Story:

When they were kits, she was the good one.

Whisperkit was quiet, prone to moon-watching and nonsense, so Longshine pushed her to be the best.

When they were apprentices, Whisperpaw stopped talking as much, their voice dying in their throat. Yewpaw, desperate, traveled to the Watching Rock with them, hoping that she could find answers.

Instead, she found the shadow.

“What little cat dares?” It asked.

“I dare.” She responded. She had spoken with these things before. She knew the rules.

“What name may you give me?” It asked.

“I may give you no name, but you may have the name Longshine. Not freely given.”

The shadow swirled. “What would you ask for?”

Yewpaw stood firm. “Give my littermate a voice, and I shall follow you.”

The shadow blinked.

“That power isn’t cheap. What can you offer to cement your deal to them? You have nothing.”

Yewpaw glared at them. “This life. For their voice. That has power, correct?”

The shadow nearly purred. “Your own life? That has much power. Do they agree?”

Yewpaw turned to Whisperpaw. They nodded hesitantly, and the shadow grinned, attaching their hooks to Whisperpaw.

“A name, freely given, to you, for your sacrifice.” Whisperpaw’s voice was low, burring. “Yewpaw, you may become Yewpool.”

Yewpool smiled.

“You will be no more, come sunrise.” The shadow warned.

Yewpool nodded, feeling her voice constricting in her throat. The shadow slipped towards her. “You will fade, come sunrise, but you will live on forever in the shadows of your blood. Your curse is to never die, for as long as the blood continues. You will dream forever, never knowing the rest of the afterlife.” Yewpool nodded, numb spreading over her limbs like cobwebs.

“You are my second shadow, the one who has gifted. You will not move as the other shadow will, but you will live forever in the shadows of our kin.”

Yewpool nodded, summoning the last words she would speak in her lifetime. “Your name.. Wordweaver.”

And so, the curse of the Two-shadow was born.
