Warnings: Fluff and swearing
Length: 3200 words
Pairing: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Female single!mom Reader
Check my masterlist for more Top Gun fun! Batting Practice masterlist.
As Bradley pulled into the lot at Petco Park, he flashed a VIP parking pass at the guard. You still weren't sure why you needed to get to the game so early, but honestly, you didn't mind spending some extra time around Bradley today. He made Everett happy, and you were really considering giving him a second chance. Because he made you happy, too.
Bradley and Everett were singing a song about the Phillie Phanatic, and now you were singing along too. He held your hand tight while he parked the Bronco next to the ballpark, and when he grinned and pulled you out through his door with him, you couldn't help but smile.
"I'm so happy you came," he whispered, looking down at you with a crooked smile that had your heart melting. "I planned a lot of stuff to surprise Ev, but if you and he aren't having fun, then we can always just get some food or leave early."
You shook your head at him, amazed that he didn't get it yet. "There's nothing that kid wants more than to spend the day with you, watching the Phillies."
"That's what I want, too," he replied, opening the back door and lifting Everett down. "Ready, kiddo? I have something cool to show you."
You walked a few steps behind them as they made their way to the turnstile hand in hand. "What's faster, a slider or a changeup? And how does the catcher know when to get the pitcher to throw a curveball?" Everett rambled. They looked adorable in their matching backwards caps.
"They practice together a lot. Just the two of them. And they get really good at knowing how to communicate."
"That's cool. I wanna be a pitcher and a power hitter."
"Kid, if you can manage to combine those two, you'll hit the majors for sure," Bradley told him, glancing over his shoulder to make sure you were there. With a smile, he handed three tickets to the guy in the booth, and next thing you knew, you were all being ushered through an underground tunnel.
"Where are we going exactly?" you asked Bradley, losing the battle to slip your hand into his free one. The three of you were being led down a long ramp by a tour guide named John who had given each of you VIP badges to wear.
"On a locker room tour," he replied, and then Everett really got excited.
"I get to go in the locker room?" he asked, skipping ahead and making John chuckle.
"I told them you wanted to see the visitors' locker room," Bradley told Everett. "Maybe some of the Phillies uniforms will be hanging up."
And they were. You stood in the middle of the visitor's suite that looked more like a luxury hotel than a men's locker room while Everett ran around with your phone taking pictures. "Mom! Take a picture of us in front of the bats!"
You snapped a few photos of Bradley and Everett standing near the equipment, and then you tucked your phone away. "This is so cool," you whispered to Bradley while the tour guide showed Everett the snack bar that was reserved for the players. "Thank you."
Bradley sighed. "Jake hooked it up. He begged the groundskeeper. I think he felt bad for what he said to you at the bar."
You nodded and met his eyes. "He told me he likes moms." You watched his eyes narrow just a fraction as he licked his lips.
"Yeah, well I love moms, actually. I was just overcompensating for my insecurities before. You and Ev are intimidating."
You scoffed. "Intimidating?"
Bradley nodded, his brown eyes sincere. "I told you, Kitten, you two are perfect. And I got in my own head."
"I'm eating the snacks that the players eat!" Everett announced, holding up a bag of peanuts. The tour guide let him take a few as he led all three of you into one of the press boxes.
Your hand ended up in Bradley's and he kept pulling you closer, but once he saw who was in the press box, his grip on your hand tightened until it was almost painful.
"Ev, you asked who the starting pitchers were?" Bradley said in awe. "Well, here they are."
"Hey, are you Everett?" asked the Phillies starting pitcher, and you were afraid your son and Bradley were both going to faint.
"Yeah?" your son asked, and John led him closer to the table where two men were sitting.
"Wait, are you really a Phillies fan? I heard you're from San Diego!" said the Padres pitcher with a laugh.
"I like you, too!" Everett said hurriedly. "The Padres are my second favorite team, I swear!" You laughed and both pitchers smiled at you.
"How about we both sign a shirt for you?" asked the Phillies pitcher. "I don't think anyone else has a shirt signed by rival pitchers."
"Holy shit," Bradley muttered as he watched them each sign an MLB all-stars shirt and hand it to Everett.
"Why don't you get in there with him for a photo, Coach?" you asked. Bradley let go of your hand so fast to scramble behind the table with Everett, and you snapped a few pictures of the four of them. Then the pitchers stood and shook hands with Bradley, and it amazed you to see that he was built exactly like the professionals were. Tall, broad and strong.
"Have fun with your parents, Everett," the Padres pitcher told him, knocking his Phillies cap crooked and smiling. "Enjoy the game."
"We will!" Everett and Bradley said in unison, and you stood frozen in place. Maybe they had been too excited to process the word parents, but you'd heard it loud and clear.
They both looked dazed as John led them back through the tunnel. "Are you both okay?" you asked with a laugh as Bradley's hand found yours again.
"That was awesome," Bradley said, tossing Ev's new shirt over his shoulder as they emptied out of the tunnel and onto the ballfield. It was a perfect, clear day, and you heard John tell Everett he could run around anywhere except on the outfield. You watched your son take off like a rocket and run around the bases while you cheered for him. He looked so small out on a real infield.
"Oh, fuck it," Bradley said, and he took off running the bases too while you laughed and cheerer for both of them. Bradley caught up to Everett near home plate where you were standing, and after they both crossed the bag, he scooped Everett up into his arms.
They were both out of breath as Bradley said, "You'll have to get used to running that far if you're a power hitter."
"I can do it," Everett told him, and they had gigantic, matching smiles on their faces.
You snapped a few more photos, and then John asked, "Want to throw some pitches?" He handed Bradley a few pristine baseballs, and he and Everett took off toward the pitcher's mound. You stood off to the side as Bradley got Everett set up and in position with one of the balls. Then your son threw a pitch that didn't quite have enough force behind it to make it all the way to home plate, but it was thrown so accurately, you watched it roll to where the batters normally stood.
"Wow! Great job, Ev! Very accurate!" you shouted, thoroughly impressed. He threw a second pitch, and it was just as good as the first one. Then you watched Bradley trade places with him and wind up to throw what you thought was a slider. It sailed beautifully past home plate and bounced off the advertisement signs. He threw a second one that looked like a fastball.
"Hey! You're good!" said John as Bradley and Everett ran from the mound to home plate. "Did you play?"
"Just in college," Bradley replied, collecting the balls so John didn't have to. "A long time ago."
"He's a tee ball coach!" Everett announced. "He coaches my team!"
You didn't know if you could remember a time Everett looked this happy, and you felt like you were going to cry. This wasn't a one off. You needed this kind of day to happen again. Maybe not on the grand scale of gallivanting around Petco Park like VIPs, but you needed more days in the park getting ice cream. You needed more pizza nights. You need to have Bradley touching you at the batting cages and making love in his Bronco.
"Come here, Kitten," he called, waving you over. "I want a picture of the three of us on home plate."
You closed the distance to them, and Bradley tucked you against his side with Everett in front of both of you. John took some pictures with Bradley's phone, and you let your head rest on his shoulder. "Thank you for doing this," you whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "He's in heaven."
"So am I," Bradley replied softly before kissing your lips. "I didn't do anything though. All I did was mess up, Kitten." He was being sincere, and you knew it. You thought you'd have to be an idiot to not forgive him. When John handed his phone back to him, you wrapped your arms around Bradley's waist.
"Cute family photos," John remarked, and Everett turned to see you in Bradley's arms.
"Thanks," Bradley replied as he rubbed your back. "Hey, Ev, why don't you run the bases one last time, kiddo?"
"I'll time you," John told him, setting the stopwatch on his phone and telling Ev when to start.
You looked up at Bradley and whispered, "I forgive you." He squeezed you tighter and let out a deep sigh of relief that made you smile. "And not just because today is perfect, but also because Everett and I are both attached to you, so you better not mess this up."
His lips were on yours in the sweetest kiss that had you reaching for more as he pulled away. He kissed you a little harder and whispered, "I'll be so good to you. Both of you," against your lips. You knew he was telling the truth.
------------------------------
Bradley was trying to stay calm, but it was nearly impossible. You were sitting two seats away from him, eating some nachos and smiling at Everett. Whenever your eyes met his, Bradley sighed in relief. He would ask you to be his girlfriend later tonight after the game. He was completely ready for that. Ready to be around for you and Everett.
"Thanks, Bradley," Ev told him, and Bradley managed to get a napkin under Everett's hot dog before it could drip ketchup on his jersey. "This is probably the best day I've ever had."
It was only the bottom of the first inning, but the Phillies were already leading by one run. The day had been perfect up to this point, but Bradley desperately wanted them to win for Everett. "Probably the best day I've ever had, too, kiddo."
The smile that touched your lips before you bit into a chip had Bradley grinning too. And as the innings wore on and the sun started to set, the stadium lights glowed to life. Everett was sitting on the edge of the seat when the Padres had the bases loaded, and it was all up to the pitcher that had autographed his shirt to save it for the Phillies. Without a word, Everett scrambled onto Bradley's lap to get a better view, and they both held their breath as the pitch count reached three balls and two strikes.
"Come on," Bradley muttered, wrapping his arm around Everett's middle. When the pitcher struck out the batter, Bradley jumped to his feet with Everett, and they cheered with the few other Phillies fans sitting in the section. "Still have the lead!"
You were sitting in Everett's vacant seat when Bradley settled down with Ev on his lap again, and he wrapped his arm around your shoulders. "You boys having fun?" you asked.
"Yep!" Everett said, clapping as the Phillies shortstop walked up to bat.
Bradley leaned in and kissed your cheek, his mustache tickling your ear. "We should do this all the time. At least until he gets to see every team play the Padres."
"And what if he decides he likes a different team better than the Phillies after he sees them all?" you asked, and Bradley scoffed.
"Do we look like fair weather fans?" he asked, gesturing to himself and Everett. "No. That's not going to happen, Kitten."
You laughed and leaned in to kiss him. "You're right. What was I thinking?"
"If the Phillies make it to the playoffs, we'll go to Philadelphia and watch them play and eat cheesesteaks and meet the Phanatic in person," he told you with conviction.
"Yeah, mom," Everett agreed, never taking his eyes off the game. "Because the Phanatic only goes to home games."
"Yeah, Kitten," Bradley echoed. "The Phanatic only goes to home games."
"You're both ridiculous," you said, but your smile was wide as you let your head rest on his shoulder.
---------------------------
You felt a tinge of disappointment as the Padres managed to tie the game in the eight inning. Everett was squirming a bit on Bradley's lap in anticipation, and Bradley had his fingers laced with yours.
"Do you want to switch laps, Ev?" you asked, and both Bradley and Everett replied with a firm No.
But Everett hopped off of Bradley's lap when the inning ended, and it didn't escape your attention that his gaze settled on your joined hands on the armrest. "I'll only be a little bit sad if the Phillies lose, okay? Because I'm having a lot of fun." Then he climbed back on Bradley's lap as you chuckled.
"Me too, kiddo, but wouldn't it be great if the Phillies hit a homerun to win the game?" he asked, straightening out Everett's cap.
"That would be so cool," Everett agreed as a new batter came up to the plate for the Phillies.
You pulled Bradley closer, and he gave you his undivided attention. You kissed his lips softly and said, "I think you're right. I want to do this all the time, too." Bradley's lips curled into a smile as he nodded, so you continued with a smile of your own. "The Padres play the Pirates here on Ev's birthday next month. So maybe we can do this again? I know it would be a late game, since it's during the week, but we could see if Molly and Bob want to come too. It could be really fun. What do you think?"
Bradley let go of your hand and wrapped his warm fingers around your neck, pulling you closer until your hand found his cheek while he kissed you. You moaned softly against his lips, you'd missed him this way so much. Then his nose bumped yours as he released your lips but kept you close to him. "Kitten, I think I love you."
"Look!" Everett shouted, and both you and Bradley turned to see what was going on. The echo of the solidly hit ball was still in the air as Bradley dumped Everett onto your lap and stood. You managed to stumble to your feet with Everett as Bradley jumped and caught the Phillies home run ball with his bare hand while the player rounded the bases to the sound of everyone in your section cheering. Then you watched as Bradley toppled over the armrest and into the aisle with a look of elation mixed with terror on his face.
"He caught it!" Everett cheered, launching himself onto Bradley who was trying to sit up awkwardly on the stairs. But he smiled and hugged Everett, handing him the ball while he clenched and unclenched his hand.
"Are you okay?" you asked, laughing as Bradley stood with Everett hanging onto him.
"Yeah, Kitten," he grunted, kissing your lips while everyone cheered. "Just gonna be a little sore. Damn, my hand hurts," he said, shaking it out again. The three of you were being featured on the big screen as they showed a replay of Bradley jumping up over and over again.
"Dad of the year!" the guy across the aisle shouted to Bradley, and you couldn't stop smiling.
"Thanks, man," Bradley replied with a laugh as he sat down. Everett had Bradley in a headlock as he examined his souvenir baseball with wide eyes.
"Wow," Everett said over and over again. "You're good at catching too, Coach."
"I'll teach you everything I know, kiddo."
"That was insane," you whispered, and Bradley laughed.
"I had to catch it. That was a once in a lifetime ball."
Everett was distracted by the end of the game as you leaned in close and pressed your lips to Bradley's. "I think I love you too, Coach."
------------------------
Bradley hadn't stopped touching you for a single moment. He was a little sore from landing on his ass in the aisle, but he honestly couldn't remember a better day in recent memory. When the game ended in a victory for the Phillies, Everett hugged him tight, but Bradley kept his hand wrapped around yours.
When Everett scrambled onto your lap for a hug, you asked him, "Do you want to come back for your birthday? We haven't seen the Pirates play yet."
"Yeah!" Everett cheered, clearly running on a Phillies high. But by the time the three of you were exiting the ballpark, Bradley scopped Everett up and carried him. All of the excitement of the day seemed to have the kid running on empty all of a sudden. When the three of you finally empied out into the parking lot with the rest of the crowd, Everett was mostly asleep in his arms.
"He's wiped out," Bradley told you with a laugh. You had your hand wrapped around his waist, your fingers rubbing his side, and Bradley couldn't stop grinning.
"All the excitement caught up to him." You took the keys from Bradley's pocket and went ahead to unlock the Bronco and open the back door. Bradley carefully deposited Everett into the booster seat and buckled him in as his eyes opened briefly.
"I'm tired," Everett mumbled, and Bradley laughed as he kissed his forehead. "I know, kiddo. Love you." Then he closed the door and you were reaching for him in the shadows of the parking lot, pressing your body to his and kissing him just like he had become accustomed to. He had missed you so much.
He pushed you up against the back door of the Bronco, and you gasped as he sucked on your neck. Your body felt warm against the chill of the night air, and Bradley's hands found their way up inside your shirt. "Kitten," he moaned below your ear. You had one hand wrapped around his neck, and the other was pressing against the fly of his jeans. You could make him go insane. "Kitten, baby, I can't get enough of you."
"Take us home," you demanded. "And stay with me."
"God, yes," he agreed, and then you were climbing in the driver's door and crawling across the seat.

from this WIP weekend post!!
you guys overwhelmingly voted for more of the rockstar!eddie x sailor!steve full fic(let)/oneshot so here are the 42(!!!) sentences i ended up writing for it! (and seriously, thank you @thisapplepielife for tagging me!! this is the most i've gotten done on a lot of these wips in a while!)
“Was hard enough driving it around these skinny-ass roads.” Eddie snorts as that, “Don’t think I didn’t feel the scrape you gave that Beetle back there, Earl.” “It’s not my fault! These roads are tiny and there’s people parked everywhere!” “I’m just fuckin’ with you, man,” Eddie chuckles, shuffling out after the other boys, “Don’t fall in.”
They head toward the little gatehouse at the front of the pier where their manager, Chrissy, is standing beside a sailor in the Navy’s digital blue camo uniform. The girl in uniform looks particularly baby-faced (given she must be at least old enough to enlist), and the bright white “U.S. NAVY” stamped across the front of her bulletproof vest matches Chrissy’s pantsuit. It makes Eddie sweat just looking at her, even with how pleasant the weather actually is.
“You not coming with us, Chris?” Gareth asks. “Nah, I’m going to sit and wait in the car, I have quite a few calls to make anyhow.” she waves him off, “Maybe I can convince Earl to take me up to the food court. I could really go for some ice cream.” She waves them off, shooing them towards the sailor waiting on them, and marches off back across the narrow road to their car. “Okay, listen up.” Erica calls out to the four of them, pulling their attention to her easily. “I am going to escort you down the pier and you will both stay out of others’ way, and watch your step.” She beckons them through the tall turnstile gate as she speaks, following close behind. “There shouldn’t be anything laying out on the deck, as a rule, but watch it regardless.” As promised, she escorts them down the flat concrete pier, herding them with short warnings as they go, for whatever hazard may be in their way. Despite the watching where he’s going he should be doing, Eddie can’t help but gawk up at the huge ships on either side of the wide spanse of concrete. They tower protectively over the sailors throwing heavy ropes around like they’re nothing, the ones helping unload cargo vans of their equipment, and those that seem to just be having fun laughing and fucking around. The ship on their left (with the matching hull number as on Erica’s ballcap) is onloading supplies from the pier in systematic line over the deceptively narrow strip of water between it and the vessel, each of the wildly different people in the line swinging box after box between them up the steep steel ramp and out of sight onto the deck. The ship on their right is only two numbers above the Berthold, and is the one they will be touring. The USS William B. Franke (DDG-63). There’s less happening on it's side of the pier, only a few folks coming and going. There’s a small group of four standing at the bottom of the Franke's ramp, a pair in street clothes that look to be heading off for the day, and there’s a taller sailor with a long ponytail who’s just hefted a heavy-looking piece of equipment onto their shoulder and is climbing across the bridge to the ship.
They troop along behind the commander, following him up and around a couple bends in the halls to his office. “Come on in, gentlemen; have a seat, please.” Brenner gestures them inside past a wooden desk to a low L-shaped couch fixated in the far corner of the office. They plop down onto the squeaky brown pleather, Chief Bonne taking up another chair in a corner, Master Chief Williams sinks down into the seat at the end of the couch, and the captain wheels his desk chair to the other side of the small round coffee table, sitting opposite the group. MAC Hopper stands against the door, out of the way. “Apologies, gentlemen," Brenner begins, "My Executive Officer is out of country at the moment, so he’s unable to meet with you today, but he’ll be back by time we get underway again.” “Of course, no worries here, sir.” Jeff waves him off, unnecessarily, “When are you setting sail?” “We’ll be taking off in a week.” “Only about half our sailors’ families are coming along,” Master Chief cuts in, “So we’ll have the room for you all to stay aboard while we’re underway, but you’ll have to have a skeleton crew to film.” The wheels in Eddie’s head are already turning, “How skeleton are we talking?”
“Oh, of course.” He says, visibly relieved, “Let me track down Lieutenant Creel; He’s a great kid, been a friend of the family since he was in diapers.” Eddie’s already shaking his head. "No sir, I said your most competent." The captain's smile turns sour, so Eddie continues. "Someone point me to THE second class. You know the one, does it a little bit of everything, doesn’t slow down, probably salty as hell… Where are they? I need an enlisted person…No offense to your Lieutenant, sir.”
you also voted a handful or more for each other idea so i will link below each of the other posts for each other set of votes/sentences of the other options below!

I dunno if you’re still doing requests, so feel free to pass! But I started reading your whole page and I’m a little bit in love with your characterization of 2k12 Leo, and I was wondering if you might write something about his dynamic with April? to be clear I do not mean shipping! I just think they’re interesting friends and it’s hard to find fics that do her justice without mary sue-ing her, and I liked seeing them interact in the show. Anyway have a good day!
this is set in 2012—but the turtles are all different ages, like they are in rottmnt, because i love it <3

The lair is silent when April lets herself in. The TV in the den is on, down low, but Casey is the only one in there and he’s not even watching it. He’s sitting on the outer lip of the pit, his feet in one of the seats, knee bouncing anxiously.
“Hey,” she calls over, unnecessarily. She thinks she’s had his attention since before she hopped the turnstiles. Running with a ninja clan has done wonders for Casey’s sense of awareness, and April’s, too. Still, she waits for him to look at her before she lifts the bags in her hands and says, “I got the food. Can you get the guys?”
“You think they’re really gonna eat?” Casey asks. There are shadows under his eyes.
“They will when I accidentally let them see the receipt,” April says, lifting her chin and refusing to feel guilty about the underhanded play. “Five Guys isn’t cheap. They owe it to me.”
Casey blinks, and then a smile creeps across his face. It looks like it doesn’t know what it’s doing there. “Nice. Divide and conquer? It’ll take me like three business days to extract Don from the lab, but Raph’ll be easy if I lie and tell him we’re going topside to beat down some Dragons.”
“Deal,” April says, bumping elbows with him as they pass each other.
The kitchen is dark, and there’s a thin layer of dust over the counter and the appliances. It feels wrong to disturb the room, almost like she’s upsetting a shrine—but she squashes that thought down hard and punts it out of her head for good measure. It’s not a memorial to anybody. It’s just a room they’re not really using right now.
He would want them to eat, April tells herself. The thought lends her courage, because she knows it’s the truth. So she sets the bags down, takes a deep breath, and moves down the hall to collect Leonardo.
She can hear the steady beeping of the EKG machine before she pushes open the bedroom door. Leo’s cool blue eyes meet hers from his vigil at the side of the bed, and he manages to scrape together a smile for her.
“Hi,” he says at length.
“Hi, Bossman,” she replies warmly, stepping inside.
They moved Mikey into his room so that he’d be more comfortable. Donnie spent a full day getting the equipment set up just right—a blank, mechanic way about him as he arranged the pillows and stuffed toys and blankets until he was satisfied.
It went unsaid that Mikey might be sleeping for a long while. He hit his head hard during that fight a week ago. He woke up once, very briefly, on the way home, but he wasn’t lucid enough to answer any of his siblings’ frantic questions. His muddy blue eyes skated across their faces, lingering as long as they could, and then closed again.
His brain activity is strong, his vitals are stable, he just isn’t waking up.
And poor Leo takes every instance of his brothers’ hurt so personally, but there’s something especially brutal about it when it’s Mikey. The baby. Fourteen years old, next to Leo’s crowning eighteen. Of course it’s hard. Raph and Donnie are miserable, too.
But the weight of Leo’s imagined failures press him down and down and down until April can’t remember what he looks like with his head held high. He really hates himself for it, every time.
He’s the leader. He’s the oldest. It’s his responsibility to look after the rest of them, and when he can’t—when he fails—it takes a little more from him each time. It chips away at that shining boy he used to be. April is worried, constantly, of what will happen when there’s no more for him to give.
She sits down next to him and puts her head on his shoulder. She hears his breathing hitch, but otherwise he doesn’t react. At times like these, she misses Splinter so badly it’s a real, physical ache in her chest. His kindness and wisdom is so sorely needed. His children hadn’t had a chance to outgrow him before he was ripped away—not even his eldest.
“Dinnertime,” April says, her voice a gentle, unyielding thing in the warmly-lit room.
“I’m not hungry,” Leo replies by rote. “Thank you, though.”
“I wasn’t asking, kiddo,” April says. This draws him up short. He turns to look at her so quickly that he dislodges her head from his shoulder. She doesn’t take it back, though; if anything, she digs her heels in.
She’s picking up a heavy mantle, but she can’t bear the thought of leaving it for someone else to find. Or worse, the thought of no one else coming along, and Leo continuing on the way he always has—carrying it alone.
She thought about it on the way over. She should’ve made this official much sooner.
“I’m not a kid,” Leo says slowly, more bewildered than anything.
“You’ll always be a kid to me.” April folds her arms in all her nineteen-year-old glory, officially the oldest teenager in the room. “And as your big sister, it’s my job to bully you into that kitchen and feed you an overpriced burger. We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Here’s a spoiler—the hard way is getting your big brother involved. And Casey’s version of asking politely is dragging you the whole way kicking and screaming. So what’ll it be?”
Leo’s eyes are wide and moonlike. He has no idea how to make sense of what he’s hearing. He’s never once been little-brothered by anybody. He hasn’t been the one taken care of since Splinter died.
He doesn’t seem to hate the idea.
But his eyes stray back to the bed like an act of gravity. “I don’t want to leave him,” Leo says quietly. “What if he wakes up by himself?”
“He won’t, dummy. ‘Cause I’ll be here,” April tells him. Of course she’ll be here. This is where her family lives.
And the whole family is home when Mikey finally wakes up a few days later. Raph’s hoarse voice shouts down the hall, and the rest of them sprint with ninja-grade intensity all the way to Mikey’s room, jostling each other at the door. Mikey looks groggy and disgruntled, and stretches his limbs out like he’s waking up from a halfway decent nap, but he smiles automatically when he sees his siblings. And just like that, the sun comes out.
Leo plants himself on the edge of the bed, and it would clearly take an act of god to move him. Donnie visibly resigns himself to working around him. That frightening, icy look in Donnie’s eyes has finally thawed back into that familiar blend of wicked cleverness and shy sweetness that his family so adores, and he keeps glancing up from the machines to catch Mikey’s eye like they’re telling a whole host of inside jokes in a secret, silent language. Raph and Casey are talking over each other, trying to catch Mikey up on everything he’s missed, more animated now than they’ve been in the last two weeks combined.
Mikey is still tired and not very talkative, but he soaks in all the attention like a little plant soaking up the sun. When April is able to muscle her way in, he beams up at her, and leans in to the kiss she plants on his forehead.
“Hey sis,” he croaks. He’s often a step ahead of the rest of them, but only those times when they least expect it. April has no idea what she’d do without him. “Thanks for keeping an eye on these jokers.”
“Of course, baby,” she says. She looks at Leo and adds, “That’s my job.”
Leo shakes his head, but he’s smiling. He’s holding his head a little bit higher than before. April will take it.

delaying sleep by waxing poetic for a new city
I think there's a good chance I might just have rose-tinted goggles welded onto my face. I have fallen in love with nearly every place I've been this year. new york city was no different.
I'd always thought I wouldn't like NYC. it was too big, too grey, too busy, too dirty for my tastes (or so I'd been told). I'm reminded of something my old best friend from high school (the one I had the one-sided falling out with re: wedding stuff this past year) told me after she and her family visited it years ago: "Oh, you'd hate it."
reader, I did not. I loved it. I loved it so very much.
I am so captivated by place. it's always been that way. it consumes my creative work. the place of a thing is its own character! it makes or breaks a story. it is, in fact, the most important part to me. and new york is so deeply itself, so embodied with its identity and way of life!!!
I was enchanted by how people there are so... it's like they're in parallel play with each other. everyone moving and traveling and going about their days—rarely interacting, ideally never interacting—but nonetheless Doing Life side by side. that's something I miss a lot about being a child and living with my family: going about my day just knowing that the room next over, my sister is going about hers. I really value the intrinsic sense of community and Being A Part Of Something that gives me.
nyc is like that on steroids. everything is happening all the time. move on the sidewalk to avoid the couple walking toward you. keep an eye on the unwell man on your subway car—you'll be fine, but be aware. duck around the gaggle of tourists on the platform and blow through the turnstile. laugh when the cop who's definitely committing entrapment by leaning on the emergency exit door and keeping it open tells you to swipe your metrocard again, it must not have read the first time. weave through the crowd. move with it. take the train with it. live with it.
I have a relative who lives in sunny sunny los angeles, and she messaged me to express her disgust at how dark new york was. my photos had a filter on them, I tried to explain, but she was unmoveable. she'd fallen out of love with nyc a long time ago. their subway was filthy, their streets were dark, and their infrastructure was always a few seconds from flaking out on you.
it's ALIVE, I wanted to say. YES, that's all true, but god, is it lived-in. it's like how any good film props master will have scuffed up all the clothing and equipment in a movie: it's LIVED-IN. it's USED, by all these PEOPLE, and are these PEOPLE not enchanting? in their chic all-black outfits? wearing their full faces of makeup on the subway? bundled in their black puffer coats and studiously ignoring each other as they move through life in chaotic unison?
I don't know. I see her point, and her long-ago adoption of the sunny coast was the right choice for her, but I was just so enamored with everything nyc was. it was so ITSELF, you know? it had a firm identity and a concrete way of life. almost like a confidence. confidence is sexy! it's enchanting.
aside from my newfound love affair, I had so much fun. I was there for like 72 hours and it was awesome how much we packed in. I caught up with an old friend who I haven't talked to in genuinely 8 years (she got SECRET MARRIED and there was a RIFT with her SISTER who I ALSO KNEW and she has settled into her skin SO securely)! I got to see a BROADWAY show! I ate DELICIOUS PIZZA.
I went to Michigan and fell in love with it. I went to Seattle and thought to myself: the life I wanted to have here is probably something I could have, in time. And now I've gone to NYC and realized that I want more than the tiny bite of it I got. I want to be there again, longer, for more. Hell, I might even be able to live there for a part of my life.
I love that about myself: my adaptability. I can take ANYTHING I'm given and make it work. I can be anywhere. I can be anything. I want to be everywhere. I want to be everything.
and baby, new york has everything.
#hot take though: pigeon bagel's egg bagel > the one I had in NYC#SORRY! I STAND BY THAT OPINION THO

I want to take this opportunity to vent:
This is the first administration I've actually called to complain, particularly about the NYPD and their lack of meaningful presence in subways. I frequently see people, especially women and trans folks, being harassed or followed on the platforms or in the trains. Once there was a lady being followed and screamed at by a guy, and of course all the officers are just hanging out by the turnstiles. I informed one of them about the situation and he just looked at me like it wasn't his problem. Mayor Adams claimed that they've increased patrol, and allegedly crime is down, but really they're just there to give tickets for fare evasion.
Most other city agencies are having their budget cut, but not the NYPD. Which BTW has an annual budget of almost 6 Billion dollars, but most of that goes towards military grade equipment and surveillance technologies, which clearly aren't being used to protect people when they need it.
I want to say that the officers themselves are underpaid compared to other districts, but when you see how little they do, it almost feels deserved. Like in the video where the officer calls the trans lady who was being harassed a chicken, while holding onto his bullet-proof vest, with a gun in his holster, and surrounded by other officers with the same equipment.
Originally their excuse was because they got their feelings hurt by DeBlasio when he supported the BLM and said the Police can do better. But now they don't have that excuse. The current mayor is literally an ex cop. No other job can you not do any work and not get fired.
Such BS
Nypd pigs ain't shit as per usual

Enhancing Building Security: A Guide to Concentric Layers in Access Control
In a world where security threats are evolving, ensuring robust protection for buildings has become more complex and necessary than ever. One of the most effective methods for enhancing building security is the implementation of a concentric layers approach in access control systems. This strategy ensures that security measures are progressively layered, creating multiple barriers to prevent unauthorized entry and protect assets.
In this comprehensive guide, we explore how the concept of concentric layers in access control can elevate your building’s security.
1. Understanding the Concentric Layers Approach
The concentric layers approach, also known as a “defense-in-depth” strategy, relies on multiple overlapping security measures to safeguard a building. This method is likened to the rings of a fortress, where each layer adds an additional level of security that must be breached before reaching the core of the protected area.
Each layer serves a unique function in delaying, detecting, and deterring potential intruders, thereby strengthening the overall security framework. This method is particularly advantageous for buildings requiring a high level of security, such as corporate offices, data centers, and research facilities.
2. The Core Components of Access Control Systems
Before delving into how these systems are integrated into concentric layers, it’s essential to understand the primary components of a modern access control system:
Physical Barriers: Doors, gates, turnstiles, and barriers that restrict entry to authorized individuals.
Authentication Mechanisms: Methods such as keycards, biometric scans (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition), and PIN codes.
Monitoring Equipment: CCTV cameras and alarms that provide real-time surveillance and alert security personnel.
Software Platforms: Centralized management systems that enable the remote monitoring and configuration of access points.
These components, when strategically layered, create a multi-faceted approach that bolsters security and minimizes the risk of unauthorized access.
3. Designing the Layers of Security
When planning a concentric access control system, it’s essential to break down the building into different zones and assign security measures to each. Here’s how these layers can be structured:
Layer 1: Perimeter Security
The outermost layer focuses on securing the perimeter of the property. This includes fences, gates with access control systems, and security cameras that provide comprehensive coverage of the area. Motion detectors and sensors can be installed to alert security personnel of any unusual activity at the boundary.
Layer 2: Building Entrances
The next layer involves securing the entrances to the building itself. This is where advanced access control mechanisms like keycard or biometric readers come into play. These systems ensure that only authorized personnel can enter the building, helping to prevent tailgating and other forms of unauthorized access.
Layer 3: Internal Zones
Once inside the building, access should be further restricted to specific areas based on the role and clearance level of the individual. For instance, only IT staff might have access to the server room, while administrative areas are open to general employees. Biometric systems are highly effective at this layer due to their accuracy and reliability.
Layer 4: High-Security Areas
For the most sensitive areas, such as data centers or executive offices, the highest level of access control should be applied. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) that combines biometric scans with PIN codes or mobile access credentials can provide enhanced security.
4. Benefits of Implementing Concentric Layers in Access Control
Redundancy for Greater Security: One of the main benefits of using concentric layers is the redundancy it provides. Even if an intruder manages to bypass one layer, they still face additional barriers that delay their progress and increase the chances of detection.
Scalable and Customizable: This approach can be scaled and customized based on the unique security needs of a building. From small office spaces to sprawling campuses, the system can be adjusted to fit the required level of protection.
Integrated Monitoring: Advanced access control systems often integrate seamlessly with other security solutions such as surveillance cameras and alarm systems, creating a synchronized response mechanism. Solutions from providers known for their innovative technology — such as Spintly — offer platforms that unify these elements for better monitoring and control.
5. Choosing the Right Access Control System for Your Needs
When choosing an access control system for implementing concentric layers, consider these factors:
Technology Compatibility: Ensure that the access control system can be integrated with existing security infrastructure.
Ease of Use: Systems should be user-friendly, allowing for straightforward management by security personnel.
Scalability: Opt for a system that can grow with your building’s security needs.
Data Security: The system should come with robust data protection measures, especially when biometric data is involved.
Spintly, for instance, offers wireless and cloud-based access control solutions that provide the flexibility needed to implement a comprehensive, layered security approach. Their platforms are designed to integrate seamlessly, ensuring easy scalability and efficient management.
6. Challenges and Considerations
While the concentric layers approach is highly effective, there are some challenges to consider:
Cost of Implementation: Depending on the level of security required, setting up a comprehensive layered system can be costly.
Maintenance and Upgrades: Regular maintenance and updates are necessary to ensure that the system remains effective against new security threats.
Employee Training: Employees need to be trained to understand and comply with the access protocols, ensuring smooth operation without compromising security.
Conclusion
Enhancing building security through concentric layers in access control is an effective way to protect assets, information, and people. By strategically implementing access control systems at various levels, businesses can create a secure environment that minimizes risks and prevents unauthorized access.
To ensure the best outcomes, partnering with a reputable provider that offers flexible and innovative solutions is crucial. Providers like Spintly offer advanced systems that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any organization, helping you build a secure, scalable, and efficient access control framework.

Turnstile Barrier Gates in Bangladesh: Ensuring Security and Efficient Access Control
In Bangladesh, the demand for efficient access control and enhanced security has been rising across various sectors, including commercial spaces, industrial zones, public transportation hubs, and private facilities. One of the most effective solutions for regulating entry and exit in these environments is the use of turnstile barrier gates. These gates play a vital role in controlling pedestrian flow, enhancing security, and providing a seamless user experience in places where monitoring of people entering and exiting is essential.
What is a Turnstile Barrier Gate?
A turnstile barrier gate is a mechanical gate or electronic-controlled system designed to control pedestrian movement, typically by allowing access to one person at a time. These systems are often installed at the entry and exit points of secure premises, where they only permit authorized individuals to pass. The gates are equipped with a rotating barrier arm or a sliding mechanism that grants or denies access based on verification systems such as ID cards, biometric scanners, tokens, or tickets.
Turnstiles are commonly used in high-traffic areas such as metro stations, airports, office buildings, stadiums, and amusement parks. In Bangladesh, turnstile barriers are increasingly being implemented to address the challenges of controlling access to restricted areas while enhancing operational efficiency.
Types of Turnstile Barrier Gates in Bangladesh
There are several types of turnstile barrier gates used across different sectors in Bangladesh, each designed for specific needs and environments. Some of the most commonly deployed types include:
Tripod Turnstiles: These are one of the most widely used types of turnstile gates. Tripod turnstiles feature three rotating arms that allow only one person to pass at a time. Tripod turnstiles are cost-effective, compact, and suitable for locations where moderate security and access control are needed, such as office lobbies, schools, and gymnasiums.
Full-Height Turnstiles: Full-height turnstiles are designed to offer high-security levels. These gates stand tall, usually from floor to ceiling, ensuring that no one can jump or climb over them. They are often installed in places where maximum security is required, such as government buildings, industrial facilities, or data centers.
Swing Barrier Turnstiles: Swing barrier turnstiles consist of retractable barriers that swing open and close to allow access. These turnstiles can be bi-directional and are often integrated with modern access control systems such as facial recognition, RFID, or QR code scanners. Swing turnstiles are particularly popular in locations where smooth, touchless access is desired, such as airports, corporate buildings, and hospitals.
Speed Gates: Speed gates are high-end turnstile barriers known for their sleek, modern designs and fast throughput. They are often installed in corporate offices, luxury hotels, and other high-profile establishments in Bangladesh where both aesthetics and security are prioritized. The glass or metal panels retract quickly to allow users to pass, providing efficient access management.
Optical Turnstiles: Optical turnstiles are barrier-free systems that use infrared sensors to detect and count the number of people passing through. They do not have physical barriers, making them suitable for high-traffic areas where throughput speed is essential. These gates are ideal for locations such as universities, large office buildings, and shopping malls.
Importance of Turnstile Barrier Gates in Bangladesh
As Bangladesh experiences rapid urbanization and industrial growth, managing security risks and maintaining operational efficiency have become critical concerns. Turnstile barrier gates address these challenges by offering the following benefits:
Enhanced Security: Turnstile barrier gates significantly reduce the chances of unauthorized entry. By requiring authentication (ID cards, biometric data, etc.), these gates ensure that only individuals with proper clearance can enter restricted areas.
Controlled Pedestrian Flow: Turnstile gates help manage high volumes of pedestrian traffic by controlling the flow of people into and out of buildings or facilities. This prevents bottlenecks, especially during peak hours, and allows for a smoother entry process.
Data Collection and Monitoring: Turnstiles often work in tandem with modern access control systems, allowing facility managers to collect data on the number of people entering and exiting. This information can be used for security audits, attendance management, or analyzing visitor patterns.
Cost-Effective Solution: Turnstile barrier gates offer a cost-effective means of managing security, as they reduce the need for a large number of security personnel. They provide continuous monitoring of entry points and help ensure that security protocols are followed.
Applications of Turnstile Barrier Gates in Bangladesh
Turnstile gates are being adopted in a wide range of industries and locations throughout Bangladesh, such as:
Corporate Offices: To secure business premises and track employee attendance.
Industrial Zones: For ensuring that only authorized personnel gain access to manufacturing plants, warehouses, or restricted operational areas.
Public Transport: Turnstiles are commonly seen in metro stations and bus terminals for ticket validation and crowd control.
Healthcare Facilities: Hospitals and clinics use turnstile gates to manage the flow of patients and staff, especially in areas where access to sensitive equipment or data is restricted.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Although turnstile barrier gates provide numerous advantages, there are some challenges to their adoption in Bangladesh, particularly in terms of maintenance and integration with outdated infrastructure. Ensuring proper installation, reliable power supply, and regular servicing are critical for the smooth functioning of these systems.
As technology continues to evolve, turnstile barrier gates will likely see further innovations, including integration with AI-powered systems, facial recognition, and mobile app-based access control. As organizations strive to create safer environments, one key element that has gained prominence is the turnstile barrier gate. Turnstile gates are highly effective security systems used to control and monitor pedestrian access in a variety of locations, such as office buildings, factories, airports, metro stations, and event venues. In this article, we will explore the role of turnstile barrier gates in Bangladesh, their types, benefits, and how they contribute to enhanced security and operational efficiency.
What is a Turnstile Barrier Gate?
A turnstile barrier gate is a type of physical barrier installed at entry or exit points to regulate the flow of people. It typically features rotating arms or panels that allow one person to pass at a time, ensuring controlled access. These gates can be integrated with access control systems like RFID cards, biometric scanners, or QR code readers, allowing only authorized personnel to pass through.
Turnstile gates are widely used for both security and crowd management purposes. They prevent unauthorized access, restrict movement in sensitive areas, and track entry and exit data for better surveillance. In Bangladesh, the use of turnstile gates has grown across both public and private sectors due to increasing security concerns and the need for efficient access control.
Types of Turnstile Barrier Gates
Turnstile barrier gates come in various types, each designed for specific security needs and environments. Some of the most commonly used turnstile gates in Bangladesh are:
1. Tripod Turnstiles
The tripod turnstile is one of the most popular types of turnstile barrier gates. It consists of three rotating arms that allow one person to pass at a time. Tripod turnstiles are often used in places with medium-level security requirements, such as metro stations, stadiums, and office buildings. They offer reliable access control and are cost-effective solutions for managing large crowds.
2. Full-Height Turnstiles
Full-height turnstiles provide the highest level of security among turnstile gates. These gates are designed with full-height barriers that extend from the floor to the top of the gate, making it nearly impossible to bypass without authorization. Full-height turnstiles are commonly used in areas with stringent security needs, such as government buildings, prisons, and industrial facilities. They ensure only authorized individuals can enter or exit, making them ideal for preventing unauthorized access.
3. Swing Gate Turnstiles
Swing gate turnstiles are designed with swing panels that open to allow passage. These gates are often used in areas that require wider access points, such as for people with disabilities or those carrying large items. Swing gate turnstiles are commonly installed alongside other turnstile types, providing flexibility for different user needs. They are frequently seen in airports, hospitals, and shopping malls.
4. Speed Gates
Speed gates are modern, high-speed turnstile systems that provide seamless access control with minimal delay. These gates use sliding or retractable panels to allow passage after authentication. Speed gates are often equipped with advanced technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint scanners, making them ideal for high-security environments like corporate offices, financial institutions, and high-tech facilities.
5. Waist-Height Turnstiles
Waist-height turnstiles are similar to full-height turnstiles but offer a less intrusive design. These gates are often used in places with moderate security needs, such as gyms, museums, and entertainment venues. They provide an effective barrier for controlling pedestrian flow while maintaining an open and welcoming appearance.
Benefits of Turnstile Barrier Gates
The growing adoption of turnstile barrier gates in Bangladesh can be attributed to the numerous benefits they offer, including:
1. Enhanced Security
Turnstile gates act as a physical barrier, preventing unauthorized individuals from entering restricted areas. When integrated with access control systems, they ensure that only authorized personnel, such as employees or registered visitors, can gain access. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized entry, theft, or vandalism, especially in high-security locations like government offices or data centers.
2. Improved Access Control
Turnstile gates provide a controlled and monitored entry and exit system. By requiring authentication through RFID cards, biometrics, or QR codes, these gates ensure that each individual is properly verified before being granted access. This enhances the overall security framework of a facility and helps track who enters and exits, which is especially useful for audit trails and security logs.
3. Crowd Management
In high-traffic areas like airports, metro stations, and event venues, managing large crowds efficiently is crucial for ensuring public safety. Turnstile barrier gates regulate the flow of people, allowing only one person to pass at a time. This prevents overcrowding at entry and exit points and minimizes the chances of accidents, such as stampedes.
4. Data Collection and Monitoring
Turnstile gates can be integrated with advanced software that collects and monitors data in real-time. Organizations can track the number of people entering or leaving a building, monitor peak times, and generate reports for better operational planning. This data is valuable for enhancing security, optimizing staffing levels, and improving overall operational efficiency.
5. Cost-Effective Security Solution
Compared to hiring a large number of security personnel, turnstile barrier gates offer a more cost-effective solution for securing entry and exit points. Once installed, they require minimal maintenance and can operate 24/7 without the need for constant human supervision. This makes them a long-term, sustainable investment for organizations seeking to enhance their security infrastructure.
6. Aesthetics and Design Flexibility
Modern turnstile gates come in various designs and finishes, allowing organizations to choose options that match their aesthetic preferences. From sleek, glass-panelled speed gates to robust, full-height turnstiles, there is a wide range of options to suit different architectural styles. This flexibility makes turnstile gates not only functional but also visually appealing.
