Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection - 1970

Back home after a few days on the road, I was glad to get back to the vinyl.  This spin recommended by my friend Benji, hits another theme I’ve noticed.  Artists who are widely known, I’m familiar with (I’ve even seen Elton John live, in the face to face tour with Billy Joel) yet completely unaware of this album.

Some of his songs so ubiquitous, and lyrics so familiar that I can just sing along with, without much thought.  Which is a shame, I’ve missed some amazing songwriting.  And also missed out on knowing who Bernie Taupin is - a life long collaborator with Elton John.

Released in 1970, this is much more of a blend of folk and rock which I didn’t expect.  Being a child of the 80s and more familiar with that end of his catalog.

The song and lyrics that stuck with me the most was the chorus of the first track on the second side.  Maybe I was paying more attention because of the record flip?  I do notice when listening to familiar albums that my interest, familiarity, knowledge of later tracks seem to slowly dissipate.

So with renewed focus I heard -

Tumbleweed Connection is a fantastic record. This is the first song, and I think it does a tremendous job at setting the tone for the rest of the record. Plus it’s just a fun song.
