TV Times Interview - Issue 12 [18-24 March 2023]
Tap/click ‘Keep Reading’ to view the transcript.
Jamie Bamber is no stranger to crime dramas, having played detectives in gritty ITV1 series Law & Order: UK, Marcella and DI Ray. But for his current role in BBC1’s sun-dappled whodunnit show Beyond Paradise, the actor is enjoying a rather different beat as dashing vineyard owner Archie Hughes, who is far more interested in sampling fine wines that solving complex cases! As the Death In Paradise spin-off continues this week, Archie and his business partner - and ex-fiancée! - Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton) welcome a food critic into their cafe, hoping it could boost the fledging enterprise’s fortunes. All the while, it’s clear that Archie is harbouring feelings for his former flame, who is now happily engaged to DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall). Here, in an exclusive interview, Jamie, 49, tells TV Times why he’s relishing causing a stir in the (fictional) Devon town of Shipton Abbott...
The fourth episode feels like a turning point for Archie and Martha’s business, but he seems very distracted by his feelings for her, doesn’t he?
Yes, Archie is someone who’s living with regret. Martha is the one that got away, and it has taken him a fair few years to realise that that was the opportunity of his life. He’s a very successful guy with a lot of options; he’s been privileged from birth and he’s made the most of that. But I think the one thing he feels he maybe didn’t appreciate when he had it was Martha. And lo and behold, there she is!
When Archie originally offered to invest in Martha’s new cafe, was he genuinely trying to help or was there an ulterior motive?
A lot of times in life, we’re not entirely clear what our motivations are for different things that we do - they don't necessarily have to be one thing or the other. I think Archie enjoys the fact that she’s come back to Shipton Abbot, and he likes her and is attracted to her, he he likes Humphrey, too. When he met Humphrey, he was pleasantly surprised! Archie wants to be part of Martha’s new life, but whether he's planning to somehow come between the two of them, I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as that.
Are you worried about how viewers might react if Archie does cause probelms for much-loved couple Martha and Humphrey?
Obviously, the character is treading a fine line, but I am very secure in the knowledge that Beyond Paradise is an extremely well-put-together, accomplished piece of television writing. It’s still a ‘will they, won’t they?’ story in some regards, and Archie is a part of that dynamic. It depends on who you side with as to who you root for!
We hear there’s a big storyline for Archie in next week’s penultimate episode. Can you share any teasers with us?
It’s really fun! Like most of these multi-arc TV formats, each episode stands alone but there are various intrigues that last the series, so the nearer you get to the end, the more there is at stake. Episode five is great, because Archie is involved in the case of the week - and he is a suspect...’
Intriguing! Did you enjoy working with the other cast members on the series?
Yes, it was an absolute pleasure. And Sally and I got on very well from the first moment we met, which is important. Barbara Flynn [who plays Martha’s mum, Anne Lloyd] is a legend - she’s cheeky and has a glint in her eye that’s great fun to bounce off! It’s the same with Sally and Kris, too. They’re all accomplished comedic actors, and that was a real boon for me.
The show was filmed on location in Devon and Cornwall. Were you able to fit in any sightseeing?
Yes, I fell in love with Looe, in Cornwall, in particular, which is the main stand-in for Shipton Abbot; I thought it was beguiling in every way. My wife [Bad Girls star Kerry Norton] happened to e shooting a thing on the north coast of Cornwall, so she came down to Looe and we were able to do some walks along the coast and go out for meals. I played quite a bit of golf, too, because I was put up in the lovely [village of] St Merryn, which has some great courses!
Talking of filming in beautiful places... Would you like to see Archie pop up in Caribbean-set sister series Death In Paradise for a crossover one day?
That would be fantastic! I’m not overly familiar with Death In Paradise, having lived abroad for the bulk of it’s run, but I’ve seen enough to know that it’s a global success, and it’s super-fun to be part of its little baby sister show here. I couldn’t be prouder to be involved, and if that involvement continued in any way, I would be delighted for a crossover. And on a ‘Jamie and family’ level, a trip to Guadeloupe [Where Death in Paradise is filmed] would be great!
Last year, you played DCI Martyn Hunter in police procedural DI Ray, and before that Sam Wright in ITV1’s 2021 drama Innocent - both characters who seemed lovely but were later found to be harbouring dark secrets. Do you like taking on roles that shock viewers?
I really enjoyed both of those shows, and, yes, I spotted the same pattern - and it goes back even further to Marcella [Jamie played DI Tim Williamson in the first two seasons of the drama, from 2016 to 2018]. There’s clearly a thing going on with me and telly! I don’t know how much of that is move systemic in terms of casting and tropes, but any time you get to play ambiguity and wrong-foot an audience is always fun! But I’m not going to give anything away about where Archie ends up...
What are your next projects?
I’ve got two things that haven’t come out yet. One is Netflix thriller Who Is Erin Carter?, which I’m really excited about, and the other is Cannes Confidential, a kind of screwball cop show in the mould of [1970s action comedy] The Persuaders! That’s coming out on Acorn TV, and on French TV. It’s English-language, but we’re currently dubbing it into French, so that’s what I’m doing most weekends - getting on a train to Paris and putting my performance from English into French. I’m a pretty fluent French speaker, but it’s still a real challenge!

EWAN MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHED AND INTERVIEWED FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ABOUT BEING RECOGNIZED
Like most people, Ewan Mitchell is accustomed to anonymity.
So during a recent trip to Manhattan, he was surprised by what a hotel doorman asked when he arrived: “You haven’t packed your eye patch?”
The actor is still getting used to strangers making the connection in public.
“I wouldn’t think people would recognize me, but they do.”
“I think it’s because of my strong chin.”
“When I’m dressed up as Aemond and catch myself in the mirror, he scares even me a little bit.”
When he’s not in character, Mitchell is soft-spoken and occasionally flashes a boyish grin, though he retains much of Aemond’s seriousness and quiet intensity.
He is also very private: He stays off social media and in the past has shied away from sharing much with the public.
“Once you lose the mystery, you can’t really get it back.”
HE KNOWS THAT AEMOND'S KEY ROLE IN S2 MEANS HE MUST ALSO EMBRACE THE SPOTLIGHT:
“There is a point where you have to go, now’s the time to pull back the curtain.”
Like Aemond, Mitchell is a second son.
He grew up in Derby, an industrial town in the middle of England, and his parents expected him to follow his older brother’s footsteps and work at Rolls-Royce (the aerospace and industrial technology company, not the carmaker).
HIS INSPIRATIONS AND BECOME AN ACTOR
Inspired by films like “Citizen Kane” and “Taxi Driver,” Mitchell knew early on he wanted to become an actor.
When he was 13, his teacher asked each student in his class what they wanted to do when they grew up.
“Then it came to me, and I said, ‘I’m going to be an actor,’ and everyone laughed at me.”
His family could not afford tuition for drama school, so Mitchell attended a two-year vocational school, where he studied design and technology while working part-time at a restaurant and in customer service at a local soccer club.
Midway through the program, at 17, he was accepted into the Nottingham Television Workshop, a drama group that trains young people in acting.
Through the Workshop, Mitchell landed a leading role in a 2015 short film called “Fire,” about a young man who leaks fire from his hands.
Once the short was released, Mitchell downloaded it onto a dozen CDs, took the train to London and stopped by the offices of every agent he could find, handing them each a copy.
The one person who called back continues to represent Mitchell.
“By hook or by crook, I wanted to make sure that I was going to be in this business.”
ABOUT BEING CASTED AS AEMOND TARGARYEN
Aemond’s growing prominence in the show requires Mitchell to embrace the spotlight as well.
“There is a point where you have to go, now’s the time to pull back the curtain.”
But being cast as Aemond in “House of the Dragon” has been his biggest professional turning point by far.
“Since landing him, I feel like I’m able to now steer the course of my career.”
Mitchell had been rewatching the classic Hollywood adventure film “The Vikings” (1958) and musing about how he wanted to play a morally dark character similar to the one played by Kirk Douglas when he received an email inviting him to submit a taped audition for Aemond.
When he eventually auditioned in person, he left a lasting impression on Ryan Condal, the showrunner for “House of the Dragon.”
“When Ewan came into the room, he just had this presence to him that I can best describe as unsettling,” Condal said.
“It was kind of quietly terrifying the way he performed it, and it was totally different than everybody else. And then he thanked us very politely and left the room.”
Condal recalls asking Kate Rhodes James, the casting director, “Is he always like that?”
She replied, “Oh no, he’s just a very intense northern boy.”
To prepare for his role, Mitchell did not watch “Game of Thrones.” Instead, he read portions of “Fire & Blood,” the book by George R.R.
Martin that inspired the show, and studied the performances of Michael Fassbender in “Prometheus” and Peter O’Toole in “Lawrence of Arabia,” each playing a figure who wields power for his own ends.
ABOUT MATT SMITH AND DAEMON TARGARYEN
On his first day on set, Mitchell consulted with Condal and decided that he would avoid interacting with Matt Smith, who plays Aemond’s similarly menacing uncle and rival, Daemon, in order to heighten the tension between the two characters.
Mitchell had grown up admiring Smith’s performance in “Doctor Who.”
But on set Mitchell avoided any eye contact with him, keeping his distance until the climactic scene near the end of the first season when Aemond and Daemon finally face off.
“There’s this addictive kind of quality when you’re in the shoes of a character.”
“When you lose yourself for a moment, it’s almost like a dream.”
ABOUT HIS HOME AND HIS DOGS
When he isn’t acting, Mitchell still lives at his family home in Derby and spends time with his dogs, three whippets named Eva, Bella and Bonnie.
“Now that I’m on it.”
“I’ve just got to stay on the dragon.”

s2 episode 9 thoughts
whew! i had a busy day so it's nice to unwind with some scully and mulder time. although by the end of the episode i didn't feel very unwound tbh. it was still time spent with the babygirls, so i can't complain.
so we start with some volcano research. my only note here was "i know a geologist" which is true! shoutout to my one professor. you were chill but i hated that class.
there's a dead guy in the volcano which tbh doesn't seem too surprising... i mean volcanoes are very deadly. but it seems to be one of the dudes involved with the project so that's weird because why would he go down there?
there's this stream going on of the inside volcano and something is disrupting it... hate to see a streamer interrupted :(
then we had the title sequence but for some reason i was wondering, do you think if they got married they'd hyphenate their names... scully-mulder... mulder-scully... does it roll off the tongue? hmm...
so firewalker (the title of our episode) is a robot that goes into the volcano. noted.
here i wrote "holy fuck scully is beautiful". all she was doing was standing there but man.
the scientist who has come to them requesting help is like, this lead scientist named trepkos started this project, and scully says "i always heard he was brilliant", which raises the question: why is scully keeping up with volcano science? nerd
at this point the visiting scientist was explaining how he and trepkos had a professional breakup kinda thing and i'm very sorry for them but i genuinely could not take my eyes off of scully. hope they work it out or whatever. i have bigger priorities.
she wants to get out there and investigate but mulder says "i don't think it's a good idea for you to go" AUGHHH. i am wailing and tearing my shirt. she says that she's fine!!! really!!!
and he has this look on his face that says "i cannot tell this woman what to do, even after she just woke up from a coma, and i never will be able to" and he's very right in that regard
HELICOPTER TIME! mulder is such a gentleman helping her climb out
she has very messy hair at this point and the scientist seems a lot more concerned about his equipment than the fate of the people trapped inside the compound and she seems so thrown off by this
next we have some BIG ASS FLASHLIGHTS!!!! WOOHOO
at this point i made a note that i think i might have been going feral because mulder also looked SO good prowling around that creepy base. and i don't take back my observation but i will psychoanalyze it a bit later. reluctantly.
a creepy dude is hanging around the corner. OH SHOOT he tries to bash mulder's head in and he is MAD "do you always greet people this way?" LMAOOO he took it personally
the other scientists in the base seem to regard the missing trepkos as a threat... hmm...
i really like this jesse character, who is a student and is here to do some research with her advisor
mulder asks for the data on the research trepkos has been doing and she says he destroyed his field journals and computer discs. ahh, computer discs. my old friends. i used to have some games on discs when i was a kid. positive memories.
mulder sees scribbled in some of the notes trepkos didn't destroy that he had written about a "new life form" which honestly kinda happens a lot. like people are always discovering new life forms but the gag is they're beetles. everyday we find new species of beetle. they just won't stop coming. so i'm thinking, well they wanted this to be all dramatic, but statistically it's probably just a volcano beetle this guy found.
mulder and scully have an exchange and again i'm distracted by her freckles but she says he's being paranoid and i'm like. yeah that's kinda his whole deal. mulder being paranoid is like a fork spotted in the kitchen.
so the other scientist who was checking on his equipment was, at this point, killed by trepkos. with a rope. and we get the great closed captions "(neck cracks) (body thuds on ground)" which were very descriptive of the whole process
mulder and scully are having a science based argument on the probability of a silicon-based life form and it was really funny to me because it was a nerd off. and frankly i wouldn't go into a science debate with a doctor but mulder is going full steam ahead. it's getting heated and i'm like damn does this ever lead to them kissing because i can see it happening. anyway she's like no trepkos did not discover a silicon-based life form (spoiler alert: he did)
he's looking around like damn. i'm glad she's back but she's such a pain in my ass <3
scully goes to talk to jesse by knocking on her door and asking to chat and then not waiting for an answer and coming in because that is my girl!!!
jesse says trepkos stopped taking his pills that treat his bipolar disorder and he started being weird, saying they polluted his mind and that she was "polluting his body" which has... implications i prefer not to think about?
(why must we make erotic the bond between a student and their thesis advisor? there is no stronger connection! but. not in this way, tv writers, not in this way. i mean Maybe it wasn't meant that way but it seemed like it was)
mulder is streaming the descent into madness of trepkos because he recorded his ramblings which is probably what my friends on my private story think each time i post. but he's going on about finding a silicon-based life form.
this whole time one of the scientists has been very noticeably coughing and losing his voice and i knew it was gonna go somewhere but all of a sudden he collapses. and mulder yells for scully who is undergoing her shift to Doctor Mode. but we see his neck... pulsate? is that the best word to describe it? augh i don't want to even think about it so we'll leave it there
(jesse was also looking super suspicious but i liked her...)
anyway they put the sick guy on a stretcher and he's down and out until he isn't, and now he's making a RUN for it. he runs and runs and falls in a ditch until a THING takes over his body and explodes. i thought it was a worm at first and it was sososo gross i started sweating. i do not like body horror. the things i endure for these two.
so scully's doing some testing and she's like, yeah this is a silicon-based fungus. and poor jesse is having a nervous breakdown because she has been in this base for 8 months and she just wants to go HOME but now they have to quarantine and i felt so bad for her.
then i remembered the line about her "polluting his body" and things were adding up... and they were NOT looking good for her... no... i cannot do this...
scully's really worried about jesse which is justified because this poor girl is freaking out. but mulder is really worried about scully! he wants to go look for trepkos and he's making excuses why she shouldn't come and finally settles on the need to autopsy the body which he seems to both genuinely believe and also say to keep her back at the base
she knows he's being protective so she says "i'm here and i'm not going anywhere" which is sweet but girl you were in a coma. they had your gravestone made. you are lucky he has not put you in bubblewrap entirely. you can't blame the man for needing you to be safe!!!!
he says he's counting on her and grabs her shoulder with some heavily lingering eye contact that, when i see in gif form, i will surely slam the reblog button upon because. good lord.
jesse is talking to the other guy and he says something like "do what we said" and i'm thinking oh man, they're gonna try to get mulder (spoiler alert: they did not quite do that)
the guy is like "you need a guide to go get trepkos" and i'm even MORE suspicious but his reasoning kind of does make sense- it is a volcano maze, after all- still, when mulder goes with him i was tense
BUT THEN he immediately gets shot with a FLARE GUN? which i did NOT see coming. and trepkos emerges from the back of the volcano caves all burned and wild-looking.
he's covering the newly dead body with gasoline and mulder's asking why he's trying to kill him twice when we see the parasite wriggle in his neck (GAG) so then he shoots him with ANOTHER flare to burn up the evil creature. and he's explaining how if you're exposed to the parasite's spores you're gonna be sick...
and scully is back at the base with jesse... who was exposed... so she's not going to be safe...
and we see jesse in her room gagging and convulsing... oh man... it's not looking good....
trepkos is not letting mulder leave, but mulder does not give a fuck LMAO he says "you're gonna have to shoot me then" and goes to walk out... this man was really thinking "they are NOT gonna take scully from me again" and i know that is exactly right!!!!!
NOOOO the lights go off in the compound........... NOOOOO JESSE ATTACK.....
she's handcuffing her and scully together!!!!!! but scully was smart enough to get her behind a door really fast before jesse collapses and the fungus explodes...... but the handcuffs... was the door open a crack?? was it enough to get her infected???!?!?
mulder BURSTS in to see her handcuffed and she keeps repeating "i'm okay, i'm okay" but he must be so shocked because he asks "you alright?" and gently cups her face and at this point i wanted to do some powerful screaming to let out the things i was feeling
we see trepkos come in and look at jesse's body and he says that he told her how this experience would change her life... and i'm getting callbacks to when mulder told scully it would be a nice trip to the forest, but then the whole evil bugs thing happened in s1 ep20... and i am filled with a deep sadness...
so the duo has been sentenced to a month long quarantine, which i'm sure had to absolutely drive them wild. but i think my mutual wrote a fic on this subject so i just simply have no choice but to go read it now! and i assume that, since there are more seasons, the spores did not actually infect them
(and mulder, who was earlier suggesting time off for scully, must be some mix of terrified that any day now the symptoms will start showing and the end will be near, deeply satisfied that she has been forced into getting rest and healing like he wished, and regretting his words that she should take a break, because here she is taking a break. with him. and they're driving each other crazy)
we see trepkos hiking back into the volcano maze with jesse's body and it was actually really sad :(
overall a good episode, another one in the vein of s1 eps 8 and 20 where there is some sort of contagion and we must figure out from where it started and to whom it has gone... but the formula in these episodes keeps me on the edge of my seat and allows for a convergence of doctor scully and protective mulder, two things i am deeply invested in seeing. and seeing mulder try and keep her away from the case after her whole incident made me emo as hell!!!! he is never going to let her out of his sight again unless he has to go keep her safe by finding the wild man in the volcano!!!!!! and even that backfired!!!! ugh my heart!!!!! i love them so deeply!!!
rip my girl jesse i thought u were rad in the brief time we knew each other

TV Times Interview - Issue 25 (24 - 30 June 2023)
Tap/Click ‘Keep Reading’ to view the transcript.
Catching criminals isn’t often a glamorous business, but when your patch covers the sun-kissed streets of Cannes in the south of France, it definitely helps! In Acorn TV’s new six-part romantic crime crime drama Cannes Confidential, no-nonsense detective Camille Delmasse (French actor Lucie Lucas) is having a stressful day when she collides with charismatic art collector Harry King (Beyond Paradise favourite Jamie Bamber). For Camille, it’s hate at first sight - but as she keeps encountering Harry while investigating the murder of a famous street artists, the barbed banter between the two takes a flirtatious turn. Could some French kisses be on the cards? TV Times joined Jamie, 50, for an exclusive chat...
What can you tell us about your character?
When we meet Harry, he has an accident with Camille on the street - he’s on a bike an she’s in a car - and he fins himself gradually implicated in this case she’s investigating. You don’t really know anything about him, and we slowly suss that he’s probably up to no good The character reminds me of the Pink Panther movies, and Cary Grant films like To Catch A Thief [1955]. Harry keeps popping up in town and infuriating Camille, so they get off on the wrong foot. The badinage was what drew me in - that sexual chemistry between two people who find each other intolerable!
How quickly did you develop that chemistry with Lucie on set?
It was easy; Lucie’s so open to ideas and she’s got tremendous energy. When Harry finds out that Camille is a police officer, it’s a problem for him as he;s trying to hide a secret from her. But he happens to know a lot of the characters involved in the supposed wrongful imprisonment of her dad, the former chief of police, so they have something that the other needs. The make a quick agreement, and from that moment, they gradually get more dependent on each other as they become this odd couple that works together solving crimes.
What are your favourite shows featuring mismatched partners-in-crime-solving?
Moonlighting is the one I remember from my era, with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis [the American comedy drama ran for five seasons between 1985 an 1989]. The chemistry was hilarious, and the writing brilliant. The Persuaders! [ITV’s 1970 action comedy is another, Actually, the genesis of this show is that the producers were trying to buy the rights to remake that, but, for one reason or another, the couldn’t, so they thought they’d invent something different, which, at it’s heart, had little nods towards Tony Curtis and Roger Moore running around Côte d’Azur. But, obviously, they changed it completely!
Was it an easy decision for you to sign up for a show where you’d be filming in a location in beautiful Cannes?
I’m a big Francophile and I’ve lived in France quite a bit over my lifetime, so anything that gets me over the Channel for a couple of months is something I will entertain, for sure! But it was more that that. I’ve played some quite dark, dramatic roles - [American sci-fi series] Battlestar Galactica and [ITV crime thriller] Marcella spring to mind straight away - and I feel like I’m a much lighter person than that. This guy felt a bit closer to who I am - not so much the potential con man, although I’m a multinational so, like Harry, I do have multiple passports [laughs]!
How hot was the weather during the shoot?
The most challenging thing I had to deal with was wearing a three-piece suit in the sunshine for three months, and trying not to ruin it with perspiration! Pascale Rodi, my dresser, did amazing work with portable fans, whipping one shirt off and drying it while I wore the other one. It was fun to play a dapper character, but he’s meant to be cool and not sweating all the time, so keeping the clothing dry was hard!
Did you get to shoot scenes in some exciting places?
I didn’t know this, but even the word ‘Cannes’, because of the film festival, is copyrighted, so you have to get permission to use it. But in doing that, we had the mayor’s office on our side, so we had access to some of the more extraordinary locations. We shot in Le Majestic hotel for two weeks - the presidential suite blew my mind; it had a private swimming pool. I found myself there for a couple of days with my own room - that could never happen any other way!
Could you squeeze in some sightseeing on your days off?
The work schedule was pretty heavy, but we had weekends. My daughter [Jamie shares three girls with his wife, Kerry Norton] had just finished her A levels, so she came out and we drove across the border into Italy, which was lovely. I didn’t do too much tourist stuff around Cannes because I know it pretty well but we went to the beaches and had nice dinners. I also played a bit of golf, which I love to do, and I found a tennis coach, too. I had a good time filming this, I can’t lie!
PERFECT PARADISE
Jamie was last seen on our screens earlier this year in series one of BBC1’s hit coastal crime drama Beyond Paradise playing vineyard owner Archie Hughes, who still harboured feelings for ex-fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) - even though she was now engaged to DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall). While Martha declined Archie’s amorous advances, Jamie says he had a whale of a time working on the programme... “I loved it! he smiles. “I was so thrilled with the reaction. Friends were calling me up because their kids wanted to ask me what Archie was doing, trying to steal poor Humphreys fiancée from him! People got really invested in that character and that story - I’m very proud to have been a part of the show!”

From TV Picture Life April 1968 "The Stories Star Trek Tried to Censor".
De's I posted separately, but here are Bill's and Leonard's.
A really weird set of articles. Did the magazine just say "tell us about something traumatizing?" and the actors said "I'm glad you asked, let me get this off my chest"? Also, why would Star Trek censor these stories?
Bill's article mentions he's dressed like a gangster ("the Star Trek crew had just discovered a new planet inhabited with Chicago gangland types"), so he was interviewed between 2-9 November 1967 when shooting "A Piece of the Action."
Another weird set of photos because in the 1967 September issue, the was an article called "How Leonard Nimoy Tried to Save William Shatner's Marriage" with an "inside source" (speculated to be Deforest) being quoted. I do not have this article, but it was mentioned in "These Are the Voyages Season 2". A lot can happen in a few months time, but all of this, coupled with De's article, seems a little tabloid-y.
