vicki is presumably still on some kind of pain medicine from the hospital, plus whatever she got from jeremy, and now her second round of vampire compulsion, on top of just the general trauma of her attack. she is unbearaby scrambled

I’m not really in the mood to start watching something new even though I technically have a lot I want to lol, so on a whim because I feel like it I’ve started a TVD rewatch attempt let’s see if I follow through! (I’ve only seen the whole show (like 7.5 seasons I didn’t see all of s8) once but I’ve seen majority of s2-3 eps multiple times and a select handful of s1 4 and 5 eps a couple times each and most s6 eps twice since I did a rewatch of just that season in December (technically I did not finish it but that wasn’t about my follow through I just didn’t have hbomax access for a while and by the time I had it back was focused on other things again) 

so anyway. notes I took rewatching the first couple episodes (my plan rn is to Not lb in the format I sometimes do because I think I’ll exhaust myself/my commitment, instead will try to either write some notes during or takeaways directly after watching the eps when I feel like it and share intermittently) 

Pilot 

-Elena Bonnie and Caroline are all so pretty here such pretty faces and pretty shiny hair all around 

-really enjoy how cynical Elena is even as she’s trying to put on a brave “today I will smile and it will be believeable” face. especially her talking about people’s reactions to hers and Jeremy’s grief and the “the rest of the world has moved on” quote near the end I can (unfortunately) relate to a lot of this so much more than the first time I watched the show :(

-Caroline’s immediate interest in Stefan + “it’s not going to happen” I do lol knowing how this all plays out :) 

-Bonnie’s ‘psychic’ ness so cute but also her predicting happiness… ironic not in a happy way. This being one of the episodes if not the episode where she’s happiest I think… 

-Bonlena moments are very cute in the pilot 

-running up the hill wasted on a boring moment in the pilot is so funny, but I do really like it ending with (in a sense) the first steferine moment 

-so much bad and poorly aged dialogue. obviously. but then glimmers of really good dialogue out of nowhere 

-I do sort of wish Damon’s crow powers had been a consistent thread. I don’t remember it being a thing after early s1? Would have been so funny 

-Vicki was a standout to me rewatching this. Knowing what happens to her is so sad… Matt should have died instead of her and She should have been around for the whole show fr 

-Jenna is an angel 

-the dialogue is worse than I remembered overall but I’m going to say the visuals/effects are better than I remembered? 

-also I actually rewatched the Pll pilot a couple days ago so was struck a bit by the similar structure of some things, they both open with the blonde girl who is killed/missing (only for TVD it’s a random girl we have no attachment to, for Pll it’s obviously Alison who is a Presence. and then it’s much later in the TVD pilot that we see Katherine who is the char with Alison haunting status for chars in s1), the focus on the liars but especially Aria/Elena’s attempts to move on from grief general quotes about moving on from the past, similar structuring to some of the Aria&Mike/Elena&Jeremy scenes. the funeral at the end of the Pll ep v Vicki being taken to the hospital at the end of TVD. There are others 

-it also was very funny to me that they stress the “passion” of SE vs Matt and Elena in the pilot considering that is going to become a tag line for DE

The Night of the Comet 

-Elena and Stefan waking up and both thinking ‘wow it’s so weird how I see color/am not as depressed as usual. and it’s all because I remembered what it’s like to be horny’ is hilarious sorry

-I am mad at that teacher I was mad on Elena’s behalf last episode now I’m mad on Jenna’s! Leave Jenna alone 

-the way Damon put his hand on Elena’s back/shoulders in their first meeting to guide her + general manner towards her like makes me uncomfortable. Which I guess is the intention at this point 

-Jenna looks so good I need her 

-when Elena is telling Jenna about Stefan being on the rebound and her responding that “at least it’s another woman wait until you date a guy with mommy issues or cheating issues or amphetamine issues” find this hilarious because Stefan DOES in fact have mommy issues as we will learn, and the show treats his blood issues as metaphorical addiction issues. cheating issues no but his whole transference deal with Katherine-Elena is maybe not so different you could make the argument? like it’s not that but there’s emotional dishonesty in a way. 

-also I just enjoy Elena and Jenna so much as a duo.

-I really like Bonnie’s outfit passing out Night of the Comet fliers with Elena 

-Bonnie touching Stefan and getting bad vibes if such a mood 

-there’s quite a bit of language iin these two episodes that’s aged badly but Caroline’s “druggies are the biggest attention whores” (paraphrased) line about Vicki particularly egregious 

-Gravity playing in the SE kiss is so funny because I first watched this pre Community so now I have the Paradigms association. lol

-but also Stefan’s “it was epic” line my brain made an association to Leronica “I thought our story was epic” and SE could Never be what Logan x Veronica is smh so I was a little offended 

*Also watched Friday Night Bites but actually watched most of that while working out and didn’t take notes. And I have reflections but, not that there isn’t plenty to be said about this episode but I’ll take a pass rn*

Damon is so trifling {1x02 Review}

Hi all! Welcome to the second review of TVD season 1. Considering that I haven’t like sat down to watch a full episode of the past seasons of TVD in a few years and my memory might not be the greatest I think I will start with my usual disclaimer: I will write my thoughts in real time so if I make a mistake at the beginning of this post, it will be corrected by the end. There will be anti-Damon and anti-Delena sentiments (I’m only mentioning these two because it’s the beginning of the series), I will probably bring up other shows and call attention to misogynoir, racism, anti-blackness etc. Ready? Let’s go.

1. OMG Help I’m Alive is playing in the opening scene. It takes me back. 

2. I forgot that we actually get to see randoms in the opening scenes before, you know, Damon kills them.

3. Actually very cinematic openings. WOW. Totally forgot. 

4. Elena’s face at remembering the all-night conversation she had with Stefan is just so affected, like that conversation changed her entire life.

5. “Do I look adult?” Jenna, WHO is the guardian? 

6. “Something about a woodshop to finish a bird house ... There is no woodshop is there?” Jenna, your nephew is a fucking drug dealer, how do you not know there is no woodshop? How uninvolved ARE you? 

7. Elena smiling being caught by Tanner for staring at Stefan is SO cute. 

8. I don’t know how people keep maintaining that SE had no buildup, they’re talking about Charlotte Bronte right now. You know, sharing interests? 

9. Stefan you are so OBVIOUS, does your head have to go upward when you hear “vampire’? Play it cool.

10. “Six classes, that’s hard to do...” Jenna, it is not hard to skip six classes.

11. Tanner may be a dick but him questioning Jenna’s parenting abilities is giving me life because girl, what the fuck are you doing?

12. Stefan’s jeans are better, thank God. 

13. Isn’t there a panic button in the room? Why would Matt have to go outside for the nurse?  So Stefan can go in. Lol, details. 

14. LOL Bonnie’s scandalized expression at Caroline’s “Just jump his bones already!” is everything. 

15. Jeremy legit just walked out of the room, no respect for Jenna whatsoever.

16. Not gonna lie, Matt looks good in that shirt in the hospital with Vicki. He had potential. 

17.��The girl who plays Vicki is not a convincing actress. 

18. Jeremy looks so young. 

19. Lol, Elena, Stefan, guys, PHONES EXIST. Dorks. 

20. Seriously, all Damon does is terrorize Elena. Also how do vampires get doors to close without humans hearing them? 

21. DAMON’S HAIR IS RIDICULOUS. It looks like a goddamn bird’s nest. 

22. And Ian looks really old compared to Nina. 

23. Those stupid fucking eyebrows. I want to punch him, man. 

24. “I know I should’ve called, I just...” at least they mention phones lmao. 

25. Ian’s eyes are not expressive, he just waggles his eyebrows a lot.

26. Paul actually managed to make Stefan look like a rock solid statue when he was glaring at Ian, like he is seriously underrated as an actor. 

27. Jeremy, just because you have a hood doesn’t mean you were invisible. 

28. “Quit skipping class or you’re grounded.” No, Jenna, he gets grounded FOR skipping class. Girl, bye. 

29. Really though, Damon legit fucked up Vicki’s life. 

30. We actually see random people in MF, like there are OTHER people in the town. 

31. Elena’s outfit is on point. 

32. “I get around” is playing back, lmao I made a multivid to this song. HAHAHA. 

33. “Is she worth it, uncle Stefan? This girl you came back for?” Seriously, this is important. Stefan’s life has become way more chaotic because he has to know Elena, he’s risking a lot so he can get to know her and it’s the second episode, the Us Against The World, Profound Love is BUILT INTO the narrative.

34. Oh yes, give Vicki some pills in the Grill and Vicki take them there too like y’all aren’t in public.

35. It seriously is a big deal that Jeremy is a dealer and the show is treating it like it’s just a phase, no it’s juvie, at the very least probation!

36. I like the SE candle meeting for a few reasons. Firstly, I find it very poetic and beautiful, the joining of two flames only to realize you’re connecting to your soulmate. Secondly, Ninas fucking eyes, man, the way they shine? The way her mouth parts? And Paul’s eyes, that smile on his face... This is legit chemistry.

37. I always think I can eat and watch something but I always get distracted and this bulgogi and rice is liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. 

38. I think a really underrated scene is when Stefan tells Elena that the comet has been travelling all alone and Elena responds, “Yeah, Bonnie says it’s a harbinger of evil” and then has this look on her face like omg, WHY would you SAY that to him? Totally stupid thing to say! Cause we all have those moments where you say something awkward to the person you’re vibing on and you’re like ... So I’ll just go die in a corner somewhere.

39. I also really like that when Elena says, “You seem to spend a lot of time apologizing” Stefan doesn’t deny it, he’s just like “I have a lot to apologize for”, I mean he’s honest about his faults. 

40. And the show actually did a good job with this scene showing how Elena is building walls around Stefan, she refuses to look at him, she keeps talking about getting hurt, she’s being forcefully guarded and then later on she decides she can’t do that forever and that she has something really special with Stefan even if it’s new. I never got that sense with DE especially since there was no grey area there, with Stefan, there IS a grey area like, you can decide to be without him and be away from the complexity of his existence and be unhappy or you can be with him, be in love but deal with chaotic circumstances, pick one, with DE it’s just like so be with the man who terrorized you friends and family or don’t be with the man who terrorized your friends and family.

41. I actually finished my beef and rice at the same time and I am HAPPY because usually they don’t give you enough bulgogi or they don’t give you enough rice. 

42. Elena was looking for you to tell her “um that’s a bullshit excuse” though, Stefan.

43. Damon’s. Hair. Is. Ridiculous.

44. Elena stop “threatening” Jeremy with therapy and send his ass to therapy.

45. LOL Stefan is actually REALLY intimidating because he just STARES and he’s all chiselled and intense-eyed. Matt is there babbling about looking out for Elena and Stefan’s just STARING and Matt’s like ... ... ...

46. Like how many times is Damon going to fucking terrorize Vicki? 

47. OK so I get that Stefan’s compulsion on Vicki was weak because he didn’t feed from a human so does that mean when Damon tells her to think really hard, she broke the compulsion and then Damon can re-compel her to think Stefan bit her? Because in 1x17 Damon says he can’t compel an already compelled person to let him into the house. So. 

48. Damon is fucking ridiculous and trifling. 

49. He isn’t even funny or charming, he’s just ANNOYING and unnecessarily homicidal.

50. Jenna, having a freakout about parenting your teen niece and nephew to your teen niece is ridiculous, like how are you asking your teen niece to walk you through parenting her? LIKE OMG. 

51. I don’t even get what Jeremy sees in Vicki though.

52. Yeah, not a fan of Caroline’s yellow dress and black boots. Glad her wardrobe got better in season 2.

53. Seriously, the way Elena looks at Stefan. 

54. And Stefan looks at Elena with such intense focus, I would be so tongue-tied.

55. Damon biting Caroline, being trifling af again.

1x02 is very suspenseful in the sense that you have Vicki freaking out because Damon fucked her up, Matt following Stefan through the hospital, a lot of false scares, lots of shadows, the narrative is still a little weak though, it’s why when I did used to watch TVD again, I would start from when Elena knows Stefan is a vampire because that’s when he show really picks up. On to 1x03.

TVD: the Ill-Advised and Embarrassingly Earnest Rewatch

1.02: The Night of the Comet

Our second random couple gets eaten, again getting dragged straight up into the air.  It’s very Supernatural and I don’t understand why it’s happening.

Elena and Stefan both wake feeling good.  Elena senses that there’s change; Stefan feels awake for the first time in a while.  They journal about it.  I try to remember that I like this theme.  I hate the narrative device so much, remembering is a struggle.

Stefan lends Elena his copy of Wuthering Heights, because says she wants to reread it.  Both of them are crazy.

The last time the comet came through, there was “so much blood and carnage it created a bed of paranormal activity.”  Sooooooo a hellmouth?  Basically it’s a hellmouth?

The first few episodes do their utmost to present Caroline as a slut - last episode’s throwing herself at Stefan simply because he’s fresh meat, this episode’s “it’s simple: boy likes girl, girl likes boy, sex”.  This doesn’t seem to show up much in her characterization down the road.  Somebody as control-freaky as Caroline doesn’t strike me as the one-night-stand type.

Baby Jeremy is having a rough time now, but also pretty much for the entirety of season one.  It’s sad and I don’t particularly want to talk about it.

Damon and Elena have their first meeting!  It’s SUPER DRAMATIC.  The aforementioned crow flies into the Salvatore house at her face, she spins away from it and comes face to face with Damon.  And I mean FACE TO FACE:

He then gives her a very short once-over which manages to only encompass her face and her neck.  It’s creepy, and so clever.

Damon then proceeds to not-very-subtly-at-all bring up Katherine, and how damaged his baby brother is.  “You say that like every relationship is doomed to end,” Elena says.  “I’m a fatalist,” says Damon.  Stefan shows up, is understandably (to the audience) alarmed, and tells Elena to leave.  Damon shakes her hand, and then, for good measure, kisses it.  Since Elena just got finished telling her friends that she and Stefan previously parted with “not even a handshake”, I gleefully read into this.  

Everyone gathers to watch the comet with those little candles they give you at the Easter Vigil.  Elena lights Stefan’s candle.  It’s not subtle.  But she doesn’t give him a pass for his suspicious behavior: “You seem to spend a lot of your time apologizing.”

Meanwhile, in the A-plot, Stefan tries to compel away Vicki’s memories of the attack, and fails, because he eats bunnies and not people.  It culminates on the roof, with Damon compelling Vicki to believe Stefan is the attacker. “You wanna expose me?” Stefan says.  “No! I want you to remember who you are,” says Damon. Stefan isn’t buying it: “So I’ll feed, so I’ll kill, so I’ll remember how to be brothers again? ...Let them chain me up and drive a stake through my heart, at least I’ll be free of you.”  It’s pretty harsh, but Damon only says “Wow”, and then fixes the problem.

Bonnie gives Stefan Elena’s phone number, because she is adorable.  But she touches Stefan’s hand, and blurts out in a psychic vision “What happened to you?” On the rewatch, knowing everything about Stefan in advance, it’s kind of hilarious.

The episode ends with Elena going back to the Salvatore house to confront Stefan.  She tells him she has convinced herself to give up, to come up with excuses, because she’s afraid that if she’s “happy for one moment then the world’s just gonna come crashing down”.  He echoes her words from earlier, “I met a girl, we talked, it was epic, then the sun came up and reality set in.  Well, this is reality, right here.”  It’s a little cheesy, but I love it: we convince ourselves that cynicism is realism, but actually, the moments of hope, the moments where we feel alive and awake and like we’re walking on sunshine - they’re just as real, if not more real.  Stefan and Elena have their first kiss; I’m so mollified by the thematic metaphysics of hope that I’m okay with it.

Music moments: the episode opens on “Help I’m Alive”, which is a GREAT summary song for the show and for Elena: “help I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer / hard to be soft, tough to be tender”.  Also, Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity” plays during the last scene with Stefan and Elena, and the context gives the already powerful song a nice, extra “oomph”.  The “you’re keeping me down” line in the bridge plays just as they kiss, so that “down” means “grounded”: he keeps her in reality.  

Eyebrow Watch: there’s mostly a lot of furrowed brows at this point in the show, so the best I could do was this:
