Summary of art!!!
I'm happy to see how my art is slowly getting better each year. This one was pretty harsh but also productive. At the end of the year, as I finished the last exams in university (there's only final project left, which will be in may) I'm kinda tired of everything. I don't have much energy even after the month of rest. I WANT to draw, I have tons of ideas, but I'm really not in the mood to do something big, something that will take more than 2-3 hours to make. And that's okay I think, I'll continue drawing as much as I want and what I want, not pushing myself too much. Waiting until I'm fully rested again and ready to create some bangers using everything I've learned from these 6 years. Lol.
REBLOGS HIGHLY APPRECIATED, really :>

author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock), known for her steamy adventure novels, is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire, Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), who believes her fictional story holds clues to a real-life treasure. her well-meaning but hapless book cover model, Alan (Channing Tatum), launches a rescue mission, leading to a madcap jungle adventure full of mishaps and unexpected allies.

The Lost City had me curious, and I’ll say, it’s got that fun kind of vibe. Sandra Bullock’s character, Loretta, spends a good bit of the film in a pink sequined jumpsuit; and honestly, thank goodness it didn’t stick around for the entire runtime. that sparkly outfit is probably the real hero of this movie, enduring mud, sweat, and who-knows-what else! Sandra Bullock is as graceful as ever, and I have to say, she does not look a day older than she did in her last rom-com; but she really looks scrawny. her chemistry with Channing Tatum? well, it’s there.. like, it’s okay. they’re both charming, and even if I didn’t totally buy the romance, the banter’s fun. Channing’s character, Alan, is that classic loveable oaf, trying to be the brave hero but tripping over vines and his own feet. he definitely brings in a few laughs with his clumsy attempts at rescuing her, and his knack for looking completely clueless is half the comedy.
Tumblr media
now, I have to admit, Daniel Radcliffe as the villain caught me off guard. haven’t I seen him as an evil archaeologist before? turns out, this is becoming his thing, and I’m honestly not mad about it. he has that perfect mix of arrogance and lunacy, and while it’s not the most original character, he brings enough quirk to keep it entertaining. then, oh man, Brad Pitt. I was NOT expecting him to show up, and when he did, it was in the most Brad Pitt way possible—charismatic, effortlessly cool, and, surprisingly, pretty funny! this guy shows up as some wild-card mercenary, and he’s just so nonchalant about all the action happening around him. usually, we see him as the smooth, mysterious type, but here, he’s leaning into the comedy, and it’s a pretty good fit. honestly, I’m convinced Brad can pull off any role he wants. he’s in and out way too quickly, but he makes a memorable impact for sure. overall, The Lost City is just a fun, light-hearted ride. it’s one of those movies where we don’t think too hard, laugh at the goofy bits, and just enjoy the ridiculous plot. sure, it’s predictable and has some cheesy moments, but it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. this is pure popcorn fun, with a bit of adventure, a hint of romance, and a lot of laughs. if you’re after a movie with a mix of escapist adventure and humour, this one’s worth a watch.
Tumblr media
final verdict: I think it was okay/watchable

sorry not sorry but murderbot dropping ‘i was going to kill all humans until i saw sanctuary moon and then i decided i’d rather watch that instead’ on the sanctuary moon team like a space future atom bomb is exquisite.
assistant sound director going home like ‘yeah your other son might be a doctor but guess who stopped a mass murder?’ a couple lead actors developing even worse diva/god complexes than they already had. the insane stress on the production team ‘if we don’t get the next season out when we promised it might snap and kill thousands of innocent people. it probably won’t. but it might.’ the overwhelming preening desire to work it into ad campaigns, acceptance speeches, casual brunches, etc, balanced out by marketing weeping ‘people do not like SecUnits! we can NOT advertise ourselves as the preferred serial for serial killers!’ crossed with that one extremely paranoid dude in accounting going ‘shutupshutup it can and will hear you and it can and will find you and it can and will kill you stoptalkingaboutit.’ the studio allocating a 5% budget increase for next season instead of the planned 5% budget decrease just—just in case. the odd relief the secondary love interest’s actor feels: ‘well when the robot revolution comes i’ll be one of the last to die’. the odd nervousness the primary antagonist actress feels: ‘it knows this is fiction right? it’s not mad at me, right?’ One of the writers who had been increasingly phoning it in over the last few years suddenly quitting drinking and turning their life around because their work has meaning dammit their work has MEANING.

alright so people learn to express themselves through observation, right? it’s one of the reasons facial expressions and perception there of vary country to country, why people might end up more expressive/stoic depending on your parents/guardians pattern of behavior. and murderbot didn’t acculturate itself watching people around it, it hates watching real people. murderbot developed it’s sense of self watching soap operas. tens of thousands of hours of soap operas. We already know it’s face is painfully easy to read, and while murderbot attributes it to not having practice controlling it’s expression without the benefit of armor:
Then she added, “You know, you can stay here in the crew area if you want. Would you like that?” They all looked at me, most of them smiling. One disadvantage in wearing the armor is that I get used to opaquing the faceplate. I’m out of practice at controlling my expression. Right now I’m pretty sure it was somewhere in the region of stunned horror, or maybe appalled horror.  Mensah sat up, startled. She said hurriedly, “Or not, you know, whatever you like.”  I said, “I need to check the perimeter,” and managed to turn and leave the crew area in a totally normal way and not like I was fleeing from a bunch of giant hostiles.
I would argue that it’s not just lack of practice being neutral—due to it’s particular set of formative experiences, it’s default facial expressions are, in human terms, almost absurdly overexaggerarated. That look of horror is the same one the sanctuary moon terraforming supervisor had when she discovered her twin sister was sleeping with her second husband, and they were both planning on framing her for the death of the colony representative.

My #1 post of 2022
There is — god I don’t know how to put this — there is something profound and tragic and senseless in the fact that the disappointment I feel in JK Rowling so closely mirrors the disappointment Harry and the rest of us felt for his role models. Dumbledore saved the world, Dumbledore was manipulative. Snape was cruel, Snape protected Harry. The Marauders bullied, the Marauders loved.
Rowling’s failure of empathy and the hurt she’s inflicting cuts so deep because I feel immense, inescapable love for the world she gave us all. How can I still love what comes from someone hateful? How can I stop? If I continue to sing praises of her art does that make me hateful?
Stories are important, especially the stories we’re told as children. They shape our character, they form the framework of how we understand the world, they do. And Harry Potter was the story, it can not be understated, and those of you who feel the same don’t need me to explain. And now when I lean on that to understand this sorrow I’m left with a recursive sort of remorse.
It’s a very raw and painful feeling.

Film Fast Review #014:
Tumblr media

It Was the Best of Art, It Was the Worst of Art!
Decided to do a little look at my past four years of ArtFight, and picked out what I thought were my best and worst attacks each year, in hopes of seeing if both categories got better over the years. Worst will always be on the left/top, best will always be on the right/bottom.
ArtFight 2021 (Team Cyberpunk):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left belonged to NexusCryptid | Right belonged to Fayesephone Commentary: My first year, I definitely made strides between the worst piece and the best piece ^^''' This was back in my 'color all the linework except the outer lines' phase. Both of the backgrounds could use some work, but overall I'm happy with posing/movement in both! Unfortunately, the face and proportions of the worst piece are what landed it in last.
ArtFight 2022 (Team Wither)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left belongs to Flat-san | Right belonged to photinus Commentary: Second year, still making similar mistakes and making similar strides! For reference, the worst piece you're seeing here was after an initial correction. I was also at the time having trouble with coloring lineart due to some issues with my workflow. Also baggy pants will forever be my enemy. As for the best piece, I loved the way I used color and posing, and it had a decent background! Was still doing the 'black outlines on the outside' thing.
ArtFight 2023 (Team Vampire)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left belongs to PeterPandora | Right belongs to eryxerite Commentary: I would say things definitely got better this year! Finally moved on to coloring all the lineart, and the fact that the left is my worst piece I think is a significant improvement (suit pants continue to be an enemy, but the derpiness of the face and the anatomy of the right hand... oy.) The best piece, in comparison, went through multiple revisions until I was finally happy with it, and I was so proud of it that I downloaded it to my phone and looked at it multiple times a day for like. A while. The shading really works, and I love what I did with the tears, fabric, and crystal hair!
ArtFight 2024 (Team Seafoam)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top belongs to GhostKiwi | Bottom belong to Lunarah Commentary: This year was my favorite year of ArtFight so far -- I did less attacks than any previous year but still got a higher point total than any previous year! This was also the first year that I consistently also shaded the colored lineart (which was just copy/pasting the shading from the base colors onto the colored lineart lol). With the worst piece, I was happy with the background, but I think the scaling of the character to the background was off, the face was wonky, and I was largely unhappy with the way I did the hair crystal reflection onto the skin. I also could've chosen a better pose, I think, when taking the background into account. As for my best piece, this piece (originally three separate attacks) certainly takes the cake as my most elaborate and time-consuming attacks ever! The shading, hair, posing, and lighting all fucked HARD. My only regret is that I couldn't get a consistent style across all five characters, since each individual character was drawn separately from the others and then combined. Overall takeaway: I think I need to get better at being consistent with style. And, glaringly, side angled faces are my biggest weakness. I need to bone up on that before next year, methinks. And I still think I have a ways to go with improving on clothing folds. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with my growth over the past four years, and I hope to grow more next July!!
If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read my little self-reflective musings. Also, if you noticed anything else in these pieces that you think could use some work, I would welcome constructive criticism! No assholery obvi please.

TMNT: The Last Ronin by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird & Tom Waltz
"There are people, creatures, teachers, warriors, heroes, and legends..."
So there I am, 38-years-old, crying over a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book. Yikes.
But hey, who can really blame me? I've loved these characters for damn-near the entirety of my 38 years. And hell, at six, I didn't just want to be like Michelangelo, I straight-up wanted to be Michelangelo. So to get to experience a send-off for these characters that's as emotionally fine-tuned and executed as The Last Ronin was a bittersweet treat. Furthermore, the action is chaotic fun despite a slightly underwhelming villain, and the artwork is immersive, bringing this futuristic look at the TMNT universe to life with ample grit. It's not quite perfect, but its closer than I'd ever thought I'd get to experience.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need more, so it's time for The Last Ronin - Lost Years .
9/10

Review - Smile (2022) - A Messy Message
I'm bringing my old horror movie blog back from the dead! Check out this week's article on the site: LINK
Or under the cut:
Smile (2022) follows the story of Rose Cutter (Sosie Bacon), a therapist who witnesses one of her patients commit an awful act in her office. It turns out this patient was plagued by an entity that latches onto whoever witnesses its deadly deeds, creating a train of trauma wherever it goes.
Tumblr media
The monster takes residence in its victims mind, providing oodles of scares with disturbing hallucinations, including causing its namesake: to make give everyone a wide, unsettling, unblinking smile. Most of these hallucinations are deployed in unusually effective jump scares. It's rare that a movie uses such tactics without being irritating, but Smile finds the right balance between unsettling and jumpy that makes for effective horror. Similarly, relying on hallucinations for scares or storytelling can often leave the watcher feeling frustrated - why should we stay invested, if we never know what's real or what's not? Does anything matter, if nothing is real? Smile, for the most part, knows when to hide its hallucinations well. Most of the time, the smiling itself is a dead giveaway that we're in Rose's head, and there are subtle clues elsewhere that show the difference between psychological and reality. This means that when we're not sure what's real, we're at least invested in what Rose will do next. Both of these elements, usually frustrating in horror, are utilized well here - for the most part. (More on this later.)
The monster of Smile is an allegory, and its meaning is clear: the monster in Smile is trauma. Each traumatic event leads the victim down a dark road until they feel they have no choice but to cause someone else trauma with their own death. The film slides this across the table to you in a careful, subtle way, so you feel just a little bit smug with yourself for figuring out its all a metaphor.
But how does that metaphor hold up?
For the most part, pretty well. And after a truly disastrous birthday party, with Rose's sister (Gillian Zinser) yelling she's "traumatized" her nephew (Matthew Lamb), you think you've guessed what the twist will be - after all, trauma is our monster-stand-in, right? The film is expanding it's message to say it's not just those final actions that inflict trauma, but the actions leading to it. Sure, Rose will defeat the monster, but it won't matter, because she's already passed it on. She's already made a copy of the videotape, so to speak.
There is a pretty great finale scene of Rose facing the monster for the last time - facing her childhood trauma for the last time, and overcoming it. It leaves us with a message about how trauma can be faced and tackled and made livable, wrapping its themes up in a nice bow.
But remember the ongoing hallucinations? Yeah, it turns out, Rose didn't manage to conquer her trauma after all.
And you know, it's almost worth the annoyance of that, to see the final form of the Smile Monster. It's a standout moment, and a wonderful monster design.
Ultimately though, it leads to the unravelling of the allegory. Because Rose doesn't win out, against the monster. The cycle is continued. And it's not so much that the ending is an unhappy one that makes it irritating - Ring has a similar one, and an even bleaker implication - it's what it means for the message. We're left to believe there is no true escape or healing from trauma, and no other options. It's an unsatisfying, untrue way to leave your allegory, and feels more like an attempt to subvert audience expectations than truly thought through.
That said, overall, Smile is a good psychological horror. Bacon carries the film with strong, sympathetic acting in a role that could easily become irritating, and it delivers on its scares.
Just turn it off at the good ending.
