, and he had to tell himself that it was Link. It’s ok… that’s your boy… it’s ok…
“You ok, Rusl?”
Rusl looked at Midna who was perched on top of Link. She was smirking at him while Link sniffed the empty area.
“I’m fine, just… feeling a little sick.”
Midna hummed. “Yeah, guess going through time like that is jarring isn’t it?”
“Yeah…”
Midna gave a more genuine smile as Link perked his ears. She looked closer at the empty spot and cheered. “I knew it! A statue was once here! Looks like we’ll need to get it if we want to get through this door.”
Link turned back into a Hylian and winced as he put weight on his leg. Rusl watched him worriedly as he leaned against the wall.
“Link? Are you ok?” He asked, and Link waved it off.
“‘M fine. Transforming with an injury just hurts a lot is all.”
Rusl pursed his lips and looked down. He remembered when he turned into a Hylian before his very eyes with his blasted arrow protruding from his leg. The screams he made still haunted him.
The three traveled through the temple, Rusl being unusually quiet. He kept his distance from Link and Midna, and a couple of times, they got separated due to a door suddenly shutting and locking Rusl out. He was more careful after that.
Eventually, Link grew quiet as well, and he stuck back with Rusl as Midna rambled about the creepy spiders. Rusl felt him glancing at him a couple of times, and when Midna floated away, he turned to the swordsman.
“Rusl… I… is everything alright?” He asked, wringing his hands anxiously.
Rusl stared at him. There was no reason to lie, Link wasn’t a child, but he could feel the relationship was more tense than before. He didn’t know how to bring his feelings up.
“If—if you feel bad about what happened, it’s ok,” Link mumbled. “You didn’t know that was me, and I scared you…”
Rusl shook his head. “It’s not ok, Link. I could’ve killed you. I was— I was trying to kill you! I could never forgive myself if I was the reason that you died and—- spirits above Link it’s not ok!”
“How many times am I gonna have to tell you that it’s ok,” Link said softly.
“How can this be ok? Link I shot you! You’re still limping and you’re pretending everything is fine! I just— I can’t get over this! None of this is ok!”
Link looked down ashamed, and Rusl kicked himself. He didn’t want Link to feel like he was being reprimanded, he did nothing wrong. He sucked in a breath and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Link, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I hurt you. You– you’re like a son to me and I want you to feel safe around me but I ruined that for you, and I don’t want you to feel obligated to stay by me and Uli because I’m upset over this whole situation.” Rusl let out a huff of frustration and looked up at Link, who’s eyes were widened in shock.
“What did you say?”
Rusl stopped and looked at Link confused. “I– I said that-that you’re…” Rusl’s voice trailed off and his eyes widened in realization. Why did he have to bring this up now? He sighed, figuring there was no reason to back track now. “Link, I– I see you as a son. Ever since you came into mine and Uli’s life I’ve felt a sense of responsibility towards you. You felt like a blessing from the goddesses to me. I mean the others feel the same way, Colin adores you and Uli adores you and… I know with recent events you wouldn’t feel the same way but… goddesses we love you like family, Link.”
Tears started welling up in Link’s eyes as he stared at Rusl in shock. Rusl gasped and took a step back, not expecting that reaction.
“I-I’m sorry Link, I didn’t– I didn’t mean to upset you I–”
“You really think that?”
Link’s voice was soft and it wavered as his hands clung to each other. He looked like he was scared to move, but the way he shifted his feet made it look like he wanted to. Rusl sighed.
“Of course I do. I’ve always thought it. That’s why I wanted to teach you sword fighting and why Uli invited you to our dinners and… why we want you to be there when our daughter is born,” Rusl turned away. “Link, me and Uli want you to be apart of our family. Of course it’s all about how you feel, I don’t want to put any pressure on you but–”
Rusl was interrupted as Link ran to him, wrapping his arms around his neck.
“I always wanted to be a part of a family,” Link cried, burying his face in Rusl’s neck. Rusl quickly wrapped his arms around his boy despite wanting to keep his distance. They stood there for a moment as Link cried, with Rusl shedding a few tears as well. Midna finally came back and watched the two with a smirk, her head tilted in a teasing manner.
“Oh, so glad you two could make up. Now come on, we got a statue to find!” Midna started tugging at Link’s shirt and he quickly wiped his tears away, stepping back from Rusl. Midna’s smirk softened a bit and she wiped away a lingering tear before floating near a door, watching them from a distance. Link’s face turned a little red and he scratched the back of his head.
“Um… is it… is it ok if I call you ‘pa’ now?” He asked, looking away bashfully. Rusl only chuckled and gave him one more side hug.
“You can call me whatever you’d like, my son.”
Link beamed and rested his head on his shoulder before jogging to where Midna was, despite Rusl cringing at his injured leg. He couldn’t help but laugh at Midna’s scolding, figuring that she could be trusted with Link’s injury. She did punch him in the face in order to protect Link. Rusl felt much better about the injury though. Knowing that Link didn’t at least hate him was relieving, but the fact that Link still cared deeply for him and the rest of the family was truly heartwarming. Though, the memory of Link’s fear filled eyes, his fear of being perceived as a monster, his screams of pain, Rusl never wanted to see him like that ever again. He vowed to himself that Link would feel safe around him, and that he’d never hurt him in anyway, whether it be unwilling or willing.
This is unlikely to be any longer but here is a little thing I wrote where a very young (maybe 5 years old) Hero of Time meets the Hero of Twilight after his adventure.
Tumblr media
Link looked around anxiously. Saria always told him to avoid going into the forest without her but the golden wolf seemed so familiar and warm. It seemed safe and there was a voice that sounded somewhat like hers that told him that it was okay as long as he followed the wolf.
He looked around tearfully, one hand sneaking up towards his mouth where he could gnaw on his fingers. Mido always teased him for it, and Saria always tried to stop him but Link wondered how he was supposed to think without doing it. As he tried to figure out how to get home footsteps came from behind him and Link turned to see who it was, hoping that it was one of the other Kokiri. He looked up and up and blinked confused as he stared up at the person. Link had never seen such tall people in the Forest outside of Stalfos and those were always a good distance from him. The person knelt down so they could see each other better and smiled.
Somehow the warmth that the wolf seemed to give off came from this person too and Link stumbled forwards a few steps. The man held out his arms and easily scooped Link up to hug him. Link sniffed and buried his face against the man’s shoulder.
“Easy little one, you’re safe.”
The voice was deeper than everyone aside from the Great Deku Tree’s and Link felt like it was supposed to sound like that. He sniffed again and tried to keep from crying more because he had been so scared before the man showed up and now he felt like he was safe.
“How about you come with me? I have some food at home if you’re willing to wait.”
Link nodded and tightened his hand into the man’s shirt. He felt the man press his mouth against his head and felt warmed. He knew that it was a gesture of affection. Cautiously he leaned back and looked up at the man’s face taking in the dark lines and the softness that his smile had caused to appear. Shyly he poked his cheek and tried to push it up a little into that smile again. The man laughed softly and muddled his cheek gently causing Link to giggle.
“There you are. Are you okay, Kit?”
Kit? Link tilted his head curiously and the man seemed sheepish.
“Sorry, you just made me think of a fox kit.”
Oh. Link thought about that and smiled happily. He liked foxes, they always knew where fairies played and would show him to them if he asked nicely. Though he needed their help less and less. He gave the man a nod.
“It’s okay for me to call you Kit?”
Link nodded quickly and the man nodded too.
“Okay, Kit. I’m called Link.”
Link trilled softly, the man called Link grinned at that and bumped his nose against Link’s cheek.
“Maybe I should have called you songbird instead.”
Link wrinkled his nose at that and the man laughed.
“Is your name also Link?”
Link looked down at his hand shyly but nodded.
“I see, well I also am called… Twilight. So you can call me Twi or Twilight if that makes it easier.”
It did. Link felt his ears perk up and smiled brightly again. Twilight was also smiling at him.
“How about you stay with me for a little while, Kit?”
Link nodded contently. So far Twilight was much nicer than Mido and some of the other Kokiri and Link was happy to stay with him until the wolf or the golden light took him home again.
Besides… Saria couldn’t get mad at him until Link got back. With that thought in mind Link snuggled closer to Twilight and closed his eyes. Twilight chuckled and hugged him closer, nuzzling his cheek affectionately.
The boy leant in close, touching his nose to the wolf’s and all the wolf felt was an overwhelming grief.
-
The chain end up in a new Hyrule. No one else seems to recognise it, expect the wolf deep inside of Twilight.
The wolf ran through the forest, agile and quick. It never stumbled, never faltered.
A boy ran behind him, laughing. The wolf knew it was a rare sound.
When the two of them reached a glittering waterfall, the wolf flopped down, and the boy tumbled down next to it.
His golden curls shook as he laughed, breathless, and his bright eyes were scrunched tight.
The wolf looked up at him, but the boy’s face was blurry, like it was seeing him through shards of glass. The boy said something, but his voice was strange and echoey. It sounded distorted, and the wolf didn’t understand what he was saying.
The boy leant in close, touching his nose to the wolf’s and all the wolf felt was an overwhelming grief.
-
Something was wrong with this new Hyrule. It wasn’t the fact that they hadn’t come across a single living soul in the 2 days they’d been there, or that monsters roamed around freely large groups, or even the ruins that decorated the land.
It just felt wrong.
“Twilight.” Someone said, startling him out of his thoughts. Time frowned at him, and the others watched on curiously. “I’ve been calling you.”
“Sorry.” He muttered.
“Are you alright?” Hyrule asked from his place across the circle they had arranged themselves into as they rested. “It’s just, you’ve been off since we landed here.”
They didn’t understand. Couldn’t they feel it?
“I’m fine.” Twilight snapped, then regretted it as soon as the words left his mouth. “Sorry.” He mumbled.
“Twilight, you know you can talk to us, right?” Sky said softly.
He looked at the other heroes. “I’m fine.” He repeated, daring them to speak.
No one did.
-
The boy was crying, quietly, like he was afraid of being overheard. The wolf padded over, resting its head on the boy’s knee with a soft whine.
The boy sniffled, stroking the wolf’s fur.
“I—a—omis—kay—.” The boy said. The wolf couldn’t make out what he was saying.
It stood sharply. Something was wrong. The boy looked at him, curiously. Why was he not afraid? Could he not sense her presence?
The wolf felt like it was being pulled away from the boy. His boy. Gently fingers tugged on the gray fur.
“Safe.” The boy whispered.
-
“We’ve been walking for hours.” Wind loudly complained.
The youngest Link dragged his feet as they walked, then yelped in surprise as he tripped.
Warriors sighed as he helped him up. “Winds right. Are we sure this Hyrule isn’t just empty?”
“We don’t get sent somewhere without a reason.” Sky countered, ever faithful to his Goddess.
“I don’t know.” Legend chimed in. “We haven’t seen any signs of life yet.”
“No Hylian’s, but there is life.” Hyrule said.
Legend shrugged in reply. “Let’s just hope the hero of this world isn’t a centipede.”
How dare they. The hero had been through the same amount as any of them. Twilight shook his head. He didn’t know where those thoughts had come from.
“We’ll be fine if we keep following the river.” Four reasoned. “There has to be a settlement somewhere.”
“Ah-ha!” Wind suddenly exclaimed, running forward. “Over there!”
Warriors was the first person to see what he was looking at. “I think… I think those are ruins.
“What are those things?” Sky asked, frowning. “Some kind of machines?”
“Come on.” Time said. “That looks like a main road, so we should check it out.
As they waded through the strange machines, towards the ruins Warriors said looked like an old fort, something deep inside Twilight kept screaming at him: RUN. DANGER.
When he stopped walking, Time was the first person to notice.
“Pup? What’s wrong.”
Everyone else stopped.
“We can’t go there.” He said.
Time frowned. “Why not?” He asked.
RUN. DANGER. SCARED.
Twilight’s words came out in a haunted whisper. “He didn’t like it. We never went this way.”
Everyone else looked confused.
“Who?” Warriors asked.
“We can’t go this way.” Twilight repeated.
“Why not, Pup?”
RUN. DANGER. SCARED. SORRY.
“I said we can’t!” Twilight clenched his fists, wolf inside him begging to be let out.
Make them understand. It growled. Bad place. Bad memories.
“If Twilight says we can’t, we should trust him.” Time said. “We’ll go the other way.
“Trust what.” Legend snorted. “A feeling?”
“Sometimes a feeling is the difference between life and death.” Sky told him. “Come on.”
-
The wolf walked along side the boy. The boy was tense, like he was expecting the metal creatures to suddenly wake and grab them.
The wolf didn’t sense any danger, though it could feel the fear slithering off his boy in waves. Fear reached into the deepest parts of you and made you stupid, reckless.
The wolf snorted to let the boy know not to be afraid.
‘I WILL LOOK AFTER YOU.’
It said.
‘LOOK AFTER CUB.’
‘no. danger.’ The cub replied.
‘NO DANGER.’ The wolf assured. ‘PROTECT YOU.’
Cub looked away.
-
Twilight felt better as they walked away from the old fort. They walked for a while, then finally came across a a building this appeared to be a stable.
“People!” Wind cheered, running ahead.
When the rest of them reached the stable, Time and Sky went to talk to the stable owner while the others rested for a moment.
The others wanted to stay for the night, but Twilight was getting restless.
‘FIND HIM.’ The wolf snarled. Twilight didn’t know who he was meant to be looking for, but the ache in his chest made him want to cry and scream and curse.
“We’ll wait until morning then head that direction.” Time said as he pointed. “If we follow the path on foot we’ll arrive in Kakariko village in a couple days.”
Everyone groaned.
“All we do in this Hyrule is walk.” Legend complained.
“Twilight?”
Twilight looked up at the sound of his name. Everyone was looking at him again.
“You zoned out.” Hyrule said. “Are you sure you’re ok?”
Twilight forced a smile on his face. “I’m fine.”
-
His cub put his head down as they walked through the village. The wolf snarled at the onlookers, and they turned their gazes. But as soon as the pair walked past, they’d go back to staring.
The wolf nudged his cub with its nose, encouraging the boy to walk up the steps.
‘GO.’ It told him. ‘SAFE.’
The boy looked up at the house again. And he began to climb.
The wolf waited for him, patient, faithful.
When he came down again, the wolf noticed the change.
-
The chain finally arrived at the village entrance.
Most of them gave half-hearted cheers, worn out from the long trek.
But not Twilight. He stood, tense, eyes darting around and ears pricked. The boy was here.
The chain began to walk into the village, but they were moving ever so slowly.
Twilight growled and pushed forwards, ignoring whatever they were saying to him.
“Pup.” Time grabbed his arm, and Twilight turned around and snarled. He noticed some of the others actually recoil from him.
“What’s wrong?” Time asked. His gaze never left Twilight’s. The stared at each other for a moment longer before the younger one pulled himself free and stalked towards the village.
“What’s up with him?” He heard, and ignored.
The others were quick to follow, sharing concerned looks.
-
The wolf whined softly, and gazed up at his cub.
His cub knelt next to him, malice floating through the air and obscuring his face.
“What’s wrong?” The wolf could make out the words his cub was saying, but it sounded like he was speaking through water.
“You can’t come?” The boy sounded heartbroken. The wolf knew it had done all it could.
‘STRONG.’ The wolf barked.
His cub wiped his face and stood. “I’ll be okay.” He whispered, before turning to face his purpose.
The wolf watched the boy's retreating figure, and when it could no longer see the boy, it howled a mournful song, filled with loss and longing.
The song echoed over Hyrule that night. In a hundred years, the people will still be telling the story of the hero and the wolf. Everyone alive that day heard the song of the wolf, and then the calamity was sealed away by its boy. The ending is a mystery, but most believe they still run through the forests, riding on the backs of dragons.
-
Twilight faced the boy. He couldn’t breathe as the memories came flooding back, every triumph and failure, every stolen moment.
“Twilight?” His cub said.
“I’m here.” He replied. “And I’m not leaving this time.”
Hmm.... How about some Hero of Twilight headcannons too?
-🦆
I think everyone knows I have this one, but Link has a country accent. During his adventure he noticed people’s reactions to it, ranging from confusion and not understanding him to downright thinking he’s an idiot, so he started trying to downplay his accent and masks it pretty well after a while. It comes out full force when he’s emotional, whether that’s angry or sad or excited.
He enjoys being around others, but he’s happiest when he’s with animals. He could go a whole day without interacting with people and be ok, but a whole day without animals and he’s sad.
He feels very deeply and just doesn’t know how to express it, so it sometimes it makes him the sweetest ray of sunshine and other days it makes him a sad, brooding storm cloud. And he does not want to talk about it while he’s actively feeling that way because he doesn’t know how to articulate it anyway.
He’s a little lost with what to do with his life. He was more than happy to live his life out simply in Ordon Village, but after his adventure he’s restless and confused and eager to help Hyrule more now that his world has been broadened, but feels strangely empty after Midna’s departure. He’s just… lost.
He was raised by Rusl and Uli since he was little. The whole village acknowledges he’s their kid. He moved out into his own home for space and because he was close to coming of age - unlike Ilia, whose dad is the mayor and has a big house, Rusl and Uli’s place is right and once Colin started getting older Link thought it was best to give the family more room to grow. He picked living on the edge of town because that was the easiest place to build and he loves Ordon Spring (he could sense the light spirit without really knowing it). Sometimes he misses being home with them and other times he loves the privacy and isolation.
He had a very close connection to Midna, which snapped into a confused whirlwind of attraction when he saw her true form, but he didn’t have enough time with her after that to truly process it, leaving him a confused hot mess with unresolved feelings.
His relationship with Zelda is more akin to how he looks out for his fellow villagers; she was someone he had to save and protect, and he has a soft spot for her and wants to help her, but there’s a distance between them as her status of royalty makes itself known again. Once the castle isn’t in disarray all the duties and protocols are back, and Link comes to her aid if she needs him, but beyond that he doesn’t spend much time with her. (He does want to have an archery exercise with her though, he thinks she’s a great shot)
He could go days without talking or could talk for hours without shutting up. Most of the time he just pipes up when asked, though; it’s rare for him to start a conversation unprompted. The exception to this is when he sees someone who needs help, whether it’s physically or emotionally. He’s a good listener and will absolutely sit with you and prompt you to talk about what’s bothering you. Just don’t expect him to be as open if you turn the tables on him.
Transforming into a wolf is still painful, but he’s gotten used to it. The weather or injuries can make it worse, though, and some days it’ll just hit him and he’ll stay in wolf form and hide so he doesn’t have to transform back and feel that bone shifting pain again.
He is usually the responsible figure that others look up to, and he fills the role naturally, but sometimes (a fair amount of times but don’t tell him that) he’ll just… do the stupidest thing without thinking, and he doesn’t realize it’s stupid until someone else has a heart attack about it. Like how he’s so used to being in burning structures by the end of his adventure that when there’s a small fire near Ordon he just… runs into it to save the goats while the others have a meltdown.
I wrote the scene that started Monarch's Will
I didn't mean for it to get so long but it got away from me a bit. I ain't a writer so plz be nice thx :)
Twilight hated this, the ballroom was packed with nobles, ladies brushing against his arms with their noxious perfumes that made his nose burn, and gentlemen talking loudly in his ears making them ring, Twilight wanted nothing more than to escape this gilded prison. A man bumped into Twilight making him want to bare his fangs and snarl but he caught himself, The others were around he couldn't afford to be a wolf now, none of the heroes look at him the same after Wolffie, Time doesn't look at Twilight the same, they expected a Hylian and got him instead. So he quieted the rumble in his throat and closed his mouth over his fangs, grabbing a glass of champagne Twilight found himself a quiet corner to watch the rest of the party from. Twilight stayed in his corner mostly unbothered and ignored, Time glanced over at him occasionally, a hint of worry in his eye but never approached. After a while, Twilight was about to ditch the party altogether and find himself a forest to unwind in, but his saving grace finally came in the form of his queen on the other side of the room, joining the party 'fashionably late' as she liked to call it. Twilight was by her side before he realized he was walking, Midna noticed him walk over and put her arm over his shoulders pulling him closer to her as she was talking to some noble "Perfect time, this is Link, MY Divine Beast he aided me in taking back my kingdom from Zant and save Hyrule from destruction" The inflection on my didn't go unnoticed by Twilight, but he didn't mind, it was a nice contrast from Hyrule's reluctant acceptance, Dusk being the only noble who would even agknowage him without a grimace. "oh, ah- well it's JUST LOVELY to see you again Hero of Twilight, I thought you had left the kingdom on some quest? Or had moved to that Realm of Dusk or something?" The barely repressed grimace on the nobleman's face was amusing to Twilight, "Twilight Realm. Yeah, Hylia sent me on'a grand 'o quest ov'r yonder, but it ain't 'dat big of'a deal I reckon" Twilight purposely thickened his accent to really bend the noble out of shape. Twi heard Midna hold back a snort as the man's face looked disgusted, quickly excusing himself from the conversation and storming off. "Hyrulians really don't like you beasty" Midna commented readjusting their positions to use both of Twi's shoulders as armrests. "I know, but it ain'ts mess'in me up if 'couple Hyrulians ain't liken me." They chatted among themselves for a while until Merida, a Lady of Midna's court, came striding up "My Lady I have just been notified that your rematch with the Challenger was meant for today, what do you wish to do?" Midna straightened up to address her "Bring him to the plaza outside, the Queen has been wanting to see more of our culture and ways, what better way than to witness a Challenge" Merida looked exasperated "As you wish my Lady." she then portaled away leaving the two alone in the crowded room again. Midna moved to look Twilight in the eyes, softening her gaze when it met his. She leaned closer to him and said in a lowered voice "Are you alright with doing it hear love? With all these people and dumb heroes around I could move it to a later date." Twilight could hear the concern in her voice, he put his hands on her arms and met her gaze with a confident one. "We don't know how long I'll be here for or how long I'll be gone, there ain't no way to plan around dat. It don't matter how I'm feelin the Challenge is important and needs to happen." She nodded and they started making their way out to the plaza.
*walks on in shockingly calmly for once, hands you a mug of hot chocolate and a basket of cookies without elaborating* Just passing by to say hello, I wish you a good day and thank you for all your work in the fandom, happy late two years! Plus dropping some stuff about thief reader, as well as Cattle Raider Reader with Twilight that won't leave me alone in between writing for the Fairy Tale au and trying to swat an Assassin Reader with Warriors away from this ask, life's been difficult and I've recently became a dog parent for the second time and me and my older dog can definitely sympathize with Time and Twilight as a result, the pup has as much energy as Wild on caffeine and energy potions.
Thief Reader's first reaction to Warriors is definitely "Aww Captain! I thought we had something special!" While still shamelessly running a check on Time to make sure they didn't hurt him too bad during the initial scuffle, ruffle Wind's hair because while they missed their second partner in crime but have no idea wether he'd be receptive to hugs, then promptly introduce themselves as "The one person who couldn't compete against Link's one true love."
Time, baffled and who low-key had a crush on their older self and their current self before they were separated during the War of Ages: "I'm sorry?"
Thief Reader, fondly rolling their eyes and whipping out a mask that looks suspiciously like a golden wolf with red eyes and placing it over Time's face, and probably giving Twilight a heart attack in the process: "Yourself, obviously. I knew I couldn't compete with the legend and your desire to help people, if Malon and her highness couldn't talk you down from it then what chance did I, a lowly thief have? I'm selfish, I couldn't keep you from doing what you loved if I tried, but I couldn't see you get hurt either." *Shrugs, looking away* "... Besides, I did basically force myself into your journey, I helped, but I also burdened my first friend, between you and me that day on the portal, of course I'd chose you to survive and go back home in a heartbeat. It's the least I could do for you." *In a heartbeat, moves on while winking towards the Chain* "Well! That's enough of that, so they're all yours in a sense, mhm? Thank goodness none of you got his unfortunate nose." *Starts passing around all of the stolen items back, pauses at Twilight with a hum, head tilted as they put his neckacle back over his neck and hands Wild his Slate* "Oh, aren't you lot just precious, can I keep them Link?"
Time, taking the mask off with an unimpressed look on his face: "I can't believe you actually kept it, and no. They're not pups, Reader."
Thief Reader, crossing their arms: "I know and you know that's not what I meant! Learn how to share, besides they're much more well behaved than that nasty shadow I swindled recently."
Thief Reader had a tendency to steal a lot of items from Mask and vice versa since he learned how to be light footed from them, Thief's Reader's absolute favorites were his cap, earring and the masks, they wouldn't touch most transformation masks because some lines you just don't cross, they only steal the FD mask out of them in order to keep a young Mask from overusing the transformation with Wind's and Warrior's help once they explained what was up with it, and they repeat that behavior now with the Chain, as a result they know the Fierce Deity well because even if they wouldn't use the mask they probably kept it close enough to their face to talk to him into protecting and keeping an eye on Link in case they couldn't. They don't care he's a deity they can and Will throw it into the ocean if they don't care of him. Their favorite being a golden wolf mask they got from appeasing a Wolfos, they couldn't give it back to Mask before they were separated, but they kept it well maintained all these years to give it back to Time with the excuse of 'It suits him better than it ever did them' as they used it as a replacement to cover their face once they got older. They used a scarf to cover their face during their tenure as a thief when young and Mask ended up with it, so he gives it back now that he can finally return it (though they still sometimes end up swapping them back and forth on accident still, force of habit), also Thief Reader is the only one who can listen to him when he gets sneaky and is the only person in the Chain who doesn't jump, just makes sure to spook him back or they get together to covertly mess with the youngsters (Warriors is onto them but HATES that he can't gather proof, it's the War of Ages all over again).
As for Cattle Raider Reader aka the cousin of the Wild West inspired rivalry enemies to lovers au that I'm still not elaborating on, in medieval times there was this whole thing where different tribes or villages raided each other's cattle, either as war practice or as genuine stealing when times were rough, the idea here is that Reader is from a neighboring village from Ordon that engaged in the practice in a competive way and since Twilight was one of the best with a horse around, logically they clashed a lot to match Reader (Reader being the leader of the offensive village with Twilight trying to get Ordon's cattle back or defending it), as a result they had a very fierce rivalry/enemies thing going on before the twilight came. Reader came around to scout things out in Ordon for the next raid only to find out Twilight, the village children and Ilia are missing due to monsters, decide that something having happened to their rival was absolutely unnaceptable and set out to look for him, incidentally they run into an injured Wolfie at the beginning of the game (since ya know, Rusl actually burns Twi if you're not careful) and while at first they consider walking away because it's a wolf, the eyes reminded them of Twi and so they cave and help fix him up enough to go back to the quest and Midna before heading out, leading Twi to go "... Huh. Maybe they aren't that awful after all." And after a couple more accidental run ins during Twi's adventure and a more or less proper reunion in Castle Town after Lanayru, where they connect the dots that "Oh wait a second this wolf doesn't only have Link's eyes it IS Link" after seeing him try to sneak into the castle again with Midna, they help him out on the condition that they aid him in this questing business because like heck they're having their rival not come back home by being reckless and Hyrule is their home too, they're gonna help defend it. Things just spiral from there.
Their first introduction to the Chain is probably when the Chain is overwhelmed in Twilight's Hyrule, Twi recognizes he's near Reader's village and also realizes he didn't tell them where they went and while they're probably undoubtedly mad at him that it's technically the best shot for them all to make it in one piece. So he leads them there and Reader, who had spotted the battle in the distance and recognize Twi's horse, saddles up, grabs a sword or an axe, throws it onto the head of the nearest Lizalfo near Twi with unnerving accuracy, then turns to Twilight with the "You BETTER have a good explanation for this or else you're next" glare, Twi, who is too used to this at this point is just "Missed you too Reader.", While the Chain is just confused in the back on how Twi knows this person and why he's so chill even when they look like they would skin him as Wolfie to make a fur coat if not for the situation at hand (meanwhile other Chain members are probably having an epiphany of where Wild gets his fighting style from, because Cattle Raider Reader is ruthless, a menace and will grab anything on the battle field to throw at the enemies if their weapons aren't nearby).
Or something, I don't know I kind of have a headache so it's probably not flowing clearly, really need to write this all out in full one day...
Anyway, that's that for now! Once again thank you for all your work in the fandom, I'll definitely be coming on by to gush more about your writing omce I can so uh, fair warning, I can get rambly XD.
Hope you're having a nice day!
-Just an Anon on A Stroll/WintertimeStoryteller 🐚
Ok first of all- I have so much to unpack here XD
Thief Reader is giving me some heavy vibes of a fic I read once but with the roles reversed. I don't remember the name of the fic. To Steal a Thief's Heart? (doubt it.) But in that fic Link was the thief and rogue and it was awesome. If you're interested I can track it down and send a link. :D
I love that Reader shows up on the scene and is instantly back to their shenanigans all over again. Time doesn't even seem all that phased for the most part- maybe them shoving the mask onto his face was a blessing in disguise. He could hide his shock and gaping mouth, lol.
Time crushing on them twice was cute though. Love that. <3
TELL ME ABOUT THE WILD WEST STORY!!!!! WINTERTIME!!!!!!!!!!
This is insane!!!! Don't dangle that in front of me DX
The torture. Not fair.
BUT FOR THE ENENMIES TO LOVERS
Y e s. H E L L O. I'm listening. Intently. Gib. Gib more plz.
My god, I could see that reunion in my head so clearly. The axe nearly taking Twi's head off, him ducking without a second thought. The charging rage of Reader where they retrieve their axe and point it at Twi. And he's got a stupid (if sheepish) smile on his face.
Also it's ok. I love your rambles. Literally feel free to come by any day <3
Part 17
The Chain pull Maari and Warriors out of the Yiga hideout, but are less than pleased by their actions.
Legend and Hyrule performed the counter spell they had used countless times to close the dark portal. Once again the runes the Yiga Master had drawn were scorched into the ground. When the two spellcasters were finished they both rounded on Maari. Hyrule to see to her fresh wounds, Legend with his sharp tongue.
"What the f**k were you two idiots thinking?! Coming here by yourselves with no backup!"
"Language Vet," Twilight uttered, shifting out of wolf form nearby.
"What? Don't tell me you disagree?!" Legend retorted.
"Not at all. This was a dumb move by all our standards," Twi grunted, fixing Wars with a hard stare.
"If Hyrule hadn't noticed you two leaving you'd both be dead!" Four added, though he sounded a little more compassionate than the other two.
Meanwhile Wild returned to the Yiga hideout amid their discussion. He was a little taken aback to find the Vet and Twilight shouting at Wars, while Hyrule and Sky were trying to keep Maari still so they could examine her wounds.
"Are you sure you don't want a potion? I'm sure one of us has a fairy," Sky asked Maari over and over.
"I'm sure." She insisted, again. "Let's just get out of here first, and if Hyrule wants he can take another look in the morning." Maari tried to shrug them off.
"You shouldn't be so flippant," Time interjected. "If that wound gets infected it'll be a lot harder to heal."
"I told you its fine," Maari hissed. Still, she clutched at her right arm with her left hand.
"You shouldn't have pushed me out of the way like that," Sky stated, hands on his hips, unable to look Maari in the eyes.
"What was I supposed to do?" Maari rounded on the Skyloftian. "Just let it grab you? Maybe pull you through that portal? That was never going to happen Sky."
"I could have handled it," Sky retorted, his usually calm eyes darkening a little.
"... not to mention none of us knows what happens in our own time if one of us dies on this journey!" Twilight practically yelled in Wars face.
Still Wars remained silent. Taking the abuse from his brothers without dishing out any in return.
"Dumb soldier," Legend grunted under his breath.
That almost got a rise out of Wars, but he pushed it down along with everything else. They were right. Maybe not about everything. But he had been an idiot. He'd been selfish and reckless and for the first time in his life he hadn't thought his plan through. Wars glanced sideways at Maari, stuck between Hyrule and Sky. Sky appeared to be berating her in the same manner as Twi and Lege.
Maari. Had his feelings for her really blinded him so badly, that he had walked willingly into an enemy stronghold without a plan. No, they had a plan, but the plan had changed. Wars shifted his gaze to Melyn, still kneeling on the floor with Wind and now Wild each with a hand on her shoulders. Maari's mother, alive and well. Wars remembered that first morning by the shrine where Maari had told him about her mother. How she had gone missing when Maari was just a child. So much had changed since then.
Wars closed his eyes and tried to stay calm. He was so used to being in control. In control of making plans, in control of his troops, of the Chain (to a degree). When the prospect of his own death had hung inches away from him, there had been no control. Yet, he hadn't panicked. He had laid his soul bare to Maari and that had been enough. It wasn't that the fight had gone out of him. As soon as a glimmer of hope had appeared, his instincts kicked in again. He couldn't really explain it but, dying with Maari by his side had felt... not right but, acceptable. That didn't make sense to him either, so he shook the thoughts from his mind and tuned back into the world around him.
"Alright that's enough. Let's get out of this place before the Yiga decide to come back. Maari you'll let Hyrule heal you when we're back in the bunker, understood?" Time announced, drawing everyone's attention.
Maari nodded begrudgingly and Hyrule stopped fussing quite so much.
"Four and Legend, keep an eye on our prisoner." Time continued. "Wild, I want you to take Maari and the Captain back first."
Wild stepped forward and teleported Wars and Maari back to Gerudo Town without a word. Bringing a couple of them at a time, Wild returned the other heroes to the underground chamber beneath the palace. Wind and Twilight had found Wars and Maari's gear stored near the Yiga prison and returned it to them. Hardly anyone spoke to them, which they both agreed felt worse than being yelled at.
Riju and Zelda were waiting for them when they got back. Two guards were summoned to the bunker door to escort Melyn to the palace cells. She left without a fuss and promised not to be any trouble.
Hyrule worried everyone further when he announced that Maari's wound was strange. He had healed the cut on her arm without difficulty, but the claw marks left by the gloom hand seemed to be fighting his magic. Time was troubled and Wild attempted to help by providing Hyrule with dark clumps to add to his healing potions. They seemed to take the edge off Maari's pain and the darkness around the edges of her wounds receeded.
When Hyrule was satisfied that some progress had been made, he bandaged her arm and left Maari to get some rest. Soon after Wars came to check on her in the room she was using in the bunker, closely followed by Time. The old hero sighed, crossed his arms and stared at the floor.
"Go ahead Link, I know we deserve it," Wars uttered, unable to look up at Time.
It felt a little strange being on the receiving end of a big brother talk. Especially from his Sprite.
"Please," Maari spoke before Time could open his mouth. "It was my idea to go up there. I convinced the Captain to come with me. I wanted to know what happened to my mother and I put us both in terrible danger. I'm so sorry I endangered the rest of you Time. I wasn't thinking clearly at all. I made a terrible judgement and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't trust me to make a single decision again. But please know how sorry I am and how greatful I am that you came to save us."
Wars looked surprised by Maari's admission. After all, he had encouraged her to go.
"Is that all true Cap?" Time asked, fixing his eye on Wars.
"Mostly. Except it wasn't just Maari's idea. I urged her to go to the Yiga base. I wanted to get something done and I didn't think about the consequences of us getting caught. You have my apology too, and I'll apologise to the others tomorrow. They deserve that much from me at the very least."
"I'm glad both of you realise how dumb you were and exactly what your decisions almost cost you." Time sighed. "But I don't want to lecture you today. You're both adults and you're free to make your own decisions, but you have to realise those decisions have consequences. Maari you once talked to me about respect, I may not be your superior but I hope you will respect my orders when I say you are not to leave this city again."
Maari nodded. "I do respect you Time. And yes, I will obey your order."
"Same goes for you Wars. You set one foot outside this city again and you'll be answering to the whole chain, not just me."
"You don't have to tell me twice."
"Glad to hear it. Now Maari I suggest you go back to your own quarters. Wars I'm going to tell Twi to keep an eye on you." Time concluded as he stepped back out of the room and walked away.
Maari and Link looked at each other through sideways glances.
"I'm..." Maari began but Link stopped her.
"Don't apologise to me. We both made a big mistake tonight. The Old Man is right, we should have known better. You were distracted by finding your mother, I was distracted by..." He paused, looking at Maari directly. "Anyway, you should probably do as he says and get going. You deserve some rest after the night you've had."
Warriors got to his feet and slowly walked toward the door. For a moment Maari stayed where she was, watching him go.
"Link, I know tonight was probably the worst mistake I'll ever make in my life. But, thank you. I should never have let you go with me, but thank you for sticking by me."
"Hey, I'd stick by you no matter what. Goodnight Mar."
Without another word Wars left the room. Maari wrapped her arms around herself and squeezed her eyes shut. She was fighting back tears as the gravity of the nights events threatened to send her into a spiral. She had managed to hold herself together while the others were talking and tending to her. But now she was alone she had no one to perform for. The dam broke and tears flooded down her face. She buried her mouth in her knees to prevent anyone from hearing her violent sobs. Her back shook and for a while Maari struggled to draw in deep breaths.
Eventually she cried herself into exhaustion. Wiping her face and collecting her things, Maari left the room and the chamber and climbed back up to her guest room in the palace. There she fell into an uneasy sleep filled with nightmares about portals and gloom. Most disturbing of all were the images of the heroes laying dead around her, while the mad Yiga Master cackled over their bodies. She slept fitfully and without rest until the late hours of the morning.
***
"I think we have a lot to talk about," Time said, as he began the meeting.
Everyone had gathered in the dining hall of the bunker, including Zelda, Riju and Maari.
"But first I think there's two people here who have something to say." He continued, nodding at Wars and Maari.
The two of them looked at each other and heaved a heavy sigh. They both got to their feet and addressed the rest of the group.
"We want to apologise to all of you for putting you in danger," said Wars.
"What we did was reckless and irresponsible. I acted without thinking about anyone but myself. I put Wars in danger and dragged you all into rescuing us. I wouldn't have blamed any of you for leaving us there. And although I'm greatful that you didn't, I'm so sorry to have put you all in harms way." Maari added. She bowed to the group and stood waiting.
"I'm sorry to all of you too, I wasn't thinking clearly and from now on I wouldn't blame you if you didn't trust me to make decisions." Wars stared down at the table, unable to look any of his brothers in the eye.
There was a long uncomfortable moment of silence. Zelda and Riju looked at each other, waiting for the boys to speak.
"Well," Wind began and the others were a little surprised that he was the first to speak. "None of us got killed. We found out where the dark portals are coming from, and it sounds like you both learned your lesson."
"Agreed, what they did was stupid but I doubt they'll do anything like it again," Twilight added, giving his friend a comforting smile.
"Stupid, dangerous, outright foolish," Four listed off, counting on his fingers. "But how many of us can say we haven't done anything similar?"
There were nods and grunts of agreement.
"Hey, I infiltrated the Yiga by myself," Wild admitted. "But I always had a quick way out if I needed it. Rushing in without a plan was pretty reckless."
"Alright, I think they've had enough. Let's drop it now," Time urged.
Maari and Wars took their seats and the the real meeting began
"Well, thanks to Maari we actually have a better idea of where your dark portals are coming from." Zelda said cheerfully, attempting to lift the mood of the room. "I found this book in the library," she held up the tome Maari had seen before. "Which has references to an ancient grimoire which was lost centuries ago. It talks of the powers held within the runes of the text and what they could do."
"Does it say where it came from?" Legend asked.
"I'm afraid not, the author of this book just says it was discovered bricked up in a hidden passage of the castle. But some time after that it was stollen and it disappeared from the records. But there are runes in here that match the ones you've seen before and the ones left behind by the portal the Yiga summoned last night." Zelda concluded.
"So it's been the Yiga this whole time," Wild uttered, his fingers laced together in front of him. "But why do the portals keep appearing in different eras? I thought the Yiga clan were unique to our time period."
"They are," Zelda replied. "This volume describes the many uses of this ancient grimoire. How the runes could be used to travel though time."
"So to stop the portals, we need to get this grimoire back," said Sky.
"Then what? Do we destroy it?" Four asked.
"I'm not sure. I'd need to read the grimoire to know how best to deal with it," Zelda replied.
"If someone thought it was dangerous enough to brick it up in a wall, I'm guessing it's going to be too powerful to just burn it." Riju added.
"Well first things first, we need to find the thing again. Now the Yiga know we're onto them they'll be difficult to find," Zelda mused.
"I think I know someone who might have some answers," Maari said quietly, drawing everyone's attention.
"You don't have to talk to her if you don't want to." Wars said softly, wanting to reach out and touch Maari to offer her some comfort.
"No it's fine. I'd like to know why my mother tried to kill me."
***
Maari and Zelda stood to one side of Riju's throne, as the three of them waited for Malyn to be brought up from the jail. Maari couldn't describe how she was feeling. She was glad of the breeze coming through the windows as she was sweating more than usual. Her feet shifted from side to side and she didn't know what to do with her hands. What did she usually do with her hands?
"Are you alright?" Zelda whispered beside her.
"I'm not sure. It's been six years since I've seen my mother. I've grown up so much since then. And she... I don't even know who she is."
Maari was about to find out who Melyn was as two guards entered the throne room, each with a hand holding one of Melyn's arms. She was brought forward and pushed to her knees before Riju.
"What is your name prisoner?" Riju asked, summoning her queenly voice.
"Melyn, your highness," she replied, looking up then bowing her head in reverence.
"Do you know why you have been brought before us?" Riju continued.
"I believe so your grace. I was told you wish to question me." Melyn kept her head bowed as she spoke.
"Yes, we have some questions for you Melyn. You will answer any and all questions put to you, understood?"
Melyn nodded and Zelda took a step forward.
"You were a commander of the Yiga. How much did you know about how the Master opened up the dark portals?"
"I only knew what was necessary for me to perform my duties. I knew that the ritual to open the portals and summon dark beings required blood magic. It was part of my job to bring sacrifices for the ritual." Melyn explained. She hung her head low, her shoulders drooping. "It was the part of my undercover mission I disliked the most."
"Undercover, who gave you this mission?" Zelda asked.
"I gave it to myself Ma'am. During the calamity the Yiga prospered. Someone had to act to prevent them from using the grimoire. If I hadn't convinced them I had defected from the Sheikah, they would have figured out the runes and the ritual much sooner."
"But why didn't you tell anyone?" Maari asked, speaking up for the first time.
"I..." Melyn began, but Maari wasn't finished.
"Why didn't you tell Impa, or Purah what you were planning." As she spoke Maari's voice grew louder and started to crack. "Why didn't you tell your husband? Why didn't you say goodbye to your children?!"
There was a long pause as mother and daughter stared into each other's eyes. Maari's full of fire, Melyn's resigned and regretful.
"I have always regretted not being able to say goodbye to you Maari," Melyn said slowly, maintaining gentle eye contact with her daughter. "I wished I could have gone back to Kakariko and explained everything. But I was carefully watched for so long after I joined the Yiga, I couldn't sneak away for even a day. So I resigned myself to the realisation that my family would never know what happened to me. I hoped that I would fulfil my goal as soon as possible. Destroy the grimoire, defeat the Yiga Master and get back home to you. But when Master Kogah survived and thrived in the depths, I knew I had to carry on my mission."
"So you've been living as a Yiga for six years?" Zelda reitteratiied.
"Indeed. However now my cover has been blown I won't be able to complete the task I set myself." Melyn sighed, then turned back to her daughter. "I will never be able to tell you how sorry I am for abandoning you and our family Maari. I hope one day you can forgive me."
"You were going to sacrifice me to the Yiga Master," Maari replied bluntly.
"No!" Melyn exclaimed, almost rising to her feet. "No Maari, I would never have allowed it. I would have fought to my last breath to get you out of that hell hole. When I saw you in that store room my heart sank to the ground. I couldn't believe you had appeared in the hideout. I had to play my part to keep up appearances. But I was working on a plan to get you out. However, if your friends hadn't arrived in time, I don't know how I was going to keep you alive. Please believe me, I would have done anything. I would do anything to keep you safe."
Maari considered her mother's words for a long time. She looked back down at her kneeling form. Melyn was still wearing her Yiga uniform, but her face still held much of the expression Maari remembered from childhood. She sighed and stepped forward until she was standing in front of Melyn. She dropped to one knee and even laid a hand on Melyn's shoulder.
"I've had my own apologies to make today. I made a terrible judgement and I put my friends in danger. I'm more greatful than I can believe that you're alive. I understand why you did what you did, but it will take me some time to forgive you. I know Karu and father will be overjoyed to know you are safe." Maari wiped her palm across her cheek as tears begun to spill.
Melyn nodded to Maari.
"My beautiful daughter, you've grown into an incredibly strong woman."
Maari got back up to her feet and turned to Riju.
"Might I be excused your Highness?"
"Of course," Riju nodded.
Maari turned and left the throne room. She walked up the stairs and kept walking until she reached a low wall with an aquaduct flowing past. Maari slipped off her shoes and sat on the wall with her feet dangling in the cool water. The sun had just dropped past its highest point and the air was dry and hot. But Maari's mind and heart were racing. The combination of the cool running water and the airless afternoon helped clear her head, as silent tears slipped down her face.
While she thought about her mother, another face swam into her thoughts. Link had been so selfless throughout their ordeal. He could have run during their battle. He could have saved himself and gone to get help. But he had stayed. He had stayed with Maari. Without knowing what the Yiga had in store for them. Without knowing if they would live to see another sunrise. He had stayed with her. Maari didn't know if that meant Link was stupid or madly in love with her. She chuckled to herself. Of course, both was a possibility.
Febuwhump Day 26: Alt. 1: Rope Burns (Hyrule)
AO3 link. Warnings: blood, injury, loss of consciousness, graphic descriptions of violence
Continuation of Knife Wound (Sky) and Presumed Dead (Hyrule). The final part of this storyline will come tomorrow, so stay tuned!
@wildsage00 WOO here we are. This is completely unedited, like not even a solid read through. I'll come back and edit tomorrow probably, but for now I hope it's good!
Part 3/5. Part 1. Part 2. Part 4. Part 5.
After seemingly endless hours of following Hyrule’s trail, they finally reached a building. It was half underground and covered in vines. It was not easy to spot.
It was even harder to figure out how to get inside. Sky felt like they were wasting precious minutes and was ready to go along with Wild’ plan of ‘bomb it until we get inside,’ but Warriors insisted they keep the element of surprise. Somewhere deep inside his mind Sky knew that was the right call, but every second that passed by made his anxiety spike even further.
Four was the one to find the way inside. He didn’t admit how he did it, but he opened a hidden door from the inside. Without a word, they all rushed in. They were silent save for the clanking of their armor and swords, but even that was dampened by strategically placed cloths.
Twilight remained in his wolf form to follow Hyrule’s scent. Sky could feel the distress rolling off him in waves. Twilight’s nose was scrunched like there was an overwhelming smell. Sky refused to entertain the implications of that thought.
A scream ripped through the air. Sky flinched violently, barely resisting the urge to clamp his hands over his ears. Once the initial shock went down, Sky realized exactly what he had heard. That was Hyrule’s scream.
That was Hyrule screaming in pain.
Sky broke into a sprint. He vaguely heard Warriors hiss his name, but Sky didn’t stop. His chest heaved as he sprinted down the hall until he reached a wooden door. He could hear monsters’ yells and cheers loudly through the door.
Sky had enough presence of mind left to wait for backup. Wild, Legend, and Twilight were just barely behind him, and as soon as they caught up Sky burst through the door.
There were dozens of monsters crowded into the room. Sky didn’t recognize any of them, but he could tell they were the strongest of their type. There were countless weapons leaning against the walls, but only the ones in the center of the room were holding any.
A large stone slab was elevated in the center of the room. Sky could barely see through the thick crowd of monsters, but he could make out Hyrule’s upper body tied to the table. There were ropes around both arms pulling them taut towards the corners of the slab. Another rope was tied tightly around his neck, digging deep into his skin. Hyrule’s eyes were closed, his skin was pale, and his head was lolled to the side.
Underneath the table, a large basin caught the blood dripping from Hyrule’s wounds.
Sky saw red.
The spell of silence was broken by six arrows flying in quick succession. The three monsters closest to Hyrule were his with two arrows each, one in the eye and one in the throat. Blood spurted wildly, coating in red the little unblemished skin Hyrule had left.
Sky yelled and leapt into the crowd. The world slowed around him, and all that there was became him and his sword. He swung with deadly accuracy. He never missed, and nothing ever got close enough to hit him.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, Sky registered his side flaring in pain, and his lungs heaving to keep up. He pushed the pain down and ignored any other sensations. Hyrule needed him, and he wouldn’t let his brother down again.
The battle passed in a blur of blood and guts and metal striking bone. Sky tore through the crowd of monsters until he was by Hyrule’s side. Sky forced himself to look away long enough to survey his surroundings. The others had joined and were quickly taking down the horde, thinning it from the inside out. Wild was on a perch on the wall taking down any stray monsters that got too close to Hyrule.
Sky released a breath and turned to Hyrule, just as he heard Legend reach his side. Sky grabbed Hyrule’s wrist to check the pulse as he cast a glance over Hyrule’s body to assess the damage. For the first time since they arrived, Sky’s hands faltered.
Hyrule was a mess. He had multiple stab wounds in his thighs and shoulders, and long, deep cuts across his abdomen. His shirt had been completely ripped off and his pants were in shreds. Although Sky could feel a pulse, Hyrule’s skin was pale and cold. He breathed in shuttering gasps, and his pulse was far too erratic to be sustained for long.
Before Sky could work through the fog in his thoughts, Legend’s voice cut in. “Get the ropes,” he ordered.
His sharp tone cut into Sky’s mind and spurred him back into action. Hesitation wouldn’t help, and Sky would not allow himself to be too slow to save someone. Not again.
Sky didn’t bother pulling out a smaller knife; he sliced through the ropes with the Master Sword. He cut the ropes around Hyrule’s arms and neck, then sheathed the sword and carefully untangled them. The ropes left deep gashes in Hyrule’s skin. Sky felt himself muttering near-silent apologies as he pulled the ropes away and the wounds oozed fresh blood.
It was blood Hyrule didn’t have left to lose. As soon as the thought crossed his mind, Legend was by his side again. He had two red potions in hand. He thrust one at Sky, which Sky had to fumble to grasp in time, and quickly uncorked the other bottle.
Legend lifted Hyrule’s head with gentle hands and let the potion trickle into his throat. Sky massaged Hyrule’s throat until he swallowed. They kept at it until Hyrule had gotten down two full health potions. The wounds on his abdomen and thighs began to stitch themselves back together. It would be enough to get them to safety, but Hyrule would need proper medical care to recover from this.
Sky tore his focus from Hyrule and glanced around the room. The battle was still raging. More monsters were flooding into the room from side corridors. The other heroes were keeping them at bay, but the battle was not going to be over anytime soon.
Sky turned back to Hyrule and carefully, carefully lifted the smaller hero into his arms. Hyrule flinched and whimpered, the first movement they’d seen since his earlier scream. Sky felt the noise slice through his heart.
“We have to go,” Sky said. Legend nodded, determination glinting in his eyes.
“I’ll cover you,” Legend said. He quickly glanced around the room and saw Four fighting close by.
“Smithy! We need you with us,” Legend yelled. As soon as Four felled his monster, Legend broke away towards Warriors and Time. “We’re getting ‘Rulie out of here! Meet back at camp!”
“Go!” Warriors yelled, not even turning to reply as he sliced clean through a monster’s throat.
Legend ran back to Sky’s side, fire rod drawn and ready. Four dashed ahead, easily clearing a path. Sky clutched Hyrule closer to his chest, feeling Hyrule’s uneven breaths on his neck. Sky ducked his head down to whisper in Hyrule’s ear.
“We’re here,” Sky said. “We’re getting you out.”
Whumptober day 25 — “You better start talking”
Sharp swerve from yesterday, we’re back to the pain everybody :)
sorry twi
Warnings: injury, little blood, torture sort of? some sort of nonconsensual touching (nothing inappropriate)
Ao3 link
————————————————————
Twilight awoke in a cell.
Which he probably should have been more concerned about, but this specific situation had happened to him enough that after the initial second or two of panic, he merely sighed, and began twiddling with the ropes tying him to the chair he was seated in.
At least he wasn’t a wolf.
He strained his wrists, trying to break the ropes with sheer force, but the ropes were thick, and knotted rather tight. He couldn’t shift his wrists barely at all, and they already felt a bit raw. Whoever had tied him up had done a good job of it.
Maybe he could move the chair? It was a heavy one, uncomfortable thick wood that he had a feeling would be difficult to drag with his hands and ankles tied, but he had to try something.
He’d just started to pull at it when the door handle rattled.
Twilight froze, and settled back down as if he hadn’t just been planning his imminent escape. The door creaked open, and a woman strode in, a large bodyguard-looking man staying in the doorway.
“Oh good, you’re awake. Now we can get started!” she smiled, and the look of it sent nothing but dread up Twilight’s spine. Smiles like that never boded well for anything.
The woman strode up to him, her dark robes swishing, and stared at him, raking her eyes across him in a way that had Twilight bristling. Her gaze paused on his forehead, and she hummed, tapping a finger to her chin.
“I’m going to ask you a couple of questions, and you’re going to answer them, alright?” she said with a smile. “As long as you answer truthfully, no harm will come to you.”
Twilight barely held in a sigh and inwardly braced himself. There was no way he was getting out of this without at least a couple bruises.
The woman strode up even closer to him then, and took his chin in her hand, giving him an intent look. She brushed a thumb over the marks near his eyes, and Twilight couldn’t help his sharp flinch.
“These marks on your face,” she said curiously, tilting his head to the side, “they’re from dark magic.”
“It’s not dark magic,” Twilight growled.
The woman smiled, pulling him closer. “He does speak! Well then, care to let me in on the secret of what kind of magic it is then?”
Twilight went silent once again.
The woman tittered out a laugh and gripped his chin a bit more tightly, forcing him to look her in the eyes.
“Perhaps you don’t realize who I am. I’m a... scientist of sorts. A collector, if you will, of unusual magic,” she said lightly, but there was a dark edge to her voice. “I run experiments on magic used by those such as yourself, and I’m in need of information on this.”
And she held up Twilight’s shadow crystal, dangling it in front of his face.
Twilight’s eyes widened, then narrowed, and he watched in silence as she ran a slow finger along the crystal, the curse seemingly ineffective against her.
Who was this woman?
“Now then. You better start talking,” she smiled, and the expression she made was somehow more terrifying then most of the monsters Twilight had fought for most of his career. But he kept his mouth shut, turning his head away and refusing to meet her eyes.
Her hand suddenly settled on his shoulder, his pelt and outer layers gone, so he could feel her nails press into his skin a bit when she tightened her grip.
“I asked you a question.”
Twilight closed his eyes and kept his mouth firmly shut.
A hand hit him square on the cheek, making him reel as his head was snapped to the side. He blinked open his eyes in surprise, and the woman stood in front of him with her face narrowed and cold.
“Tell me what sort of magic this is. It’s fascinating; dark magic yet not, a curse worn as a necklace as though it were a tool, you’re covered in its essence. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
She grabbed his chin again, staring at his face with eager eyes. “Or you.”
“I’m spoken for,” he said shortly, and the woman raised an eyebrow at the fact that he’d spoken again.
“Is that so? Well then you have quite a bit to lose if you don’t tell me what sort of magic it is you possess,” she said in a low voice, and Twilight closed his mouth again.
The woman’s eye twitched, and she motioned the man in the doorway forward.
“Tell me what you know,” she asked yet again, “or you’ll regret it.”
Twilight almost snorted. You’ll regret it? Oh brother, somebody needed to teach this woman some better threats—
Pain slammed into his stomach and he let out a surprised cough, the bodyguard’s fist having socked him right in the gut. He’d knocked the breath right out of him, and Twilight wheezed, trying to suck in some air.
The woman grabbed his chin again and pulled his face up to hers, staring at him coldly.
Her fingernails were biting into his skin, and he let out a quiet hiss of pain as she tightened her grip, feeling blood bead on his chin. She abruptly raked her fingernails across his jaw, and Twilight flinched.
“Tell me what you know,” she snapped, blood on her nails.
Twilight ignored the stinging on his jaw and the fact that breathing was still a bit tricky, and glared at her, refusing to say a word.
She let out an annoyed growl and motioned her bodyguard forwards again, who slammed the chair Twilight was on backwards onto the floor. He winced as it jarred him, then grunted as the man kicked him in ribs.
Due to the ropes he couldn’t even curl around and protect his head or any other of his more vulnerable parts, only lie there and try not to cry out as more and more hits landed all over him. By the time the man finally stopped, every bit of Twilight was sore and tender, and he winced as the woman kneeled down next to him and grabbed his face yet again.
“Still won’t talk?” she asked mildly, and Twilight bared his teeth at her.
She huffed and pulled something out from under her robes, a long, slender rod of sorts, with swirling crimson designs on the tip.
“This is a magic rod of my own creation,” she hummed, turning it so Twilight could see better. “I haven’t had the opportunity to test it out yet. It’s use is fairly simple: it takes any pain the recipient is suffering from and multiplies it by about... mm, ten I’d say.”
She rested the cold metal under Twilight’s chin, and he froze, unable to keep himself from nervously swallowing.
“One last time. Tell me about your magic.”
Twilight breathed in a steadying breath.
He couldn’t tell her what the shadow crystal was, what sort of magic it was made of. Who knew what she would do with it if she knew exactly how powerful it was? He had to protect Hyrule from this insane witch, and he was willing to do whatever it took to do so.
“Never,” Twilight spat.
And his entire body suddenly lit up with pain.
The stinging scratches on his chin turned into pure agony, clawing gashes of white-hot fire. The countless painful bruises on his person were multiplied, nearly every inch of him radiating pain, and one particularly bad spot where he had wondered if the bodyguard might have cracked a rib turned to an agony so intense Twilight nearly blacked out as he screamed.
It couldn’t have been more than a few seconds before it stopped, but it felt like ages before the metal was removed from his chin and the pain died back down.
Twilight went limp, breathing in short gasps as he tried to get ahold of himself, and shuddered when a hand caressed his cheek.
“Impressive. Most men would be nothing more than a sobbing mess by now,” the woman hummed, then idly traced the marks on his forehead. “We’re done here. If you aren’t willing to talk, perhaps one of your friends are.“
Twilight felt his blood freeze.
He’d thought he was the only one here. How many of the other heroes did she have? Was she doing the same to them? Trying to figure out their various magical abilities and artifacts? He could only hope she didn’t have them all, and pray she hadn’t gotten ahold of their more magical members like Time, or spirits forbid Hyrule—
“Don’t you dare lay a hand on them,” he gasped out, and the woman smiled.
“I won’t. So long as you answer my questions.”
“No,” Twilight spat, and ignoring how much everything hurt, pulled at his bonds again.
He had to protect the kingdom from this insane witch, but he also couldn’t allow her to hurt any of the others. He refused.
“They don’t know anything, you won’t get any information out of them,” he panted, breathing still a bit difficult. “It’s pointless to ask them about it.”
The woman continued to smile, and stood up, dropping his chin.
“Well then,” she said, voice gaining a thrum of excitement. “If you won’t tell me what your magic does, and nobody else knows, I’ll just have to find out for myself. Your friends will be helpful I’m sure.”
“No,” Twilight gasped out again, weakly struggling. Pure protective rage for the others swept through him, and he gained back a tiny measure of strength, thrashing in his bonds. The woman merely watched him, looking almost amused at his weak attempts.
Her smile grew as she left the room, sending a shudder up his spine.
“They’ll make excellent test subjects.”
Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones
Angst! My Beloved!
Not a lot of whump here, but I put Wild through the wringer!!! Lots of BotW2 ideas and concepts here, but nothing really cannon.
Also, disclaimer: I think Flora is a wonderful person, a bit harsh and sometimes unkind, but I feel for her a lot. The prompt submitted to me however asked for her as an ass, so that's what's here, for angst reasons. THIS IS NOT HOW I PLAN ON WRITING HER NORMALLY!!!
When Wild left the Chain behind in the woods, it was with a soft smile and a hesitant wave of his right hand. It was with a gentle ‘See y’all later’ that made Warriors shake his head with a sigh while Twilight offered a wobbly grin.
He would join them again, he knew that. After all, Hylia wouldn’t have chosen him to go with them in the first place if he was only supposed to leave before they’d even really started to know what it was that they were meant to be doing.
He’d see them again, and he’d fall back into a routine with all of them, sparring with Warriors and teaching Hyrule to cook and shield surfing with Wind and learning to carve from Sky. He’d go back to sewing with Legend, to exploring with Hyrule, to learning the Ocarina with Time and teasing Twilight about his terrible singing. He could work with Four on the Sheikah Slate and experimenting with different plants he’d gathered. He would see them again, and he’d go back to being busy and smiling nearly every day.
For the time being however, he had to square his shoulders and harden his jaw as he stepped through the swirl of black that had repulsed all the others every time they tried to enter. He had to tame his mind and wild spirit and come to stand before the Princess of Hyrule in all of her stern glory and receive the scolding he was due for wandering off without permission.
He never had time to question what she meant by being gone for ‘two whole weeks’ before she was marching off towards the labs and explaining that there was a new task for them to complete.
Such a task was one that left in his mind no time for thoughts of his brothers save on the lonely nights in the sky when the islands above the clouds were silent save for the birds about him that reminded him of Sky, or when he ran across the forests and was reminded of the wolf that once ran at his side. And, alright, the tiny people in the grass and the fountains reminded him of Four and Hyrule. When the wind sang strong in his ears as he dove towards the earth from the highest places in the sky, he couldn’t help but envision a small hero whose laughter danced like the sea and who’s fingers mastered the currents of wind and sea both.
It was a lonely quest, just like his last before it, but somehow it was more painfully so, now that he knew what it was to have brothers at his side to catch a monster’s blade when he was too slow or to help him patch himself up afterwards. It was quiet when the Princess and he sat around the fires as night, she studying him as he sat still and stonelike as she worked.
The hand that had waved goodbye to his brothers now flickered green and ethereal in the night shades, iron bands clinging to the wisping appendage and acting as a bond to hold its form together. It was nothing like what he’d known or studied in the Sheikah technology, or even what he’d seen from the many worlds he’d traveled with the other, and it earned many a stare and twist of the lips from those he met and traded with during his journey.
The arm was only the first of many changes, it’s power seeping through his body and altering him before he even knew what was happening. He’d hated it at first, disliking how it changed him, made his eyes glow and his hair touch with the same ethereal shades, red bleeding through at the roots and earning him even more wary looks.
Ganon, in all his terrifying power, had been a surprising comfort during the quest, an aid to discovering his new abilities and training them to bend to his own will. The Princess had been wary of their relationship, but had accepted it when she saw what he learned to do, and every evening she would require a report of his newfound skills, as well as the occasional demonstration or examination.
It all came to an end both too soon and not soon enough.
Ganon was gone, as if he’d never been there at all, and the Princess was as cold as ever even after their second adventure at each other's sides. And now there was no use for the abilities that had fused to his soul like the arm had to his flesh. He’d asked Purah if there was something that could be done to restore his body to its normal Hylian state, without the glowing limb that earned his only stares and insults from the village people, but the Princess had overheard it and declared that such a thing should not even be attempted.
“You don’t understand, Link. Don’t be foolish! We have here a scientific marvel ready for our investigation and exploration and you want to get rid of it just because it looks odd?”
He’s shuffled his feet slowly, resisting the impulse to rub at his chest where the Hylian part of him ended and the eldritch horror began. “I can’t live like  Hylian anymore.”
“Because you aren’t one!” Her Highness rolled her eyes. “Honestly, Sir Knight, after everything I certainly doubt that Hylian even applies to you anymore! Hylians do not possess the qualities that you now do, and they most certainly do not travel through stone or time or any other such thing at will. Think would you! You’re something else entirely, and I intend to find out what that is!”
Purah had frowned at that, eyes full of sorrow as they met his own with an apologetic sigh. But there was nothing the de-aged scientist could really say against the royal Sovreign of Hyrule, not as a Sheikah sworn to the service of the royal family. The woman/girl had offered him a sympathetic pat on the head later after climbing up to reach high enough to do so, as well as a few dumplings that Paya had sent on her grandmother’s behalf the day before. It was a welcome gesture, but amounted to so little on the grand scale of life. Not when so many others he had once called his friends had so blatantly rejected the mere sight of him.
Bolson and the other carpenters shied away from him with harsh whispers as they spat insults across the distance.
‘Half-blood’.
‘Gerudo Bastard’.
‘Freak’.
‘Demon’.
There were favorite insults spread from stable to stable and up and coming village to up and coming town and slowly all of Hyrule knew of the monster that had once been the hero. Gossip abounded, and he couldn’t even turn to shield his face with his hood without drawing attention to his arm.
It was only the koroks that welcomed him, themselves all too accustomed to the strange and ethereal. Them and the blupees.
Maybe it was the knowledge of how it felt to be shot at for his oddness that allowed him to ease into the graces of the flighty animals. And maybe it was his lonely heart crying for comfort, but when nestled in their midst, it almost reminded him of how it felt to be hugged by the salty veteran, on the rare occasional that the pink-haired hero had let down his guard.
The fairy’s tangled themselves in his hair and the blupees gathered at his feet, koroks dancing around him and flying to his side as if he was some sort of forest god, but the strange rise of his spirits in their presence shattered the instant a traveler caught sight of him.
Arrows and fire, once his favorite of weapons, were turned against him as words in every language of the New Hyrule had burst from the mouths of its people, and like his namesake, he ran before them, darting through the forest and fading in amidst the trees, hiding, incorporeal and translucent within the halls of the forest as those he’d once seen as allies pushed him away.
He’d begged the new Queen for aid, for relief or even just a word to the people that he wasn’t the evil they had come to think he was, but she only waved him aside with a purse of her lips. “You are not meant to be here without first asking.” The Child of Hylia declared, eyes as cold as the Shrine’s waters themself. “And why should I make a declaration on behalf of a man who refuses to even speak to me properly? You come groveling like a worm, yet for years it was I who you ignored. See how it feels, Sir Hero, to be the one left helpless at the hands of the country. Know what it is to be scorned by those who you thought would love you.”
He’d barely made it out of the window before the trainee guards of the newly repaired Hyrule Castle had caught him and Queen Zelda Diana Hyrule had stared after him with eyes colder than Hebra’s tallest peaks.
It was the Father Tree -the Deku Tree as the Queen had called it, but the koroks laughed at him for using the name, so he’d adjusted in kind- who suggested that he hide the changes, and he’d begun to wander Hyrule as much as possible to find the materials he would have needed.
The Queen still required his presence regularly so she could inspect him; her love of science no ways tainted as to stop her from ordering him to appear regularly, as there was now no need or safety in his acting as her guard. The Queen sought her people’s respect, and to employ such a being as himself, not Hylian and not quite mortal, would be to spark fear in the people. Indeed, when he skirted villages, he would wince at word of ‘the queen’s monster’ as gossip was traded. Those who didn’t see him themselves knew him as a beast of feral nature who lived amid the lost woods and destroyed any who came close.
“A specter that glows with the light of the shrines.” They would tell each other over campfires. “It has eyes like a ghost, empty and lost, with no care for humanity or Hylia’s chosen. They say it was once the Hero of this world, but he died ages ago.”
“I heard it’s the body, possessed by a being beyond this realm, a monster escaped from the edges of reality that tried to hide in our midst but corrupted it’s host so that it only scares away others, leaving it roam the earth in a shattered body. If you get too close to it though, it’ll take your instead.”
He’d stayed away from towns after that.
The blupees and koroks had been happy to help him to find what he needed to hide among the Hylians should he wish though, and two in particular guided him; the korok swinging little twigs like they were batons and humming swinging little shanties as it hopped along the path, the blupee snorting softly and nipping at his heels when he wandered too far, unnatural purple eyes staring up at him with something that was fondness and a reprimand all at once, and in their care he’d made his way across the land of Hyrule to find what would be needed to return to his once life.
The fairies and their Great cousins had been welcome help, and in time, he’d been able to walk amid the populace of Hyrule like any other, as long as he kept a long cloak about him and his hair pulled back to hide where the roots would begin showing again in gold and ethereal blue.
Once Hyrule had talked about needing to hide in his world, about the curse that followed him and made the Hylian people afraid. He’d thought it bizarre and ridiculous of the people at the time, but now he understood what it was to live it.
When the portal opened beneath his feet the day that the Queen had reprimanded him for concealing and potentially damaging the strange limb, startling the Skeikah scientists and Queen both, he’d nearly cried tears of relief.
He was going away, somewhere where he wasn’t a science project and where, unless they traveled to his world’s future, no one would know how much he had changed. His copy of the slate had enough hair dye to last him a few months, and he was certain he could make more over time, and as long as he continued wearing the tunics and gloves the fairies had helped him to adjust to hide the glow the others would probably never catch on. Or well, he could extend it anyway.
His brothers greeted him with open arms and teary eyes, and in a strange parallel to his adventure, he found himself thinking of blupees when Legend had curled against him, stiff and cold on the outside, but with fingers that clutched his tunic just a bit too tight to really be reluctant. And Four, Hyrule and Wind’s exuberant hugs and chatter brought to mind tiny forest people and koroks with twigs for batons.
It was good to be home.
It was good to cook for other people again, and they were glad to have him cook for them, even if his fondness for both Gerudo spiced dishes and fae like sweet things had increased exponentially during his newest adventure. It was good to fight at their sides, even if it was strange to once again have to take others into account before he could select a weapon. It was good to sit around a fire and talk with the others too, but that was perhaps the hardest one; it had been ages since he’d had a proper two-way conversation with anything other than a tree or a korok, and neither of those was good at either staying awake or staying focused for very long.
There were some harder things to adjust to though. Fire, for one. Unlike before when he’d have been happy to burn an enemy camp to the ground, now he was wary of using faming weapons or spreading heat further than necessary. The same went for hunting; he couldn’t bring himself to shoot an animal unless it attacked first or they needed the meat it would provide, and even then, he felt a bit bad for doing so. Is this what Twilight had felt like? Is this why the rancher never liked hunting? Because he too knew what it was like to be on the other end of the bow?
But the hardest thing by far to readjust to was his name.
‘Wild’ they had called him again, and after months of ‘the wild one’, ‘wild beast’, ‘monster’ and every other insult, slur or title that had been used on him, it made him flinch ever so slightly at the words. And unlike the other things where his brothers dismissed it as a change caused by his adventure or an increase of maturity, it was something that the others seemed to either not notice or to excuse as situational.
He had adapted though, learned to keep a smile on his face where blankness had once been required in his knightly duties, and the more he wore the mask the easier it was to put on again.
He’d reveled in traveling across time again, in dancing through battles and exploring the world without the Queen reprimanding him in her cold tones to stop wandering off. He’d pushed himself to learn more music in the last adventure, and even if his experience was more with what few instruments Ganon had had time to help him learn, he’d enjoyed sitting down with the others and borrowing one or another instrument to play a tune and sometimes he even got to sing.
He fell to comfortably into his role though, even with the changes, and he hadn’t even noticed when they’d come back to his world. To be fair, it was different in the daytime, and Hyrule had changed so much in the absence of her hero as he hid himself away from the eyes of civilization. Towns and roads had sprung up where there had only been fields before, and the Guardians that had littered the land had all been dug up and hauled to the castle to be either restored or destroyed by the Sheikah, depending on what Queen Zelda decided after she looked at them herself. The world was so different to him, so unlike that which he knew, that he’d failed to keep as alert as he ought to have been when he wandered about an open market with the others, laughing and chattering away with the other younger ones as Time and Legend herded them towards the needed stalls.
It was a traveler that was his downfall, a man who’d seen the Monster Hero and had been among the first to discover the disguise he wore.
No questions were asked when the word spread, and Wild hadn’t caught on to the whispers until a stone had struck his cheek and he was stumbling forwards on the path.
“Wild!” Twilight was at his side in a minute, Time right after him as Legend launched a barrage of insults at the guilty party who’d thrown the thing.
“’m fine.” He was careful to wipe the blood away with his cloak, holding the fabric to the wound to prevent bluish blood seeping down his face and exposing him to his brothers. He wanted to keep them as long as possible and proving himself to be a monster, not even Hylian, would surely have them turning their backs on him.
“Get away from him!” A woman scolded, grabbing ahold of two of the younger heroes while several other shoppers had like ways grabbed Legend and Sky. “Are you dears alright? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
“Freaking what?” Legend shrieked. “Who’s the injured party here?”
“I’d avoid that thing, son.” A man huffed through a frankly walrus like mustache, eyes hard as they trailed to where Wild stood, cloak still pressed to his cheek as he attempted to wave off a fussing Twilight and Time. “It’s not natural. Sure, it looks like a normal Hylian, but that’s just an effective ruse.”
Another villager nodded. “It’s one of the Calamity’s puppets, a Gerudo-Bastard set on destroying the kingdom!”
“He’s the freaking hero!” Legend shrieked, barely being held back by a steely eyed Sky. “He saved all your freaking asses and all you can do is insult his flipping guts? Who’s the-”
“Enough.” There were few times that Sky’s voice reached levels worse than Twilight’s growls, but the stern command, regal and firm, froze all present as the man stiffened with a cold nod towards the villagers. “I see we are unwelcome here, and with that being the case it would be wise to spend our rupees elsewhere. Legend,” A tug to the boy’s shoulders. “Let’s join the others and be out of their hair. If they cannot be welcoming and kind to our brother than they will not receive our patronage.” And like a swan gathering it’s cygnets, Sky swept down the street, cape fluttering as he ushered the rest of them out of the town and back to the safety of the wilds. The village stared after them with wide eyes, as if they’d just been judged by a breathing god.
The stiffness in Sky’s shoulders faded as they neared the edge of the forest, and instantly the Chosen Hero been tutting over Wild, gently but firmly prying his hand away from his face with a kind smile that almost set Wild at ease. Almost.
“It’s fine, it’s just a scrape.”
“Still.” Sky crooned softly. “I’d rather we clean it up now and make sure it’s nothing worse than let it sit and get infected later.”
And though he’d tried to fight, his single Hylian hand was no match for the firm grip of the Skyloftian, and within minutes his face was exposed to the shocked faces and flickering eyes of his brothers.
“It’s blue...” Wind breathed as Hyrule darted forwards, hands already glowing softly only for them to stutter to a stop over Wild’s skin.
“It’s... Wild, why is your blood- why is-” The healer’s eyes had flickered golden for a moment, wide as they stared up at him. “What happened to you-”
“What the freak!” Legend had startled, blinking in surprise as he stared. “Your eyes are glowing!”
Shit! The healing properties of the arm had already taken affect and it was making everything act up all weird! He shot a glance down at his arm, one hand raising to tangle in the long hair he couldn’t even see at the moment, praying silently beneath his breath that nothing was showing through. It wasn’t, but that didn’t change how Hyrule had come to fixate on his right arm, or how the healer's fingers hovered over it sparking and eyes twinkling as he whispered softly under his breath.
“Wild.” Time had sighed. “I think this one is going to need an explanation.”
All the breath left his lung in instants.
He’d panicked to say the least and Time had eventually shooed the others away to make camp as the eldest hero had sat at his side, waiting silently for him to regulate his breathing. Touch was too much right now, and any attempts from the others to ease him down or help him level out his breathes had only made him panic more. But when at last his blue eyes blinked back to clarity it was to see Time sitting at his side, a gentle tune wafting from the Ocarina at his lips.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered, trying his hardest not to startle Time or otherwise make the situation worse. “I should have said something, I know. I just- missed being Wild and I wanted to come back and be normal and I didn’t want to-”
“It’s alright.” Time’s voice rumbled softly, a single blue eye turning to him with a pained look, even as the man offered him a hint of a smile. “None of us talk about our adventures either.”
“Yes, but you’re people.” He sighed, rubbing the fingers of his glove together. “You’re allowed to choose things.”
There was pain in Time’s voice when their leader answered. “And you’re not?”
“I’m not Hylia anymore.” He whispered. “I don’t count.”
“You count to us.”
“That’s because you don’t know.”
Time shifted, turning to face him fully as the ocarina was set firmly in the grass. “That’s because you’re family and we care. Wild, I don’t care if Demise himself named you the king of the dead, you’re still my kid and Nayru knows I’m not going to let you go without a fight. If that means fighting you, alright, but you’d best better believe that no amount of physical or mental changes will break the bonds we all have with you.”
Something, something damaged and crushed and stitched up and torn open again clenched inside of him, tears pricking at his eyes as he stared up at Time’s royal blue gaze. “W-what?”
“You could be granted godhood, made a monster, I don’t care. You’re ours and you’ll have to deal with that.” Time smiled, warm even with the pain in his eyes as he looked down at him. “So how about you start again, maybe with the facts rather than the insults. Or,” Time softened, brows furrowing lightly. “If you want, we can just sit here and you can choose to talk about this later. We do need to know, so we can help you and keep you safe, but you don’t have to tell us right now. You can take some time to figure out what you want to say if you need.”
And, well, shoot him, but Time’s arms had always been a safe place and there was one thing he’d wanted more than anything since he had come back. Wild threw himself into his grand-mentor's arms with a soft sob, clutching tightly to the other, ignoring the armor and its sharp points and awkward shapes as he tried to hold back all the emotions swirling in his chest.
Time’s arms folding around him broke the floodgates though, and when the man’s hand had stroked through his shortened hair, he’d had to bury his face in Tim’s neck to muffle his sobs.
“There, there,” Time hummed softly, rocking slowly as he held the broken wild hero. “Let it out, little one. I have you, I’ve got you and I’m not letting anyone hurt you.”
The moment they realized they loved you. (Isekai Au Edition) Part 1
Because this was my first time doing this I went a little crazy. If you want more information on this AU here is the Link!
Time:
- It had been welcomed with open arms.
- You two are literally the opposite but also very similar. Time is calm and stoic. You are chaotic and loud. But both of you are very cryptic.
- You’re the only person in the kingdom of hyrule currently that remembers what he had gone through. He feels like he can trust you with anything.
- It’s started with a slip up by wind and just spiraled out of control.
___________________________________
Time was discussing the groups inventory with Twilight and Wild when it happens. A small slip of the tongue followed by a laughter that could be mistaken as a fairy chime. He looked over to see your bright smile shining through under your hood. In front of you was the target of your amusement, the youngest link.
“That’s so cute!” You exclaimed to the horror of Wind, who was red in embarrassment. “Wait who’s dad?”
“Can we let this go?” The teen was covering his face now.
“It’s Time.” Four said without looking up from his book. Utter chaos broke loose in camp with just a few words. A chorus of any forms of agreement was making you laugh even harder. Time though covering up his true feelings about the situation was very lost. While yes, he acknowledged that he had slowly became the father figure of the group. That title didn’t involve you.
Unless…
“Time! I didn’t know we were married!” You bounced over to their leader looking at him with a playful smirk.
A life with you flashes in his head.
There could be a small cottage farm surrounded by the forest that reminding him of his old family and home. You could take care of the garden while he could take care the animals. In a few years the two of you might just have a few kids running around. Playing with each other without a care in the world. No more fighting. No more traveling. Just a simple lifestyle with a tight knit family. It looked peaceful. Everything he would want.
“You should have told me.” He was brought back to the present by your face looking up at him expectedly.
“I thought you knew.” He said super seriously. “We’ve got to raise nine children together already.”
“Hey! I raised you during the war old man!” Warriors called out from across camp.
“You’re the uncle then!” (Y/n) countered “I already say Twilight is our first born!” You declared pointing to Time’s flustered descendent. The rest of the conversation was tuned out as he went back to his thoughts once more.
Time lived longer than most of the heroes here by age 11. Yet not once did he stop to think about a future and family. He was so busy trying to keep out of hero work that it just slipped. Yet see you with the other heroes, knowing now that you were just as much a parental figure to the others as him. It made his softer just thinking about it and he welcomed that warm fuzzy feeling with open arms.
Reaching out he brush’s hair out of your face to kiss your temple. “I’ll propose to you properly later.” He said in a teasing tone to suggest he was only joking to hide the truth in that statement. Seeing your entire face flush red was really worth it.
“Gross Mom and Dad are flirting!”
___________________________________
- He’ll never once tell you straight if he liked you or was just playing along with the ongoing joke that the chain has.
- This time instead of you observing him. He wants to see how far he can go until confessing.
- It drives you crazy. Since you can’t get a read on him. You attempt to flirt back in retaliation. However, it always ends with you being the most flustered.
- Who knew the Old Man had it in him?
Twilight:
- It became a melancholic hopeless feeling that spiral out of control.
- He already had his heartbroken by someone before and he knows he shouldn’t get attached to you too.
- Yet he can’t stop himself from wanting to be near you. He heard you so clearly before.
- Now that he can actually speak to you directly, he wants to get to know his other travel companion more.
___________________________________
Being alone in the forest with you wasn’t what Twilight planned when dropped in a different Hyrule but here you two where. You offered to go on patrol with him when the others were setting up camp claiming it was too see if you could identify the era. It didn’t matter since Twilight enjoyed your company no matter what. The lack of conversation between the two of you didn’t bother him. If anything, it felt the most natural. Only a few words were needed for the two of you to understand each other. “Do you mind if I use my wolf form?” Twilight asked fiddling with the chain that attached to the shadow crystal around his neck.
You paused to think about it. “I mean you can. But be aware I will baby talk you.”
This got Twilight to stop walking. Maybe he lied. He doesn’t need a few words to understand your thought process. “Excuse me?”
“I can’t control myself around cute creatures.” You simply stated like it was the most obvious thing.
Instead, Twilight was burning up. You thought his wolf form was cute? Of all things you used that word? What did you think of human Twilight if you thought like that? Did he want to even know? He was searching for any way to take this conversation but it all lead to dead ends. “Cute?” Was all he could ask. His voice pitching up as he got flustered.
“Yeah?” You looked at him just as confused as he was. “Wolves are just like big dogs and to be honest you look more like a giant dog then a wolf.” Your explanation did not help at all with his situation. “If it makes you feel better you’re very handsome as a Hylian and also built like an go-“
Twilights brain was malfunctioning he couldn’t hear any more of what you had to say about him. He grabbed on to the shadow crystal, turning into his wolf form he ran. He didn’t hear you call out his name in surprise.
Hylia, what was wrong with him? You were just a friend. A very blunt yet gentle friend. Nothing more. Nothing less. Why was his heart racing so much? He had heard you shower him in complements before while on his first adventure. But hearing you say it to his face with no shame whatsoever was a different story.
Twilight knew what these feelings were and deep down he really wanted to act on them. But was it ok? Was his heart finally healing from his last love? Twilight was already aware this time that you had to leave at some point. He didn’t need to act on them despite wanting to. He could just be your friend and continue the relationship like that.
His heart was already breaking a second time.
Twilight was in love you and it was driving him crazy.
___________________________________
- Like Time, Twilight isn’t going to tell you about his feelings. Instead, he is going to forever pine for you.
- It’s going to be a slow process and you need to be aware that he will get hurt if you’re going to go back home.
- He’ll see you off with a smile, but as soon as your gone he will break.
Warriors:
- It was full of denial and fear.
- He went through the receiving end of someone’s obsessive love.
- And it doesn’t help that you’ve watched over their adventures. He vowed to not get that close to you.
- There was a need to destroy the endearing feeling he sees when you smile at him.
- Yet seeing you with a sad far out look on your face makes him scramble to your side to find out what’s wrong.
___________________________________
It was just the two of you. Weaving throughout the crowds of castle town. You were currently in Four’s Era and in the middle of the Picori festival. The group was long spilt up, leaving Warriors alone with the dimensional traveler. Soon even (Y/n) was walking away from him. He didn’t know why he followed, the argument in his head was telling him that it was so they didn’t get lost. Yet there was a part of him that knew that wasn’t it.
“Where are you going anyway?” He thought to finally ask as you reached a quieter area. “It’s going to be hard to spend time in the festival from here.”
“Yeah, that’s the point.” You were a bit snappy today, “shouldn’t you find someone else to hang out with?” Warriors just shrugged as you slowed your pace down to pause in front of the small river that ran through castle town. The silence now filled with the rushing of water as you sat on the bridge.
Against his better judgement Warriors sat next to you. Finally, he got to talk to you one on one but the normally impulsive and excitable person Warrior’s grew to expect had changed in that moment.
You looked so tired.
“Hey Link?” You finally called out to him “I know I shouldn’t ask you this but…” hesitation was new to your character. “How do I even start?” You rake a hand through your hair. Sweeping a part of your hair out of your eyes. “Was I ever helpful during your Adventure?”
Oh… Oh he really wasn’t the right person for this talk.
You look back you and towards the festival and he followed your gaze. From where they were he could only spot a few of his party members. Wind was with Legend and Hyrule playing some of the stall games. While Four was with his Zelda holding hands as she pulled him further into the crowd. “Last time I saw this festival it ended up destroyed by Vaati.” The wind mage was only brought up a few times by Four. All Warriors really knew was that the villain was supposed to be sealed away by the Four Sword, and that his power was connected by the dark mirror. “I found myself wondering if my presence even mattered.” Your shoulder slumped in defeat as you curled into yourself.
The instant need to comfort shot through Warriors. He wanted to reach out. He fought the urge to hold you. He bites his tongue when he started to think of embellished words to make you feel better.
What was wrong with him?
Warriors had to say something though. “I don’t know about Four or the others.” He didn’t even think about your presence in his adventure too much. If anything, he actively tried not to think about it. Here you were though a person and not a figment of in his imagination. “During the war, your voice and presence is what broke the tension. The moments that could have been my lowest, you were there saying things that I wanted to repeat out loud.” There was a fondness while he was looking back at the memories. From the moment he ran on the battle field foolishly as a trainee soldier. His pride grew upon hearing your praise and surprise when seeing him fight for the first time. To your excitement while meeting his friends from the other Eras. He shared your sentiments about Mask as you cooed over the child as Warriors fought by his side. Then your anger, disgust and pity towards Cia. While on his side, your empathetic nature had you morning during her passing. These where just the tip of the iceberg.
Just having someone voice out mutual thoughts on a situation helps when you can’t do it on your own. You feel crazy thinking the way you do. “With you there it’s like you always have someone by your side cheering you on and supporting you.” He paused to look at you. Conflicting emotions clashing together. You turn to look at him, your eyes only briefly visible through your bangs. Curiosity and guilt were swarming with in them. “I’m not the person to talk to about this.” He finally admitted out loud. “But I would be lying if I said your presence wasn’t important to us.”
The silence that followed was deafening. Was that not what he was supposed to say? Warriors tried to stay calm under your gaze.
You let out a huff of laughter covering your mouth and turning away from him a bit to calm down. “I didn’t think about it like that.” There was a pause where you looked back at the festive before turning back to smiling softly at him. “Thanks Cap.”
The smile that you had on your lips had Warriors stomach do back flips. A blush decorated his face as he turns away. “It’s something that should have been said a while ago.” He manages to say without stuttering.
You were really pretty.
The sound of a picto box followed by winds snickering, was ignored when the thought had just register in his head. He finally realized how far he fell for you.
___________________________________
- one by one his defenses lowered.
- With every smiled sent his way, with every laugh that he earned. He found himself wanting more.
- He slowly opens up, a slow process but it wasn’t as scary as he thought it was going to be.
- A teasing nickname here. A gentle touch there. He realizes he has gone too far.
Not the Mid-Winter fic I intended to write, but the idea came to me and I had to write it so here you are. Time finding Navi and her joining the boys on their adventure because sometimes they deserve nice things too.
Tumblr media
It was always mildly annoying when they were separated by a portal, Time found it so anyways. Sure it was good practice in being able to find one another and to make sure everyone remembered the various methods to 'call' each other. Of course some of the others had their tracking methods, Sky had his dowsing and Twilight his wolf form... but not everyone had those.
Time sighed and closed his eyes trying to focus on the way his magic tried to tug him. As he did so he felt a tug he'd almost forgotten about. His eyes flew open and he turned to face the direction it came from.
One step, slow and uncertain, then another. Soon he was running in the direction he'd felt that tiny tug from.
A glow under the snow came into view ahead.
Time dropped to his knees beside it, ignoring the twinge of pain from his back. He dug into the snow, carefully searching for the tiny form he knew was there under it.
Sure enough he soon held a tiny body, carefully cradling it in his hand before tucking it into a pocket sewn into his shirt, the pocket close to his heart so the tiny form would warm up quicker.
Once he was sure it was safely tucked into the pocket, wings arranged so they would stay safe as well, he got up and headed for the next tug on his magic.
As he traveled towards it his hand kept straying up to the tiny lump in his shirt and he felt like crying in relief. He'd searched for so very long, years had been spent traveling everywhere he could get to, and here she was.
He felt the tiny flutter of her wings against his skin and stopped. He carefully lifted her out of the pocket and settled her on his hand. She curled up into a little ball before stretching. Wings fluttered more and as she opened her eyes the glow got stronger, the same breathtaking blue he remembered guiding him for so long.
"Who?" She asked, peering up at him curiously, no doubt feeling the same tugging he'd felt towards her.
"Hello Navi." He replied, voice gentle as the Kokiri words easily came to him.
Her glow brightened as she flew up to eye level for him. She zipped around him a few times, studying him and going by the slight tugging he felt checking that she wasn't imagining it. At last she stopped in front of him again and flew a tiny bit closer, close enough to touch his face with her hand if she stretched.
"Link?"
He nodded wordlessly, a helplessly relieved smile on his face and tears in his eyes. She gave a delighted and excited chime before bumping against his cheek. Time laughed softly and cupped his hand around her so she didn't have to keep fluttering her wings to stay close to him.
"I missed you, Navi."
"I missed you too. I'm sorry I left."
"... I'm sorry I drove you away."
"No! That's not what happened." She pushed his hand away and flew a little away from him, for a moment he was afraid she was going to leave again but she stopped and turned to face him, wringing her hands anxiously. "I thought my task was over. That I was going to... well to move on. I couldn't let you see that, I didn't want to make you watch me pass on."
"Navi..."
"I'm sorry Link. I'm here though, once I realized I wasn't going to pass on I started looking for you and I don't plan to go anywhere without you again!"
"... okay."
She seemed to realize that he was afraid she would leave and flew to land on top of his head. He sighed and closed his eyes, simply allowing his magic to mingle with hers and the bond between them to renew itself. Not long after, just before she could start to ask questions, and he knew there were going to be many questions, movement came towards him.
Time turned towards it and grinned as he recognized Wolfie bounding towards him. He moved towards his descendant and knelt, arms stretched towards him. Wolfie crashed into him and barked happily, tail wagging wildly.
"I take it everyone else is together?"
A nod and Wolfie backed away before walking in a couple of circles while Time got up.
"Ah, Twi, I want to introduce you."
Wolfie stopped and gave him a curious look before transforming back into a Hylain.
"Introduce me?"
"Yes." Time reached up and gently picked up Navi from her perch. He held her out towards Twilight. "Twi, this is Navi. She was my companion for my first adventure... and the friend I keep looking for. Navi, this is Link or Twilight my descendant."
"Hello!" Navi greeted him. She flew around Twilight, no doubt inspecting him like she had Time previously.
"Hi, nice to meet you. Are you going to be joining us?"
"I'd like to." Navi said, bobbing up and down a little.
Twilight smiled brightly at that and nodded. "Sounds good. Well all of our group are named Link so we all got nicknames. The old man here is Time. Now I got a question for you."
"Hmm?"
"Was he really raised by a tree?"
Navi laughed and Time grinned. He draped his arm around Twilight's shoulders. They started along the path Wolfie had made to get to him while Navi happily told Twilight all about the Kokiri Forest and the Great Deku Tree.
monsters (pt. 2 to maneater) // v.h.
This part went through so many changes. At one point, it was a backstory and at another it was a twilight fanfic. But I think this is where it should’ve went. Besides that, this is very much inspired by Supernatural and Teen Wolf and those sorts of shows. So, hope you enjoy!
Your eyes shot open and sweat trickled down from your forehead. Your chest heaved up and down as you felt around, the feeling of rough leather coming in contact with your palm. Your sight became clear, and you were relieved to find yourself still in Vinnie’s car. You didn’t know what the hell that was about, but you knew something wasn’t right.
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Your boyfriend, Vinnie, asked. He kept his attention on the road, shooting a few worried glances your way. “You look like you just had a nightmare.”
You leaned back in the passenger seat and gazed out the window. “No, no…it wasn’t that. This felt real, like I was actually living it, y’know?”
“What was it then? Was it a vision?”
“I think so,” you sighed, reaching for your water. “It was hard to tell. It was weird.”
Vinnie softly chuckled. “Well, I wouldn’t expect your visions to be normal. What was this one about?”
“You.”
“Me?”
You nodded. “You, and me. We were going into a room and-“
“I think I know where this is headed, Y/n.”
“No, it wasn’t one of those dreams.” You replied. “I was some sort of monster, and I was about to eat you.”
With furrowed eyebrows, Vinnie quickly pulled over and turned to you.
“Why’d you stop?” You asked.
“You know why I stopped, Y/n. You just had a vision, an important one at that.”
You crossed your arms and rolled your eyes at him. Your visions—or “gift” as Vinnie likes to call it—was something that came in handy in your line of work. Being hunters for the supernatural, your visions aided the two of you in finding clues and the whereabouts of monsters or entities. But unlike those visions, this one was different. Never have you been the leading actress in your visions, let alone have Vinnie guest star. That’s why you weren’t taking this as serious as he was.
“You know how they work, Vin. I don’t have visions with me in them. I haven’t even had a vision with you in it.”
Vinnie sighed, “Remember what your grandmother told to you?”
“Yeah, that I’m different from most psychics.”
“And your visions don’t just let you see things before they happen. They actually let you live through the people within them.”
You sat there confused, trying to figure out what he was trying to get at. “I’m having trouble understanding. Are you saying that I can sometimes live through others in my visions?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“If that’s the case, why were you in it? You’ve never been in them.”
He shrugged, starting the car back up. “Maybe it’s a sign or something. Maybe the person you were living through had an emotional connection with whoever they attacked. Just like you and me.”
“They didn’t though. It was at a party, and they didn’t know each other. Whoever the woman was lured her prey in.”
He paused. “Did you say it was at a party?”
“Yeah. I don’t know who’s party though. Just that whoever’s party it was, you…or the guy…was very unhappy about being there.”
You heard Vinnie gulp before he did a hard U-turn and sped down the road. You clung to your seat, fearing that this may be the end of your life. “What’s wrong, Vinnie?” You asked, gripping onto your seatbelt tightly.
“Jett.”
“I don’t understand. What about Jett?”
“Jett’s at that party, Y/n. He texted me an hour ago saying that some of the boys dragged him out and he’s bored out of his mind. Y/n, he’s me. Well, not me, but the guy you saw in your vision.”
“That makes sense.” You responded, chewing on your bottom lip. “If Jett’s in trouble, then we have to save him.”
“I’m already two steps ahead of you.”
It didn’t take you that long to figure out that the party was none other than at the D’Amelios’ house. It was a single release for Dixie, and she was throwing a huge party in celebration. Obviously, due to your work you and Vinnie couldn’t make it. But, given the situation…you wished you had shown up earlier.
“So, what do you think we’re dealing with?” You asked, following Vinnie in the house.
“You said she lured him in so…possibly a siren?”
You shook your head. “She didn’t sing to him, though. It was a look.”
“Gorgon maybe?”
“Why would a monster eat a statue?”
“I don’t know? For minerals?”
You ignored his statement and looked around for any sign of your friend. “If not a siren, and definitely not a gorgon…then maybe it’s-“
“A succubus.” Vinnie interrupted. “Look, we need to split up and try and find Jett before he becomes Jett à la carte. You check in the main room, and I’ll check the kitchen and the bathrooms.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” You muttered, fiddling with your thumbs.
“Why not? We’d find the two of them faster that way.”
“We’ve only dealt with one succubus before, and that one alone was a bitch. This one can’t be any different. We need to be cautious.” You huffed, crossing your arms.
“Y/n, we can’t play it safe this time! Our friend’s life is on the line!”
“And I understand that, but if we go into this gung-ho…then we’re more likely to scare her away and lead her to some other poor guy. I know Jett’s life is at stake here, but so is a bunch of other peoples.”
At that moment, a scream rang out through in the crowd and the music came to an abrupt stop. You gasped, dropping to your knees and covering your throbbing ears. Vinnie fell next to you, wrapping his arms around you.
“That wasn’t just your average scream was it?” Vinnie asked.
You kept your hands on your ears. “That was a banshee. While her screams are normal to a human…”
“…for the supernatural, it causes pain.” Vinnie finished.
You nodded, steadily getting back on your feet. everyone stopped dancing and mingling, trying to figure out what the hell happened.
“Jett’s not dead yet, is he? You know, with banshees being walking Geiger counters for death and whatnot.”
“No, Jett’s not dead. Don’t you remember? When banshees scream, it means that someone is about to die, not that they have already passed. It’s a prediction, just like my visions.” You explained.
The two of you saw a wailing Charli being carried out of the room by Noah and Chase. You raised an eyebrow and said, “Would you look at that. I think we found our banshee. Now where’s our succubus?”
You scanned the crowd, finding no sign of anyone feeling the effects of Charli’s scream. The succubus wasn’t there. You then remembered the two leaning up against walls, but surprisingly, there was no one clinging to them. Then, you looked to the stairs where you saw a familiar brunet making his way up them. There was no doubt it was Jett and judging by his state, the demon had him right where she wanted him.
You tapped Vinnie’s shoulder, gaining his attention. “They’re headed upstairs…just like in my vision. Ugh, why didn’t we think to go up there first?”
“It’s fine, Y/n. As long as we know where he is, we can get to him in time.”
Just as you two were about to embark on your quest to save Jett, the music resumed, and a herd of people got back on the dancefloor. You and Vinnie tried your best to push through the sweaty bodies, but it proved to be much more difficult.
“C’mon idiots, move out of the way!” Vinnie yelled, on the verge of decking people in the face. You on the other hand, had a sweeter disposition, nicely excusing yourself. After some time, you had finally got to the stairs and flew up them. Reaching the top, you both were met with no Jett and no succubus. There was, however, an elongated hallway with many doors.
Vinnie groaned, lacing his fingers through his hair in frustration. “Great, we lost them.”
“Maybe not.”
You closed your eyes and tried to remember your vision as vividly as you could. You steadily breathed in and out as it began to replay in your head. In seconds, your eyes shot open revealing nothing but ghostly white orbs. You stepped to the first door on the right. The minute your hand touched the handle, you were back to normal.
“It’s this one!” you spat, bursting through the door.
You and Vinnie ran inside, finding an unconscious Jett on the floor. Vinnie hurried to your shared friend and checked to make sure he was alright. You searched around the room in search of the demon to no avail.
In the midst of walking back over to Vinnie and Jett, you felt some light hit your shoulder. After feeling the spot, you took a look at your finger, seeing it painted with blood. Your breath hitched as you slowly looked up. There the succubus sat, hanging from the wall with a sick grin on her face and blood dripping from the corner of her mouth. She roared and dropped from the ceiling, falling on top of you.
“Vinnie!” You screamed, wrestling on the floor with the demon. Vinnie’s attention shot over to you and without hesitation, he charged at the succubus, punching the beast dead square in it’s jaw. She fell off of you and Vinnie took this chance to straddle her.
“Keep her steady, Y/n!” Vinnie ordered, reaching into his jacket pocket. You did as he said, planting your hands on the demon’s wrist, keeping her from moving too much. She flailed around, speaking in tongues and shouting out profanities.
Finally finding it, Vinnie pulled out his father’s bestiary. As he flipped through the pages, the succubus stopped moving and stared daggers at you.
“I know about you,” she cackled, “Y/n, the youngest psychic of your family.”
“Don’t listen to her, Y/n!” warned Vinnie.
You ignored his warning and responded to the demon. “You don’t know nothing about me.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. Down in hell, we know all about you. And we can’t wait for you to join us and your whore of a mother.”
Tears welled up in your eyes, not from fear…but from rage. You looked to Vinnie, watching as he stopped on a page. He glanced up at you. “You ready?”
“Kill the bitch.”
Vinnie read off a vanquishing spell and upon doing so, the succubus began to cry out in agony. You struggled to contain her but after a few minutes, she stopped squirming. Her cries silenced as her body dissolved into boiling liquid, creating an acid pool of flesh and blood.
You let out a breath of relief. “Well, that was easier than the one in Devil’s Kettle.”
“That’s because we were amateurs then.” Vinnie replied as he stood up, bringing you with him.
You smiled, patting him on the back. “I gotta give you props on that punch. It was actually kind of hot.”
“No one can do it like me.”
“Don’t let my compliment go to your head.”
He pouted and then turned to a frightened Jett. “You okay, buddy?”
Jett softly nodded, shooting the two of you a shaky thumbs up. “N-Never better. How’d you know I was in trouble?”
Vinnie pointed over at you. “Visions. Only, she didn’t actually see you. She saw me.”
“O-Oh,” Jett said. “I guess, t-that’s cool. Thank you, Y/n.”
“You’re welcome.” You laughed, turning to Vinnie. “We did good, babe.”
“We sure did. All in a day’s work.”
“And onto the next adventure.”
