Intimate Life
Nan Goldin’s photography is an excellent example of capturing images of intimate spaces. Like the beginning of Cotton’s text suggests, Goldin’s work presents narratives of domestic and intimate life, simply documenting her chosen family and friends in their natural space.
Tumblr media
There is something indescribable about her work, it feels both eminent and unprofessional at the same time. Her subjects are relaxed in their familiar spaces. It’s nostalgic and childish, but not dishonorable to her subjects. Catching them in moments unseen by others is beautiful, and crucial to building the connection she has. The colored film emphasizes the connection the viewer feels when viewing her work. If done in black and white, the subjects would feel far away and disconnected. However the color makes the images appear as though they could be in one’s own family scrapbook.
Tumblr media
Cotton explains that one of the reasons for Goldin’s justification for the “urgency with which she photographs what is emotionally significant to her” (Cotton) is due to her sister’s suicide when Goldin was just a child. She photographs in a way that allows her to hold onto her own history. Goldin’s work ended up being not only a proper representation of intimate and narrative photography, but an enduring and authentic look into the lives of the LGBT community in the 70s and 80s. Goldin’s openness about her past and current life add context to her work, making her images personal to view however not feeling invasive or voyeuristic with her subjects. Her work is very essentially “intimate life”.

Tomart’s Price Guide to Worldwide STAR WARS Collectibles. By Stephen J. Sansweet & T.N. Tumbusch. This was my mid 90s bible. My holy book. I’ve run over the pages of it again and again and again. Looking and dreaming of getting some of those great Star Wars collectibles. There was no internet with all of the offers and info as today. You had to search and learn and dream with a “simple” book. Great times! P.S. I’ve met Steve Sansweet on one of the few German Star Wars conventions some time in the 90s where he signed my book. Happy to still own it until today! Nikki Lee “Projects” and “Parts and Scenes”
Adelae Tumbusch - mini research paper
http://www.vsf.la/nikki-s-lee-parts-and-scenes/
(a collection of some of Nikki Lee’s photographs if anyone is interested)
Nikki Lee’s series “Projects” (1997-2001) is one of her most well known works, partly due to the controversy that arose. The series features Lee entering and “experiencing” a featured community for a few months, living as they do, dressing and acting as they do, and photographing herself in these spaces with these people. Many have called the collection borderline offensive while many others defend her work. The works include titles such as The Hip Hop Project, The Hispanic Project, and even The Ohio Project. Though most of them are not race related, the few that are gained the most attention and backlash, she stepped over the line into brown face to invest herself into these groups. Various critics viewed her depictions of these groups as stereotypical. The idea behind the project is that she immersed herself in the culture of the people and space, gaining understanding of and for the people she is depicting.

The Skateboarders Project, 2000
Lee’s most recent series “Parts and Scenes” (2002–2005) is much different than the preceding series. The collection is a commentary on the role and representation of women in art and society. The photos in the first part of the series, Parts, depict a couple, with the man’s side of the photograph cut out (indicated by the incomplete white border) forcing the viewer’s focus to the woman. The viewer gets to experience her emotions, what is she doing, what is she wearing? All of the focus is on her now, Lee’s expressions and mannerisms hinting at what she’s thinking or feeling in the photo while leaving the initial impression up to the viewer. The photographs, compared to “Projects”, are very intimate. The grain and colored filters indicate the passing of time for the relationship between the two. With the man missing everything about Lee is detailed and clear, it’s interesting to view her as an outsider to the couple. The second part of the series, Scenes, is a collection of videos rather than photographs. The videos depict a man and a woman in a private space, such as a car or under a street light, holding each other and kissing. Though there aren’t many things more intimate than that, the viewer doesn’t feel as deep a connection with the two as they do in Parts. Rather, it feels almost voyeuristic to watch and gaze at this couple as they share this moment together.

Part (14), 2002
Tumblr media
Part (35), 2003
I think these works have very different ideas with similar end goals. When comparing the two, the first thing that comes to mind is Nikki Lee can become anyone. In that she takes on multiple roles across different series, she is both the subject and the person behind the camera. She is a young woman, in love, a girlfriend. She is an exotic dancer, and a yuppie. Lee works both hard and effortlessly to blend into the role she wants to depict on camera. In my own opinion, I like “Parts and Scenes” more than “Projects”, and specifically Parts. I can relate to the want and need for the focus to be on you and your emotions (the woman in the relationship) and sometimes feeling overshadowed by your male counterpart. Out of the two series I believe it’s my favorite. Projects is a great work too, however I can’t speak for the groups who she depicted as there are people who disagree with her message (and I am not apart of those groups). From an artistic standpoint, it’s an intriguing project that took time and dedication, with an intriguing and unique outcome. The same goes for “Parts and Scenes”, being a bit more intimate and almost beautiful in their presentation. I probably relate to Parts more, and I think that was her intention with the “Projects” series. Though misunderstood, the idea was to represent people different from her and allow themselves to feel related to, and understood.

Next to Normal
This series documents a transition from the city back home. I was inspired by the time capsule assignment, the idea of capturing the world as it is right now, as a time we cannot come back to. After such an intense and unprecedented year, I wanted to document the normality and tranquility of the holidays (under different circumstances) and portray the strangeness of coming home from college for the first time in my life. Capturing the foreign images of New York City with the inside of my home and portraits of the people and places I love being themselves. These images do not portray the dysfunction of my family, rather the rare moments of tranquility and nostalgia. I’ve never worked with colored film before, which only made the project more exciting and different. To me, the collection is similar to a scrapbook of memories, showcasing pleasant and joyful moments of the last moments in 2020.

New Normal
Right now it feels as though America is fighting two pandemics. As we normalize avoiding the virus and restricting our movement to keep ourselves and strangers safe, tensions rise as the government faces systemic racism as well as an election on the horizon. When I look around today, I see masks, people six feet apart, and hope to return to normality. However I also see police, anger and protest, a demand for change. Through my time capsule I wanted to capture the words and symbols of our normal today and now, because they will be entirely unique to this year into the future. When I look around I am reminded that we will never go back to normal, because 2020 is the year of change.

The Dolls Test - unknown photographer
“In looking at this snapshot, I find it a real-life, personal illustration of this test. I wonder now when I became aware of racial identification in toys.”
I wanted to look at a picture from the dolls test mentioned in the reading. In asking children “Give me the doll that looks nice” they reached for the white doll rather than the one with their own skin tone. Willis comments on this, as she was taught racial pride as a child and therefore preferred dolls with her own skin tone, while her sister insisted on having a white one. The girls had different internal ideas about their identities, resulting in them favoring one skin over the other. It’s interesting that even thought they are sisters, living together with similar experiences, that as children they were aware of their race differently.

Diptych
Photograph 1: Jeffrey Henson Scales, Harlem NY
Photograph 2: Adelae Tumbusch, Austin TX
Scales’ photographs resonated with me as they depict the day to day life of a creator in quarantine. While he can’t be out fighting for his loved ones due to the pandemic, he can use his time to do what he does best, create. I think this is relatable to many people who found themselves stuck inside this year. For me, the best thing I could do to fight the loneliness and hopelessness was create things. It’s a rare opportunity that we have this much time to ourselves. Scales took advantage of that time to be inspired, I tried to do the same.
“... for now, while I’m still quarantined at home in Harlem, surrounded by my loved ones, my history, my music and my inspirations, I’ll continue to do what I can, from here.” - Jeffrey Henson Scales
