The term “또래 압력” is a combination of two Korean words: “또래” (ttorae), which means “same age” or “peer,” and “압력” (ablyeog), which means “pressure” or “stress.” Together, the phrase literally means “peer pressure” or “pressure from peers.”

In Korean culture, this pressure can come from the highly competitive education system, where students are expected to excel academically and socially, and where conformity is valued. This pressure can have negative effects on mental health and wellbeing, leading to feelings of isolation and low self-esteem.

However, there are also positive aspects to peer pressure when our friends and social groups encourage us to do things that are beneficial for us. Positive peer pressure can be very helpful and can motivate us to make positive changes in our lives.
