Today we celebrate the Venerable Martyr Philothei of Athens. Saint Philothei lived during the Turkish Occupation of Greece. Growing up in a pious and wealthy family, she was married off at the age of 12 to a man who later proved to be an abusive husband. After three years, Philothei’s husband died and she devoted herself to fasting, vigil and prayer and built a monastery with her inheritance. She later became a nun in that monastery. Having lived a life of serving others, especially destitute women, she was brutally attacked by a violent mob of Turks who left her half conscious and bleeding on the ground. The Venerable Philothei soon gave up her soul to the Lord. May she intercede for us always + #saint #philothei #venerable #nun #athens #turkish #turkishoccupation #martyr #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Athens, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0FfiyLaQC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @thesynaxarium Today we celebrate the Holy New Martyr Aquilina of Zagliberi. Saint Aquilina's father denounced his faith and became a muslim out of fear when his daughter was still young. Her mother raised her a Christian, and taught her never to abandon her faith. When Aquilina came of age, the Muslim authorities pressured Aquilina's father to convert his daughter to Islam. When she heard this, she utterly refused, wishing to die rather than deny her faith. She was subject to torture, but this did not shake her faith. They then attempted to win her over with flattery, riches and even a prince to marry, however she remained steadfast in her faith. Eventually, they tortured her so harshly, they left her for dead in the court. Her mother collected her body, and noticing she was still alive, asked her daughter, "what have you done, my child?" To which she replied, "behold, I have preserved the confession of my Faith, just as we agreed.” With these words, she gave up her spirit. On the way to the cemetery, a divine light shine upon her holy relics which also emitted a heavenly fragrance. Today we also celebrate the New Martyr John of Monemvasia. Saint John was a child of exceptional temperament and was famed in his town for this. During the Turkish occupation, his father was killed, and he and his mother were sold off as slaves. Eventually being bought by the same slave, the mother and son were united. The master of Saint John admired the young boy's hard work and good morals and requested to adopt him as his own son. The only catch was that he must accept the Muslim faith. The young John steadfastly refused so his master turned to flattery and then severe torture, however the faith of the young Martyr remained unwavering. The master eventually took him to the mosque in front of many Muslims who beat him severely, to which his only response was, "I am not a Muslim, I am a Christian and I wish to die as a Christian!" Every day, the master and his wife tried to seduce through flattery and even magic to give into temptation and convert to the Muslim faith, however the young John turned to prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos who protected him from such evil. Soon came the fifteen days of fasting for the Dormition feast. Wanting to break the young child's fast, he tied him to a tree where he starved him for a few days. He then came with meat to entice him to break the fast, however he steadfastly refused to dishonour the Theotokos through eating meat. Even his mother tried convincing him to break the fast out of necessity, however he responded that she should have the faith that Abraham had who was willing to sacrifice his own son, and that being a priest's son himself, he ought to focus on the small things, because if not, it would give way to bigger temptations. Having heard this, the Turkish master, in a rage, ran his sword through the young martyr's heart, granting him the crown of martyrdom at the young age of 15. May the young New Martyr John intercede for us all + #saint #john #saintjohn #stjohn #monemvasia #newmartyr #martyr #new #turk #turkish #turkishoccupation #ottoman #rule #father #mother #son #slave #slavery #prayer #fasting #theotokos #dormition #islam #christianity #christian #abraham #isaac #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Monemvasía, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj8kOtfLBTh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today we celebrate the martyrdom of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Cosmas of Aetolia. Saint Cosmas was a monk on Mount Athos during the Turkish Occupation, and he burned with desire to preach the gospel among the people who had lost their zeal in Orthodoxy during the occupation. Receiving a blessing from his elder, Cosmas went through all of Greece and other parts of Asia Minor and Albania, preaching the gospel. Due to his great missionary work, the Turks loathed him and eventually had him publicly hanged. He is considered an ethnomartyr (one who dies for their country) and Equal to the Apostles for his great missionary work. Saint Cosmas also made many prophecies including the end of the occupation, the invention of airplanes, televisions and telephones. The troparion in this video is chanted by the nuns of the Holy Monastery of St. Cosmas in Ontario, Canada.
