9 things you didn't know about Saint George

Think of St. George and you're probably picturing a heroic knight slaying a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon.

As the country's patron saint, St. George's story is as iconic as his white and red flag.

But like many early saints, the exact details of his life remain a mystery.

Here, we separate fact from fiction to try to get closer to the truth behind the legend of St. George.

1. St. George wasn't English ...

St. George might be hailed as a national hero, but he was actually born – in the 3rd century AD – more than 2,000 miles away in Cappadocia (modern day Turkey).

He is thought to have died in Lydda (modern day Israel), in the Roman province of Palestine in AD 303.

It is believed that his tomb was in Lod and was a centre of Christian pilgrimage.

2. ... and he wasn't a knight either.

Although St. George is often depicted in popular culture as a knight in shining armour, the truth is less fanciful.

Whilst St. George was depicted from the 11th century as a chilvaric knight or a warrior on horseback, it is more likely that he was an officer in the Roman army.

3. St. George was a martyr ...

Like many saints, St. George was described as a martyr after he died for his Christian faith.

It is believed that, during the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century, St. George was executed for refusing to make a sacrifice in honour of the pagan gods.

4. ... but he never visited England

Although St. George never visited England, his reputation for virtue and holiness spread across Europe and his feast day – the 23rd April – was celebrated in England from the 9th century onwards.

He became popular with English kings.

Edward I (1272-1307) had banners bearing the emblem of St. George (a red cross on a white background) and Edward III (1327-77) had a strong interest in the saint and owned a relic of his blood.

The St. George cross was not used to represent England until the reign of Henry VIII.

5. The dragon was added later.

The story goes that St. George rode into Silene (modern day Libya) to free the city from a dragon who had a taste for humans, but it’s a story that post-dates the real George by several centuries.

Images of George and the dragon survive from the 9th century – 500 years after his death.

Originally, these may simply have been representations of the battle between Good and Evil.

However, the story was developed and popularised in the Middle Ages in a compendium of stories about saints’ lives, The Golden Legend.

6. St. George was a saint for 1,000 years before the 'holiday'

St. George was canonised in AD 494 by Pope Gelasius, who claimed he was one of those 'whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God.'

A feast day of St. George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years on April 23, which was possibly the date of his martyrdom.

Following the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, St. George's Day became one of the most important feast days in the English calendar.

7. England isn't the only country to celebrate St. George

St. George is truly an international saint and England is not the only country or region to claim him as its patron.

England shares St. George with Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia, and Catalonia among others as their patron saint.

Many of these places have their own celebrations and ceremonies in his honour.

8. People turned to St. George for protection

During the Middle Ages, people believed that St.George was one of the 'Fourteen Holy Helpers' – a group of saints who could help during epidemic diseases.

St. George's protection was invoked against several nasty diseases, many fatal and with infectious causes, including the plague and leprosy.

From around 1100, St. George’s help was also sought to protect the English army.

In William Shakespeare’s Henry V, the monarch calls on the saint during his battle cry at the Battle of Harfleur in the famous “Once more unto the breach, dear friends” speech, crying “God for Harry! England, and St. George!”

Five hundred years later – during the First World War – a ghostly apparition of St. George was said to have aided British troops during their retreat from Mons, and the naval commander of the Zeebrugge Raid cited the saint as inspiration.

9. St. George represents those we honour

The Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in 1348, is the highest order of chivalry in the country and Queen Elizabeth II is at the helm as Sovereign of the Garter.

To this day, St. George’s cross still appears on the Garter badge and his image is the pendant of the Garter chain.

In 1940, King George VI created a new award for acts of the greatest heroism or courage in circumstances of extreme danger.

The George Cross, named after the king, bears the image of St. George vanquishing the dragon.

The image of St. George also adorns many of the memorials built to honour those killed during World War One.

Two similar climate cases - brought by six Portuguese youth, and a former French mayor - were thrown out by the judges.

In a landmark decision, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has today ruled that government inaction on climate change violates fundamental human rights.

The right to respect for one’s private and family life is the main legal basis through which the court has previous ruled on environmental cases, but this decision is “historic” regarding the climate crisis, observers say.

The case was brought by an association of older Swiss women concerned about the impact of global warming on their health. They claimed that the Swiss government is not taking enough action.

The ECHR ruled by 16 judges to 1 that the KlimaSeniorinnen (Swiss Elders for Climate Protection) were subject to a violation of Article 8 as well as (unanimously) Article 6 - the right to a fair trial in their country.

“While we do not have all the details yet - this decision is historic!” writes Sébastien Duyck, senior attorney at the Center for International Environmmental Law (CIEL).

“The Court has found the petition admissible and finds a violation of the rights of the Klimaseniorinnen both on process and on the substance!”

Two other climate cases - brought by a former French mayor, and six Portuguese youth - were found to be inadmissible, however.

The Swiss case: Court rules human rights violated by climate inaction

The first of the cases was brought by KlimaSeniorinnen. This association of 2,500 Swiss women have an average age of 73.

The Swiss elders filed a complaint about various “failings” on climate change that “would seriously harm their state of health”. They argued that their government’s policies are “clearly inadequate” for keeping global warming below the Paris Agreement limit of 1.5C.

After battling in the Swiss courts for several years and finally being defeated in the Federal Court - the country’s highest - they escalated the case to the ECHR.

Today, the Strasbourg Court declared that Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights encompasses a right to effective protection by the state “from the serious adverse effects of climate change on lives, health, well-being and quality of life”.

It found that the Swiss Confederation had failed to comply with its duties under the Convention concerning climate change.

“There had been critical gaps in the process of putting in place the relevant domestic regulatory framework, including a failure by the Swiss authorities to quantify, through a carbon budget or otherwise, national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions limitations,” according to the judgment.

Why was the Portuguese youth case thrown out by the court?

Perhaps the most wide-reaching case was brought by six Portuguese young people aged 12 to 24. Fires that spread across their country in 2017 spurred them to action.

Their case was not just against Portugal but every EU member state, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, the UK and Russia.

But it was partly this geographic stretch that made it inadmissible, the Court ruled today.

The ECHR found that there were no grounds in the Convention for the “extraterritorial jurisdiction” sought by the applicants.

Since the Portuguese nationals had not pursued any legal avenue in Portugal concerning their complaints, the complaint against their home country was also ruled inadmissible.

The Court adds that its decision in the case of ‘Duarte Agostinho and Others v. Portugal and 32 Others’ is final.

It is a blow to many who saw this - in the words of Sébastien Duyck - as a “David v. Goliath case” commensurable with the stakes of climate inaction.

Why was the French mayor’s case thrown out by the ECHR?

A third case was brought by the former mayor of the French town of Grande-Synthe, Damien Careme. It complains about the “deficiencies” of the government putting his town at risk from rising sea levels.

Careme filed a case in France’s highest administrative court in 2019. France’s Council of State ruled in favour of the municipality but rejected Careme’s personal case which is how it ended up at the ECHR.

But the judges have rejected the ‘victim status’ of Careme, since he doesn’t currently live in France - having moved to Brussels to take a post as a member of the European Parliament.

What does today's ruling mean for climate action?

These three cases raised several legal questions about a government’s obligations when it comes to climate change.

This includes their duty to prevent foreseeable human rights harms caused by climate change; who can seek protection and redress from climate harms from the ECHR; and the role of international law like the Paris Agreement in determining what is adequate climate action.

There is no specific mention of climate change in the European Convention of Human Rights. But the court has already ruled for industry and waste management that, based on Article 8 or the right to respect for private and family life, states have an obligation to maintain a “healthy environment”.

Today’s ruling in the KlimaSeniorinnen’s favour is “monumental”, says Corina Heri, a postdoc researcher in human rights law and climate change.

“The Court seems to have spelled out a clear way forward for climate cases - and confirmed that climate change is very much an ECHR issue,” she writes from Strasbourg, while live-tweeting the hearing on X.

“This ruling in the Klimaseniorinnen case will have implications way behind Switzerland!” writes CIEL’s Duyck.

He points out that all European states have the same obligations as Switzerland under Article 8 regarding the need to protect the right to private and family life in the context of climate harms.

Six other climate cases adjourned by the ECHR will now be considered in light of today's “groundbreaking decision,” he adds. These including cases where plaintiffs are opposed to Austria, Germany, Italy and Norway.

It started so well across the first few days. Was this the year we’d turned the corner?

No. Because as soon as the games have stopped being so mismatched on paper, we’ve gone to pieces.

Who saw Romania battering Ukraine? Not us. Not even Alex, whose £1.05 win on the game was the only return of the day. And that’s only five pence better than a voided bet - something Neil was desperately hoping for before realising George Puscas had entered the game.

Similarly, either Slovenia or Slovakia beat Belgium in a game marred by the worst handball decision of all time - three strike outs.

Then to France. In a world before his nose was shattered into a million tiny pieces, Kylian Mbappe had a glorious chance to double the French lead, clean through, unmarked. But he missed. Somehow. Astonishingly so. And with it, our chances faded.

It’s been a bad day and the scoresheet confirms just how bad.
