TMayNT Day 16: Favorite Episode
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 16 of @tmaynt -- just some quick pen sketches for today!
It's so difficult to choose a favorite episode... but this scene in "Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man" is one of my favorite moments, for sure! Everything from the expressions, to the voice acting, to the dialogue was just perfection. This was such a needed moment between Donnie and Splinter, and I love it so much!

Insane in the Mama Train: With the Dark Armor nearly complete, the turtles realize that it's time for them to get serious and to fully embrace their ninja heritage. They then put their new training to the test when April is in trouble on Big Mama's shipping train.
Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of the Rat Man: When Splinter offers to enter a car fair with the Turtle Tank, Donnie and Mikey enthusiastically agree to this chance to bond with their father. Little do the two know, Splinter entered them into a demolition derby to reclaim his glory.

Rise Ramblings #323
...You know what scene lives rent free in my head?
The opening of "Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man."
Do you know why?
In Splinter's dream, roses are bouncing off of his face. Come to find out, his bad behind kids are throwing Fruit Loops at his snout in hopes of getting one into his mouth.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Do you think Leo was just scapegoating Donnie, or do you think that Donnie really made the winning shot?
...I think Donnie might have made that shot.
And here's why.
Naw, just kidding. That was Leo all day with his misbehaving self.
I love this family!
❤️🧡💙💜🤎

Something that I think is kind of interesting is what Rise did with the traditional Leo & Splinter dynamic, throughout the different iterations of TMNT Leo is usually the one to take after Splinter the most & the same is true in Rise as well.
Tumblr media
Leo: Relax. We’ll do what we always do. Ninja in, ninja their faces, ninja out.
Tumblr media
Splinter: Once the hounds sniff out the boys, I ninja them out!
It’s been shown that Leo can often have a similar style of both talking & thinking as Splinter has as in the movie Leo was also shown to say similar phrases to things that Splinter had said in the show, Leo’s original plan to save Raph being to ‘ninja in, ninja out’ is also similar to Splinter’s plan to save the Turtles in the episode End Game.
Tumblr media
Leo: Sorry, I missed that. Can you repeat everything from... well, everything?
Tumblr media
Grandpa Sho: Yoshi! You never listen to me
Splinter: What was that? I wasn’t listening
It has also been shown that Leo has some of the same avoidance tactics as Splinter as in the movie Leo expresses a similar actions when he is trying to avoid talking to Raph about being the leader of the team that a young human Splinter expressed when he was trying to avoid his destiny as a Hamato to spend his life protecting the world from the Shredder.
It is also possible that Splinter also might have trained primarily with a sword when he was younger as we see a sword in a young Splinter’s bedroom similar to how we sometimes see swords whenever we are shown Leo’s bedroom.
Tumblr media
There have also been a few people who have pointed out that Splinter had a similar pose in the episode Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man when throwing Donnie as the future version of Leo did when throwing Casey Junior through the time gateway.
Tumblr media
Future Leo: Casey, when you’re done saving the world, do me a favour. Grab a slice!
Tumblr media
Splinter: Bring home the win boys
Members of the Rise team have also said that putting Leo in a Lou Jitsu outfit in the episode Many Unhappy Returns was also partly meant to be symbolic on how Leo is the Turtle most like a younger Splinter
Tumblr media
However though Splinter & Leo share a lot of similarities unlike most iterations of TMNT where those similarities make Leo arguably the Turtle closest with Splinter, in Rise those similarities actually cause Leo & Splinter to clash with one another.
Tumblr media
Leo: What do you even know about training anyway? You’re just a rat
Tumblr media
Leo: Trust me
Splinter: I do not!
Tumblr media
Leo: No! I’m not going back to whats-his-rat
Tumblr media
Splinter: Oh why did I ever trust you to handle this? My other sons would’ve taken this seriously!
There are a few times in Rise where Leo & Splinter clash where Splinter seems to not like Leo’s attitude or Leo seems resentful of Splinter however even though the two clash there is still a lot of love between them both.
Tumblr media
Leo: Dad was right, and we were so mean to him
Tumblr media
Leo: Locked in a cage, failed in our mission, held for ransom by the Foot, and none of us gave him grandchildren! Somehow I think he wanted more
Leo is shown to regret whenever he lashes out at Splinter & seems kind of visibly upset at the prospect of disappointing him
Tumblr media
Splinter: Where is Leo? And, uh, Future Boy?
Tumblr media
While Splinter has shown concern over Leo’s safety & has literally fallen to his knees in grief at the prospect of loosing Leo.
Splinter & Leo both love each other in Rise but I think it is kind of interesting where Rise has taken what previously made Splinter & Leo so close in other iterations & instead caused them to clash instead

Donnie believes ghosts and bonus gets a rise out of leo :D
The turtle-dega nights is what i shall use as evidence lol
Quote from wiki
Donnie: [pulls Mikey away] Okay, play it cool. He might be possessed.
Mikey: You're right. I always fall for this
(Also forgot who but but someone mentioned donnie and mikey would have ghost adventures and thought that is sooo cute)

......turtle-dega nights is so powerful, because so far in the series donnie was treated pretty much as this sarcastic comic relief and it's the first time we see him so emotional, and about splinter no less, which marks the starting point of splinter actually reconsidering his actions and paying more attention to his turtle children and attempting to make them feel more appreciated which in turn-

I do think after the movie Leo would reflect on his behavior of kind of always lashing out when he gets criticized or w/e and turn into like a slightly gentler version of that (something something leaders should know when to listen to people and when to go lmao no get this fucker out of here) but those are like the ONLY times I can see him actually considering pleasing people and even then he wouldn’t become a complete doormat about it, bro absolutely knows when to put his foot down about things
honestly i feel like people who make leo shut down and close himself off post-movie kinda lost the plot LOL i wish they kept that deleted scene with him and raph and talking about leadership properly in, because its a very nice resolution to their arc and would line it out a little better
really i think the point was that he's becoming more open and softening instead of hiding behind his usual coping mechanisms, because he had to look past himself and realize they really WERE hurting the people around him and putting his brothers in danger. his desire to prove himself had a blast radius. he really does take after his dad like that [gestures at turtle dega nights]
and i think there's still ways to incorporate how fucked up that all was without denying the positive impact it had on leo's arc like,, grappling with almost losing him is of COURSE going to mess them up. in retrospect i think they'd KNOW he had to, and that it was the right thing to do, but that's what hurts about it. i always just love playing around with the question "how do you blame someone for doing something like this to themselves when there was no other way?"
i could really just never see leo as a doormat unless you break him baddddddd. which i suppose is possible LOL you go guys!! idk i dont read most leo-centric stuff (especially not things where donnie's the one unpacking his issues because i always feel like it sacrifices so much about him), i tried out a lot of it early on and didnt enjoy myself and then just didnt rlly go back

ok, i'm elaborating. it's one of my favorite episodes. i love that the conversation where donnie confronts splinter isn't played for laughs- his hurt is genuine, and it's treated with respect. it's also a great portrayal of an honest conversation between a child and a parent who's open to change, even if they've been emotionally neglectful in the past. i've had many conversations with my own parents that have mirrored this one, and it's really true-to-life.
with that being said... there are so many implications in this episode that are just gut-wrenching. mikey reacting in complete astonishment when splinter says donatello instead of purple, the fact that donnie says the last time he spent any time with splinter was 278 days ago (and the incidence in question was splinter calling another brother his name), and the joke about splinter not ever saying he's proud of them all point to him just being emotionally completely absent. he's there with them every day, but he's not really there with them.
a caveat that personally, i think splinter is doing his best and he improves significantly over the course of the series. this opinion comes from my own life experience, so grain of salt, but: i tend to think that parents deserve a little bit of patience, as long as they're genuinely making an effort, and splinter definitely is. he doesn't hesitate to apologize in this ep when he realizes something is wrong, but i do think his emotional unavailability has taken a permanent toll. you never get those childhood years back. once you know you aren't being heard, that's something that can't really be fixed as an adult.
a lot of fics take this emotional absence and fill in raph. i don't disagree with that- we see raph filling a more parental role both in his protectiveness of his brothers and in his consistent worry about them- but actually, i think the one who's filing in the most is mikey. mikey cooks for the family (ref: leo mentioning brussels sprouts in the ancient art of ninja hide and seek). he also is the one to notice toxic familial patterns and correct them, as in the case where he's helping donnie understand why shelldon is upset. he has an entire persona constructed around helping his family process their emotions, and another that makes difficult decisions for them and handles direct confrontation. he is also, in turtle-dega nights, the only one to keep the safety of all three people in the forefront of his mind.
this isn't to say that mikey is mature; he's the youngest, and in many ways, he's still a kid. but in the ways that count? he's doing the adult's job of teaching both his brothers and his father social-emotional skills. he's providing consistent and healthy meals. he can put aside his feelings when it matters- a skill that donnie and splinter are both lacking- and, most importantly, he can and will return to his feelings later.
the show plays mikey for laughs a lot, in the tradition of tmnt's mikey being the comedic relief, but under that veneer is a kid who's lacking a crucial part of his childhood. I wish we got to see more of that dynamic.
turtle-dega nights is just. so heartbreaking.

The only other time I've ever been this shocked about a character saying another character's name was when Mr. D said Percy's name correctly for the very first time.
