@amomentxofhappiness - for Adam
Tumblr media
Heavenly Made was no subtle being. With the bright red cursive store name above the door, the hand-drawn cupcakes framing the windows and the bright sunny yellow that coloured the building. Couldn't miss it. It was tastefully gaudy, and was so for a reason. The locals would whisper about beautifully hand crafted pastries and cakes, and nice coffee.
That would be where Adam found himself. In a fairly busy bakery, warmth rolling from the kitchens in the back, and mainstream pop playing unobtrusively on the speakers. Someone brought him his order - a redhead with wide, rounded glasses and a bright smile. "Hope you enjoy~" She flittered off someplace else.
Even the plate was lined with little cartoony cupcakes. Poking out from underneath the rim of the plate was a small piece of card. Unfolded, it read: "Good morning! Hope you have a wonderful day today, and that your day goes as planned! :) It's a beautiful day outside, so please make sure take some time to enjoy it and stay hydrated! Please speak to the waiter on the floor if there's anything else we can do for you! Happy to help! x"

Tumblr media
✦ you — the new transfer student whose on a scholarship personally assigned by crowley himself. your presence alone strikes great curiosity to students. but when you're clearly surrounded by many guys full of different, colorful reputations they don't suppose they have a chance to become your freind. or another?
✦ azul ashengrotto — the guy who you see in jade's house whenever you're over (and the guy who just so happens to like you). he supposed the crush thing first was realized when you found an old picture of jade's class. he thought he'd gotten rid of all evidence but guess he was wrong. (he was included there therefore his.. old, shameful self was there.) before he could snatch it, or leave a couple of horrified tears you start laughing and comment on his 'cute little self' and how much you'd like to see more. azul stares at you through blurry eyes and his heart skips for a second. finally when you broke up with jade he'll try his absolute to ensure you experience true happiness. (hopefully with him)
✦ jack howl — a freshman who has great potential to land a regular spot on the team. contrary to your expectations with athletes, jack is much more nicer than anyone you've ever met, suprisingly humble as well. and yes, that's including leona. he's sometimes in your P.E class and he usually comes out on the top of it. in terms of academic he's pretty average so crewel just instructed you to tutor him, that concluded your introduction and now he's giving you tips and lessons to deal with P.E as a thanks for your teachings. (he still hasn't stopped when the period of your tutoring sees its deadline)
✦ trey clover — riddle's bestfreind and the guy whose family owns the bakery right across your house. their family makes the most mouth watering desserts, they're the best. you will never go back on that word even if your peace is often interrupted by the customers piling for a taste across the street. you're so lucky since whenever you just happen to bump to him on the path to school he just hands you a bag of pastries with a handsome smile. (it happened so often that he figured he'd give you some.) and gave you well crafted chocolates on valentines day that had you craving for more. (@honey-milk-depresso this one's for ya)
✦ ruggie bucchi — the boy that saved you from getting your teeth knocked out by leona, and the boy you spend a hefty of time engaging in mischief and unwinding. you can say you're pretty good freinds with ruggie, sometimes being an honor student has its boring moments so why not have fun and let loose with someone like ruggie? as long as you don't get caught it's all definitely alright. to your dismay your streak is promptly interrupted by a professor and now you're both in detention. he's still goofing around out of boredom and sends you a flying airplane made of paper. you unfold it it's contents were 'you're pretty(handsome) ;P' when you look up he's gone.
✦ cater diamond — the 'phone addict' who's always updated on the latest trends and gossip around social media. cater is one of the most strangest people you've met. you're actually addicted to your phone yourself so that makes you both buddies you guessed. he's always happy to text you about how his sisters were tormenting him again, even if you don't reply sometimes. you feel bad because the second you send something to him he's already seen it and typing up a response. you express your regret and all he says is that you could make it up to him by going on a date <3
✦ kalim al asim — a son of a sucessful merchant, that makes him super rich. he is jamil's worst nightmare. to jamil's absolute horror, if you've attracted this many guys you're bound to meet kalim eventually. you first meet the bright boy when he barges into jamil's house in the middle of a tutoring session and goes :0 -> :D when he sees you. (there's a face of regret and horror jamil displays when he sees kalim all over you, in a way he mistook the gesture as a personally interested kinda thing) he's asking questions about your name, what you like and you should think carefully before answering before he actually sends you your (favorite animal)
✦ sebek zigvolt — the boy who screamed about club activities when you were laying with silver. originally he wasn't really the best kind of boy to have around. he's... very loud, and honest. a trait you'd appreciate if he didn't lose all sense of logic when it came to malleus. you're suprised when you find out he personally knows him, and it seems like he is more when you do. tells you he will keep a close eye on you, and to not do anything horrible to "waka-sama" and proclaims you will be his enemy if you do. he already treats you like his, like a stupid disease so you're suprised once again when he displays degrees of concern when you get involved in a chemistry mishap.
✦ lilia vanrouge — a mysterious boy with a punky, rock vibe. you really like what he's done with his hair, strangely enough you can't see him being with a color other than pink. he's apart of the light music club with cater and a few other members and verbally professed his desire to bring you to prom, and he did after asking you with a song. you're well acquainted with him and you'd always thought he'd wanted to go to prom as friends but you doubt it when he asks you if you recall the time you went to prom as 'dates' fondly. he's quite suprised when you tell him you know malleus.
✦ idia shroud — your online best freind. other than epel you'd probably say his name if someone asked who your bestfreind (excluding epel) was. you haven't met him in real life, nor have you seen his face since you've known him for less than three months, you can confidently say he's quite close with you. anyhow. you met idia through an online game after he laughed at you for dying and ended up helping you in the end, which led to adding him as a freind. he helps you with challenges, domains, etc.. sometimes he even bought you using his currency when you told him it was your birthday. he only told you his real name after a month of being freinds. now you're curious to the mysterious third year in the school who strangely has the same first name as your online best freind.
✦ ortho shroud — the little brother of your online best freind. unlike idia, ortho wasn't really that afraid to show himself. if anything he completely contrasts his brother. idia was an introvert, ortho would be considered an extrovert and if there was anything you knew about ortho at all was that he completely adored idia. through begging, and to your dismay. idia managed to convince ortho to not show his face, but rather only his voice. so ortho is some kind of link used for both idia and you whenever he didn't want to talk using his real voice so he usually relayed his messages through ortho and to you. he is also the reason why idia now knows you're the new transfer student on a scholarship.
"finally."
✦ vil schoenheit (???) — a popular celebrity whom you finally encounter after being listed in a play as the lead role. you don't know how, when, or why you've been given the leading role out of all things when you barely know stuff about the theaters. safe to say you're confusedly complying at practices, I mean it's better than just rejecting right? to your absolute shock there's a kiss scene with the love interest of the leading role? who just so happens to be VIL SCHOENHEIT?? and he seems to know just about everything you do, he strikes easy conversations with you that you can't help but be tantalize by his ability. soon enough he'll make sure you're going to be his.
✦ rook hunt — the right hand man of vil, a hunter who knows his way with a string and an arrow. rook is definitely.. unique, is the first thing you think of when you meet the guy. he speaks french, which is an anomaly in itself, a welcome one of course. you'd even go as far as to say that it makes him more attractive. as the right hand of vil, rook is aware of every feeling the star has for you. it's inspiring, it shocks his nerves, it's.. addicting. rook will just about do anything to see that look in vil's eyes once more. how dark... how beautiful! he understands why vil is so interested in you but don't fret, he will take care of you~

Friendships Were Made to Change: Chapter Five
A/N: Hey guys how have you been? I haven’t been writing much lately but I’ve had these chapters written so I have no idea why i never let them out??? I think I’m just dumb tbh. Anyway, enjoy!
Chapter Four           Chapter Six
It was a few more days of the same thing: wake up, go to school, try to befriend Damian, leave for akuma attacks, play it off, go home, help her parents in the bakery, do some designs, go to sleep, rinse, repeat. It’s a vicious cycle, but better than back in Paris. At least here she has some friends.
“My usual.” Ah, yes. She almost forgot to mention how she has become sort of friends with a fellow coffee addict. He was a few years older than her, with black hair and blue eyes, with dark bags underneath them to complete the whole ensemble.
“One black coffee with 6 shots of expresso coming right up,” she said with a bright smile. The man just nodded and sat down at one of the booths while he waited. The man, well, Tim, actually, has been a regular here since the day they first opened. From what she gathered, he was sleep deprived and has a lot of siblings. Maybe that’s why he gets no sleep.
After his coffee was done, she set it down in front of him. He grabbed it and chugged half of it. He seemed to visibly brighten and seemed more at ease. “Thanks Marinette. I swear you sure are good at making coffee fit for us addicts.”
“Well Tim, I had to learn after my fair share of long nights. Can’t finish a design without some help from late night coffee.”
“Now that sounds like me. Can’t finish anything nowadays without at least 3 cups of coffee. It’s just not how it’s done.”
“Agreed. It’s an annoyance once you run out of coffee though.”
“Yeah. Speaking of annoyances, my brothers are going to be in here soon,” complained Tim. “Most of them aren’t bad, but man are they all handfuls.”
“I wish I could relate,” said Marinette,” I’ve never had any siblings before.”
“You can have mine,” Tim said with no hesitation whatsoever.
“How about I wait and see what’s in store,” Marinette said with a laugh in her voice. The bell chimed, signaling a new customer. In walked 3 people, the tallest who had a white stripe in his hair, the second tallest who seemed to give off a bubbly personality, and Damian?
“That would be my brothers,” Tim sighed, exasperated.
“Damian is your brother?”
“Wait, you know Damian?”
“Yeah, we have a few classes together and he’s Jon’s friend.” Marinette then went behind the counter to the cash register.
“Wait, your friends with Jon?”
“Hello, welcome to The Boulangerie Patisserie, how can I help you?” Marinette, asked the new group, completely ignoring Tim’s question. The group turned their attention to her from Tim, and they all had completely different reactions on their face.
First was the tall one, he looked like he didn’t give a shit about the current situation and seemed to be eyeing the pastries next to her. The bubbly one looked at her like she was the cutest thing in the world. Like an old grandma about to squish her cheeks. And then there was Damian. He looked at her with pure hatred. How rude. I didn’t do anything to you.
“Hey Pixie, I’ll have one of those cinnamon rolls you got there,”
“Hey, I’ll have the apple Danish and a latte. You are so cute by the way!”
“Tt. Cute isn’t the word I would use to describe Marinette, Dick.”
“Well, hello to you Damian. What are you doing here? I’d expect you to be doing something that doesn’t involve people.”
“Wait Damian, you know this girl?” asked the bubbly one.
“Yeah, she knows Jon.”
“Well aren’t you going to introduce us?”
“If I must. Marinette, meet Jason,” he gestured vaguely to the tall one with the stripe in his hair, “Dick,” he nodded towards the cheerful grandma, “and I’m sure you know Tim as he’s been here everyday since this place has opened.”
“Thank you, demon spawn, for that splendid introduction. Now, get your things and be on your way and leave me to drink my coffee in peace,” piped up Tim from the table he sat at. Ha, demon spawn. How fitting.
She rung up their orders and Dick paid her. They when to sit by Tim while they waited for his coffee. She looked over at the table and saw Dick, Jason, and Tim laughing at a pouting Damian. Looking closer, she could see how Damian actually looked a little upset. Maybe there’s a reason he acts like he’s better than everyone. The latte had just finished, and she called out to Dick.
“Thank you, Marinette. Have a wonderful day,” Dick said to her.
“Of course! You as well!” she said with a beaming smile. Just as all the boys were about to leave, she grabbed Damian’s arm. “Damian wait.”
“What?” he asked, seemingly uninterested.
“I just wanted to say sorry about earlier. You just irked me with how you acted at school. Truce?” She held out her hand once again, hoping for something this time around. Damian looked at her, then her hand, then finally gave her a handshake.
“Truce.” We’re finally getting somewhere. Her phone went off, jolting them from the handshake. Another akuma alert? What gives Hawkmoth?
“Well, I have to go, you know, water my cat. Here, take this muffin, free of charge!” she grabbed a banana muffin, shoved it in his hands, and high-tailed it to the back room. Now let’s take care of this so I can have time to work on the skirt I just started.

Marinette quickly dove out of the SUV. She only stopped enough to make sure to tug Dick along. Marinette was determined to introduce the Waynes to Café liégeois. If they were gonna be some form of a long-range family they would have to be educated in the way of Parisian pastries. They were completely different when compared to the sugar-loaded cakes Americans seemed to love. Dick couldn’t help but laugh, he was glad that at least this one didn't seem to have any qualms about hugs. He gladly allowed himself to be pulled along.
“Netti I’ve had coffee ice cream just not the French version.” Dick had been listening to her rant about the infamous icecream.
“Trust me it’s ten times better and more caffeinated which is a pro if your an insomniac and constantly sleep deprived”
“Whatever you do, I beg you for the recipe. Tim is currently 81% coffee maybe the icecream version will be an effective way to put some more protein in him” Dick was not kidding. Alfred, god bless his soul, is always battling to make sure that all his charges are properly fed. Which is difficult when said charges are nighttime vigilantes who all have exhausting day jobs. Dick could still feel the bump on his head from where Alfred had smacked him with a spatula after finding out that he had nothing but cereal and expired milk in his Blüdhaven apartment. The lecture he received afterward was now infamous.
“Maman PAPA IVE BROUGHT VISITORS!!!” Marinette said while slamming the bakery doors open. Quickly tugging Dick inside, she made sure to hold the door open only long enough to allow Damian and Bruce to come in. She quickly flipped the bakery's sign from open to closed.
The two owners took one glance at Bruce before the Man, who was huge, stepped around the counter and brushed past them to quickly lock the bakery's door and turn off the light. Oh boy.
Quickly rejoining the petite woman who was quickly helping Marinette serve the ice cream. He quickly clasped both their shoulders and pushed them forwards toward the living area. “Let's all take this to the living, shall we?”
Obediently the Waynes followed behind. Marinette quickly gave them some bowls filled with the famous ice cream once they were seated. Regardless of the fact that it was mid-November Dick eagerly gobbled it up. It was delicious. Bruce and Damian decided to eat in smaller and formal bites, though they had to admit they were in love with the flavor as well.
“Marinette dear why don’t you take ….excuse me what’s your name?” Sabine suddenly realized that there were no formal introductions. Of course, she had a rugged idea as to their identities, but she needed confirmation.
“I’m sorry these two have the manners of a rug, which is odd considering one of them was raised by a Brit” Dick quickly interjected. One of them was a Prince yet they were lacking etiquette. Oh, he was so telling Alfred about this when they were back in Gotham.
“I'm Richard Grayson, This is Bruce Wayne and this little guy o'er here is Damian Wayne” He made sure to lay a hand on Damian and Bruce and “Gently” pushed them forward. Seriously these two had to learn how to talk for themselves without seeming like complete assholes.
“Oh wonderful Marinette please take Damian upstairs while we stay down here and discuss the current situation” She suggested with a slightly creepy smile if Marinette was being honest.
Marinette could sense the tension in the room. Quickly grabbed Damian's arm she tugged on him. Although she could feel his reluctance. However, she noticed that he glanced at Mr.Wayne who nodded his permission. Still, he didn’t move until Richard finally motioned him to go. Huh. That’s weird. Were siblings normally like that? Alya never held nearly as much influence over her sisters. Didn’t all kids usually only need there, parents, approval? She’ll have to Ask Luka. Damian quickly followed her up. Marinette decided to fill in the awkward silence quickly by giving him a tour of her room.
“Here is my where I sleep the top bunk usually goes to whichever of my friends are sleeping over however in recent weeks My friend Chloe has decided to claim it as hers in an effort to establish dominance” Damian only seemed to -Tt- at that. Seriously did the kid ever talk?
“Here is the corner that is usually only saved for all my artwork and commissions that I receive, right now I’m completing a portfolio for an internship for (Chloe's mom). Here are some future designs, this design I haven’t colored since I’m not sure which colors to p-“
“Black and Gold, those colors are regal and professional if you want this design to emit power you’ll choose darker colors” Damian suddenly cut her off. Wow. So powerful wasn’t really her goal for this but Marinette quickly scribbled down some notes. Uh oh, red lining on the inside would be perfect. Suddenly Marinette was overcome with the temptation to set to make the design. But unfortunately, she had a guest. Uh oh. Said guest was now busy looking at her Aunt's Saber.
“It’s needs sharpening and proper maintenance” he bit out. Damian was insulted. A saber was an extension of a fencer themselves. A proper fencer would never allow for their saber to be this mistreated or damaged. Suddenly his attention was caught by an engravement. Huh. he's seen that before. It seems like he’ll have to make a call later on.
“That's because that’s not mines it's my biological mothers, and unfortunately sword maintenance isn't in my skill repertoire” she retorted while snatching it back.
“t-t looks like I’ll have to help you make up for your lack of knowledge in that area,” he said while taking it back again. Honestly, he was trying. Maybe now Grayson will focus all his babying on her, although a small part of him wished he won’t.

MGA 5 EPISODE ONE: tooice’s tt ( 8:08 - 9:11 ) & billie eilish’s idontwannabeyouanymore ( 3:31 - 4:17 ) reimagined acoustic cover
SHOWCASED: singing, guitar, creativity, bilinguality concept versatility??
TW: minor anxiety
there’s a sinking feeling in his chest when he sees the email, with its sleek, coldly official design and matter-of-fact wording. clicking around, reading every email except for the one from mnet, hyojin chews his bottom lip as he tries to immerse himself in anything but the reminder that he had, even for a moment, decided to stray from the path he had decided to follow for the past few years.
‘CONGRATULATIONS, KIM HYOJIN.’
for some reason, he doesn’t feel like he’s being congratulated at all.
he skims through the acceptance email from motte capital, the familiar name of the manager not bringing him much comfort. at this point, he was already guaranteed a spot as an employee, having worked there since his freshman year in university. he’s sure it’s a position that would be envied by anyone else in his department -- getting a job at a large finance firm over one break, nevertheless every one? if he didn’t know better, he would have thought it preferential treatment, too.
( of course, that wasn’t true. the only connection he had was was back in anyang, wondering how her dear son was doing in the big city. )
with a sigh, he opens the email, wondering if there was some kind of mixup, or confusion, or just general cruelty. maybe they were congratulating him for trying out, only to reject him and tell him that he wasn’t good enough. maybe things were better off that way, anyways.
it’s not very normal of him to be this melancholy -- it’s just that his fight with doyoung and resurfacing memories of seungyeon have been weighing him down and keeping him awake lately. there isn’t much comfort he can find unless it’s in singing or when he’s in the studio with seunghun, or even just hanging around with sakura. it’s difficult, indeed.
he remains there foolishly, like a statue, at the slow sinking realization that it wasn’t a joke -- the email gives him an address and information that would make no sense otherwise unless he had somehow passed whatever preliminary screening they had put him through two weeks ago. hyojin’s first reaction, naturally, is to put his phone on the table, face down, and to ignore the message despite the objection his heart raises.
one day and many hours of mindlessly singing songs on the piano that he can vaguely remember the chords for, hyojin finds himself straying back to the lyrics for seattle by sam kim, the unfamiliar, twisting feeling in his gut that had been haunting him ever since he had seen the email growing stronger with every note. he stops and sits there for a while, looking at his fingers on the plastic white keys, the way the keyboard slowly moves with his arms on the thin beams that held it up. in retrospect, it was already used and cheap when he had gotten ahold of it, but at that time, he had carefully collected all of the wages he had gotten from the bakery in a little piggybank on his desk to buy some kind of replacement for the old, rundown piano that he had left back at home, only bringing his guitar along with his small suitcase.
he was more comfortable now than he used to be, of course, but the thought still lingers whenever he plays, the reminder that he had been so determined to get what he wanted just to sing, to make music in the way he could best striking a chord in him.
maybe this was a sign.
“no, this isn’t it.”
covering his mouth with his hand to try and muffle both a sigh of frustration and a yawn, his eyes remain glued on the bright screen of his laptop as he exits out of the fiftieth music video he’s seen that night. call it a bad habit, but when he stays up late for things like this, he tends to keep all the other lights off -- partially not to disturb jooyoung, but also to save electricity. there wasn’t much for him to lose, anyways -- he already wore glasses with an admittedly rather high prescription.
hearing the inklings of sleep creeping into his voice, now gruff from staying completely silent for at least an hour or so, he ruffles his hair to try and keep himself awake. he doesn’t have much time to waste before the internship starts in a week or two and with the auditions approaching faster than ever. he’ll fix whatever mess he makes of his sleep schedule later, when the performance is over. for now, he’ll have to find something that fits perfectly.
he wants to show another side of him while keeping the same theme. a chaos song? 12:30? a classic, but not currently trendy. what about a momoland song? or...
pausing in his trail of thought, hyojin’s mind zeroes in on an idea. a girl group song? that’s a good mix of trendy and catchy. finally picking up his guitar after spending so long with his fingers itching to play something, anything, but his head not allowing himself to get sidetracked while doing something so important.
closing his eyes and strumming a few chords while muffling the strings, hyojin quietly starts to sing a song from the top of his head. “what to do, keep me still / make me like ooh ahh ooh ahh -- oh? that’s not bad, what about this,” changing the fingering patterns, he starts a new song, “who that who that who that boy,” then changing again, “i can’t stop this trembling / on and on and on / i wanna throw my all / into your world.” he stops playing once his voice gets a little too loud and he can hear it echo, wincing.
a girl group medley wouldn’t be too bad, but considering his time frame, the amount of time it would take him to decide on songs and arrange them together and practice seemed unrealistic. maybe he’ll just stick with one or two.
it’s relatively smooth sailing after that -- he ends up choosing tooice’s tt, and after another session of scrolling through random songs on youtube to try and jar his memory as to what would be good to sing, he decides to settle on a billie eilish song as well. no matter how much he tries, he can’t ignore his ballad and emotional vocal side.
by the night before the performance, hyojin finds that the late thoughts have ebbed away, and falls into a dreamless sleep.
❀ IN THE STUDIO ;
if he was asked to list out the top three things he was most grateful for at that very moment, hyojin would definitely list his cousin as one of them. he’s trying not to take note of how clammy his hands feel and the amount of nerves he has for something as big as this, but he manages to maintain his composure, more so to keep up appearances around jooyoung and not worry him.
perhaps he’s too preoccupied with trying to absorb the largeness of the studio and everything around him, but before he knew it, his hand was being grabbed by jooyoung and he was being pulled along to a section of the seats. it takes him a second too late to realize that they weren’t going to be sitting along this time around -- although it isn’t unwelcome to see seungmin in any sort of setting, the realization that both jooyoung and seungmin were going to be sitting together for god knows how long. he’s tempted to take the lead and sit in between them to avoid becoming the collateral damage of their interaction, but it’s clear that the older male has something else in mind when he literally sits next to the boy.
“ah, seungminnie.” he waves a hand weakly in greeting, only offering an embarrassed smile when he’s responded to with surprise.
admittedly, he hadn’t told anyone except for maybe jooyoung and sakura, but he also had run into seunghun and sungwoon during auditions. that makes for less than five people, but in retrospect, he didn’t seem like the type to do something like this.
he can feel the tension boiling between the two siblings, sitting awkwardly in his seat and watching the spectacle almost nervously, as if waiting any moment to break them apart in case a fight went down. so this would be what the kim family reunion would be like, huh. although, he supposes the only person missing would be junyoung.
regardless, he simply smiles back at jooyoung when the male turns helplessly to give him a dry smile and shrug, as if saying what can i do, that’s how youngsters are. laughing to try and break the bad mood, he shifts in his seat again and rubs the back of his neck sheepishly.
“let’s just do well, everyone.”
once the broadcasting begins and the ceos are introduced, hyojin finds himself covering his mouth in shock, and he turns to look at jooyoung in surprise. admittedly, he hadn’t really watched much of the mgas unless it was clips concerning sungwoon, so he had thought the judging panel would just be a bunch of professional performers that could judge idols.
instead, seeing all five figures in front of him on the stage sends shocks through his body, somehow making the stakes seem far higher now that such qualified eyes were upon them. it wasn’t exactly that he listened to a lot of idol music or paid close attention to the entertainment companies, but it’s still the feeling of seeing celebrities in the flesh that makes him so starstruck.
even then, adding onto that, the contestants seemed to be called in a random order after the initial announcements were made by the judges. nevertheless, he tries his best to enjoy the stages, watching carefully and attentively as each of them performed and cheering for his friends. he can’t help but comment on haruto as he gets on the stage as well, surprised at seeing the familiar face.
“ah, so cute,” hyojin says, smiling fondly and his hands curling up in an almost cringe at how endearing he found the boy during his introduction, and he calls out a soft “がんばってね ( ganbatte ne / do your best )” to the boy in japanese before he starts his skating performance. it’s incredibly impressive and certainly something he’s never seen before until now, and the finesse with which the younger boy performed was definitely eye-catching. of course, he stands up in his seat when haruto ends up falling off the stage after waving, clear concern on his face for the poor boy that still doesn’t go away entirely, even when he proves to be okay.
that aside, he remains seated for the rest of the performances, cheering for seungmin as he sings an english song, mesmerized by his voice, and then jooyoung, who plays some of the guitar. despite having heard jooyoung practicing in his room from time to time, hyojin still chuckles at the similarity in their instrument choices, swaying along to the songs he plays.
“guess it’s a kim cousin thing.” he says to seungmin, gesturing at the acoustic guitar he had with him as well, before looking up at jooyoung with his electric guitar meaningfully.
by the time it was his turn to go up, it felt more like he had been watching a concert and was now being asked to perform.
❀ ON THE STAGE ;
growing shy when he hears baek jiyoung call his name, hyojin grabs his guitar and heads onto the stage, ducking his head down with red ears. admittedly, he’s a little flustered to have all of their attention on him, but he tries his best to stay relaxed nevertheless. the moment he slings the guitar over his shoulder, however, he feels his legs starting to quiver slightly, only growing more intense when baek jiyoung asks him to introduce himself.
“ah, hello, i’m 21 year old kim hyojin,” he says, holding up two fingers on one hand and one finger on the other with a soft smile.
he tries not to think of other things while speaking, but he can’t help but think back to how doyoung would occasionally call him a ‘pretty boy,’ and even how his old middle school friends would comment on his eye smile and how sweet he looked whenever smiling. stuttering before he continues his sentence, hyojin adds, “i’ve been singing since i was around... seven? yeah -- i won’t take up too much longer, but i hope you’ll enjoy and that the worries you might have had today will be erased. also...”
inhaling softly once he realizes how his legs are wobbling a bit now, hyojin grows sheepish, asking, “would it be okay if i got a chair? i think i’ll sit while playing.”
thanking the staff member that brings up a chair for him to sit on and adjusting the microphone to his height while strumming the guitar to make sure it’s tuned, he looks up again at the audience, then the judges, trying not to grow red before flashing a thumbs up. taking a deep breath, he starts to strum the beginning to tooice’s tt.
이러지도 못하는데      i’m in two minds 저러지도 못하네      in an awkward situation 그저 바라보며 ba-ba-ba-baby      i just stare and say ba-ba-ba-baby 매일 상상만 해 이름과 함께      everyday i only imagine without asking 쓱 말을 놨네 baby      i talk casually and say your name baby 아직 우린 모르는 사인데     but we don’t even know each other
singing the song sweetly despite it being at the same fast pace, hyojin purposefully slows down at some parts to emphasize, varying the notes in a more syncopated, sensual way than the typically cutesy way of the original. at the same time, he notably pouts at the last line, his eyes shining as his fingers brush over the strings in a well practiced manner.
nanana nananana 콧노래가 나오다가 나도 몰래      i start humming and before i know it 눈물 날 것 같애     i feel like crying, i don’t feel like myself 아닌 것 같애 내가 아닌 것 같애      this isn’t like me at all i love you so much
trying not to grow shy when he hears jooyoung’s voice cheering for him the crowd, he closes his eyes briefly, starting to feel himself get lost in the rhythm of the song, growing out of his nervous shell that he had shown in the introduction. as soon as he hits the chord for the last line, he opens his eyes to wink at the judge panel on ‘i love you so much.’
이미 난 다 컸다고 생각하는데      think i’m all grown up now 어쩌면 내 맘인데 왜      i’m free to make my own choices, but why 내 맘대로 할 수 없는 건데      why can’t i have it my way 밀어내려고 하면 할수록      the more i try to push you away 자꾸 끌려 왜 자꾸 자꾸 끌려 baby      the more i’m drawn and attracted to you baby
slowly picking up the beat as he reaches an especially well known part of the popular girl song, he bursts into a bright smile once he starts to see some heads bobbing in the audience, clearly enjoying the rendition of such a popular song, some even starting to do the gestures of the dance vaguely.
i’m like tt, just like tt 이런 내 맘 모르고 너무해 너무해     you don’t know how i feel, so mean, so mean i’m like tt, just like tt tell me that you’d be my baby
hitting the chorus, he starts to have fun with the lyrics, his voice following along smoothly as he slightly angles his head to glance at the contestants in the audience with a slighty half smile, almost like a smirk, shaking his head cutely while singing ‘so mean, so mean.’ once he reaches the end of the segment, he slows down his strumming, ending it on a nice chord.
before a silence ensues, he adjusts his sitting position ever so slightly before starting, strumming the guitar, before entering right into the middle of the chorus of idonwannabeyouanymore.
if "i love you" was a promise would you break it, if you're honest tell the mirror what you know she's heard before
hitting each beat hard, he starts to sing more powerfully, voice thick with emotion and eyes squeezing shut as he feels the melody, shifting into a far different mood from the playful nature of tt. in a few seconds, the atmosphere suddenly turns melancholy and moody.
i don't wanna be you i don't wanna be you
slowing down as he draws out the lines slowly, he starts playing the guitar more quietly in the background, barely pausing to repeat the line again, this time going into a higher note, hearing it sound smoothly in the studio.
i don't wanna be you, anymore
finally, one last time, he echoes the last line, playing nothing but one last chord and eyes reopening gradually. removing his fingers from the neck of the guitar, he speaks a “thank you” into the microphone before standing up and bowing multiple times to the people around him.
flipping the guitar so that it hung over his shoulder against his back, he makes his way off the stage with a little more confidence than when he entered it. as much as it was nervewracking, he would be lying if he said it wasn’t enjoyable.
maybe singing was what he was meant to do, after all.

We Asked 15 Beer Pros: How Will the Year in Beer Be Remembered? (2019)
Tumblr media
In the beer world, the last 12 months held celebration, controversy, and success. Some stories made us smile, and others made us shake our heads. This year was one of brewery openings, closings, mergers, and acquisitions. Thousands of new beers were brewed; some contained no alcohol; some contained more pastries than a small bakery; some weren’t beer at all, but hard seltzer.
We recently asked a group of brewers to play prognosticator about the new year, and they offered predictions on pale ales, hard seltzers, smoked beers, and more. But before the book on 2019 closes, why not take a look back at the industry’s happenings over the last year?
Below, an opinionated bunch of brewers and beer industry pros from across the U.S. (and one guest brewer in England) sum up the year in beer.
“We hit peak lactose. Pastry stouts, gloopy haze bombs, breakfast juice sours — all seem to be in an arms race to be the sweetest and least beer-flavored drink possible. I hope 2020 is the turning point in that trend.” — Nick Weber, Head Brewer, Fortnight Brewing, Cary, NC
“The 12-ounce bottle officially died this year. The 16-ounce can is like the virtue signal for hype beer, and every major brewery, big and small, has started switching over to cans to signal to consumers that they’re cool kids, too. Now you can’t even give away a used bottling line.” — Ethan Buckman, Co-owner and Head Brewer, Stickman Brews, Royersford, PA
“Adjunct beers continued to get weirder and just downright absurd. I’m talkin’ Fruit Gushers, macaroni and cheese, even Lucky Charms. Whether it was out of creativity or a need to stand out, I believe the industry is starting to remind itself of the value of some of the more traditional beer styles. With that, I think we’ll start to see a resurgence of those beer styles in the coming years, or at least I hope we do.” — Kyle Gonzales, NYC Field Marketing, Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, NY
“Brewers finally embraced the traditional ingredients of kölsch: lactose, three fruit varieties, Tahitian vanilla beans, and Sabro hops. OK Boomer.” — Trevor Williams, Co-owner and Brewmaster, Hoof Hearted Brewing, Marengo, OH
“As the craft-beer scene is evolving, we’re seeing breweries near us devoting time, energy, and finances toward personal interests, and in doing so putting out less New England-style IPAs and more lagers and wild-fermented beers. Brewers were more willing to grow their sour programs by adding foeders, or invest in lagering tanks rather than chase what might sell the fastest and easiest.” — Morgan Clark Snyder, Owner and Head Brewer, Buttonwoods Brewery, Cranston, RI
“I think 2019 was a year of collaboration — both between breweries and with the combination of experimentation and refinement in the beer industry. We saw a return and resurgence of traditional styles, while continuing the expansion of new creative combinations and techniques.” — Rachel Nalley, Head Brewer, TT’s Brewery & BBQ, Spokane Valley, WA
“There was a start of breweries seeking ways to reach new and more diverse audiences, focusing efforts on bringing more folks into the fold and having greater ethnic diversity represented at beer events and within breweries themselves. I hope it continues in 2020. Following the success and reach of events like Fresh Fest Beer Fest and the work of groups like Beer Kulture, I’d like to see craft beer become a crowded table full of faces that represent a wide variety of races, genders, and backgrounds.” — Jeremy Danner, On-Premise Specialist and Brand Ambassador, 4 Hands Brewing Company, St. Louis, MO
“Every year has its throwaway trend, but this year it is apparently extra special. 2019 will be remembered as the year of hard seltzer. You should give it a try. Really. However, if you’re the highly suggestible type, you already have. Because you saw some buff dude or cute girl doing it on Instagram. You go tiger. Avoid posting any pics yourself. … You won’t be proud of them in a couple years. Or in one year. Admittedly, it’s likely the perfect drink for people whose best night of their lives was prom.” — Greg Koch, Co-founder, Stone Brewing; “The Arrogant Bastard” & “Chief Executive Omnipotent,” Arrogant Consortia, Escondido, CA
“The mortality of what we’ve known as ‘craft beer,’ and the beginning of something entirely new. Watching brewers jump into the hard seltzer game and beyond is a sign that the contingent known as craft beer has now become just another alcoholic commodity representing popular culture.” — Brian Strumke, Founder and Brewer, Stillwater Artisanal (Contract Brand)
“Brewers started truly noticing and trying to focus on health and its different aspects. Whether it be the trend of hard seltzers and low-calorie and nonalcoholic offerings, talking about making mental health and self-care a priority for their staff and the beer community as a whole, and making a bigger push toward social responsibility and inclusion, and to stand up against hate and bullies.” — Libby Crider, Co-owner, 2nd Shift Brewing, St. Louis, MO
“As a means of differentiation in an increasingly crowded market, more brewers broadened and blurred the lines in how they’re defining their operations, and what it means to be a brewery.” — David Gonzales, Director of Brewing Operations, Lost Worlds Brewing Company, Cornelius, NC
“Craft’s growth slowdown, the introduction of other beer-adjacent products (you didn’t think I wouldn’t mention seltzer, did ya?), and shifting consumer preferences have cemented that this year was the end of [an] era, and that the next star breweries’ values will be derived by how they deliver beer, and their experience, to their drinkers. We’ll see a lot of surprising M&A (both companies involved and valuations) in the next five years, and we’ll realize the paradigm shift that happened this year directly caused those surprises.” — John Dantzler, Co-founder, Torch & Crown Brewing Company, New York, NY
“I’ve never seen, or perhaps it just wasn’t publicized as much, as many restructures, downsizes, or layoffs as I’ve seen this year. Beer companies have to look at being lean in the right way to manage risk, and it appears restructuring the company is the preferred method.” — Tim Matthews, VP of Global Brewing, CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective, Longmont, CO
“Craft malt finally arrived in the national beer conversation, shedding some of the (unfounded, mostly) reputation for inconsistency. In Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, we have an abundance of craft maltsters to work with, all of whom make terrific malt and are built to scale up. In the last couple weeks alone, two different farmers/aspiring maltsters came in looking to make connections. More brewers opting in helped the maltsters compete on price; industry and academic gatherings of said experts filled up across the country; and consumers started finally paying more attention to the freshness, locality, and pleasing sense of variety that craft malt can deliver (which is the point, remember?). It’s about time. If a brewery is willing to plunk down $26 a pound for imported aroma hops but not part with a red cent more for locally grown, locally malted heirloom barley — the backbone of beer — to quote Gene Ween, ‘somethin’ ain’t right.’” — Christian DeBenedetti, Founder and Head Brewer, Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery, Newberg, OR
“From scandals to lawsuits and crazy buyouts — all of it blasted across rapidly growing beer gossip accounts — this was the year of drama. Maybe beer has always been insane, but social media is here to make sure every single person knows everything everyone has done wrong. A short recap of 2019: the stupid ‘corntroversy’ between MillerCoors and [ABI]; an absurd amount of sexist, racist, and homophobic labels, posts, and emails (what year is it again?); the settlement of the Tracy Evans and Founders lawsuit; the Brewbound podcast with Chris Furnari taking aim at female beer influencers; BrewDog’s stolen marketing ideas scandal; Reckless Brewing and its really cringy black lager post; that weird IPA bowl. Dogfish Head merging with Sam Adams; the acquisition of New Belgium; Ballast Point is craft again — just kidding! — is sold again to some random investors; blah blah blah, something about Golden Road. Can everyone just calm down in 2020?” — Megan Stone, Guest Brewer, Laine Brew Co, Brighton, England
