a fun thing in the naruto universe is how names work
because like, in japan, the polite thing to do is call people by their LAST names, with given names being like. a friends/family thing?
except, in the naruto universe, they had the clan wars, which went on for GENERATIONS before the hidden villages were formed. And clan tensions were so tight that if you introduced yourself by your last name, someone might just try to kill you because your clan is allied with a clan thats allied with another clan who is an enemy of the person you're talking to.
obviously, this was a hassle.
so, there was like, an unspoken rule of only giving your first name, as seen with Hashirama and Madara. Because if you didn't know for a fact that someone was a senju or an uchiha, you could just treat them as another ninja and mutually decide not to kill each other. Things like the sharingan or any notable techniques would be a dead giveaway, but as long as you're not fighting, everyone can just. Politely not ask questions.
but also, because clans are important, they still want to have something which ties the clan together, if last names are omitted from conversation with outsiders.
This is less important in the modern era, but it's still present - everyone in naruto's academy class, even students who aren't friends, exclusively use their classmates first names. Even the teacher isn't immune, he's called Iruka-sensei, not Umino-sensei.
Which is why most clans have first names with common, repeated elements, especially where the main line comes in.
Ino/Shika/Chou is the obvious one, but you also have things like the Hyuuga having a history of the first-born having their name start with Hi (Hizashi, Hiashi, Hinata, Himawari, etc.) or the senju having -rama (Hashirama, Tobirama, Kawarama), the Inuzuka being named after animal body parts (Tsume - claw, Kiba - fang, Hana - nose), all sorts of stuff like that.
It works both in universe (clan loyalties and traditions) and out of universe (group similar characters together)!! its really neat!!!
kishimoto did a lot of dumb things with the Lore and consistently forgot details he'd written about earlier on, but when he DOES have a consistent worldbuilding thing it's super cool to think about.

Found your post about Hatake clan relations to agriculture, and you are right about almost everything, except: wolves in Japan are associated with crops!
Here's from Japanese wolf wiki:
"In the Shinto belief, the ōkami ("wolf") is regarded as a messenger of the kami spirits and also offers protection against crop raiders such as the wild boar and deer. Wild animals were associated with the mountain spirit Yama-no-kami. The mountains of Japan, seen as a dangerous, deadly place, were highly associated with the wolf, which was believed to be their protector and guardian."
Hatake clan being a wolf clan is very plausible, it's just would mean a different thing than most people seem to believe.
Wolves are associated with crops and mountains.
There's also yokai okuri ōkami, that protects travellers through mountains unless they accidentally trip; if you trip it will kill you. Apparently it has another name - okuri inu.
"The okuri inu has a special relationship with another yokai, the yosuzume. This eerie bird’s nocturnal song is often a warning that an okuri inu is following you. If one hears the yosuzume’s “chi, chi, chi” song, it is a sign to take extra care to watch one’s footing so that the okuri inu doesn’t have dinner that night." (from yokai dot com/okuriinu/ )
I will admit that I am too lazy to look that information up. But I don't mind that wolves are tied to agriculture and could therefore be tied to the Hatake - my beef with the "Hatake have wolf summons and wolf characteristics" fanon comes from the fact that it's a cheap copy of the already existing Inuzuka clan. The Inuzuka are right there, we don't need Inuzuka 2.0 but make it more feral because wolves are cooler.
It doesn't even make sense, Kakashi's summons are dogs - and not even big mean wolfdogs like Tsume's but cute little pet doggos - and that "heacanon" only serves to make Kakashi and Tobirama (because he gets headcanoned as Hatake 90% of the time solely because of his hair color (which is funny because everyone describes it as white in their fics even tho it's fucking grey like Kakashi's or Kabuto's!!! (and speaking of Kabuto, isn't it funny that he never gets headcanoned for a Hatake even tho he looks more similar to Kakashi than Tobirama does? I wonder why that is. (I don't. I know exactly why that is.)))) extremely OOC.
Neither of them is some kind of growling, feral fighter who claws and bites their way through a battle. Neither is in any way or form extremely overprotective over what they consider theirs because of "pack reasons" (and neither is Sakumo for that matter, Mr "I'll kill myself even tho I am the last family my 5yo son has left"). And neither needs some kind of fangs to bite someone, if this is what people want to write, as Madara has already proven that a strong shinobi can bite a piece of flesh out with perfectly normal teeth.
All three characters are extremely powerful and badass in their own right without adding powers to them that are completely out of character. A headcanon builds up to something canon has already established and the "Hatake are like Inuzuka but with wolves" fanon is so far off that it would be laughable if it wasn't so annoying.
And I don't think tying the Hatake to agriculture is the only right way either. It's merely a suggestion, one that I find makes sense given the little bit we have, and if people want to build up on that and add how they tend to have wolf summons for protection (Kakashi's are still cute doggos tho), then that's fine and hey, at least it makes sense. My beef is just 100% that I think it's extremely cheap to make the Hatake a copy of the Inuzuka because they find wolves cooler than dogs and that's on that.

Your recent post made me remember that in Artazon, you can find the TM Quick Claw near the red-blue flowers (which have the color scheme of the Dragon type symbol from gens 3 and 4). In Japanese, Quick Claw's name is Sensei no tsume, and "sensei" can both mean "head-start" or "teacher". :3 (Apologies if this was mentioned in an earlier post already!)

The scorpion crew sounds so cool! As does the Storm pirates! Please talk about your OCs as much as you want, it’s so incredible that you’ve come up with so many amazing characters
I know I'm late to answering this ask, and the reason for that is because I was saving it for when I wanted to talk about an OC.
First of all, thank you so much, I'm super flattered that you think they are interesting! ^/////^
So right now I am going to talk about more Storm Pirates.
The Storm Pirates started out as a group of four: Ravi (the captain), Mel, Shen, and Alula (who I've talked about here once). They meet in a town's jail, where they're each detained for a different reason, and start talking to each other.
I'm going to focus on Shen for now.
Shen Haklavim, aka the "Skull Mask Swordsman"
Shen is a swordsman who uses two-sword style. She wears a wolf skull in order to hide her face so that opponents don't make a snap judgement on her based on gender.
She's butch, has a mohawk, and thinks she's short (she's 6 ft) because the rest of her family is all taller than her.
Shen carries six swords (three on each hip), using two at a time, and they are all paired blades meant to be wielded together.
Her swords are:
-Fell and Larka, the Day and Night blades (one's black, one's white) - these are her primary swords. -Benizakura and Musashi, the Land and Sea blades (one's red, one's blue) - old swords that are duller, but she's too attached to get rid of) -Amaroq and Miyax, the Parent and Child blades (one's gold, one's silver) - only busts these out for serious battles against other swordsmen.)
Shen loves weaponry, armor, and especially swords (she and Tashigi could talk for HOURS) as she comes from a blacksmithing family. Is a gigantic tomboy, very masculine, and dresses and acts as such. A bit "pure of heart, dumb of ass" sometimes, as she tends to act on feeling and instinct rather than thinking things through. Extremely loyal, but will put her own needs and wants above those of most people, and only really listens to the captain. Very physical in interacting with others and showing affection.
Shen's dream is to forge the world's strongest swords. Her father is a blacksmith, and she is the youngest of 7 children, with 6 older brothers. Her brothers learned to use weapons, but as the only girl, her father tried to keep her away from such things. But she wanted to be like her cool older brothers, so she went to them behind his back to learn to fight. Having once heard her father say that a great blacksmith must first understand the weapons they craft, and thus know how to use them, she seeks to become a great swordsman in order to truly understand her craft.
All of her brothers are both blacksmiths and warriors that specialize in a different weapon. The brothers in birth order, and the names of their signature weapons: Regel, first son - uses the spear, "Akela" Ein, second son - uses the katana, "Akame" Ozen, third son - uses the kama, "Kurojaki" Tofer, fourth son - uses the claws, "Tsume" Parva, fifth son - uses the axe, "Gabu" Zanav, sixth son - uses the flail, "Balto" (Her father uses the greatsword, "Fenris," and her mother uses the saw, "Moro".)
At the advice of Tofer (her favorite brother, and also the strongest of the brothers) she set out to find a master to instruct her in the ways of the sword. After traveling, Shen met and found her teacher, a swordsman known as "Urva the Mongoose". Urva's training was brutal, and particularly focused on speed, Urva's specialty.
Backstory happened (I can go into it if you're really interested o.o ) and Shen set out to follow her dream, traveling in order to fight strong opponents and become a better swordsman in order to become a better blacksmith.
Shen gets a reputation as a fearsome warrior who will challenge anyone carrying a sword, and gets her epithet before meeting the future Storm Pirates.
Shen gets detained for allegedly stabbing someone. She claims that the person "ran into her sword," but no one believes her--except Ravi, her future captain.
To close, Shen is a love letter to all the canine media I grew up with. Books, shows, movies, everything that shaped me is reflected in her character. All of her moves are named after canine media I loved growing up.
Her signature move is "Silver Fang", a spinning attack with both swords. She does a modified version of it called "White Fang."
Bonus: After meeting and fighting Zoro, they become friends/rivals. Zoro steals her move, Silver Fang, doing a three-sword style version of it he calls "Cerberus." (She, in turn, steals his move, Oni Giri, doing a two-sword style version of it that she calls "Hellhounder".)

Notes:
This song is about a girl turning to the dark side. She sells her life to a demon to turn her pain into power. The music is really powerful without being too chaotic (like some of Drop's tracks) and is easily my favorite song on the album!

I do not understand this line at all. I feel like its probably a proverb or a play of words but I couldn't find anything that sounded similar. 楔 means wedge, so I translated 千の楔を身に "A thousand wedges on the body" as "a thousand cuts," but I doubt that's what she meant.

New Bleach OC
Welcome the new addition to the blog and one of the few Bleach OCs I have.
Haruka Fujimoto (FC: Mitsuri Kanroji from Kimetsu-no-Yaiba/Demon Slayer)

Age: 19
Height: 5′6″
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: Haruka has a curvaceous figure, long hair, green eyes, and a playful demeanor. Her hair is bright pink with green ends and reaches down to her waist. She wears a Shinigami shihakusho with an open chest but closed at her neck and collar bone area. Instead of the traditional pants of the Gotei 13 uniform she wears a miniskirt instead with black leggings and combat heels.
Personality: Haruka is a cheerful and energetic individual, who is always ready with a joke or a smile. Despite her playful demeanor, she is also fiercely determined and unyielding in combat. She has a strong sense of justice and will fight to protect those in need, no matter what the cost.

Zanpakuto Name: Tsuta-no-tsume (Ivy claws)
Release command: "Stretch and snare, Tsuta-no-tsume!"
Zanpakuto Released Appearance: A double-bladed weapon, with two separate blades connected by a chain. The blades would be long and slender, with sharp edges and intricate patterns and symbols etched into them. The handle of the sword would have a long, curved grip for a secure hold, with a large, ornate guard that protects the user's hand.
Ability: When released, Tsuta-no-Tsume will elongate into its appearance and have a long reach with it’s whip like abilities. In addition to its reach and cutting ability, Tsuta-no-Tsume can also excrete a variety of poisons and powders while swinging and can cling to most targets if it was swung correctly. Each poison can provide a different effect depending on what all the wielder needs, but most with a strong spiritual pressure can shrug off most effects but each subsequent hit will increase the dosage until it reaches a lethal limit for the damaging or direct poisons. Others can mess with one’s mind where spiritual pressure can mitigate it to some degree but it is normally difficult. Though nowhere near the potency or strength of Captain Kurotsuchi’s poisons, they are still terrifying and mostly meant to hinder the opponent rather than subdue them completely. She can change what poison it excretes even when it is in its sealed state so she can experiment and tinker with them as needed.

one thing that i quite like about japanese is the fact that. kanji are weird.
like, if you have any knowledge of the language you probably know about kunyomi and onyomi readings, and how where the kanji is placed in a word can completely change its pronunciation. ie, you can have 人 which is "hito" by itself, 人間 "ningen" in this word, 人権 "jinken" in this word, and 人目 "hitome" in this word.
which is just the tip of the iceberg, because even those rules can be cheerfully thrown out if you use a kanji in a name. you can have someone be named 人仁 and have that be pronounced megumi, because fuck you. sure, it's probably not the most common usage of that, but you can fucking do it if you want.
You know how when an anime set at school introduces a new character, and they write their name on the board? Thats because there are so many fucking ways to read kanji in names that it's highly likely that you won't be able to guess how it's pronounced unless they tell you.
I mention this because. For the longest fucking time. I was like. Okay. All of the named inuzuka clan members are body parts, Kiba/Tsume/Hana are, respectively, Fang/Claw/Nose, just written in katakana. I kind of cheated a bit with Hasami's name because while it can technically mean "claws" its more like. "pincers", like a scorpion. But it sounded pretty and it had other possible meanings that i liked, so I kept it.
However, Tsume is, importantly, Hasami's aunt, not her mom. I'd been sitting on her mom's name for fucking ages because none of the other names I knew for body parts sounded right.
And then I remembered, oh yeah, if it's in a name, kanji is fucking bullshit. I can just do whatever the fuck I want, actually. Especially considering this direct quote from the third databook:
Q: "How do you choose a name for a character" Kishimoto: "I choose japanese nouns that sound good as a name"
its free fucking real estate, baby.
so im tentatively naming her メザキ/Mezaki because that's one of the many many possible readings of 目 (eye)

冬瓜[Tōgan] Benincasa pruriens f. hispida
It is native to India and is said to have been introduced via China around the Asuka period(593-710). The flower is large, more than ten centimeters in diameter, and the long, spherical fruit is also large, some of the larger ones are eighty centimeters long and weigh more than ten kilograms.
冬[Fuyu|Tō] means winter, 瓜[Uri|Ka] means melon or gourd. 瓜 is not read as gan when it is written in a single kanji. Such a reading is a corrupution or a kind of 当て字[Ateji], called 熟字訓[Jukuji-kun]. The same goes for 昨日[Kinō](Yesterday), 今日[Kyō](Today), 明日(Asu or ashita), etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji#Special_readings
瓜 is mostly read in the normal way, such as 苦瓜[Nigauri](Bitter melon), 烏瓜[Karasuuri](Japanese snake gourd; lit. Crow melon), etc., but some have special readings, 南瓜[Kabocha](Pumpkin; lit. melon of the south), 木瓜[Boke](Japanese quince; lit. melon that grows on a tree), etc.
瓢[Hisago](Gourd or calabash) is also in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, and the kanji has 瓜 inside. The origin of the kanji 狐[Kitsune](Fox) is the image of an animal shaped like a gourd(瓜). 犭(獣偏)[Kemono-hen] means the animal radical at left. Incidentally, 爪[Tsume](nail or claw) is not 瓜.

Okay, so, here’s something dumb.
The Kanji for Kahyoreigetsu is 歌氷麗月, which is different from Kachofugetsu (Flower-Bird-Wind-Moon). In this, the Kanji alluding to wind is replaced with the kanji alluding birds, but the Kanjis are all different, so the Kahyoreigetsu isn’t Flower-Wind-Bird-Moon, but Song-Ice-Elegance/Beauty-Moon. This of course represents the order of the dimensions Yuya travelled, whereas the original order would represent the order Yuya meets the respective Yuboy (Himself-Yuto-Yugo-Yuri).
But the rabbit hole is quite deep here. The Kanji 麗, though used in Lyrilusc - Phantom Feathers, has no direct connection to birds. EXCEPT Elegant Egoist, and Harpie Lady Elegance both use this. Interestingly the Kanji used for Ghost Meets Girl, and related Shiranui/Mayakashi cards (and a couple of Warrior/Zombie cards), but also in Waterfall of Dragon Souls, which is a card that support Wyrms. This is somewhat significant, since technically speaking, due to its Kanji name, Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon is the first card in the game with Genryu(Wyrm) in its name, and it is an Xyz Monster.
Obviously the Rei Kanji is a repeat of the Rei (Zero) sound in the Akaba kids, though in this case it likely refers to 霊, rei, which means Spirit, or Sacred. It is also an allusion to 鈴, rei, as in a small bell, which can also be spelled as Rin. (Lol.) The zero reference here is more of a reference to how Lyriluscs work, they have the damage bouncing effect of Yubel, but the way they actually work involves them reducing opponent’s attack to their level (ie. 0 ATK), which is the inversion of how Raidraptors work.
But the Kanji name of Phantom Feathers is 比翼の麗鳥, Hiyoku no Reicho, refers to 零鳥, Reicho Kanji used in Rio’s cards, Ice Beast Zerofyne, and Ice Beast Zereort, where Reicho means Zero Bird/Zero Feathers/Zero Wings. Hiyoki no Reicho is allusion to the expression of Hiyoku no Tori, which literally means birds/wings/feathers side-by-side, but refers to a happily married couple, though it is used like “Birds of a Feather” here, as the YGOrganization translation suggest. Though, since both Rei, and Cho Kanji refer to Ruri, it is actually a repeat of sorts. Icy Breeze Refrain does a similar thing, since the Kanji in its name 氷風, Hyofu, refers to both Hyo, and Fu.
There isn’t much significant stuff about the other Kanji, though. The Kanji Ka is used in some other Fairy-related cards besides Melodious (I already discussed it in the Melodious post), the Kanji for Hyo is the standard Kanji for Ice related cards (though interestingly it is used for both Icejades, and Ice Barriers, which are Synchro-based archetypes, as well as Olga’s Glacial Beasts), and the Tsu is the standard the Kanji for moon, though the getsu spelling isn’t commonly used in YGO (the specific Kanji alludes to Moonlit Papillon, Droite’s card, for those wondering. Moonlit Papillon, and Lunalights use the same 月光 , gekko, moonlight Kanji).
For these specific Kanji, there might be a deeper meaning. Each Kanji alludes to a reflection of sorts, songs are a reflection of one’s self, ice reflects your image, spirits are a reflection of a passed person, moon reflects sun’s (Ray?) rays. Of course, each Kanji is also a reflection of each other, birds sing, spirits are depicted as winds, ice reflects moon, flowers reach towards moonlight etc. So this likely alludes to the fact that Bracelet Girls are a reflection of Ray, a reflection of each other, but perhaps more importantly, a reflection of past YGO female characters.
For other possible associations, the word hyo can mean covering, or clear (as in Clear Wing Synchro Dragon) with different Kanji, and the “tsu” sound is used both in claws (tsume) (Lunalight Panther Dancer), and sabres (tsurugi) (Lunalight Sabre Dancer).
