You know I do think it's interesting how strongly Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) makes the point that bringing someone back from the dead is inherently selfish.
I've seen it elsewhere but not nearly as unequivocally and plainly put. First, we have Majhal in episode 4 - an alchemist so obsessed with bringing back his dead love, he completely fails to notice that she survived and returned to him. And even once the truth is revealed... he rejects her, since she's not the ~perfect girl~ from his memories, but an old woman - an actual person, with an actual life.
And if you missed it there, we then meet Tucker, so obsessed with keeping his lifestyle and success as a State Alchemist he does, you know, that. And then he goes on to become obsessed with bringing her back - but not her, not really, as he straight-up tells Ed in the 5th laboratory - he wants the girl from his memories, the perfect, unchanging doll.
Both times, we see that those obsessed with bringing someone back from the dead aren't interested in bringing back a person, with thoughts and feelings and their own independent life to live - no, they want their idea of that person, the glowing angel who could never change, never grow, and never go wrong. And that also goes for Ed and Izumi too - Ed was so obsessed with bringing his mother back that he ignored Pinako, ignored the family that took him in, and selfishly put his brother's life at risk... for which he paid the price. Izumi lost her ability to have future children, any of them, stuck on a dream on the child she could have had. Both didn't want that mother/child - they wanted their loved ones, the ones they dreamed of, not the ones that were actually there.
Most times resurrection is brought up in media, it's with the lesson that "oh, the cost is too high", "oh, you're disturbing their rest", "oh, they don't come back right." It's rare to see it put so clearly, so obviously, so horrifically that actually, no, even the fact that you attempt it - even the fact that you want to - is an inherently selfish act, that turns your back on life and the living to chase a dream that may not have ever existed.
It's an interesting take on the whole idea, of death and life and memory and obsession. For all that 2003 dropped the ball on the ending, I do love the development they gave to the characters!

Raising Stripe
Chapter 26
Stripe was back to his troublesome self. The choking incident had not deterred his curious nature and he was eager to explore Nana's house to the fullest. His Dada seem to keep a closer eye on him since the accident which only mildly annoyed him. Anytime Stripe tried to crawl away from his dada's sight, he was immediately scooped into his arms.
It was fun at first but Stripe wanted to wander around and find where Grandpa was hiding. He had located Mama and Nana in the kitchen during his escape attempts, but Grandpa was still missing. Stripe tried shrieking to get his attention but Grandpa still didn't respond. As Stripe planed his next escape attempts, the front door was forcefully opened.
“WHERE IS HE!” Yelled a new voice.
Stripe was mildly frightened and his first instinct was to hide, but his curiosity was too much. He crawled towards the sound to catch a good look at the stranger. Peeking out from behind the couch, he could see his Dada approach a young woman with bright ginger hair standing in front of the open door.
“Geeze Trish, you trying to get the cops called on you?” Craig teased the lady.
“YOU! How dare you keep it from me! I’ve been waiting forever for this and YOU have the nerve to lie to me!” She yelled at Craig.
“What the hell are you yelling at me for you psycho?” Craig asked, becoming annoyed.
The lady crossed her and stomped her foot. “Don't act clueless. Dad told me everything on the ride over.”
She pouted and turned away from Craig and finally noticed Stripe hiding behind the couch. Her face changed immediately and she squealed in excitement. In three long steps she picked up the baby and squeezed his cheek against hers while calling him a cutie.
Stripe whined at the sudden and aggressive affection he was showered in. He was thankfully yanked out of her hands by his Dada.
”Careful! He's not a toy.” Craig scolded the woman.
“Oh! He's just so cute! I can't believe you didn't tell me about him. I can finally prove I can totally be a great aunt!” Tricia squealed with excitement.
“Not if you keep scaring him. He's sensitive around loud noises.” Craig explained as he soothed the baby currently pressing his face against his shoulder.
Tricia agreed to tone down her excitement. She used a softer tone and gently rubbed the baby's back to make Stripe more comfortable. Stripe's curiosity slowly overcame and he started peeking out at the strange lady. She was pretty like Nana but had bright red hair like Grandpa.
“Hi sweetie. I'm your Auntie Tricia. Your Daddy was a meanie for keeping you a secret.” Trisha spoke with a baby voice.
Stripe giggled at her strange tone. He was starting to like her. He babbled trying to get her to keep talking with her funny voice. Tricia laughed and continued to speak using her baby voice.
Craig watched equal parts amused and annoyed by his sister's childish antics. He eventually trusted his sister enough to let her try holding Stripe again. This time, she held him gently making sure he was comfortable. While holding the baby, she asked about the whereabouts of Tweek and Laura.
“They were missing some ingredients and left me in charge of the oven.” Craig responded with a shrug.
“Is that why it smells like something's burning?” Tricia asked.
Craig cursed as he ran to the kitchen. Stripe giggled watching Dada run. Tricia muttered idiot under her breath as she followed him into the kitchen. She then laughed as Craig burned his hand trying to pull out the tray without any gloves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally the Tucker family was gathered around the fully spread table. Everyone's mouth was watering at the sight of all the wonderful food. Tricia was asked to lead grace before they could dig in. By the time she finished, Stripe began to bang the high high chair impatiently making everyone laugh at the hungry baby.
Tweek served him a plate with mashed carrots, bite size pieces of rolls, and pieces of turkey. Stripe quickly dug his fingers into the carrots and shoved his coated fingers into his mouth. He happily kicked his feet enjoying the sweet taste on his fingers.
He looked around the table and noticed Nana picking up a tray and passing it to Grandpa. Auntie Tricia also picked up a tray and passed it to Dada who transferred it to Mama. Stripe looked down at his plate and picked up a piece of roll. He turned to his mama and held out the meal. “MAMA, AHH!”
Tweek accepted the piece and thanked him with a kiss on the cheek. Stripe continued to eat his meal while occasionally offering Tweek his food. Tweek would humor him and add the food back to his plate. When Stripe's plate was empty, he began to rub his eyes.
Craig picked up Stripe and handed him his bottle. Laura and Tweek followed Craig into the living room. Tricia and Thomas would join them after clearing the table. They settled on the couches and picked up their conversation from dinner while Stripe slept in Craig's arms.
“Craig, your father and I wanted to ask if you and Tweek would like to host Christmas this year. It's been so long since we've seen South Park and I miss some of our neighbors from there.” Laura said with a nostalgic expression.
Craig looked at Tweek silently asking him to respond. “Of course Laura! It will be easier on us not to travel with the baby. Stripe still doesn't like being strapped down for long.”
“Speaking of Stripe. I know you said your friend was working on changing him back. How is far along has he gotten?” Laura asked hesitantly.
Craig was caught off guard but answered honestly, “Well Kenny said he is still making a list of all the stuff he threw out from the accident. He thinks Stripe managed to avoid the more toxic formulas but still wants to check him next week just to be sure. He's hopeful it won't take more than three months.”
Laura's face fell, and she fruitlessly tried to mask her disappointment. “Oh well, I'm glad I will still get to have a grandbaby for Christmas at least.”
Craig and Tweek looked at each other uncomfortably. They knew how eager Laura was to have a grandbaby. Stripe had been a source of joy for the family and they had also grown to enjoy parenting. However they felt selfish forcing Stripe to be something he's not.
The fully human Nina that Tucker produces after using some of Al's Philosopher Stone, a body that has none of the non-human animal parts used to build the various chimera-Ninas, is exactly like her own before her father experimented on her. And yet it remains vegetative and without any neurological function that we can see. Her soul did not return, and in fact this body lacks any soul whatsoever.
Whether this is a problem of Tucker being insufficiently skilled or lacking in the particular knowledge which would be able to call her to this new vessel, or because her soul can no longer be retrieved from whence souls depart to, her existence points to something hotly debated within the text and to which Lust herself was adamant about:
Stone-revived Nina is soulless, nothing more than a functionally inanimate and person-accurate flesh husk.
This is not the case for homunculi.
Because homunculi have souls.
And we see this all before Ed confronts the very homunculus of his own mother. The non-human copy of Trisha he has to convince himself is in fact a soulless mistake, nothing more.
But Nina. Nina shows us what a soulless being truly looks like.
#i'll get into dissecting some of what we could surmise about the nature of souls in 03 & the metatextual claims that arise#but man#no matter which souls they may be or have the homunculi have souls#fma#fma 03
The True Lab would disturb Ed and Al in more ways than chimeras and Philosopher's Stones as it combines four things at once:
Dead people brought back to life with terrible results
Fused creatures in constant agony
Experimentation on human SOULs to harvest energy
A remorseful scientist who was put in charge of morally questionable research by a higher-up
The Amalgamates are hideous fusions of monsters brought back from the brink of death thanks to the power of determination Alphys extracted from human SOULs. In particular, Endogeny would remind the Elric brothers of Nina as an Amalgamate made of numerous dog monsters.
Flowey's background would remind Al of himself. They were both children who conspired with their siblings with terrible consequences, including but not limited to being supernaturally trapped in bodies that were not their own. After an injection of determination brought him back to life as a golden flower, Flowey was upset to find out that he could no longer feel compassion and attributed it to his lack of a SOUL. As a disembodied soul attached to a suit of armor, Al lost the physical sense of pain and he was upset about being unable to sleep like a normal human.
Despite the backgrounds of the Amalgamates and Flowey, Alphys's situation is comparable to those of the Elric brothers and Marcoh rather than Shou Tucker. All five of them tampered with life. Alphys and the Elric brothers both ended up creating hideous creatures in an attempt to bring people back from the dead. Alphys and Marcoh were both involved in experimentation on human souls under the order of a higher-up. Alphys and Tucker both created multiple hideous fusions of living things in constant agony. But Alphys, the Elric brothers, and Marcoh felt immense guilt over the consequences of their actions and took responsibility for it.
As the royal scientist, Alphys was put in charge of research on human SOULs in an attempt to break the barrier trapping monsterkind in the underground. This led to the discovery of determination, a substance that allows human SOULs to persist after death. King Asgore sent her numerous monsters that had "fallen down" and she injected them with determination, successfully reviving them. But their bodies could not handle this kind of energy for long and they fused with each other in a terrible manner as a result. The birth of the Amalgamates horrified Alphys, who took care of them in the True Lab alone as she was too afraid to tell anyone. Sometime before this, she injected a golden flower with determination to test if it could give something that was neither human nor monster the will to live. But the flower disappeared and became Flowey.
Flowey is a soulless golden flower imbued with the essence of Asriel Dreemurr, the prince of monsterkind that tragically died young. In his previous life, Asriel made a secret plan with Chara, the human child who became his adoptive sibling and best friend, to free his people. Chara fulfilled their part in the plan by committing suicide for him to take their SOUL, become a powerful monster, and cross the barrier. Asriel died when he refused to fight back the humans that attacked him on the surface. Out of guilt, his father split up from his mother, declared war against humanity, and collected six human SOULs, kickstarting the entire plot of the game.
After their father mysteriously disappeared, the Elric brothers performed human transmutation in an attempt to resurrect their mother but it resulted in a hideous creature that did not live for long instead. Ed, who had already lost a leg, sacrificed his arm in exchange for bringing Al's soul back from the Gate of Truth. This was how Al became a living suit of armor afterwards. The boys believed that they subjected their mother to a gruesome second death before Ed and Pinako examined the creature's bones and found out that it bore no resemblance to Trisha.
Marcoh carried out his orders to create Philosopher's Stones out of the souls of dead Ishvalans to kill even more people during the war of extermination, a fact that caused immense rage to Scar when the former warrior monk found out. Full of immense guilt over what he's done, Marcoh begs Scar to kill him and rid the Homunculi of a useful tool but Scar makes the doctor join him in his quest for his brother's research instead.
Fullmetal Alchemist x the True Lab from Undertale
what a horrible brilliant idea
