For @starblue2406
Here are a few things I'll eat in a day. I typically don't eat a big breakfast, but I will have a big lunch. Dinners in my family are late, usually 6pm to 8pm, we typically walk after dinner, then I'll drink tea to relax before bed.
You'll probably notice a lack of beef and pork, I have trouble digesting them, so it's mostly chicken and seafood. My family also don't eat a lot of bread, it's treated more like a side than a meal.
And yeah, there's a quite a mix of cultures here. My mom's side is Greek/Egypt with Turkish influences from her great grandfather, my dad is Native American with some adopted local New Mexico flavors. Since I was originally born and raised by the ocean, seafood and sea vegetables are a big thing in my diet. They're hard to find in the southwest, but I crave them and they keep me healthy as I have low blood pressure, so I need a bit of healthy salt.

hi, I hate people fighting over national dishes and stuff, especially when it doesn't make sense. grabbing Turks by their shoulders. look at me. Greeks did not steal your dishes. Greece was part of the ottoman empire, under Turkish conquerors, for over--stay with me--400 years. and in some places for even 500 years. Turks were eating in the same place as greeks. it's next to impossible for them to not adapt to those tastes. they had 400 years to do so anyway. that's a very long while mind you. so when you say Greece has stolen baklavas, tzatziki, dolmades or whatever else, you're forgetting basic history and you're disregarding how easily people are influenced and affected by their environment. no one stole anything. no need to feel so pressed about it. obviously, this is not for every Turk, but holy cow have I seen so many complain about this.

If I were on the Off Menu podcast:
Still or sparkling water: Still, obviously. Sparkling water tastes rank. One time when I was a kid, a friend's mum gave me sparkling water that had gone flat so I couldn't tell it was sparkling. I couldn't swallow it so I just spat it out all over my pizza.
Tumblr media
POPPADOMS OR BREAD?!?!?!?!: Usually I'd say bread - something a bit oily with olives in it and big flakes of sea salt - but I've got a big meal planned and I don't want to fill up. So i'll have a single poppadom and some mango chutney.
Tumblr media
Your dream starter: This is kind of academic because I'm ordering small plates, but the first proper dish I want going in my mouth is boquerones en vinagre. It's fresh anchovies marinated in vinegar and oil and seasoned with garlic and parsley and the best boquerones are made in Cambio De Tercio, a tapas restaurant in South Kensington. And to accompany that, I'd like a cold glass of gazpacho (cold tomato soup). I had this a lot in Cádiz and it's the most refreshing thing.
Tumblr media
Your dream main course: Ok, deep breath... I want the crunchy prawns we had at my wedding, the potatoes with aioli I ate in Valencia, an Insalata Caprese (tomatoes, mozarella & basil) made by my dad, deep fried courgette flowers, a small ramekin of my partner's courgette carbonara w. homemade linguini, grilled halloumi from Bar Mezze (a greek restaurant in Muswell Hill my family used to go to before it closed), taramasalata, tzatziki, baba ghanoush (cod roe dip, yoghurt/cucumber dip & smoked aubergine dip) and a big Turkish flatbread for dipping and sauce moppage.
Tumblr media
Your dream side dish: Again, academic because of the small plates but I'll go for the broccoli w. garlic and chilli from Boulangerie Bon Matin in Finsbury park. The broccoli's nicely grilled and not too oily or salty and the chilli gives it a real zing. Also, in my fantasy, my partner's sat across from me eating the wood roasted chicken from Moro in Islington and she's giving me little forkfuls to try.
Tumblr media
Your dream dessert: I'm not much of a dessert person but I'd never say no to a slice of my mum's chocolate birthday cake. It's nothing fancy (though the layer of grated dark chocolate over the top is a classy touch), but it's as delicious now as it was when I was a kid.
Tumblr media
Your dream drink: So before the meal even starts I'd like a Lychee Martini at the bar. Then with my boquerones, I'd like a glass of Pegoes, a Portuguese wine we had at my wedding that has an interesting banana-y taste. When the small plates arrive, I'll move on to a 3/4 pint of Mythos, a Greek beer perfect for hot days and oily food. Then with dessert I want a little glass of Sauternes, my favourite dessert wine. Then, if it's lunchtime I'll just have a homemade filter coffee, with plenty of milk.
Tumblr media
Your dream restaurant: I'll stick with the Mediterranean theme and imagine myself in a seaside town, where it's hot but you're cooled by the breeze and you can see the boats bobbing in the bay. Occasionally a moped revs past but otherwise all you can hear are the other diners and the waves lapping against the harbour. That, but with comfortable chairs!

I'm neither. I'm not Greek, I'm a Caribbean woman, I just loves Tzatziki. I have some pots of it left in my fridge that came with the take out I bought the other day.
I tends to come with Turkish food in London. This Indian restaurant I order from usually gives me pots of Tzatziki.
Fantastic little thing. So refreshing. I think I should learn to make it. I've made it once before in my teens with my friends.

Chicken Döner Unwrapped: The Secret Behind Its Global Popularity
Tumblr media
Chicken Döner, a beloved street food that has become a global sensation, offers a unique blend of juicy marinated meat, fresh vegetables, and flavorful sauces, all wrapped in soft flatbread or pita. Originating from Turkey, döner refers to the cooking method where meat is stacked on a vertical rotisserie and cooked slowly, ensuring each piece is tender and packed with flavor. While the traditional döner is made with lamb or beef, chicken döner has carved its niche as a lighter, yet equally tasty alternative.
A Brief History of Döner
The origins of döner can be traced back to the 19th century in Turkey, where it was first created as a way to cook meat efficiently on a rotating spit. Over time, this cooking technique spread across the Middle East and Europe, especially to Germany, where döner kebabs became a popular street food, particularly in cities with large Turkish communities. Today, döner has evolved to include various meats, but the chicken version stands out for its delicate texture and ability to absorb a wide range of marinades and spices.
The Taste of Chicken Döner
What makes chicken döner so irresistible is the combination of flavors and textures that come together in every bite. The chicken, often marinated in a mixture of yogurt, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and aromatic spices like cumin, paprika, and coriander, develops a deliciously rich flavor. The grilling or rotisserie cooking method ensures the chicken remains juicy and tender on the inside, while slightly crispy on the outside.
The chicken is then thinly sliced and served in a variety of ways. It's commonly wrapped in pita bread or flatbread, but it can also be served in a bowl over rice or salad. Alongside the meat, a selection of fresh vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers adds a crisp contrast to the richness of the chicken. What truly elevates the experience, however, is the sauce—whether it’s a creamy garlic yogurt, tangy tzatziki, or a spicy chili sauce, these condiments bring everything together with an added kick of flavor.
Why Chicken Döner is Loved Worldwide
Tumblr media
One of the reasons chicken döner has gained international fame is its versatility. It's the perfect meal on the go, satisfying both hunger and cravings. Whether you're grabbing one from a local food truck or enjoying it at a high-end restaurant, the flavors remain consistently delicious. Its relatively light nature compared to other meats makes it a popular choice for those seeking a balanced meal that doesn’t compromise on taste.
In conclusion, chicken döner is more than just street food; it’s a fusion of culture, history, and culinary artistry. Whether you’re enjoying it for lunch, dinner, or as a late-night snack, this flavorful dish continues to captivate food lovers around the world. So, next time you're craving something savory, spicy, and satisfying, look no further than a mouthwatering chicken döner!

Yesterday was the Republic Day of Turkey. The Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) culminated in the establishment of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923. As WWII for British people, this war remains a crucial event in Turkish history and celebrated as a victory of national determination over foreign intervention and marking the emergence of a modern and independent Turkey.
Though his legacy is complex and open to discussion and criticism, it does not change the fact that Ataturk was accepted as one of the most prominent military-statesmen of his generation. He was born within the borders of Greece today and I love any kind of joke defining him as a random Greek guy saving Turkish people. It always makes me chuckle.
Coincidentally, I have been listening to the song below a lot recently as it reminds me of home. I feel like I am with my friends, having BBQ and raki in our backyard and it is a really nice summer night. After spending all day by the beach drinking beer and eating boiled corn on the cob, we are back home tired. Having a shower and then napping before dinner. Nothing beats afternoon dooze on summer holidays. Lots of mezes prepared all together in the kitchen - hummus, tzatziki, salads, you name it. A nice kebab on the grill, one of my male friends is responsible for the BBQ and feeds all of us all night. We are eating, drinking, smoking, arguing, crying & laughing together. Loud, messy, direct, emotional - a night representing us. Finishing the night with fresh summer fruits - berries, peaches, melons & cherries. Rinse and repeat.
I sent this song to a Greek colleague. He texted me back saying that - this song reminded him of home: 'Tavernas with good food and cheap wine and spending time with friends.' I texted back and said 'Exactly how I feel.' His surname is actually originally Turkish as he is a Pontic Greek; his family is originally from now northeastern Turkey. Like we have many surnames that are originally from Greece as they were originally from there in the past, like Ataturk himself.
We decided to meet for dinner. Gyros, beers, and lots of mezes. Our kind of food, miles away from home. We both know very well our 'troubled' but 'intertwined' history. He served in the Greek army. I worked in Cyprus, both sides. He smiled: 'You are exactly like us. If I take you home, you would have absolutely no problem with getting along with anyone.' 'Same' I said. And then we started laughing at the fact that our parents would be a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a Turkish & Greek couple in the beginning.
History never stays in the past, it creeps into the current day with its unique ways. We have, willingly or not, become the carriers of it. As long as people do not make each other responsible from their pasts but just require an honest acknowledgement of it, it should be okay.
We made a pact: If I cannot get my residency, he will marry me. He is not British but has a UK residency and Greek passport. In exchange, I will carry his baby as he would like to be a father for so long.
We walked to the station drunk while laughing like two goofies. Hugged each other and parted our ways.
I am not really a fan of celebrating these kinds of national days. But, I could not celebrate the Republic Day better - an evening spent feeling like home with a Greek.
Seems like a random Greek guy still helping a Turk in need, even overseas.
