Interview with Tuelo
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tuelo over Zoom video! Tuelo Minah (stage name simply Tuelo) released ‘The Life of Margaret Cornelius’, not only her debut full-length album, but also a recounting of a journey that has taken the artful South African rocker from her home and all over the globe in search of her own personal corner of the world. From a childhood growing up on a remote farm amid the political upheaval during the end South Africa’s apartheid, to venturing alone to New York City at age 17 to pursue music, to writing in Ireland, composing in Turkey & Germany, and heading back to NYC & South Africa near the start of the pandemic to finish the record and then filming music videos in Colombia, ‘The Life of Margaret Cornelius’ is a raw and powerful glimpse into the creative mind of one of rock’s most exciting new artists. Once called “New York's Best Singer (and the World's)” by Huff Post while AfroPunk described her performances as “an inspiring and spiritual experience”, Tuelo’s four-year journey to create this collection has resulted in an album that is a "mesmerizing cross-cultural mashup of punk, rock, soul and the Afro strains of her homeland" (Magnet Magazine). A mystical, soulful and sometimes haunting rock record, Tuelo’s debut album uses her powerhouse and uniquely stirring vocals to create a soulful wave of art-rock inspired by the great traditions of South African protest music and the polyrhythms and tonalities of her native Tswana and Khoikhoi tribes. Two videos have rolled out leading up to the album (“Saint Margaret” & “Canary”) with several others to come, all continuing a singular narrative of rising, falling and discovering one’s self worth. Also recently announced is a collection of artwork NFTs that Tuelo has made herself including the album cover and single artwork for every track on the album. Just listening to “Happier” (a punk-infused reflection on compounded African immigrant issues and freeing herself of burdens of conforming), “Trouble” (a beautiful swaying plea for her troubles to leave her), and “Killer” (a spacey slice of psychedelia and also the first full song Tuelo ever wrote) exemplifies the breadth of a powerful new talent injecting the indie rock scene with a fresh, insightful perspective. Tuelo also stares squarely and unafraid in the face of those who don’t see a woman of color inhabiting the current rock landscape, saying “I can't wait to show the world what music can do, how music can be, that rock can be elevated, and that black people who started it have a place here.” We want to hear from you! TUELO - Saint Margaret
TUELO is led by South African born Tuelo Minah, who blends soul and punk-rock to make what's been dubbed "revival music." She sounds a bit like the rebellious daughter of Nina Simone and David Bowie who grew up listening to the Sex Pistols and Blondie, and took music lessons from Miriam Makeba. "Saint Margaret" is a homage to Tuelo's mother, Seabi, whose "English" name is Margaret. After leaving her family farm in South Africa and coming to America, Tuelo found her voice and music as a guide to conquer herself. Her mother has yet to hear her sing or see her perform, yet she remains a favorite topic amongst fans because of how Tuelo weaves her into every conversation and every show. Tuelo credits her love for people, environment, tradition, culture, words and learning, spirituality, and her non-conformist and awkward nature to her mum, and often remarks that if somebody had told her as a child that her mother was God, she would have been a believer a long time ago.

Indie 5-0: 5 Questions with TUELO
Originally hailing from a farm in South Africa, Tuelo Minah came to the states years ago and has been working on making a name for herself ever since. Since her start TUELO has sung on Angelique Kidjo’s two most recent albums, backed up the likes of Paul Simon and Lion King composer Lebo M., and performed onstage at Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Central Park Summer Stage.
This past week the powerhouse partnered with Consequence of Sound to release “Saint Margaret,” a song dedicated to a mother who has, heartbreakingly, never heard her sing. We had the privilege of sitting down with TUELO to discuss her eclectic influences, plans for world domination and more...
Congratulations on the release of "Saint Margaret!" Could you tell us a bit about the writing and recording process?
My writing process all has to do with peace of mind. I have to have peace in my world, my immediate surroundings, and in my mind so that I can create - even if I am writing darker songs. I need to think. I usually have a melody in my head or have been listening to either traditional music I grew up with, rock music, or classical music. Everyday I add to my music ideas bank with topics, phrases, lines to write about as they come to me - almost all of it is stored on my phone. Once I have a melody and topic the music writes itself as either simple guitar or melody. Afterwards, I meet with Kevin to write for a full band, I tell him all of my crazy thoughts and we write a simple version for instruments and send it to the band for a listen before we tackle it in the studio.
Tuelo, your voice is just unreal! Do you have any formal training growing up?
No training, can you believe it?! I feel lucky that I discovered this at some point in my life. I trained myself and still do, and never actually sang like a singer until I came to America. I also taught myself guitar and some piano. When I really, really make it and make special money I'm going to formally train in piano and guitar - just a couple of lessons everyday - ha!
What did you grow up listening to?
It's a mix of so many thing. My sisters were dancers so I danced as a kid - they were very eclectic in their choice of music and exposed me to every genre possible. My family is still traditional in their ways, so traditional Setswana-Khoisan chants and dance I learned from the moment I could walk and traditional South African gospel were a big influence. My father used to make us listen to “negro spirituals” as he called them on road trips - which was all the time because he was a preacher - and that was always at the back of my head. I also clung to rock music, punk music and classical music from the influence of my siblings and school.
Any plans to tour soon?
Must. Make. Plans! We are looking for a booking agent and manager who are awesome. My desire is to tour year round all the time - and we are manifesting the right people to make that happen!
What's next for you guys?
Let me check my list! Everything! First we are releasing the full EP. Then we will be playing shows and recording in South Africa, UK, and USA - and soon we will be on stage performing for millions of people.
