The best movie of all time in my opinion, this build was so exciting and reminded me of when I first saw Jurassic Park, and then became obsessed with Jurassic Park and dinosaurs! Featuring the original cast, and a cute Velociraptor, you can play along to the movie or imagine what it would be like to have these beautifully terrifying beasts in our lives again (I'd love it!). More Lamps, More Problems

Life’s latest lesson for me is one of patience. Although, who am I kidding.  That’s been my lesson for a long time now.  One who likes to problem solve, one who craves control, one who desires security, I panic easily and begin to troubleshoot a problem that doesn’t actually exist.

A couple of weeks ago, it appeared as if two of my public speaking classes may not happen due to low enrollment.  My heart pounded and my mind raced.  I’d barely paid bills in January, with the anticipation of my paychecks starting again in February.  If those didn’t come, how was I going to survive?  Furthermore, I’d committed to teaching additional classes at other colleges, starting later.  So, it wasn’t as simple as getting another job-because that job might interfere with those commitments.

Within hours I’d convinced myself abandoning all my part-time jobs was the solution, leaving me with no choice but to get a full-time job I’d dread.  I called friends, emailed anyone who might have a lead, sent out my resume to numerous jobs.  Everything handed to me, when looked into, seemed like a dead-end.  They were much needed and great ideas but something was always just out of reach.  A missing qualification, hours that I couldn’t meet, slightly over or underqualified.  I even went into a small gift shop around the corner that had a “help wanted” sign up.  The owner was there, we had a great conversation, and she said to email her, which I promptly did when I got home.  But I heard nothing.  I even called a week later, was told by the co-owner that they still needed someone and he’d be sure to have his partner call me the next day.  Nothing.

As usual, I was out frantically running around trying to solve the potential problem I’d assumed was about to drop into my lap.  Stressed and exhausted, God blessed me with the worst case of the flu.  This knocked me out so hard for about 72 hours I couldn’t do anything but sleep.  Even the week following, my body was still recovering to the point I’d sleep whenever a free moment arose.  It was as if God had to literally stop me from taking action.

When my heat bill came, reporting over $200 accrued, I wanted to cry.  Maybe I did –but was too exhausted to notice.  I threw on five layers of clothes, did the same to Sophie, and turned the heat down to 65.  We froze and huddled close together.  We started finding our walks outside in the bitter cold enjoyable because they meant that when we came back inside it would actually feel warm…for amount fifteen minutes.

When feeling down and defeated, I find environment can change a lot.  We cleaned the apartment, lit candles and tart warmers.  We turned off the bright overhead lighting and turned on the warm welcoming glow of small lamps.  We played soft music and read books.  And we got colder.  Much, much colder.

It was as if Satan was there saying, “you can’t beat me.  I’ll bring you down.”  We huddled closer, put on more clothes, turned on more lamps, and played the music louder.  I was not going to be defeated.  Did I see myself at 35, freezing with my poodle, unable to pay bills and not being able to get solid work?  No.  I, like most people, followed the “path” that guaranteed bliss and success.  I got straight A’s, got a M.A., married the nice boy, was the responsible employee. It was all supposed to be perfect. Only it wasn’t.  Not at all.  But this was my life, no one else’s.  It was delivered to me for a reason and I was not going to give up.  

When a friend came to help with some tasks I couldn’t quite do on my own, he commented on how unbelievably cold it was. I told him about the bill and he walked around and covered any spots cold air may be leaking in, confident that would make a difference.  We sat visiting for another hour without any change in the temperature.  Just as he was leaving, something caught his eye. He walked over to the thermostat and turned off the lamp directly under it.  The heat kicked on.

You see, in my efforts to combat my own insecurities with ambiance, I’d actually created more problems.  The inviting glow of the lamp was creating a pocket of heat right under the thermostat, telling it that it was about five degrees warmer in the house than it actually was and preventing the heat from kicking on.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still cold in the house…but it’s tolerable.  My body is rid of the flu but still aches at times…though, again, tolerable.  My classes ended up reaching the needed numbers and while I still struggle to pay bills…it’s tolerable. I’m at a point in my life, perhaps you are too, where life is far from perfect.  Many days it’s not even good.  But it’s tolerable.  If you watch the news for more than a few minutes, you’ll quickly realize that tolerable is a whole lot to be thankful for.  So, keep your chin up and keep pushing forward.  After all, this too shall pass.
