Okay soo... I've never participated in a DTIYS before but when @the-other-soup was hosting one for their follower milestone. Well I got excited as all fuck.

This was a lot of fun as I normally don't draw lacey lingerie. I didn't want to pressure myself to much and just had fun with it.

I was complaining that I didn't have anything to get me excited about Lan Xichen x Jiang Cheng right? GOD TUMBLR HAVE ANSWER MY PRAY! GOD HAVE ANSWER.

I found this post from 2022 about JC a food critic and LXC a chef, I'll leave the link here.

It so happens that I have friends in the restaurant business (a friend of mine is the chef of a restaurant for 5 years) and I criticized his recipes in the first years of his career because i have developed a very fine palate. Also being Italian my entire culture revolves around food, i know at least seven different ways to roll out handmade pasta (I also count the various Italian and Asian grannies, who teach me their secrets) .

I read this post and I get emotional and I said/commented in the hope that no one had their hands up (I don't like taking ideas that others have already done out for respect) and when he said "I haven't seen anything like this out there yet, you can do it!". I JUMPED OUT.

I think I'll use something my grandmother said (who always found an excuse to make me warm vanilla cookies) "Food is not just quality is also feeling… do you know that to say I love you to your grandfather every day i made him ginger biscuits with brown sugar on top? Even if I didn't like it i ate them with him, alone to see him happy?"

LXC works hard for every dish he makes and JC only gives him 4.5/5 stars every time, and an affront to his cooking and his mother's recipes!!

So I would say that with a good base of angst and fun and a pinch of love that is worked with a little desire and tension, with another pinch of growth relationship… and a piece of conflicting feelings and incompression. May it be a perfect recipe to break a dish! + I foresee a serving of 20/30 dishes for this (this one waited years for this. YEARS. I feel entitled to make it last as long as possible!!!!)

In the meantime, I thank you for giving me permission to use your idea little star, I will treat this rare pearl well (because is absurd that someone hasn't done it yet!! ABSURD!!) You are not obliged to follow it but if did, it is much appreciated! !!🫂🫂🫂

My brain has been hiding under a rock...

.... and it refuses to come out and let me enjoy anything.

As such I have had nothing to say and nothing to post about. DAMN YOU DEPRESSED BRAIN! I finally created a tumblr so I could share my thoughts and scream at others about my drama addiction and now you make me hit a drama slump. How dare you....

ANYWAY, I haven’t been able to keep up with anything as of late and my progress with watching dramas is slow as fuck. I’m still trying to finish Vigilantes in masks that I started like 3 months ago or somethin. 

But, since I can’t focus on anything I started in the last 3 months I’ve managed to side track into Jdramas. 

One because they tend to be much smaller series. 8 episodes or so. This is much less overwhelming than like the 40/60 something I’m used to. 

Two because it’s something new. Lots of Kdramas and Cdramas have the same vibe. Which isn’t a bad thing but it’s not catching the attention of depressed katacomb brain that craves new things because if we can’t find something new then automatically I’m somehow wasting my life and have no value or some shiz... heeeee...

So some recommendations if anyone wants to watch some Jdramas. (Assuming you read this far. If you did congrats. I love you for it.)

Recently I’ve watched, by way of recommendation or just seeing it in the recents of the drama7seas:

- Soroban Samurai

The story of a samurai who doubles as an accountant. Yes, an accountant. He’s pretty darn cool and he’s also something of a detective too. I’m pretty sure his role in life is basically a jack of all trades. The production leaves something to be desired in quality but it’s a wonderful story and I stayed for the characters. There’s 9 episodes and each story line is independent of each other told over the span of 3 episodes. So, 9 episodes = 3 storylines that have almost nothing to do with each other aside from the main character and a few side characters. If you want an over reaching storyline then this does not have one. But, I really enjoyed it cause it was simple and I have a thing for detectives. Not much for whump either. But It’s still a fun drama for the side lines.

- Shikaku Tantei Higurashi Tabito

More detectivish MCs. NOW this is a drama everyone should watch!! It has a movie (Which should be watched first but really only gives some character introductions, it’s not hugelly important to story line so you could skip it if you wished.) and a 9 episode series. The series is where it’s at tho! SOoo much whump and amazing found family and angst. I love the premise of this series. It was absolutely fascinating. I’ve always loved series that explore the different ways people with unique disabilities see the regular world or that the world appears differently to everyone in general. The MC was amazing. I loved him and his intensity but also goofy and traumatised self. The actor did any amazing job with this character. From the way he swayed during conversations while trying to keep peoples lips in view so he could read them since he’s deaf. It’s like they never forgot that he only had the sense of sight, literally nothing else. From the way he walked to the things he ate. it was all very well done. 10/10 would recommend.

And lastly, Meiji Kaika: Shinjuro Tanteicho

Oh look, another detective MC. Is anyone surprised? Not me. 

Though dunno if I recommend this one yet since I’ve only seen the first ep but I’ve been waiting for all 8 eps to be subbed and now they are. So, Imma binge this. Drama7seas says 2020 but I’m thinking not from the production. It looks hella old but I don’t pretend to know how film develops in Japan or if this is specific style or whatnot but I really like the rustic vibe to it. MC looks super cooky too and I like it.

What is he wearing around his neck? Anyone know????? Genuinely curious about this fashion choice. It’s not like most ties I’ve seen in historical type dramas.

Who am I?

I am Cookie, a ciswoman, born in 1997, living in Belgium, INFJ.

When did I start writing fanfiction?

Probably in 2002. I’ve always liked reading books and writing little stories was already a hobby of mine as a kid. I’ve had a pc on my room ever since I was about 5 years old and I used to be able to spend hours just playing patience or -you guessed it- write stories in word (remember Clippy?). Back then it was mostly Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King.

I stopped for a few years and picked it up again around 2010, this time while knowingly watching anime. It all started out with Naruto and Vampire Knight. I used to publish some of my works (reader inserts and oc content) from about 2012 to 2014, but let’s not talk about the quality of my work back then, lol.

When did I start this blog?

My first work was posted on Tumblr on 21/07/2020.

What’s the story behind my url?

I’m horribly unoriginal with usernames and I always pick the same things. Usually this is easier because they can always find me pretty quick. For Tumblr though, I didn’t want people to find me (except if I told them), so I needed something new. But like I said, I’m horribly unoriginal. So I looked around in my room, and my eyes were drawn to my Hannibal book. Now Hannibal didn’t sound good, but I’ve always loved the sound of ‘silence of the lambs’. And I just happened to be craving cookies at the time. And thus, silenceofthecookies was born. Before I turned this into a proper writing blog, my bio used to be ‘Why are the cookies silent? Because I ate them’.

Did I make my own theme? 

Nope! I have very little knowledge of html. My lovely friend @blueflamebimbo made it for me. She came up with the whole idea as well, since I’m horribly unoriginal and had no idea what I wanted for a theme.

What is my favourite genre to write?

Angst is definitely my favourite, good end or bad. From 2016 until summer 2020 (the period where I didn’t publish any of my writings) I wrote nothing but angst. It’s just something so easy for me to write and I feel a sense of joy when I’m able to move people with my writing.

That being said, I do love writing most things. It’s nice to have a bit of variety.

Can you thirst with me? 

Sure! Feel free to talk to me about your favourite characters and what you love about them. I may get a little shy saying explicit things myself though, but I can definitely bark for certain characters with you!

What's the best concert you've been to, if you've been? Jonas Brothers and Green Day.

What's the funniest screenname you've ever seen? I’ve been on the internet since I was like 9 years old, I’ve come across many.

Is there an animal you like that most people don't? I don’t think so. Most people don’t seem to dislike giraffes, which are my favorite animal. <<< Same. And doggos.

Is there an animal that you think is overrated in terms of how it's liked? No.

Is there a time period you think is underrated? I’d love to bring the 90′s back, that’s all. <<< I’m in.

What are your three favorite books and why? I’m gonna give you my three current favorite artists instead: AJ Rivers, Willow Rose, and Mary Stone. They’re murder mystery and psychological thriller authors with tons of books and I’ve really enjoyed the many I’ve read from each of them.

What about authors? ^^^ Do you have any likes you wouldn't tell someone until you got to know them? Hmm. I think things would just come up over time, not because I’m waiting to tell them.

What are your opinions on the media? There’s the good and bad. It can be pretty brutal and problematic, for sure.

What is your favorite piece of technology that you own? My laptop and phone.

What's a piece of technology you'd like to own? I have what I want at the moment. 

Are you afraid of technology developing to where we're too reliant on it? Oh, we’re waaaay past that point.

Does it bother you when people do things to fit in with a certain crowd? When they’re doing problematic things. 

Hot or cold? I’d much rather be cold. I like being wrapped up in a blanket, wearing hoodies/sweatshirts, and drinking hot coffee. Being hot is just miserable.  Do you think that Bzoink should extent the character amount for questions? I don’t use Bzoink.

Do you have a favorite combination of complimentary colors? A lot of colors look nice together.

Do you know why all the young people who have nice cars always look grumpy? I don’t think I’ve noticed that.

What's your favorite odd ice cream flavor? I don’t like any odd flavors. What’s with you and odd stuff?

Where do you like to get your ice cream? I’m not a big ice cream person, but the store is fine, ha. It was nice going somewhere like Cold Stone or something as well, though. I haven’t had ice cream in years, though.

What's your opinion on stereotypes/labels? Labels can be useful in some cases.

Do you believe that history repeats itself? Absolutely. There’s proof of that.

Would you rather learn from your mistakes or just undo them? Ha, it’d be nice to be able to undo them.

What was the most interesting class you had in school? I always enjoyed English. And then of course I found a lot of my psych classes interesting. Do you write? If so, what? Nope.

Do you think that the quality of TV shows is going down? No, there’s so many good shows.

Do you have a favorite culture? Learning about different cultures is interesting. What was a story you heard as a child that really affected you? Hmm.

Who was your favorite grade-school teacher and why? Mr. McG, my 4th and then 8th grade teacher. He was everyone’s favorite. He made learning so much fun and really cared about his students.

Shipping Post Game

I haven’t been on tumblr much this week so I have absolutely no idea who’s done this and who hasn’t. Because of that, I won’t tag anybody, but if you’re reading this and you’d like to play, go for it and satisfy my nosiness. 

Top three ships

Weeeeell, I’m not really a shipper. Yes, I have ships, and often one ship at a time, but I’m really more a One True Character rather than a One True Pairing sort of girl. This has led me down some rabbit holes to some unexpected places at times. I could start with a ship from my first writing fandom. Or I could start with HP, where I was responsible for not just writing multiple ships myself, but for a lot of other people writing all sorts of (sometimes very) strange pairings too, thanks to a fest I ran in the early 2000s. But it’s probably easier to just talk about the three ships that I’ve written the most words about since those days. (Also, that means that I DON’T have to include Lewis/Hathaway, which has recently  been completely ruined for me by a certain asshat actor who used to play a character whose name begins with H.)

1) John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, aka McKay/Sheppard, aka mcshep

In 2005, I went to America to attend an HP con in Salem, Massachusetts, with a bunch of online friends, and also to travel to some other places and meet some other online friends. In the course of my travels, I watched several episodes of Stargate Atlantis, and several people tried VERY hard to lure me into the fandom. The episodes they showed me had a definite McKay emphasis, as did the fic that ended up loaded onto my ipaq (a small hand-held device that has long been an historical relic - this was a LONG time ago) for consuming on the 14 hour flight back over the Pacific. 

There was a lot of McKay focus in the early days of the fandom. The emphasis changed over time, but right then people were all McKay, all the time. The problem was that while I liked everything in the fandom addiction package that I’d been given a lot, I kept looking past McKay and going: but what about THAT guy? (See above re One True Character.) So when I got home, I ordered the pilot episode on DVD (again, this was a LONG time ago) and once it arrived, I think I watched it seven times in three days? Something like that. And all because of THAT guy.

And yes, in time, I did grow to appreciate Rodney McKay and the very specific dynamic he had with John Sheppard. I read an awful lot of fanfic over the next five-ish years - some of it very, very good; some of it very, very cracky, because that fandom was ALL ABOUT THE CRACK (my favourite was the one where Rodney was a unicorn and John was a rainbow, but the one where one of them was a table lamp was also pretty memorable, or where John was a blue tulip and Rodney was a sunflower, or where they were both girl scout cookies.... Well, you get the idea)... I forget where that sentence was going. 

Anyway, I read a lot, and I wrote quite a bit, though nothing like as much as I wanted to, thanks to RL intruding a lot in not very pleasant ways. I think I came pretty close to capturing John Sheppard the way I wanted to in my final SGA story, Home, which I wrote in 2010 and was set post-series, but he always had an elusive quality, and the inside of his head was a fascinating, if frustrating, place to be. People in SGA fandom were fond of describing the characters as being from the Island of Misfit Toys (particularly in comparison to their counterparts on SG-1), and I think that aspect was what made me enjoy Sheppard so much. On the surface, he looked like your typical utterly boring, good looking, vaguely renegade US military leading man, but underneath he was just SUCH an individual. 

If I had to choose a single favourite character from a fandom I’m no longer actively involved in, that character would still be John Sheppard.

2) Belle/Rumpelstiltskin|Mr Gold aka rumbelle

I was also lured into this fandom, though it was a bit more accidental than SGA. Nym, who is one of my oldest fannish friends (as in, has been my fannish friend for a very long time - though we’re both no longer as young as we once were) has been a HUGE Robert Carlyle fan for many years, so when he was cast as Mr Gold aka Rumpelstiltskin in Once Upon a Time, of course she started watching. And then I started watching so that I could discuss it with her, and THEN she started writing this thing, and of course I beta-ed for her, and Rumple really sort of fascinated me quite a lot (see above re One True Character) and then I started writing too. I hadn’t written het in quite a few years at that point, apart from a single T-rated Yuletide fic, but pairing Rumple with anyone but Belle required getting very convoluted with the canon, and their canon relationship did have plenty to explore so...

I wound up writing quite a few stories over the next few years, including several that I’m still quite proud of, so in that respect I’m glad Nym dragged me into that fandom with her. I’m pretty sure this was the first time I wrote, or was even really interested in, a canon pairing. There were aspects of that that I REALLY didn’t enjoy, including that the two characters whose relationship I was most interested in were so much (more) at the mercy of the showrunners. I also wasn’t always thrilled about the (extremely specific) expectations that some groups of fans had about what the canon should deliver for their favoured pairing, rather than accepting that that’s what fanfic is for. I wound up swearing that I’d never get into a canon pairing again.

Yeah, well.

3) Jaime/Brienne, Jaime x Brienne, braime...

Those of you who’ve been following me awhile have probably heard this before, so feel free to skip, but for anyone who’s fairly new...

I stopped writing fanfic in mid-2015, and apart from a brief burst of activity in late 2016-mid 2017, I continued not to write. By the time 2019 rolled around, I thought it pretty likely that I wouldn’t write fanfic again. Then the final season of Game of Thrones happened.

Jaime Lannister has been my favourite character since I read A Storm of Swords when it was first published twenty years ago. It’s a bit of an understatement to say that I wasn’t exactly pleased with how the show ended his story arc. And yes, I know what I just said above about fans having too-specific expectations, but there’s quite a bit of middle ground between fans expecting too much from a show and a show spectacularly under-delivering.

I started writing this pairing the day after the final episode aired, because I couldn’t NOT write, and I pretty much haven’t stopped since. I think my word tally is somewhere around the 240k mark atm.

Last song I listened to:

Journey of the Sorcerer by the Eagles, because the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy came up in the conversation when I was at @undun-duz‘s place tonight, and of course I immediately got this earworm.

Last movie I watched:

The Aeronauts - because watching Eddie Redmayne suffering from hypoxia and almost freezing to death in a balloon is more entertaining than you might think.

Dress in the Age of Jane Austen by Hilary Davidson, WAY too many car reviews as I wait for the payout from the insurance company for our poor, dead car, and waiting on False Value by Ben Aaronovitch, the next Rivers of London novel, which is due out later this month.

Some cheesecake that D insisted on getting for dessert. I really should know better than to leave those choices up to him. If I ask him to “get a cake” he inevitably returns with a cheesecake.

Shah Talks Psy - Eating disorders

My last post brought out the pro-ana side of tumblr.

Huh, what part of my post made anyone think I was pro-ana?

Like NO!

Okay, my peeps. I am a therapist. My job is to deal with eating disorders.

So long rant ahead.

Warning: This may offend you.

I am a therapist, and as part of my job I must deal with people with eating disorders. I, on a personal level, also suffer from eating disorders, namely a food addiction and emotional binge eating. 

As someone with experience on this spectrum of the food/weight related psychological issues, can say, anyone who is pro-eating disorders is a danger to any vulnerable person struggling with them. Why? Because getting off an eating disorder requires a lot of work, a lot of self-control, and a lot of motivational work. Most people who suffer these issues have other underlying issues that make it even harder. In my personal case, both my depression, my anxiety and my autism make me want to eat, and when I start eating it requires a lot of motivation to stop. So, there is a lot of motivational and control work to be done with someone who suffers from an Eating Disorder.

For a matter of fact, Eating Disorders cause a lot of distress. Again, on my personal case, when I am craving, and I crave hard, I start having full blown anxiety attacks because I want to eat, while the rational side of my brain is going: 

“Bitch! You just ate like five minutes ago a full meal. Wait three more hours!”

And I can tell you, those three hours are complete torture. Not because I am hungry, because I am not. I have the privilege of saying I haven’t felt hungry often in my whole my life. It is just my brain acting to food the same way a junky acts towards heroin.

The same happens in the opposite lane. Priving yourself of food also becomes adicting, especially when associated with the “reward” of loosing weight quickly. And these sensation, both of being satisfied momentarily by overeating, or by fasting and loosing weight, become addictive to our brains. It is breaking these addictions that we are working in the treatment Eating Disorders.

And, like with every “addiction”, it is something that can hit you like a train at any moment. 

But now, I have two movements that disturb me. On the side of thinness and weight loss we have the pro-eating disorders (pro-ana and pro-bulimia) and the side of obesity and weight gain we have the “fat acceptance” group (let’s call it what it is: pro-obesity).

I am very worried and disturbed by both the pro-ana and the pro-obesity groups. As someone still struggling with their own eating disorder, I know how it is to feel vulnerable and like you’re getting nowhere or getting back where you started and how easy it is to follow these people preaching either “love your bones” or love “your curves”. Both messages aren’t that different, they are worshipping the same ideology of maintaining an easy but dangerous habit.

Most people think eating disorders are just bulimia and anorexia and maybe diabolia (excessive/unhealthy dieting). But for a matter of fact, eating disorders also incorporate compulsive eating, binge eating and emotional eating. People rarely ever think of eating disorders as those habits that can and do lead to obesity.

There is nothing romantic, or hip, or cool, or trendy about eating disorders. I have seen both spectrums of the scale. Both being too thin or being too fat (or ifinafat, since that’s a term now ). Holding morbidly obese women such as Tess Hollyday for example, as these “fit, fat and healthy” icons of health for the pro-obesity group is actually as damaging and dangerous as it was a couple of years ago holding boney anorexic women as icons “of slim beauty”. Both cases are very dangerous and unhealthy. Are these women beautiful? I find Tess Hollyday a very beautiful woman, and most models down the runaway are very beautiful. But are they healthy? No, I am actually concerned of them. These women look like they are going to die. 

My knees, today, complain heavily, because of the weight they had to carry their whole life, the same way I believe if I had been the opposite, extremely thin, they’d still complain for the fact my muscles had nothing to work on.

So:

Eating disorders are terrible.

Eating disorders is crying because you ate a cookie.

Eating disorders is having crippling anxiety attacks because you need to binge.

Eating disorders is not trusting people when they speak about your weight. You can’t tell if the people around you are concerned about your weight, or trying to bully you (for being too fat), or trying to sabotage you (for being thin).

Eating disorders is walking down a street and feeling like you’ll die.

Eating disorders is nothing fitting you because it’s either too small or too big.

Eating disorders is not being able to enjoy food.

Eating disorders is feeling like a pig because you lost your self-control and ate everything.

Eating disorders is every doctor telling you to gain/loose weight or you’ll die and you know they’re right, but you don’t know what to do.

Eating disorders is being afraid to fall back into your disorder every day.

Eating disorders is being afraid of falling on the exact opposite extreme of it (become obese/anorexic).

Extremes are not healthy. There is not such thing as health at all sizes. There is “worth at all sizes”. You are worthy, regardless of your weight. 

But that doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and usually, extremes, are not healthy. Being chronically obese or anorexic thin are two extremes that are life-threatening. And perpetuating this “positive” message that you’re healthy at all sizes is actually endangering people’s lives.

If you are too thin your doctor asks you to gain weight, you need to gain weight. Calory intake is a must.

If you’re too fat your doctor asks you to lose weight, you need to start a calory deficit.

Diets don’t work because most internet diets aren’t a long term solution. They’re the type of diets you do three months before your wedding so you can fit that 3k dollars dress.

Also, this behaviour of “fat acceptance” and “pro-ana” actually is damaging for those who are getting off their eating disorders, getting their treatment, getting to that healthy weight, healthy food and healthy exercise and these movements actually damage us. Imagine it as a pro-depression or a pro-suicide group to survivors of suicide or survivors of depression. Like, a person is having all this hard work getting their problem treated, almost at that healthy level, and then these dummasses show up saying “oh being depressed is the new trend” and “love your depression”. This is how pro-ana and pro-obesity sounds (Dear Lord I know there is a pro-depression group, but I’m not opening that can of worms just yet).

The only solution is a long term change in food choices, what you choose to eat and at what quantity. Fats and sugars for weight gain, proteins and fibers for weight loss and when you finally reach that healthy weight, you need to find a middle ground, a balance. Proteins must be half of your dish, one quarter vegetables, the other fibers. Your food must have fat also, healthy fats like olive oil or natural butter. Proteins is what your muscles need to work.

Exercise also helps in muscle gain and both weight loss and weight gain. When I started exercising I first lost weight and then gained weight. But my fat percentage went down while my muscle percentage went up.

Finally, yes, genetics and morphology also play a large role on HOW you loose/gain weight and how easily. But if you eat very small portions of food every single day, it’s not because you ate a pizza one day that you’re going to gain the weight you need. On the same level, if you eat a lot every day, like several full meals the whole day, it’s not because you ate one salad that you’re magically going to lose the weight.

Weight loss and weight gain require consistency. Consistency in quantity and consistency in quality.

And percentage of diseases that actually influence your weight are actually small. When I was obese, I went to like 50 different doctors to find the disiese that caused my weight gain. Guess which one was it. Non.

So again, as a therapist. Stop romanticizing anorexia and obesity. These two extremes kill people and no amount of “love your self at every weight” is going to save them.

You are worth the effort to get healthy. You are worth the effort.

I am not pro-eating disorders, I am not pro-ana, pro-bulimia, pro-diabolia, pro-binge eating, pro-food/diet/exercise addiction, pro-obesity. I AM NOT any of those. 

But-

I am pro-treatment, I am pro-therapy, I am pro-health, I am pro-exercise, I am pro-selflove and I am pro-fit. 

I believe all of you are worth the effort, so stop blaming society, stop blaming yourself, and give yourself the worth, the time and the effort.

Days 8 & 9 –

Yes, I’m still alive. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice my pictures and writings didn’t post. Fortunately, Tumblr saved the pictures I wanted to share, but it dropped about half of what I wrote.

On Wednesday, our class debriefed a bit more from Davines and started working on an exercise to incorporate what we knew about the company and its sustainability goals into a marketing campaign for their new product: a single shampoo. This shampoo comes in a very minimalist bottle with a very interesting quote on the front: “I went in search/ of a bad person;/ I found none as I,/ seeing myself,/ found me the worst”, and I took this quote to heart, and channeled a Patagonia advertisement called “Don’t Buy this Jacket”. I was very proud of my original advert and got a comment from Nora later that night; both she an Vincent were enthralled at how I made the very disconnected quotation on the front connect to the marketing of the product and Davines’ own shortcomings with reaching 100% sustainability.

Later that night, we took a bus to the small town of Valdagno, home to the Marzotto Corporation and birthplace of Italia Innovation co-founder, Marco. Marco gave us a tour of the old city, and the new “Social City” constructed by Marzotto during the 1910’s-40’s. Something he noted, and admitted, was that the town and company were both able to grow during this time, despite larger economic hardship, due to providing military uniforms for European powers.

It was interesting that a company so focused on textile production built educational facilities with no connection back to the company, and that would take students into other industries. No concrete answer was ever given for this, but my personal thoughts were that Marzotto used things like the engineering and music schools to attract more high-level talent and provide worker’s families with additional extracurricular activities to boost employee morale.

The company hit its peak in the 1980s and 90s, eventually owning Lanerossi, Hugo Boss, Nova Mosilina, and Fila, though due to (I assume) infighting in the family, these brands were eventually spun off, leading to the loss of 9,000 jobs in the region. Today, the small garment factory and textile factory only employ roughly 1,000 people, though we learned about 300 of those will be shifting to part-time work. Despite this, at a town hall on economic and social innovation we attended, almost everyone seemed to clap for the CEO – more on this later.

We took a quick water and wine break before meeting with the Mayor, and his goals for his town seemed to reflect those of both other smaller Italian cities and those that former US manufacturing hubs had. Part of his town’s problem stemmed from the fact Marzotto still owned all manufacturing assets they built, even if they were disused and in disarray. Likewise, the Italian economic crash lead to the national government helping itself to town’s rainy day funds, leading to a contraction of public employees and services. In fact, of 230 or so employees, the city had to fire 100 over the course of a few years. Furthermore, due to the burden of caring for the social city after Marzotto stopped funding these services, the effort of providing the same quality of life as 30 years ago has strained political and economic resources.

The most interesting thing we learned from the mayor is that young people made up the majority of his base, as he’s poured more funds into education and established a council (or process of) grievances for underaged citizens. He was still worried, when asked, that even with these steps, children would leave for bigger cities and more opportunities, especially as the youth unemployment rate rises in Italy. Interestingly enough, the older rate of unemployment has remained relatively unaffected despite the drop in Marzotto staff.

After dinner, we were invited to a town hall panel that included Vincent and Debra, but also had a writer from The Economist and Marzotto’s CEO, Giorgio. All of us were shocked at the warm welcome Giorgio received and the applause he got when introduced. This was increased when we learned of his disconnect with the people of Valdagno and how he views economic and environmental initiatives outside of Italy as the bread-and-butter of his operation. He delivered a canned speech containing a video and PowerPoint, with both focusing on social improvements in Czech factories and environmental initiatives in Australia and New Zealand. All of us students, and even Debra were horrified by his behavior during the panel, and I think we were too shocked to ask questions. This town hall stretched late into the night, and we got home at a little after midnight.

The next morning, we took a bus back to Parma and visited the world’s largest pasta factory – Barilla Parma. I saw a package of my favorite cookie, Pan di Stelle, on their display in the conference room and everyone from Barilla was shocked that a white kid from America was addicted to these cookies, and I was shocked we were going to have a presentation on their social and environmental initiatives around cocoa-producing communities.

We viewed several videos on their environmental and sustainability initiatives, then went for a tour of the pasta plant. Unfortunately, for both hygiene and corporate-secret reasons, I was not allowed to bring my phone onto the production floor, but everything was incredibly automated, delicately balanced, and delicious. Yes, you can eat raw, not-yet-firm pasta, and much was eaten. I considered this my “free sample”.

We learned that despite the increase in automation, none of the 100 workers on the plant floor were laid-off, but that all were retrained and that production doubled, leading to a 3-year payback period for the entire suite of upgrades. (Please watch this video on the cool robots:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkoiiS81goU) What was even more interesting was that even the 60-or-70 year old drying machines could still be used, and that they looked as new and as beautiful as the modern machines on the line next to them.

After the tour, we had lunch with their Head of Sustainability, some members of the marketing and HR teams, and a member of the Barilla family and ate some amazing ass pasta. And not just pasta, they had bread and fruit and meat – all things they championed through their “don’t diet, eat in moderation” campaign.

This campaign actually lead to an interesting discussion between Andy and I on how they could advertise the Mediterranean diet as the diet of moderation, but still produce delicious and addicting cookies. While not 100% solved, the aforementioned Pan di Stelle cookies have 37.4 Calories per cookie, which is less than the 53.3 per Chips Ahoy cookie. It also has fewer carbs (5g v 7.3g), less fat (1g v 2.6g), and even has some protein from the nuts used. On top of all this, the Pan di Stelle cookie is simply more filling, and so, one eats less of it. This is how we wrapped our heads around how a conglomerate like Barilla and its brands could justify making a detrimental product and advertise to basically, not eat it. People who enjoy it aren’t addicted like in America.

The social and environmental work they do seems to focus on the impacts of individual product lines rather than the whole company – Pan di Stelle helps farmers diversify crops and return back to polycropping with Bananas in addition to Cocoa, and also provides wells and educational facilities in regions they purchase from. The main pasta ingredient, wheat, now is required to be grown on fields that participate in crop rotation and that dedicate 3% to natural flowers and vegetation for beneficial insects, while also requiring a reduction in fertilizer and uses satellite and sensor imaging to determine what wheat is best for the planet and ourselves.

After a long day at Barilla, we returned back to Verona and had a late night in just drinking wine and making really good sandwiches with lunch meat we bought from the supermarket down the street.

How do you know when you’re in love, what’s the main sign?  It’s been different every single time.

What do you long for?         Enough money to buy some private land for my business so I never need to worry about members of the public getting in the way.

What is the most important thing you can do to improve yourself?   Eat better, which is something I’m working on.

What makes it hard for you to keep your focus? The internet and mobile phones.

Do you think society has become too PC (politically correct)? Hmm, no, but I do think lots of people are really quick to shut down any opinion they find offensive, or even that they disagree with. I mean, you’re allowed to fid other people rude/offensive but equally you don’t get to tell people what they can and can’t say or believe.

What tragic love story do you relate to? I can’t think of any.

Has your intuition or “gut” served you well?       Yes.

What’s the longest you’ve ever waited in line for something and what was it? Probably a few hours at a theme park or something. I must have thought it was worth it at the time but I wouldn’t do it now lol.

Who is your favorite model?           I always loved Gemma Ward.

What have you done that is out of character for you?     Quit my job with nothing to go to an absolutely no plans.

Do you believe in karma?   No. It’s a nice idea, but no.

What is one thing you can get in your hometown you can’t get elsewhere?   There’s an ice-cream place that makes everything fresh on site. I guess you can’t get that specific ice-cream anywhere else. It’s good, too.

How important are looks in someone you’re in a relationship with?   They’re important at first, but not in the long run.

What freedom do you feel is not really free anymore?   I mean, none of us are really “free” in the true sense.

What are you most thankful for?   My husband, my family, my animals, my work, my clients.

Git gud with a shit ton of music-related things (a more traditional DAW like Ableton or Logic, a MIDI controller like the Novation Launchpad or MIDI Fighter, turntables, etc.) and improve the quality of my production skills

Make a vidya gam! I have a license for GameMaker: Studio that’s kinda just lying around.

Start a podcast and streaming on Twitch/Beam/etc. Right now in the case of the former I actually do have a bit of a plan starting to come together (my working title is Late Night Game Night, and I’m gonna start with a six-episode season of fun little stories about games I love), but the latter has kind of hit a snag because I can’t get streaming to work on the networks in my dorm. 5 things people may not know about me:

I have an off-the-wall universe of fictional stories focused around a really unusual place called Greyson City living in my head. The Stuck trilogy (which is 100% mine) and the Sparks spinoff series (created by my best friend, but developed with my help) are the core bits that really sorta serve as the foundation for it, but high school really pounded my ability to commit to because it was almost impossible to invest myself in it without having an adverse effect on my performance in classes. I’m slowly but surely coming around to the concept of coming back to it, though.

I make music. After the whole Stuck thing slowed down I needed a new creative outlet that I could still invest myself in without exhausting my ability to focus on my schoolwork when need be, and I found that music was much easier for me to do so with; I was still stimulating myself by getting into it, but it never ate into my time enough to have a negative effect on me the way my writing unintentionally did. I’d like to think I’ve gotten much better at it as time has gone by, too; my work has helped my personal projects stand out in college and is present throughout the near entirety of an indie film our film club made at school.

I was kind of an aggressive jerk when I was a kid; one time I punched a kid in the face in first grade for cutting me in line. (I feel like a fundamental change in personality happened with me between 1st and 2nd, and since then I’ve kind of just been a Soft Boy™ like most know me as today.)  

In relation to the last point, I was bullied pretty ruthlessly in my earlier years, particularly during the second half of elementary school. I wouldn’t go so far as to say my experiences were something I’d choose to make happen if I had the option, but I do credit them for helping me develop a sense of empathy I probably wouldn’t have had (or at least been able to outwardly show) otherwise.

1.Who was the last person you held hands with? I honestly have no idea. I’m not a very hand-holdy person. Best guess would be @thegoinbetweens whilst being annoying/weird, haha. 2. Are you outgoing or shy? I’d err more on outgoing, at least in small groups of people. But out going in a more being-generally-friendly sense, more than grand gestures of extroversion, haha. 3. Who are you looking forward to seeing? I’m really looking forward to seeing my family at the end of the month. :34. Are you easy to get along with?
