the european turtle-dove is a member of the columbidae family (pigeons and doves) that breeds over a wide spread of the southwestern palearctic, but winters in northern sub-saharan africa. these iconic birds are more slender than most other doves, and they are often identified by the black-and-white patch on the sides of their necks. in the united kingdom, the birds’ population has decreased by 93% since 1994; this is commonly attributed to a change in farming practices that left the doves with fewer weed seeds and shoots to feed on. additionally, overhunting of the doves has led to population decline; a 2001 study found that between two and four million birds were shot in malta, cyprus, france, italy, spain, and greece. a hunting ban introduced in 2021 by the european commission in france, spain, and portugal had by 2024 resulted in a 25% increase in the western european breeding population.

JOKE-OGRAPHY: 1. Following from the last two comics, Mary has to make a sacrifice as a new mother, according to Mosaic law (Leviticus 12:1-8).  As a poor family, she and Joseph can't afford the prescribed sacrifice of one yearling lamb and one turtledove, so they address their "Mosaic Law and You" brochure and see if there are substitute sacrifices they can use.  It turns out there are!  According to Leviticus 12, if they can't afford a lamb, they can sacrifice TWO turtledoves (or pigeons) instead of one.  "Two turtledoves" is one of the lyrics in the song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," so in this cartoon, I add a list of other possible substitute sacrifices as if the song is an extension of the Leviticus law.  It is not.  I am a lying liar, who has lied. 2. "What's a french?" reflects the fact that Mary has no idea what "french" means.  Back in ye olde Bible dayes, France did not exist in its current form, as St. Joan of Arc hadn't yet slain the titan, Grumblebuff, whose head became England and whose body formed the rest of Europe.

Personal challenge: a simple sketch each day

Goal: forcing me to keep things simple - inking, shading, just a few sashes of colour

Improvement pursued: to get the movement, the emotion, finding how to add depth, learning how to leave things barely finished

Max time allowed: 2 hours instead of 8-20 on my previous projects (1h30 here, I had a rough day at work and I just couldn’t have the energy to draw a more difficult prompt)

Today's theme chosen by me: Rough day? So, what about a rougher night with your bestie. And an extraordinary amount of alcohol™. Aaaaand the weirdest waking-up ever.

As I was exhausted after work, I just wanted to draw a sleepy-lazy-drowsssy Snake!Crowley, and Turtledove!Aziraphale came along to the party. Yessss, a turtledove, not a dove. Turtledove, I like them, me. Why? Because in France, they are grey – so it seems perfect for Azi. And they have a collar of darker feathers, just like a bow tie. And they have the cutest softest soothing song I have ever heard. Aaaaaand I am positively sure that when they bond, they bond for life. *mic drop, goes back to sleep*

Day 10: “After my Turtledove!Aziraphale... Meet the Ineffable Birds!” – Good Omens

While we were talking about this dear Turtledove!Aziraphale, one of my followers @ineffablebirds, mentioned that they would have like to see Crowley as a black-billed magpie… the idea kept running a looong way through my head. So… here is a little gift, my friend! :-D

Today's theme chosen by me: So, of course Crowley is linked to the crow – and even more so since his little trick in the Job minisode, and the headcanon (?) about how he chose to change Crawly in “Crowley” in remembrance of this first adventure / collaboration with Aziraphale.

Buuut, Aziraphale is often associated with a dove (white hair, purity, Heaven and so on) and yet, yours truly decided that the turtledove was more appropriated (It happened right here!)

So why stop there ?

My reasons? Even if the crow is indeed very classy and matches well with Crowley, the Magpie does too. A specie said to be intelligent and altruistic, a signature chattering that is easily worth Crowley’s sniggering, and some touches of white in its plumage which furiously remind me of our demon’s not so dark alignment…

And then there is this old tale about how the magpies like to steal everything that shines. Between Crowley’s often showy getups and the fact that he did climbed the bloody Eden’s wall to capture the attention of the most luminous of all the angels, I don’t really know what more to say :-p
