BtVS S8 - Angel is Twilight, Twilight is Angel
I discovered the BtVS comics in 2014, soon ordered the S8 TPBs (8 volumes) and liked it very much. My only problem was with Angel being Twilight – I couldn’t believe he would be capable of becoming someone so despicable, someone who could hurt the woman he always claimed to love, and cause so much death and destruction. I even said so on a letter that was published in the Slay the Critics section of the Buffy books. The thing is, after going through the stages of grief – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression - and reading a lot of metas, I finally Accepted the truth; Joss Whedon, more than anyone, knew his character and knew what he was capable of. Angel was the perfect candidate to impersonate Twilight and the grandiosity of his plan. It’s funny how Joss once said he “didn’t get Angel”… I think that for Angel, to be the Great Hero was always much more appealing than just “help the helpless” in a daily basis - he’s not someone for ordinary gestures, ordinary life, ordinary love.
Angel had been ensouled for years and years; he suffered, he brooded, he partied and saved puppies, he brooded some more, and he even helped to do some good (during the War, against the nazis, but it seems the experience didn’t stuck); and then, after one bad step he wallowed in self-pity for 20 years. It took Whistler to show him The Chosen One, for him finally decide to do something usefull with his life - only then, he had a purpose in life. Why didn’t he have a purpose before?
After leaving Sunnydale, Angel maintained a low profile for a few years working with a small crew in Los Angeles - but soon enough, he was joining an evil law firm to be its CEO, and next he was ready to play a yet bigger role. Right now, he is journeying into the past and changing things that can affect others.
So, Angel always had a penchant for these great gestures (or according to Buffy “he’s kind of gullible when it comes to destiny”…) – to make big statements without thinking much about the consequences, like when he decided to strike against the Circle of the Black Thorn – which caused LA to be sent to hell (of course it did, it should be expected that the Senior Partners wouldn’t take such an offense lightly).
And last but not least, let’s make it clear: Angel didn’t get possessed, he chose to play Twilight.
Next: The Twilight Crimes

Dean will bring Castiel back.
✔️ centuries old immortal (Angel, Castiel) is sent by the Powers That Be to help & watch over a human hunter (Buffy, Dean) and he ends up falling deeply in love
✔️ a blonde (Darla, Hester) his species (vampire, angel) he's known generations rants about him rebelling against his family by falling for the hunter then gets literally stabbed in the back
Darla: You're sick and you'll always be sick and you'll always remember what it was like to watch her die.
Hester: The very touch of you corrupts. When Castiel first lay hands on you in Hell, he was lost.
✔️ he brands the hunter (fang marks on neck, handprint on shoulder) and it's still there after they're resurrected
✔️ he is persuaded to go behind the hunter's back & increase power (Twangel, Godstiel), hurts their people (kills Slayers, breaks Sam's mental wall), gets possessed by an entity from another realm (Twilight, Leviathan), and the entity kills the hunter's father figure (Giles, Bobby) then he's rehabilitated by a dark haired overly sexualized former villain (Faith, Meg) he once kissed
✔️ he has a "true happiness" "curse" that is tied to his love for the human hunter
"the one thing I want is something I know I can't have"
"what I want from you I can never have"
✔️ he is sucked into Hell when he acts on his love for the hunter
Angel to Buffy: It feels nice, just to feel.
Castiel to Dean: Happiness isn't in the having, it's in just being.
Buffy's love + a symbol of their bond (claddaugh ring) placed on the spot he was sucked into Hell brought Angel back.

You... you changed your icon. Barb? YOU CHANGED YOUR ICON!?!
LOL! Yeah, I did that a while ago, back when Joss pointlessly broke Buffy and Spike up in S12. (It’s actually an icon I made for Livejournal back when... I think it was when the Twangel arc in S8 was coming out, so it’s weirdly apropos...) But I might change it again, since that’s old news now!

I'm all for hating on Whedon, but I gotta say that back in the day, Whedon was considered one of the more Spike-positive writers. We'd often get sides (script snippets used for casting bit parts) and occasionally whole scripts well ahead of the episode, and it was pretty common for scenes featuring Spike to get rewritten between the shooting script and the aired version to make Spike come off more sympathetic. (The script for "Hell's Bells," for example, has Spike and Buffy being pretty nasty to each other.) And it was generally acknowledged that Joss was the responsible party. Fury, Noxon, and later Scott Allie were all on record saying negative things about Spuffy and Spuffy fans, but Joss was more non-committal (that I remember, anyway.)
That said, Joss is ultimately responsible for the attempted rape, which was a terrible decision on multiple levels, AND responsible for the godawful Robot Buffy plotline in the comics (not to mention rubberstamping the Twangel debacle), so whatever dislike he gets is well-earned.
I actually really hate the way Joss Whedon treats Spike fans
As you should. The very concept of being mad at people for liking a character is already pretty weird, but it gets worse when you realize he was so mad that people liked Spike that not only did he constantly berate the fans in interviews AND used Xander as his self-insert to berate us in-universe, but he also treated James terribly.
When you write a story, people are gonna have their own interpretation and their own opinions as to where it should go, and some of those will directly contradict your own. It happens. It's normal. The fact that he was acting like fans (and James) were personally wronging him by caring about the show he wrote is absurd and just shows how immature he is.

And to answer the question, in S8 the writers didn't seem to know what the hell to do with Dawn. They gave her a dumb plot where she was magically turned into a giant, and then a centaur, and then a doll, and then finally it was revealed that it was all her fault for cheating on her demon boyfriend, who'd put some kind of transformation curse on her. So she apologized to him for daring to have sex with another guy, and then she and Xander became a couple, causing Buffy to jealously hit on Xander, who told Buffy he wasn't interested in her anymore since she'd picked him last out of a field of vampires. And then Buffy gets hit with a cosmic roofie by Twangel and has dubcon world drestroying space sex. S8: Female empowerment at its finest, folks,

Ok, I know this is a whacky idea, but bear with me. I think that there's a small but non-zero chance that Joss is actually planning on ending S12 with a polyamorous threesome. Now, don't get me wrong, I still think that the most likely ending is Buffy ending up alone, possibly with crumbs thrown to both sides of the shipping divide. But consider the following:
1. Sense8 has already gone there. Joss has a history of jumping on the diversity bandwagon a little too late. I'm not sure how the writing of BtVS S12 lines up with the Sense8 finale – it may be that the former was written before the latter went public, so there might not have been any flat-out copying – but it's not unknown for two or more shows to come up with similar plot twists just because it's steam engine time.
2. Maybe they used Harmony as a narrator just for the lols. But maaaaaybe...
3. When the first issue of Season 12 came out, someone tweeted Christos Gage and pointed out that it felt like cheating to have Buffy and Spike break up offstage, for no particular reason. Gage replied with something to the effect that they should see how the story played out, and see if they felt the same way. It could just be the sort of polite, noncommittal bafflegab writers always use to disappointed shippers, but maaaaybe...
4. With the current issue, they've ditched Illyria. Odds are she's going to stay in the future and we'll never see her again. Let's face it, no one cares about Illyria/Angel. It was filler, and not even interesting or well-written filler. That and Buffy's sudden attack of googly eyes over Angel could just be the requisite Bangel crumbs, but maaaaybe...
5. I've become more and more disenchanted with Joss's storytelling over the years, and Season 12 is far (very, very, very far) from his best work. But if there's no followup at all to Buffy moaning about how she can't make a relationship work, then he's an orders of magnitude worse writer than I think he is. And why can't she make a relationship work?
6. This is the last series – there may be stand-alones in the future, but this is basically The End. There is no way Joss can satisfy everyone; no matter who Buffy does or doesn't end up with, someone will be mad. So he can either disappoint half the fandom, or he can disappoint EVERYONE. The obvious way to do that would be for Buffy to end up alone. The less obvious way... and Joss strikes me as a guy who'd think trolling all the shippers in one fell swoop would be hilarious.
So yeah. I know it's a long shot, but I think it's a remote possibility? And I'm not sure how I feel about that. Once upon a time, it was a conclusion I could have gone for, and I don't think it's a bad idea in theory. In practice...
In practice, if they do it, it's gonna come off as another plot device that Joss pulled out of his ass at the last minute. Because if Buffy, Spike, and Angel were to really work together as a threesome, it can't just be Angel and Spike grudgingly putting up with each other for Buffy's sake. There's too much history, too much bad blood there. If it had happened right after S5 of AtS? If Buffy had shown up at the final battle and knocked both their heads together, then it might have worked. At that point, Angel and Spike had built a rapport. They weren't friends in the conventional sense, but they were family – they trusted each other, and had each other's backs. At that point, I could see them progressing to more, eventually.
Season 8 utterly ruined that potential, in more ways than one. Spike and Angel parted bitter enemies in that season, and Angel betrayed Buffy as thoroughly as Angelus ever did. And neither of those relationships was repaired to my satisfaction. I'll give Christos Gage this much, he at least tried to actually show Angel and Spike making a prickly sort of detente in Season 9, in a moderately realistic way. But Buffy's problems with post-Twilight Angel were papered over by Angel bringing Giles back to life. Buffy says flat out that she deals with Twangel's actions by not thinking about them. And that's pretty much a disaster as the basis of a relationship. Not to mention, Buffy would be a hard sell on the whole concept because (as we see in the current issue) she still has a lot of hangups still about her sexual desires. And Spike... I know he's supposed to be all boring well adjusted and shit now, but take it from me, watching the person you love flirt with an old rival still hurts. (I'd give a lot to get a peek inside his head this season, but the whole thing is so rushed, we're not getting any of the depth this story deserved.)
I'm not saying Buffy and Angel couldn't forge a new and stronger relationship out of the ashes of their old one; I'm saying that the writers have never given them a chance to do that. Ideally, they ought to get at least as much time to work things out as Buffy and Spike got. And so should Spike and Angel. If a threesome were the direction they were going, we should have gotten at least a season of the three of them working together, to show us that it could work, and that it would be an equal relationship on all sides, and not just a twosome with a sad third wheel. (Or three twosomes with three sad third wheels.)
So I have very mixed feelings. In theory, I think I'd like that ending better than the far-more-likely one of Buffy ending up alone, or suddenly going full-on goo-goo eyes for Angel while Spike's pawned off with some random character we barely know. (An actual Spuffy ending? At this point, I think it's less likely than the threesome, unfortunately.) At least it would have the virtue of confronting Buffy's apparent inability to commit. When Spike accused Buffy in S10 of only wanting guys she couldn't have, I didn't buy it, but I've reluctantly come to the conclusion that for Comics Buffy, at least, it's true: the minute she heard that Xander and Dawn were a thing, she hit on Xander. The minute Spike was no longer actively pursuing her in S10, she came on to him. The minute she sees Angel is with Illyria, she's burbling over him. You can kinda sorta even fit Satsu in there, in that Buffy knew it was a terrible idea to have a relationship with a subordinate, thus making Satsu forbidden fruit. Once she's actually with the object of her desire (Spike or Satsu), she gets antsy, and breaks things off (I would bet dollars to donuts that if Spike hadn't tried to break up with her first in S10, thus making him less attainable again, she probably would have broken up with him then.) Apparently even recognizing that she has this pattern isn't enough to get her to break it.
I don't like that the comics writers took this turn with her character; I don't think it applies to TV Buffy at all. As things stand, if it's not addressed at all, Buffy getting together with either Spike or Angel again would ring hollow: who's to say that in a year or so, when times are too peaceful again, she wouldn't get bored and ditch the vampire in question again? Yet another iteration of "Buffy needs to bake longer," or "Buffy doesn't need anyone, because she's a Strong Independent Woman" is, I think, the most likely thing for Joss to pull to get out of this. Or he could just ignore the whole mess, because he's trying to cram too much story into too few issues, and too much is getting lost in translation.
But maaaaybe...
