"You'll see a different point of view"
Last year, three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone made his 20th directorial outing with Snowden—a look at the life of former NSA consultant and whistleblower Edward Snowden. The film took Stone on numerous trips to Russia, where Snowden has lived in exile since 2013, which then led to a series of interviews with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The format is something Stone has used to great effect before in his documentaries about controversial politicians such as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez.
I can’t think of too many of your peers who would do something like travel to Russia to conduct interviews with Putin. How much of this came from the time you spent there with Edward Snowden?
I met Mr. P. over there, during one of those trips. I was introduced to him, and one of the earliest conversations we had was about Edward Snowden—because obviously, I’m fascinated by what happened, from his point of view. And sure enough, he was very forthright and honest, the way he speaks. As we talked, he told me the Snowden story from his point of view, which is in the film.
In the western media view we get of Putin, he comes off like a Bond villain. Why was all this important to you?
I think in the film, we did him the justice of putting his comments into a narrative that can explain his point of view, in the hopes that it would prevent continued misunderstanding between the countries, and trust, lack of trust, and—I fear—a near state of war, on the brink of war. That’s what I’m worried about, and that’s why I returned. We did four different visits after Snowden to get this on film. On every situation he talks about in the film, you’ll see there’s a different point of view than what we’ve been told.
Is this a documentary like the ones you made with Castro or Chávez?
It’s not a documentary in the sense that there, we examine the whole situation from two different points of view. No. It’s told from his point of view, which allows us to hear him in, I think, a pretty interesting way. For example, now you never see him on American television. Well, he did an interview with Charlie Rose for his show. It wasn’t bad, but it was short, and they dubbed him with an American interpreter who was a tough guy, almost like a baseball announcer. So everything [Putin] was saying in Russian, the dubber was making the words harsh, as opposed to the way he actually speaks. Putin speaks very clearly, very evenly. Doesn’t raise his voice. There’s a big difference already in the interpretation of what you’re getting. If you’re a guy who’s dubbed, and he’s talking like a Russian is supposed to talk, it’s quite a difference. That’s one example.
One thing you have to remember is that he’s popular in many countries, and not just Russia. He’s very popular in Germany, France, among many people—and he’s one of the most admired men—and for that matter, in a lot of Africa, a lot of Turkey, Syria, the Middle East. So you’re talking about a world figure here who we are constantly demeaning, treating him like he’s a con man and a murderer. As a character out of The Godfather, because maybe we like The Godfather.
We like that concept of villains, but it’s a very dangerous caricature when you’re dealing with world peace and the nuclear power that we have.
It’s reminiscent of when the Bush administration lumped every world leader that ran afoul of U.S. policy into that axis of evil, which meant no dialogue was necessary. Are you trying to demystify Putin as you tried to do with Castro and Chávez, with simple dialogue?
Very well said. Absolutely. And it’s important to do so. We are really creating a fear and a situation in the American mind that is very dangerous. All of a sudden, it’s conveniently shifting to, “Oh, forget about the war on terror. He’s the bad guy.”
Sean Penn went a long way through the jungles to interview El Chapo, trying to humanize a villainized cartel leader, and Penn himself was criticized for being in over his head. How do you come at these figures, knowing that if you allow them to come off too sympathetic, you’ll be the one who’s vilified for it?
Well, I don’t think like that. I don’t. If they come off too sympathetic, that’s really a manipulation. My intention is to get to the bottom. First of all, I prepare as well as I can, try to research as much as I can. I know what I’m talking about. They’ll pick up on it if you don’t know what you’re talking about. That’s the problem with some television interviews. The anchor is so busy running from one show to the other, he doesn’t really prepare. I got some good information, and I think he respected the fact that I knew my subject. And that I was talking to him with a genuine sense of curiosity.
Did Putin know your work as a director? Does he have a favorite Oliver Stone film?
Well, he knew I was doing the Snowden movie, and he knew I was very interested in it. He had seen some sections of my work. I never asked him what he liked, what he didn’t like, and so forth. Certainly in Russia, they admire the war movies, because they’ve been through a lot of war. I’m sure he saw Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July. But I don’t know what he’s seen. I know that Untold History of the United States, which took five years, was very popular in Russia. It had a very strong view of World War II and the Cold War. And I think it did a very good job of demystifying that. I think he was aware of that.
Donald Trump recently said that he would meet Kim Jong-un in the right circumstances. Would one of these lengthy interview sit-downs with the North Korean leader appeal to you?
Frankly, I don’t do this for a living. You know, I rarely do this. The last time I did it was 2009, with Mr. Chávez. It’s not a living, it’s a curiosity. Also I think with the Korean leader, you have a danger there. Does he communicate at all? I don’t even know him, so I can’t say. Mr. Putin worried me. He’s stoic, and known as a reasonable man and a rational man, the way he talks. So sometimes you wonder, “Is there going to be any emotion in this thing?” You have the opposite of the Castro problem. So I’m dealing more with behavior. When you talk to a man or woman over a certain period of time, you do get behavior. And we got some very interesting body language. We walk, we talk, we’re in the woods, we’re in offices, we’re riding together in cars. There’s all kinds of scenes, which you’ll see.
When President Obama gave a break to Chelsea Manning, who leaked the documents to Julian Assange, did you think that maybe Snowden should’ve been dealt with in a similar way? Do you have an idea of what will happen to him?
No, I thought Snowden did a lot of interviews. He was very smart. I think he made his case transparent, to me. Everything he said about the journalists, and what he wanted to do, is what came across in the [documentary], in my film too. I think he’s very clear. I think certain people just didn’t ever pay attention to what he said. But you asked earlier about Sean Penn, and El Chapo. As I remember, that was not an interview, was it?
It almost seemed like an Apocalypse Now-style journey into the jungle—something Penn called “experiential journalism”.
Oh, I get it. It wasn’t at all what I’m doing. I’m filmed, I’m with a crew. From the beginning, it’s an official interview.
The reason I brought that up was because it didn’t work out the way Penn hoped it would. He was trying to look for common threads to someone who was viewed as a villain to all of us, but his questions seemed soft, on paper.
He might’ve protected himself by bringing a camera in that case, is what I want to say.
This is for Deadline’s Cannes issue. There was talk of taking Snowden being there last year. How much did that cost you, not going?
Well, we wanted to go to Cannes. It was an Open Road decision to bring [the release date forward] to September, and I think that was a mistake. They did a good job, but I think we would’ve had a lot more heat at Cannes because European critics ended up liking the film the most. In the U.S., we had mixed reviews, the usual mess. But we always knew that the U.S. would be more hostile to Snowden.
Your Wall Street sequel premiered at Cannes before its fall release, and seemed to suffer for it.
They should have released the film at the same time. That’s what Fox said, and I agree that they should have rolled it out then. But that was a different film, a different place. Snowden’s time was in Europe. He was most popular there. That’s where you go—you go where the heat is.
It feels like what studios want are either giant, global tentpoles, or micro-budget genre films. How different is it for you than when you came in the door years ago with a movie that sought to challenge audiences?
Well, those days are over, I think we all know that. Listen, Snowden was financed out of Europe. And basically this Putin documentary was financed out of Fernando Sulichin and his South American connections, as well as Europe. So it seems that I’m going to be working out of Europe for a while. I really believe in making good movies, and you have to piece together every one.
The changing landscape has brought about alternative outlets like Netflix, Amazon and Showtime, where your Putin interviews will be released. What changes excite you as a filmmaker?
You just become a TV film. And there’s a thousand of them, it seems all the time. It is a very crowded market, and I think you have to take your chances. But at least you get to film; hopefully you get to make what you want to. If you’re ending up working for some place where you’re just doing something you don’t even care about, my god, what suffering you’re going through. I don’t know what I’m going to do, after this. But it’s always tough. I don’t even know who the studio chiefs are anymore. They don’t even know me. Probably, they’ve forgotten who I was. They don’t have good memories beyond a year or two.
Then again, how easy would it have been for you to make Platoon if you hadn’t distinguished yourself as a writer of commercial dramas? How tough was that movie to get financed back in the day?
Don’t forget, it was passed on by every studio. It was made by a British independent filmmaker called John Daly. Don’t ever forget that. I won’t. And Salvador too. So I got into this business at the low end of the spectrum on a very low-budget film. I never really had a Hollywood base. My best deal I ever had for a few years was at Warner Bros. It’s where I made a few films, because Terry [Semel] and Bob [Daly] were more sympathetic to my views than anyone. But I make one film here, one film there. I’ve never had a home beyond Warner Bros. for that brief period of time. Platoon was rejected everywhere, and Salvador was too—it would never have been made now.
My first studio film, as a writer, I connected with Midnight Express, and even that was very low-budget. Scarface was not well-reviewed, and didn’t do that well. It was always tough for me to get films made in that system, but it was easier then than it is now. If you wrote the most brilliant film with real characters, it would not be made, probably because it would be considered to have not enough action. So it’s never easy. I’ve never looked to them for a solution, and thankfully I’m still working. I’m 70 years old.
What fuels you now?
I feel like I have my own life on the side. And I feel very strongly about war and the path to war. I think that there’s an internal war in the United States right now. There’s a very small peace party, and a very large war party. I’m very worried about it. I do not want to have our lives ended or shattered in any way by this constant belligerence we bring to the world, whether it’s Korea, whether it’s China, whether it’s Russia. We keep making statements like we’re in charge and we’re the bully.
We have to realize that other countries want their sovereignty. We can’t be like this. We really are no longer a uni-polar power—we cannot act like it. [We were] the top boss, that was brief, and that was in the 1990s, and we blew it by attacking Iraq twice. We think we run the world. As a young man, I was very conservative; I grew up that way. But Vietnam and the other wars have taught me that we can’t run the world this way.
What would be the alternative?
The alternative is a multi-polar world, taking into the account the interest of other countries and the sovereignty of other countries. That includes Iran, China and Syria. These countries are legitimate countries, with sovereignty of their own. And Iraq, too. We undermined Iraq’s sovereignty. It’s a wreck now. And Libya too, don’t forget Libya. We’re responsible for that. We brought chaos to this world, in the Middle East especially, and it’s engulfed us. All these refugees, that’s our fault. I’m sorry, don’t get me going here.
Is there a project on your bucket list?
Yes. Something I’ve been writing over a period of time, that I very much care for and hope I can do one day. I can’t tell you what it is, but it’s a drama. It’s personal.

AF2 Common 12/6: Luca’s Birthday
Another year is nearing its end. “That day” is just around the corner…
~*Scene: Hallway*~
Debito: Bambina, do you know what day it is tomorrow?
Felicita: Yeah…it’s Luca’s birthday
Luca: Ahh…Ojou-sama, you remembered
Pace: You’re so loved, Luca-chan!
Luca: Yes. I’m so glad. I’m really happy to have lived this long…
Felicita: Luca…you’re being overdramatic
Debito: Oh, you knew. I thought Luca would have been all “my birthday isn’t that important…” and never told you
Luca: I’ve lived with her for 13 years. It would be weird if she didn’t know. We’ve celebrated it every year
Debito: Now you’re bragging?
Pace: You shouldn’t do that!
Luca: Ehem. In any case, I’m not that secretive
Pace: Really? You look like you hide a ton of things under that hat
Luca: My hat…? How could I hide things under it?
Debito: Well, Luca-chan being weird is normal. So we can just go all out
Pace: Oh? Should we shoot some fireworks?
Luca: Are you two planning something?
Debito: You’ll see tomorrow
Felicita: Debito…?
~*Scene: Hallway*~
Felicita: [The next day, Debito told me to come to the dining room]
Felicita: (I hear a weird sound whenever I get close to the dining room…I wonder what it is—)
(*splat)
Felicita: That sound again…
~*Scene: Dining Room*~
Pace: Ojou! You’re here
Debito: Oh, right on time
Felicita: On time…?
Martha: Here they are. Okay don’t just stand there, let’s line them up on the table
Luca: Yes, let’s. Especially you, Pace. This was your idea, so get to work
Debito: You’re working hard even though it’s your birthday. I’ve never heard of a guy who would make himself dolce
Luca: Isn’t that because I’m the only who knows how to make them
Felicita: There’s so many limone pies…are you eating all of them?
Pace: Of course not! We couldn’t eat this many
Debito: Not very believable coming from the person who usually orders 20 or 30 servings
Pace: Not true, I know my limits. 20 servings is just right for me!
Felicita: I don’t think normal people eat that much…
Luca: Actually, these giant limone pies aren’t for eating—
(*smirk)
Pace: Yeah, not for eating…they’re for this! Hiyah!!
Felicita: Huh…?
Luca: Ojou-sama, watch out!
(*step) Debito: Hya!
(*throw)
Luca: Wha!? Bwah…
(*splat) (*collapse)
Debito: Pace…you almost hit Bambina
Debito: Are you okay? Oh, you got some cream on you there
Debito: Should I clean it off for you?
(*blush) Felicita: N-no!
Pace: Come on Debito, more! I get wanting to shield Ojou though
Felicita: !
Pace: Ehehe, ‘cause I feel the same! So Ojou, catch this!!
Felicita: Pace!?
(*dash) Luca: No you will not! Now it’s my turn!
(*catch)
Pace: Uwa, not good!
(*throw) (*splat)
Debito: Ah Pace, minus 1 for you
Luca: *sigh*…that was close. You can’t aim at Ojou-sama while I’m down!
Debito: There’s no rule against it. Since Bambina’s here, that means she’s playing too
Luca: Please don’t get Ojou-sama involved in such a dangerous game
Pace: Oh? Did it fall off already? That white beard looked good on you, Luca
Debito: You’re right, it was all white and fluffy. Should we give you another one? A man in his thirties has to at least have a beard
Luca: No thank you! And a white beard is for the elderly, not someone in their thirties!
Pace: There’s old men with beards that aren’t white too these days
Luca: That’s not the point…
Debito: Sure you want to keep talking?
Luca: If it’s what you want, then I won’t hold back!!
Debito: Get him, Pace!!
Pace: Okaaay!
Luca: I’ll throw from here next then! Hyah!
Debito: Oh that’s you’re plan! Take this!
Pace: Hiyah!!
(*splat splat)
Luca: Bweh… why are you two a team! That’s against the rules!
Debito: Never heard of that rule, have you, Pace?
Pace: Nope, haven’t
Luca: Debito, Pace…
Luca: …Pace, if you team up with me I’ll make you a turkey feast for lunch tomorrow!
Pace: Say that again!
Luca: And I’ll throw in a nice, fluffy panettone too! (TN: a kind of sweet bread)
Pace: Deal!!!
Debito: You’re betraying me!
Pace: I just act on instinct! Hiyaah!
Martha: Goodness, those three always act like children no matter how old they get. Ojou-sama is much more of an adult
Martha: But fun times do go by too quickly. So it’s best to enjoy yourself when you can
Felicita: Yeah, you’re right. Martha, I’ll join in too…!
(*running)
Martha: Go and get them!
~*Scene: Dining Room*~
Felicita: So tired…
Luca: I really didn’t think you would join in, Ojou-sama
Pace: It’s fun when Ojou joins!
Debito: If the Maid Triad doesn’t come soon, I’ll want us to take a bath too…
Pace: Yup!
Luca: That will not happen!
Felicita: …
Felicita: Do you always celebrate like this?
Luca: No, the three of us didn’t start celebrating together until recently
Pace: Yeah. Since you were living with Ojou and Mama, we weren’t together as often as we are now
>It seems like you’d do more than just celebrate for Debito
(+20 Amore Debito)
>Would you eat a lot for your birthday, Pace?
(+20 Amore Pace)
>That must have been hard, Luca…
(+20 Amore Luca)
Debito: Are you interested in my birthday, Bambina?
(*smirk) Debito: I’ll tell you all about it if you come visit me on my birthday
Debito: But you have to come alone, okay?
Pace: Hey Debito, no keeping her to yourself!
Luca: Agreed! I will not allow you and Ojou-sama to be alone together!
Debito: Shut up, third wheelers…
Pace: The lasagna party we had was the best so far. It was so fun!
Debito: I think you were the only one who had fun
Pace: We celebrated my birthday last year with a table full of lasagna. Being surrounded by lasagna was so great…
Pace: I’m happy just remembering it!!
Luca: Making all those was definitely not fun though
Luca: I was making one lasagna after another…I’m going to try just thinking about it
Luca: We don’t actually throw a big celebration every year
Luca: I think we did a “limone fight” last year, and a “zuccotto fight” the year before that?
Pace: It feels good to throw things, doesn’t it? And it’s your birthday, so we have to do something memorable
Debito: The weirder it is, the more memorable, right?
Luca: You’re saying that now, but we only do it because you two want to fool around!
Debito/Pace: Yup
Luca: Seriously…it’s starting to become a tradition for me to make sweets for myself
Luca: But I’m happy that you two want to celebrate with me
Debito: But the reason we make such a big deal about it is because of her, right?
Pace: The governor of Nordia, Agata! Right?
Felicita: Nordia…Agata…
Luca: Yes. I don’t believe you’ve met her, Ojou-sama. But she’s a very wise and strong woman
Pace: Yup, very strong. Even I’d lose to her if I’m not careful
Debito: Yeah. Agata’s whip deals quite a bit of damage
Felicita: Wh-whip!? …She sounds like quite something
Luca: She’s strict when it comes to discipline and manners, but she know how to have fun too
Pace: If she heard about our limone pie fight, I’m sure Agata would want to join in too
Felicita: She would?
Debito: She revived her domain by sponsoring a festival or something actually
Debito: We wouldn’t make this much of a fuss if she hadn’t stuck her nose in
Felicita: Amazing… So she’s both proactive and fun-living…
Luca: You might get to meet her if you get the chance
Felicita: Yeah
Pace: But anyway, that limone pie fight was so fun! I can’t believe I hit Luca right in the face!
Debito: I wish I could have seen you with that beard a little more
Luca: Once is enough, thank you! And you kept aiming at my face after that…
(*smile) Felicita: *laugh*
Luca: Ojou-sama…?
Pace: Haha Luca-chan. Ojou’s laughing at you
Debito: It’s because your beard was so funny. We really should hit him with a pie again
Luca: No thank you! And that’s not why you’re laughing anyway, right Ojou-sama?
Felicita: I want to do this next year too. The four of us together…
Luca: Ojou-sama…. Yes, of course. All four of us
Pace: My birthday’s next, so let’s have a lasagna fight! Ah, that’s be a waste though…
(*smirk) Debito: I’ll pass on anything loud. So let’s make it just the two of us instead
Debito: For Bambina, I’ll make it a night you won’t forget
Luca: We’ll have neither! Next time we’ll celebrate our birthdays by eating sweets in a normal way
Debito/Pace: No thanks
Luca: What! Why!?
Felicita: *smile*
~*Scene: Dining Room*~
Pace: Today we’re celebrating Luca-chan’s birthday. The most understanding and considerate man in the family, and Ojou-s attendant
Pace: Luca, happy birthday!!
Debito: Yeah I’ll say it. Happy birthday
Felicita: Happy birthday, Luca
Luca: Debito, Pace…Ojou-sama. Thank you so much!
Debito: Don’t cry, Luca. Seriously, how are you a Regalo man?
Pace: Ehehe, you’re such a crybaby Luca-chan. I’m still happy though
Luca: I am not crying. It’s just so surprising
Luca: …Nevermind. I’m happy. Thank you
Felicita: Luca…
Debito: Pace, anything else?
Pace: Oh right! Ehem, okay everyone, get your glasses ready!
Pace: May our bonds with Luca-chan be eternal—
Pace/Debito/Felicita: Salute!
Luca: Salute!

Now-a-days, it is getting changed with solid-phase synthesis due to its simplicity as compared to the previous. Nevertheless, liquid stage synthesis continues to be useful in the large production of peptides for commercial purposes. To try to find a peptide mimetic, it is very essential to determine a peptide or a peptide series within the target protein that is thought about for the assay. Structural constraints are taken into consideration to try to find the legitimacy of the functions.
Are SARMs a controlled substance?
This bill amends the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to add SARMs (selective androgen receptor modulators) to schedule III. A SARM is a synthetic drug or substance that has effects similar to testosterone.
Bicycles can be readily recognized to medication a vast spectrum of targets as well as target classes, including several that have so far been undruggable with small molecules, such as protein-protein communications. However, there was a reduction in healthcare facility admissions for heart failure for every person. Toni Weinschenk got his PhD in Immunology at the University of Tuebingen. He has actually created the innovation platform XPRESIDENT, which incorporates methods from peptidomics, genomics and immunology in order to locate unique and normally presented cancer cells antigens. The platform is commercialised by immatics biotechnologies, where Toni Weinschenk, likewise a co-founder of the business, is heading the medicine exploration team. Utilizing a hydrolysed healthy protein can help to lower GI and/or dermatological indications as the hydrolysed protein is not able to crosslink receptors on pole cells, consequently reducing degranulation and also release of histamine. Bradykinin is an inflammatory arbitrator as well as a vital regulatory authority of high blood pressure, kidney feature and also heart function, and additionally associated with swelling.
By customizing the amino acid series we can manage whether these peptides construct right into hydrogels made up of nanofibers or peptide nanotube frameworks. We have actually created our very own internal modern technology to allow for the post-folding labelling of tiny healthy proteins. This method, which uses a concealed cysteine moiety, can be utilized to present a fluorophore or PEG molecule birthing maleimide performance into the item after the disulfide bridges have been created. This approach has been put on a number of chemokine, enhance healthy protein and conotoxin targets. Almac has substantial experience in the conjugation of peptides to a variety of provider healthy proteins consisting of keyhole limpet hemocyanin, Ovalbumin, Bovine Lotion Albumin, and Human Product Albumin. Peptides are an expanding course of drugs, with buildings in between tiny particles and biologics. Insulin is a widely-used instance of an establised peptide-based therapy.
With half a century of experience and also subsidiaries in Switzerland, the USA, the UK and also Japan, Bachem is the partner of selection for the biotech and pharma sector worldwide. Over 20+ research studies have been published making use of the RALA system, varying from the fundamental design and also application of an efficient cell passing through peptide to make use of as a potential healing mRNA vaccination prospect. Variants around a hit molecule can be made by utilizing various enzymes as well as response schemes, consisting of further tailoring by oxidation of the heterocycles as well as decoration with prenyl groups.
The introduction of such a RNA replicase is extensively considered to mark the key point in the beginning of life. Study from Philipp Holliger's group in the LMB's PNAC Department has dropped new light on just how the RNA globe, and also its RNA replicase, may have very first come to be dependent on short proteins, starting the transition to our contemporary biology. This most current paper goes over how hydrolysed salmon peptides might change glycerine-- a nutritionally empty component-- in semi-moist animal treats delivering high dietary protein value as well as great palatability, together with other health and wellness advantages.
Lastly, the writers of this book want to generate a trigger of admiration for the possible and also elegance of cyclic peptides, contrasting the rather disparaging touch reverberating along with their initial word stem peptós. Head-to-tail-, side chain-to-side chain-, and side chain-to-terminus-cyclization.34,35 Numerous loops are also on a regular basis found in peptides, e.g. a combination of a head-to-tail- and also a side chain-to-side chain-macrocycle. Thus the simplest homodetic macrocyclic peptide is a covalent circuit developed of at least 4 residues. Nonetheless, smaller sized (non-macro-) cyclic themes likewise take place including just a restricted variety of constricted bonds. Number 1.3 shows a few of one of the most basic and typical themes.34 Comparing these frameworks, it immediately becomes clear that each specific mode of cyclization can lead to a completely different geometry of the looped compound. Liquid-phase synthesis is a traditional strategy for the synthesis of peptides.

N2 - We define a method of separating and assessing a single collagen peptide able to compare lamb as well as goat bone collagen. Microflow can assist in https://poland.direct-peptides.com/ for a variety of analytes, yet the greatest benefit has been for peptides as well as healthy proteins. A DPhil student is required to discover the modern technology further to look for opportunities to improve antigen discussion in both antigen presenting cells and also target cells. This will be done through developing a couple of candidates of injections to preclinical phase. Bachem has actually confirmed effectiveness of Tide Fluor fluorescent color in a a Förster Vibration Power Transfer analysis of uptake of Amyloid β-Protein (1-42) by J774 macrophages, gotten from BALB/c computer mice. The Amyloid β-Protein (1-42) was classified with Trend Fluor ™ 5WS fluorescent dye to make it possible for visualization. The cells were displayed in intense area imaging overlaid with the eco-friendly fluorescent network of the peptides.
Reduced bioavailability of the peptides is additionally a major disadvantage associated with peptide medicines which is partially due to the inadequate membrane layer transportation capability of its amide foundation framework. • the very first successful randomised professional trials in cancer people that might result in the initial FDA enrollment of a healing cancer cells injection within the next few years. pIII small coat healthy protein which shows a cell targeting ligand (e.g. RGD4C), which allows extremely targeted delivery to the target cell, for instance a tumour cell. ABDOMINAL - We describe a technique of isolating and also evaluating a single collagen peptide able to distinguish between lamb as well as goat bone collagen. The 33 amino acid peptide from both sheep as well as goat collagen was sequenced as well as revealed to vary in between both varieties at 2 placements. Evaluation of a variety of caprines indicated that the series modifications occurred between the divergence of the Himalayan tahr and also the ibex and that the recommended goat marker is analysis of all Capra varieties and breeds.

116. gold diggers of ‘49 (1935)
release date: november 2nd, 1935
series: looney tunes
director: tex avery
starring: tommy bond (beans), joe dougherty (porky), bernice hansen (kitty), billy bletcher (villain)
oh man, where to begin? this is probably the most important review yet, arguably more important than i haven’t got a hat. you’re seeing that right! this is tex avery’s directorial debut. some history before we start (yes, this is going to be one of those LONG posts, but it’s certainly worth it):
tex had worked at walter lantz before working at warner bros, where he suffered an eye injury. he was horseplaying in the office—they had a game where one would shoot a rubber. and or a spitball at someone and hit them in the back of the eye, yelling “bullseye!” with each successful shot. the game evolved to using paper clips, and someone told tex to look out. he turned around just in time for the paper clip to strike him in his left eye, losing vision in said eye. many have attributed his poor depth perception to the wackiness and bizarre nature of his cartoons.
avery applied for warner bros, bluffing his way through and telling leon schlesinger he was a director. tex is cited as saying “'hey, i’m, a director'. hell! i was no more a director than nothing, but with my loud mouth, i talked him into it.” with hardaway gone, freleng and king were the only directors there, and avery was graciously accepted.
yet, the staff was growing in size, and avery’s unit was beyond the limit for a single studio. thus, termite terrace was born—a shoddy five room bungalow affectionately dubbed termite terrace as a result of their termite houseguests. he was assigned animators bob clampett, chuck jones, sid sutherland, and virgil ross. instead of animators swarming around to whatever director needed them, avery now had a solid unit, a model that would continue on and distinguish the animators/units as we know them today.
tex is attributed to birthing the studios greatest stars. daffy duck, elmer fudd, and bugs bunny (it could be debated whether he created bugs or ben hardaway created bugs, especially since bugs was hardaway’s nickname and literally named bugs’ bunny. however, for simplicity’s sake, tex is virtually the creator of bugs. he solidified the voice, the personality, and the design, which differed greatly from the hayseed loon that was hardaway’s bugs.) he had a relatively short career at warner bros, leaving in 1941 after a dispute with leon schlesinger over his cartoon the heckling hare (which we’ll cover in depth once we get there). he moved to mgm, where his potential as a director really exploded. he spawned the iconic yet austere droopy, as well as red hot riding hood, the inspiration for jessica rabbit in who framed roger rabbit. this man is responsible for a LOT, including holding the title as one of my favorite directors (the others being, of course, bob clampett and frank tashlin. coincidentally, all of them left sometime in the 40s. maybe that’s why i love the 40s cartoons so much)
i’ll run my mouth more at the end of the review, soap boxing on why this cartoon is so important, but let’s actually SEE the contents of the cartoon so we can interpret it. it’s 1849, the heart of the gold rush. beans and porky wish to hit it big by digging for gold, but a nefarious villain snatches their findings, resulting in trouble.
tex avery loved to play around with words, whether it be sign gags or narrating captions as we see here. open to a remote western town, rife with cacti and dry land. “THE TIME” is proudly displayed on the screen as we pan to a covered wagon, a calendar inside clueing us in that it’s july of 1849. “THE PLACE”—we pan to a saloon titled “GOLDVILLE SALOON”. and, of course, “THE GIRL”.
little kitty comes bounding out of the general store, joining a crowd congregating around a bulletin board. the newspaper article posted details beans’ gold digging ambitions: “YOUNG PROSPECTOR TO HUNT GOLD IN RED GULCH”. a picture of a proud beans, posing with his pickaxe and his mule. below it: “BEANS — local boy to brave hazards of red gulch for gold”.
absolutely ecstatic, kitty snatches the paper from the billboard and rushes away. bernice hansen’s delivery is on point and absolutely hilarious as kitty gives her breathless monologue: “oh, that’s my sweetie, and i’ll bet he’ll find the gold, and he loves me and everything!”
porky makes his second major (i use that term loosely, since his appearance in i haven’t got a hat wasn’t REALLY a major role but more of an acknowledgement) appearance, this time as a fully grown adult, father to kitty. genetics work in mysterious ways. he fixes himself a giant towering sandwich, including a whole fish, a block of cheese, sausage links, and an entire roasted turkey. sustenance! he scarfs the sandwich down and gives an ecstatic “WWWWHHOOOOPEEEE!!”, a catchphrase of his that thankfully never returned outside of this short. still extremely amusing. as i said before, i don’t find dougherty’s porky “painful” like how some other people find it, but i definitely think this is his most awkward performance, and it’s not even because of his characterization, but the decision not to speed up his voice. dougherty had a very deep voice, and in this cartoon his voice isn’t sped up at all. it’s a bit jarring, but this WAS his second real appearance. tex’s next porky cartoon, the blow out, would have him back as a (much cuter) plucky child.
kitty rushes in and shoves the paper in porky’s face, continuing her breathless babbling. “look what my sweetie’s gonna do! i’m so proud of him! he loves me and everything! he’s gonna find gold and we’re gonna be married! and right this minute, he’s way out in the mountains—“ kitty’s breathless narration continues as we get a shot of the mountains. a long, exposed tunnel goes right through one of the mountains, where we get a distance shot of beans hacking away at a mountain. “and right now he might be discovering gold!”
a closeup reveals beans picking away at the side of the mountain, carving a little hole. just above it are some slots. beans plucks a button from his shirt and feeds it into the makeshift machine, pulling a branch as a lever. he spins, and lands the jackpot. a plethora of gold coins rush out of the slot, beans collecting the loot with his hat. if only it were that easy!
rightfully gleeful, beans cries “gold!gold!” and leaps on his trusty steed. a giant “GOLD!” zooms into view on the screen as beans gallops along on his mule, rushing into town. he bursts into the saloon and declares “i found gold in the gulch, boys! gold in the gulch!”
all of the patrons echo “GOLD?” incredulously, deserting their post at once. even the bartender leaps over the bar, leaving behind some ice cream and other desserts on the counter. a bit of an awkward shot—there’s a still frame of the food on the counter, and you’d expect someone to come in and take the food with them, but that’s not the case. it just sits there and goes onto the next scene. i wonder if there were any cuts, or if didn’t have time, or what. nevertheless, it’s slightly jarring but a menial thing to pick at.
one by one, the patrons leap on their horses and follow beans to his site. a man flops to the ground where his horse rides HIM instead—a regular gag in the looney tunes universe, but one that tex avery seemed to enjoy in particular. can’t blame him.
beans alerts everyone in town—a dog in the bathtub, the dog taking his bathtub with him as he runs, two stereotypical chinese men at the laundromat (yeah, not a good way for tex to start off. just blatantly racist.), and a barbershop quartet singing “sweet adeline” outside of a barbershop, animation by bob clampett. beans alerts them, and the quartet runs off... until they rush right back to finish their song. a great gag as they run right back to find the gold.
next stop, kitty’s house. beans rushes inside and exclaims “i found gold!”, holding kitty by the hands. porky pokes his head out from the kitchen, wielding a fork and spoon, where he repeats “gold?” incredulously. no time is wasted as he jogs right out the door, donning a ten gallon hat and a pick axe. beans excuses himself, kitty refusing to let go. he runs out the door, and kitty reflects on her sweetie. good, snappy timing as beans unexpectedly zooms right back inside, dipping kitty and giving her a rather passionate kiss. he leaves once more as kitty collects herself.
porky has his jalopy all ready to go, and beans jumps right in. porky gives another “WHOOPEE!” as they barrel on. more blatant racism as they pass the chinese men traveling via rickshaw. porky and beans zoom right past them, and a cloud of exhaust cover the men. predictably, they’re now in blackface, talking in a stereotypical accent (as if they weren’t before). obviously, it goes without saying why or how this is disgusting and wrong. i love tex avery as much as the next person, but this isn’t a good start. you’re better than this, tex! it bears mentioning regardless. although we’ll explore a ton of beautiful, great cartoons, we’ll also be examining cartoons that are equally nasty and grotesque. both are important and deserve equal attention.
fade out and back in to the site where beans struck it rich. porky gives another “WHOOPEE!” and strikes his axe into the ground, as do the siamese twins and beans. porky sticks his hand in his hole, where he pulls out a shiny coin and yells “gold!” so far, his dialogue has been three “WHOOPEE!”s and two variations of “gold”. what a complex character! he stores his find in his back pocket for safekeeping. a highly amusing gag as he sticks his hand down again, this time his hand extending through another hole near his pocket. he fishes his hand into his back pocket (unknowingly) and grabs his find, reaching his hand out of the hole and admiring his “new” loot.
the process repeats until beans’ voice stops porky in his tracks. he’s found something. porky tosses a rope down into the cavernous hole that beans is in, and with a few good tugs, beans pops out of the hole, perched on top of a heavy treasure chest.
everyone crowds around as porky and beans lift the chest. inside is a tiny little book, covered in a thick layer of cobwebs that reads “HOW TO FIND GOLD”. beans opens the book, and the answer is right there in the print: “DIG FOR IT”. tex’s strong sense of humor brings the cartoon much needed liveliness and fun. tex was definitely a gag man more than an artist, and he has said so. not that his cartoons are badly drawn at all, but it’s clear he has a priority in humor, which is a great priority to have. porky and beans exchange gobsmacked looks.
enter the villain, creeping along furtively with his horse. he peers through his binoculars, surveying the site. pan past porky and beans scratching their heads over their instructions, past a bag of gold, past a pickaxe... the villain goes back to the bag of gold, exclaiming “ah! gold!” he fires his gun, a wonderfully strange hybrid between a gun, a fishing rod, and a grappling hook. as he fires, a lasso extends down to the gulch, tying conveniently around the bag of loot. the villain reels in his catch—some great added detail as he struggles, as if fighting a big one, and even scooping it up in a net.
porky and beans spot the bandit. porky stutters “if you get that bag for me, you can have my daughter.” beans is delighted and eagerly shakes his hand—it’s a deal. he jumps into porky’s car and rides off, winding up the twists and turns of the mountain as the bandit makes off with his gold. visions of grandeur fill the bandits head as he imagines a long, fanciful, costly limo, a driver touting him around as he chuffs on a fat cigar, donning expensive clothes.
his fantasy is interrupted by gunfire. beans wields duel pistols, firing back and forth at the bandit. bullets reduce the bandit’s hats to shreds, the hat a shadow of its former self as it plops back on the villain’s big head. great contrast. beans continued his fire, shooting a giant hole in the bandit’s pants. a makeshift buttflap falls open, revealing a giant tin pan covering the bandit’s ass for protection. bullets ricochet off the pan, much to the delight of the bandit.
frustrated, beans opts for a rifle instead. a gunfight ensues, and tex avery’s need for speed begins to break out. it’ll climax soon, but tex’s strong point in his cartoons is definitely speed and timing. he can drag out gags or make them ensue in a blink, so much so that those scenes leave you breathless and exhilarated. some great examples that we’ll see are in this, the village smithy, and porky the wrestler. the bandit slings his guns back at beans, his arms whirling around at impossible speeds, so much so that he turns into a literal blur, rising and falling back on his horse.
beans ducks, retaliating. the force of his fire is so strong that his car is propelled back multiple feet with each shot. however, trouble boils when his car stalls out. empty. beans pours a jug of moonshine directly into the engine (instead of the gas tank), and the car explodes to life—parallel to the same scene in you don’t know what you’re doin’! but on steroids. the car turns into a giant blur, stretching out to vaguely resemble a race car. with amazing force, the car barrels into the villain, who is thrown into the air with ease. this is where tex’s speed is magnified and used to a great amount of potential, a potential we haven’t seen yet in a cartoon. it’s exhilarating and breathless, and above all, believable. you feel like you’re right there with them, a must see scene.
the car defies gravity as it speeds along the walls of the caverns, a lovely angle of the car headed straight towards the camera (that would be recycled in one of tex’s cartoons at mgm, dumb-hounded). beans now barrels whence he came, knocking into the villain once more. instead of being propelled into the air, the bandit is dragged into the car, reduced to nothing but a mere blur. around another curve they speed, the loose bag of gold that was thrown into the air with the bandit now landing in the car.
a forlorn porky paces anxiously, awaiting the return of his beloved gold. he, too, is wiped into the chase, again reduced to a mere blur as he falls into the car. the car zips into town, right past kitty, who sweeps outside her house. she’s spun around like a top as the shanghaied racecar whirls past.
finally, the car screeches to a halt. the villain is slumped over inside the car, whereas porky and beans are unharmed. kitty reunites with porky, who lifts her up lovingly. he places her down in front of beans. “well, here’s my daughter!” beans graciously accepts kitty’s hand as he thrusts the bag into porky’s hands, replying “and here’s your gold!”
a lovely twist as porky stutters “gold be derned! that’s my lunch!” sure enough, he stuffs his hands inside the bag and lifts out a giant towering sandwich, identical to the one he scarfed down at the beginning of the cartoon. he gobbles it up with ease, giving a contented smile as we iris out.
whether you love this cartoon or hate it, it’s historical significance can’t be denied. this and i haven’t got a hat are probably the most important cartoons we’ve seen thus far, and the two, in my opinion, rely on each other for success. had friz not created porky, who knows what would have happened in this cartoon. same goes the opposite way. had tex not come aboard and used porky in a suitable role, porky may have continued to exist in cameos, but how far would looney tunes have gotten before inevitably getting canned?
i personally love this cartoon, and is probably my favorite one so far. tex avery was such a pivotal element to the success of looney tunes. albeit this isn’t his most polished work (and the blatant racism with the chinese twins and the blackface gag can’t be overlooked or dismissed), this cartoon is fun, exhilarating, and happy. tex’s sense of humor is on point, and his timing/speed is impeccable. it leaves you wanting more, almost as if you aren’t satisfied. the whole cartoon revolving around porky reuniting with his giant sandwich is another plus. beans is endearing, though bland in personality. kitty is equally endearing, her breathless excitement indescribably amusing and contagious. porky is also amusing, but hardly endearing—but, again, second cartoon, still trying to figure things out. without comparing his appearance here to other cartoons (which is very difficult to do), he fits just fine as the bumbling comic relief character.
this is a major turning point in the world of looney tunes. thanks to tex, cartoons are going to get snappier, funnier, wittier. i may be biased since he’s one of my favorite directors, but it’s hard to argue with, especially since this is the man who made daffy, elmer, bugs. if anything else, i definitely recommend this for historical significance. aside from that, it’s fun, happy, energizing, and a great relief to the drab cartoons we’ve been seeing thus far (though friz deserves much more credit than he gets for his merrie melodies). obviously, express discretion at the racist gag of the chinese twins/blackface—they aren’t too exhausted, but definitely prominent enough to constitute a warning. this is a cartoon worth watching.

2019.
축하해요 to Bong Joon-ho and the Parasite crew on taking the highest-rated spot in our 2019 Year in Review. Congratulations also to Anthony and Joe Russo and the entire Marvel team on Avengers: Endgame finishing the year as the Most Popular film.
“I find it beautiful that people would express their feelings and put their heart and their mind into cinema” —Céline Sciamma on Letterboxd reactions to Portrait of Lady on Fire.
The Letterboxd Year in Review is presented by NEON.
The 2019 Letterboxd Year in Review is out, and, as voted by you, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women are the three highest rated films of the year, while the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Endgame is the year’s most popular film. Feel free to dive in, then come back here for some insights and behind-the-scenes tid-bits:
The 2019 Letterboxd Year in Review
Pro tip: on devices with keyboards, we recommend navigating via the up/down arrow keys for the most satisfying experience.
Right out of the gate, we could tell Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire were going to have an impact this year—we picked them in our top 10 Cannes premieres of 2019, but we couldn’t have predicted that Parasite would topple The Godfather’s long-standing position as the highest-rated film on Letterboxd. An epic achievement. As director Bong told us at TIFF when we revealed he was on track to have the highest rated film: “I’m so happy with that. All the cinephiles, the film geeks. Me, also the cinephile, so I’m very happy with that news. Thank you!”
Céline Sciamma was also touched by the attention that Letterboxd members have paid to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which had a limited US release in December and gets a wider run in February. “I’m paying a lot of attention about what’s going on around the film, what is being said,” she told us. “I’m really looking at things, so I’ve seen a lot of Letterboxd”—she sees you!—“and the fact that people who were touched by the film would take the time to write about it, I think it’s something really beautiful because, especially with this film, which is about how love is an education to art—because art consoles from love or makes us greater lovers—I find it beautiful that people would express their feelings and put their heart and their mind into cinema.”
Getting to the heart of why we created Letterboxd, Sciamma concluded: “That’s the beauty of this digital era. As a young cinephile there was no internet, and I remember writing, just only for myself in little diaries about film. And so I found it really, really important.”
The two highest-rated films of the year are both distributed in the US by NEON, who we are proud to have on board as an official presenting partner for the 2019 Year in Review. NEON’s manager of acquisitions, Mason Speta, says: “The Letterboxd community is home to the most committed and passionate cinephiles, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be recognized by the people who love movies as much as we do.”
In that same Cannes piece, we highlighted just one documentary, For Sama. The heartbreaking first-hand account of life as a young mother in Aleppo has gone on to become our Highest Rated Documentary of 2019. “It really means a lot to us,” director Waad al-Kateab told us. Her co-director Edward Watts added: “To know that it’s reaching so many people is such good news. The dream was always that the film would reach so many people and they would come in contact with this incredible story, so it’s fantastic to hear that people have seen it, and that they like it!”
The Lighthouse also appeared on our Cannes list; it finishes the year as our Highest Rated Horror (read our Q&A with writer-director Robert Eggers here). Quentin Tarantino is 2019’s Most Watched Director, after thousands of you revisited his back catalog in anticipation of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
A global scan of the 50 Highest Rated Narrative Features favors the US, with 20 films on the list, but the remaining films come from far and wide: Korea, France, China, Brazil, India, Japan, Spain, Germany, Colombia (twice), Turkey, Sweden, Romania, Italy, Mexico, Austria, Iceland, and a couple set in the Arctic Circle and outer space.
We’re very pleased to see, in the highest rated category, that two of the top three directors are women—Céline Sciamma and Greta Gerwig. The only other time a woman has featured in the top three in our history of Years in Review was in 2017, when Gerwig’s Lady Bird took the second spot. Overall, ten women directors feature on the top 50 narrative films list, down one from 2018’s record of 11. On the other hand, ten women directors feature among the 20 highest rated documentaries, with Waad al-Kateab and Beyoncé Knowles in the first and second spots. These are the ten highest rated films by women directors in 2019, and here are the 10 most popular.
Best of the decade
Also included in this year’s review is an extensive selection of 2010s best-of-decade lists, covering narrative, non-fiction, directors, directorial debuts, action/adventure, animation, sci-fi, comedy, comic/manga adaptations, horror, romance, war, mini-series, comedy specials and underrated films of the decade.
There’s so much to explore, so that’s it for now, but the goods keep coming! Look out for interviews with the directors of For Sama and Portrait of a Lady on Fire in the next few weeks. We’d love to hear your observations in the list comments, and to know what you’re anticipating most in 2020.
A few important thank yous: to NEON for partnering with us, to Joseph Qiu for 2019’s beautiful illustration, to Jack Moulton for data deep-dives and list-keeping, and to all the filmmakers for continuing to inspire us. And to all of you: thanks for another excellent year. As Céline says, art makes us greater lovers!

The Hills Have Eyes has become a cult classic of the American horror film genre, as well as an important part of the cannibal studies canon. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Wes Craven’s directorial debut was The Last House on the Left (1972), an American version of Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring (Swedish: Jungfrukällan), a movie that shocked (at least in 1960) with its themes of rape, torture and murder. Craven became known as a “Master of Horror”, and went on to make such classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Scream (1996).
Other influences on this film include John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Like The Last House on the Left before it, the film also drew influence from the work of European masters such as François Truffaut and Luis Buñuel.
Wes Craven liked to find inspiration in the classics, and there’s nothing wrong with that. They say there are only seven or so archetypal stories in literature, and all the others are variations on a theme. So, The Hills Have Eyes is based on the legend of cannibal Sawney Bean, a story that Craven saw as illustrating the fine line between civilized and savage. Bean was believed (and how do we ever sift the fiction from the fact in cannibal stories?) to be the patriarch of a 48-person incestuous Scottish clan which murdered and cannibalised more than one thousand men, women and children in the 16th century. When the King and his soldiers finally caught up with the family, according to the Complete Newgate Calendar,
“The men had their hands and legs severed from their bodies; by which amputations they bled to death in some hours. The wife, daughters and grandchildren, having been made spectators of this just punishment inflicted on the men, were afterwards burnt to death in three several fires.”
Just like the Sawney Bean legend, the violence of the cannibal family in this film is matched by the ferocity of their victims. Unlike Texas Chain Saw, where escape by the “final girl” is victory enough, this movie ends with the “last boy” (as it were) savagely stabbing the last cannibal, and continuing to do so long after he is dead, watched by the “final girl” who is an abused and therefore redeemable member of the cannibal clan. The end of the film is not a fade to black but a fade to red.
Craven saw this treatment of the Bean clan by supposedly civilised people as paralleling the clan’s own savagery, and illustrated the point graphically in this film.
Chain Saw and Hills showed a slice of American life that doesn’t usually make it on to the screen – the “flyover states” where industry and agriculture have closed up shop, and the air force use the “empty” desert for nuclear testing. The remnants of the population, mutated by the radiation (the gas station dude’s baby, who became the cannibal patriarch, was at birth “twenty pounds and hairy as a monkey”), survive in the economic wasteland by doing whatever they can. In Hills, as in Chain Saw, they do it by capturing “civilised” folk who blunder into their killing fields. The survivors of the American Dream have become depraved cannibals, not just eating their victims, but first raping and tormenting them. In both movies, there is what, in his excellent review, Bloody Disgusting’s Zachary Paul called an archetypal “gas station of doom”, a final point of no return. They, and you the viewer, have been warned.
1
As a classic horror film, it is actually quite dull in large sections. This is not a fault of the production so much as the budget: the whole thing was made for peanuts and shot on 16mm film, on cameras that were borrowed from a Californian pornographer. There was not a lot of spare cash for gore, so the episodes of violence are extreme, but short. The sudden jolts of music make up for the missing build-ups.
The symbolism of the film is unsubtle. The cannibals are freaks and monsters, although remarkably technology-savvy:
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The family of victims are the tough patriarch, a former cop, who cannot save them and is crucified by the cannibals, the virgin daughter who is raped by them, and a baby who is stolen and almost (until they changed the script) eaten (they describe her as “a young Thanksgiving turkey”).
But by the end, both families have descended into mindless brutality.
A sequel was made by Craven in 1984 called The Hills Have Eyes Part II. Although the villains were allegedly cannibals, there is no cannibalism in it, so I won’t be wasting our time on it in this blog, particularly as it managed a score of ZERO on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite a feat.
Both films were remade in 2006 and 2007, and we’ll get to those, eventually.
The Hills Have Eyes was part of the “new wave” of horror that arose in the 1970s. Other notable directors who made up this new wave were Tobe Hooper, George Romero, David Cronenberg, John Carpenter and Brian De Palma. Horror had moved away from outsiders (monsters, aliens, vampires, etc) to humans, usually the victims of pervasive social dysfunction and degeneracy. Cannibalism was getting closer to where we live – our species. Later films would move the cannibal into our cities, and then finally into our homes.
Our voracious appetites continue to turn inward.
“The lucky ones died first” THE HILLS HAVE EYES The Hills Have Eyes has become a cult classic of the American horror film genre, as well as an important part of the cannibal studies canon.
